Something's Not Right

  • What was an amazing weather day, was cut short by a binding/catching of the joystick when I turned left. Control check prior to takeoff was free and clear, but once the wings got loaded up, I started to feel a catch when rolling left. I could push through it, but after a while I felt uncomfortable continuing the flight in this condition without figuring out the problem and fixing it. It turned out to be an "R-clip" that was required by an AD that was binding/catching on the edge of the wing root rib cut-out for the aileron push rod. Once I bent it in a curved shape, and inserted it from the other side, the problem went away, and I've had multiple subsequent flights without this issue coming up again. This solution was also discussed with a friend who is an A&P/IA, and has experience with Phoebus gliders.

    That vario would drive me crazy! I have replaced my old cambridge beep vario (same thermo risistor technology, same nervous squeeking sound, but not as bad as yours! (check my older YT videos!)) with an LXNAV S80 a few years ago that I have given a pretty large dead band, Much better and relaxing than this thing LOL!
    But amazing views and good to see these old ships still fly so good. I have a Mini Nimbus from 1977, still flying clubclass competition with her, and doing amazingly well.
    This binding aileron, good call to go back, I had once a buzzing sound from sealing tape departing my Mini Nimbus, at the time I had no idea what it was, I was on the ground in no time, but was flying just locally so just one or 2 miles from the airfield.
    Keep on flying your Phoebus! Its a good sailplane with a huge money to fun ratio! ;-)

      Thanks for the encouragement. I have since replaced the Cambridge vario with a LX Nav S80 as well. I MUCH prefer it! I also added a PowerFlarm Core, which talks nicely to the S80. Nice to be able to see other traffic on the S80 as well. This can be seen in some of my newer YT videos.

      @@johnfoster1201 Ok, much better!!. a few weeks ago I replaced my old red box flarm with a LXNav PowerMouse, which includes an ADSB receiver as well. Much better range now. Of course also connected with the S80 and via Bt the S80 is connected with my Android smartphone running LK8000.. I fly competition with this setup!

    That is one interesting vario tone for sure. You're a better man than I am, I try and turn mine down pretty low on tow to reduce the distractions. Seems like I can hear a second vario as well. Are you running two?

      There is the museum piece “Piep-Vario” that makes the harsh squeal, and then an audio beeping from XC Soar running on the Android Phone.

      Haha. You’re right. Pretty amazing technology for the time though, right? But I’m glad to have something better in the cockpit now.

    Wow, a vario audio based on a Theromin. It would be like sitting through the soundtrack from a 1950s science fiction movie. 🤣

      I no longer use that audio Piep vario. I now have a LX Nav S80, which I MUCH prefer.

    why didn't you get clear of the ridge, NO THERMALING then you would have had more height in the flat, you would have had more time to diagnose control issue then return to base P.D.Q ??? also issue showed in a left had turn ... better to have done a RH circuit..... very odd choices !!!

    • @johnfoster1201
      @johnfoster1201  ปีที่แล้ว

      Your points are worth considering. Flying in ridge lift allows you to fly and remain aloft for longer without turning, assuming the ridge lift is sufficient and reliable. The drawback to this is that you are closer the ground on the ridge. I was torn between continuing to fly on such an amazing day, and the risk of continuing to fly. The situation appeared manageable, but eventually the concern over the risk won over and I returned to the airport. The airport traffic pattern is a left-handed pattern.

    I would cut more clearance in the wing root hole.

      I'm just a little nervous making a permanent structural modification to the glider, however sensible it may seem, seeing as I'm not a licensed aircraft mechanic, and that is not an approved modification, AND this is still a standard airworthiness certified glider.

      Fortunately, the fix was simple. But to sacrifice such an awesome soaring day due to a mechanical problem like this was a real bummer!
