The Boys: How to Make an Audience Stop Caring
The Boys has always been fun and this season I still thought it was pretty fun. But that’s not really the problem though. Where it failed is in its ability this season to make me care. Which sounds dumb but trust me this gets a little complicated. Because well to me that’s what really matters. I don’t want to turn the episode off, finish a season and immediately stop thinking about it. The Boys has never exactly been amazing at this, but’s it’s never been a glaring issue. This season, it’s definitely glaring. It’s a huge problem. From the things you hated to the things you loved, it’s still a huge problem in every aspect of this season. But caring is a broad term. Writing wise what do I mean by that and where did The Boys manage to completely go wrong.

How Succession Created a Monster

Kylo Ren's Decision - Star Wars Defined
Thats an interesting outlook on Eren’d character, not one I fully agree with but not one I’ve heard anywhere else. great job
I'm hoping "Wake Up, Dead Man" is actually gonna center on Blanc himself.
Light was not against Kira when he lost his memories. He even mentions that "kiras ideals are extremely close to mine." He clearly agrees with kira. He's only "helping" because thats what is expected of him. He's just keeping up appearances even without his memories. He's suspected of being kira so he really has no choice but to help. Light has been the same from the first episode to the very last. The only difference is the last episode is the first time he's ever been honest. Light has lied to everyone including himself all his life. He's always thought himself to be superior to everyone around him. Despite what Ryuk told Light that it was just random chance and not because he was chosen or special; Finding the book and the coincidences that helped him escape certain situations like with Naomi only fed more into his ego and god-complex thinking this is clearly fate. In the end he truly believes he is god and that they cant arrest him or shoot him. He fully believes in his lies because no one else does anymore. He is finally honest about his feelings even that his dad was a fool and everyone like him. These have always been his true thoughts. L once asked light if he had ever told the truth the answer was no until light finally was caught. Then he told the truth just once but believed in his own lies he'd been telling himself since the beginning.
Honestly I disagree with the sentiment that light never cared about making the world a better place. I think in the beginning he did (or at least thought he did). But as he continued using the Death Note, the power corrupted him and he strayed from his goals. Something to note is that in the anime and manga, the style of light’s eyes change to reflect this shift. In the beginning, he has these wide, bright eyes to show us how naive and idealistic he is. Even the first time he decides he’s gonna create a new world, his eyes are wide and bright. As he becomes more ruthless though and begins killing innocent people, his eyes start to be drawn more angular to symbolize his malicious nature. I can’t pin point exactly when this shift is, but I think it’s around the time he kills Naomi. Though that might be because it’s a major shifting point for the audience. Yes we’ve already seen Light kill the FBI agents, but with how we watch Light trick Naomi and make her commit suicide with a smug look rather than remorse is the first time for many that we despise Light’s actions. It’s the first point we realize what he’s become. You’ll also notice that when light loses his memories of the Death Note, his eyes revert to their wide and bright style. Once again, this shows us how Light is innocent, idealistic, if not a bit naive. This is also the time where we see what Light is without the Death Note, as you pointed out. He’s truly against Kira and has a strong sense of justice. Once he regains his memories, his eyes go back to being angular and cold. He’s regained his malicious intent. I think it’s clear that Light was initially a good person. That he had a strong sense of justice and wanted to do good. The period when he doesn’t have his memories as Kira shows us that. It’s the Death Note, the power he gets that corrupts him. I just don’t think it’s as immediate as him picking up the notebook. He’s pretty hesitant to try the notebook out and scared at the prospect of him killing people. Again, I do still think that even when he first decides to punish criminals that his intentions are good. But once he gets swept up in his “game” with L, he cares more about winning than Justice.
Need that AOT video brother
How can you ruin an unfinished character arc?
A lot of Light's big flaws had to be forced upon him to 1) make him not too sympathetic and 2) make him fail despite having such an OP power. If he was a bit more careful with whom he chose to execute, if he focused more on big picture stuff (e.g. politicians, big business, corrupt officials and warlords in *developing* countries) too many readers would like him and support him and the whole work would become about politics instead of a battle of wits between eccentric geniuses. So it feels unfair to hold these things against his character. He had to be written to make stupid as fuck mistakes at times to even have a chance at failing and he had to be clearly shown to be more concerned with ego and winning then with moral consideration to keep the focus on his battle with L. On the meta level, Light wasn't allowed to be anything other than what he was as a sacrifice to the stories overall direction. So not very much can be deduced from these aspects of his character. "The villain was doomed to lose because he was arrogant and evil!" Nah, he was doomed to lose because readers want it that way. In reality, arrogant and evil people win all the time. By the same line, Light's failures feel like concessions the author made for the greater good of his work. So, if you want to convincingly address Light as a character, you have to steel-man his perspective first. Otherwise you are arguing with Something that was artificially handicapped by necessity and expecting your victory to carry any weight with people who don't already agree with you.
Nah light without deathnote is the same, its just that he doesn't have the deathnote but shares the same personality. He is trying to catch kira cuz he finds that entertaining
Attack on Titan is the worst anime I have ever watched in my life because there are no moments that make me laugh. All the moments of Attack on Titan are sad, depressed, and very bloody. This damned anime is all about sadness, worry, and psychological state. It contains a huge amount of misery and depression. All these damned and dirty characters did was just cry and scream. All the other animes are better than Attack on Titan😡
Sounds like you should rewatch it in 10 years
What a wild and good one to start on. I think my first was DBZ. At the time I was engrossed with the saiyan and freiza arcs but looking back it's crazy the levels to it all. Attack on Titan is my new favorite since it wrapped up. I'd recommend Death Note as a really great one too.
