  • A brief review of the year flying my Phoebus A1. Turned out to be an amazing year, with dreams come true. Started off with training and familiarization flights at Williams Soaring Center in CA, then came home to MT and flew the Mission Mountains and Valley, with a one-day excursion to the Flying Y airport in the Paradise Valley in S/Central MT, then back to the Missions again. I have been truly blessed!

      Thanks Adrian. It was fun putting the video together, but even better producing the footage. 😉

    Those top and bottom brakes caused so many leakage problems they had to set them back so far towards the trailing edge, they became ineffective especially at high speed. It’s such a shame fully sealed top fitted brakes hadn’t been developed when the Phoebus was built because in the air, it was very nice to fly, although I only flew the 17m version with about 90hrs on type.

      Apparently, the effectiveness of the spoilers on the 15m version is very different than on the 17m version. Mine are VERY effective, and other A and B model owners have reported the same to me. On the 17m (C model)-not so much. Thus the need for the drogue chute.

    Nice! I'm into my second syndicate, on the basis that I can't fly the glider all the time and it's nice to divide the bills in two when they arrive.

      Very nice! That’s a good way to spread out the costs.

    Wir hatten einige Jahre einen Phoebus C, damit zu gleiten prima! Im Gebirge zu drehen war nicht immer das Gelbe vom Ei. Und dann der Bremsfallschirm!! Trotzdem danke :)

      Fortunately I don’t have to deal with the drogue parachute with this glider. The spoilers work very well on the 15m wing. But I’ve heard they “anemic” for the 17m wing. It’s amazing what an extra 2m of wingspan can do, isn’t it?

    A couple of questions:
    Great scenery, where are you?
    I noticed that you went from a Borgelt vario to an LX Nav. How do you like the LX Nav.
    (I bought a SGS 1-35 and am thinking of buying an LX Nav S 10)
    Cheer So!

      3:40 looks like Redfish Lake, ID. 4:17 is Finley Point on Flathead Lake, then some beautiful shots in Glacier NP.

      Most of the footage is from northwest Montana over the Mission Mountains, between Kalispell and Missoula (Ronan is the take-off airport--7S0). The original vario was a Cambridge 50S. It had been sitting for many years, and suspect the capacitors in it went bad. My dad "treated" them with gradually increasing voltage, which seemed to help, but I never got to fly it while working, and the following year (this year) it was "dead" again. I wanted an electronically compensated vario that would have a good audio component, and found a used S80 for a steal. It also had FLARM input, so I got that installed as well. Still need to finalize on location of the FLARM antennas though. Not quite happy with their current locations. Overall I LOVE the S80, even though this generation is not compatible with HAWK. The (non) HAWK wind still works way better than the wind function on XC Soar. This one also has the artificial horizon activated. Still learning how to use all its features. I really like the larger diameter of the S80 compared to the smaller S8. There is just so much information that is displayed on the screen that I don't know how you could see it well on the smaller unit.

      3:40 is Mission Reservoir just out of St. Ignatius in the Mission Valley. You are correct about Finley Point at 4:17. I have not yet flown over GNP--would need to keep 2K feet above the ground to do that legally. The rest of the pictures are mostly from the Mission Mountains, except for 7:37-8:14 which are of the Absaroka Mountains on the E side of the Paradise Valley, just N of Yellowstone NP.

      @@johnfoster1201 Thanks for the reply. You got a great deal on the S80! I bought and installed a FLARM Core on my 1-35. Wrt the FLARM antennas (FLARM and ADS-B) I mounted them on wooden masts, just below the panel cover, and above the canopy frame. (the 1-35 is metal, so they needed to be above the sides of the fuselage) I ran the FLARM range analyzer on the flights I had this past summer and fall, their position seems to work quite well.
      Cheers!

    Hi John, what software are you running on your SamSung phone during your latest video?

    • @johnfoster1201
      @johnfoster1201  ปีที่แล้ว

      XC Soar. My preference with regard to its setup are “evolving”. 🙂

    Hello, how is the phoebus sizewise? Would 186 cm and 110 kg "small" person fit?

    • @johnfoster1201
      @johnfoster1201  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m about 185cm. I had to move the rudder pedals all the way back, and rebuild the instrument panel to make sure the cut-outs for the legs were high enough that my legs didn’t hit it. But I fit without hitting my head on the canopy. With parachute, I’m about 90kg. My elbows are against the cockpit walls, which somewhat limits my arm movements, but I’m able to still move the joystick through its full range. It’s tight, but doable for me. You’d have to “try it on” for yourself to see how it would work for you. Also, my glider has some damage history, which has added weight to it, which has cut down its max pilot weight to 95kg. Watch out for that.