One of the best death note video essays I have seen. Not only the quality but also the opinions.
W video
my left ear sends you regards
bro he never lost tho he always won that all that matters
I've just rewatched Death Note after like 16 years with good English and good anime quality (whoever remembers watching on TH-cam an episode parted to like 7 parts and half of them are lost or are in different languages😅) And I immediately thought that Light got cocky and overconfident as he used to be the best who does no mistakes. He did underate Near which was the beginning of his fall. But he also had to trust people to fulfil his directions and make everything more annoying for him when they make mistakes. It gives him trouble that could have been avoided. Because he trusted people, which was a risk by itself (He knew because he's damn smart).and he got fucked...but he didn't have another choice. It led to Mikami who fucked up real time by wanting to be useful and over did it. But the cause of all the shit that started to happen with him is the appearance of Misa. I hated her all the time which is funny because I used to like her years ago. She made most of the trouble and it led to a lot more other shit. Still, Light is hot and this pretty privilege makes me like him a lot😋
The best thing about this show for me was the Pacing. EACH AND EVERYTHING comes at the right time, nothing is rushed and it progressively gets better at the right pace and NEVER GETS BORING. It is just so perfect
@Goyim7 👍👍👍 whatever you say mate. To each their own
I hate attack on titan because it's too much serious and bloody and doesn't have funny moments others anime like naruto bleach fairy tail make me laugh sometime and make me sad sometime
I understand when people say that the characters of the boys for season 4 didn’t move anything in a new direction, but wasn’t that the point? Every character except Butcher were all just lost in their own shit while he was the only one to try and do things on his own until he realized that the only way to do things is the hard/brutal way. I mean the ending of season 4 solidified that they lost, they clearly didn’t win. A majority of what happened was in favor of the villains and what they achieved and they achieved it. If the boys actually moved the plot along then that would just show that homelander as a character and the new members of the seven are pointless in even being there as they would just be useless as threats and we would just have another season of the boys winning, this was the penultimate season and now we get the ending with season 5. It was just as bad is it is then it would be a show with no ending in sight that just produces season after season. At least with Gen V it’s still a proper connection and then the spinoff with Stormfront and Soldier Boy are happening after the main show ends and is just a prequel, so it’s at least a prequel that doesn’t even require catching up on the main show itself. If it was that awful then it could just be a Disney/Star Wars IP where we have to constantly watch everything else in order to make sense.
Answer to this is simple , according to the show runners , men - selfish , ambitious , bad 😈😈😈 women - selfless , kind , victims of the patriachy 🤡🤡🤡
Less then a minute into the video, just wanted to say that is a great intro. I am intrigued!
Now that I've watched, here's my answer to what she wants via a little Alicent arc: 1. Wants to please her father, and for her obedience and dutiful sacrifices to payoff 2. Finds out that disobedience and undutiful acts of others are often hidden and ignored. She gave up so much that Rhaenyra just gets away with. Wants justice. 3. Witnesses the tragic consequences of the emotional pursuit of justice. Becomes extremely conflicted about what she wants. Begins to explore what options she has other than playing a role she hates. Becomes more like Rhaenyra by being discerning about what rules she follows and what orders she obeys. 4. Wants to make amends, but it's too late.
Well, let's be honest, he has to be monster to establish such huge empire. as he said, sometimes it's a competition of who got the bigger d*ck
I know I'm late but I think Made In Abys is a good match.
It’s all of them. He has his selfish reasons but justification. But he also just spewing all of them as he talks
Light did not defeat L. He did not outsmart him to gain victory. He blackmailed a shinigami to kill L.
Poor Matsuda
HH's inner monologues in fighting drives me crazy, it explains way too much too a point that's so edgy and cringy
I haven't started the video yet, so I'll come back to this, but this is what Alicent wants: Rhaenyra. In the confusing way in which, at fourteen, you want to be with your friend and BE your friend at the same time. There is an OBVIOUS queer subtext there and I don't know how people don't see it.
Fire and blood isn't a love story. If they wanted to present a some sort of forbidden love in westeros society, then they didn't to name it adaption from F&B.
@@Loki-g3k exactly. You got story about stepmother hating her stepdauther because both wanted power, and turned that into friendship/love/main relationship of series. Rhaenyra got over lucerys death in one episode, but still holding on friendship that was broken 2 decades ago?? And both women are basically without ambition, Rhaenyra wants throne because prophecy, alicent because Viserys mumbled about aegon.
No other show has ever gotten me more hooked. No other show has ever given me emotions that I didn't know I had. No other show has ever given my goosebumps, goosebumps. No other show has made me cry this much for so many fictional characters and events. No other show has anywhere near as many perfectly executed plot twists. AoT is in my opinion the closest we have ever gotten to a perfect show, in every regard. If I could, I would delete this show from my memory, so that I could experience it for the first time again over and over again for the rest of my life
The show just has an obsession with making team green the villains even though they are in the right. Ageon II should be king, by the laws of the land, and Rhaenyra cheating on her husband should be frowned upon. But because of her power she is able to live above the law. Even killing people who point out the reality of what she is doing. The show writers can't seem to bring themselves to acknowledge this and instead have Alicent bow to her and 180 on her position selling out the family she loves so she can run away and do nothing. Talk about taking a powerful female character and butchering her. She went from "we must take the throne because if we do not we will all be killed, as it is rightfully ours" to "please kill all my male children. I just want to be a homeless drifter with my daughter". They absolutely ruined her character.
Your talk about how the character arks are the best part of shows you should watch lost I would love your thoughts on lost such a unique show
Her story is so tragic
brilliant analysis, lights character truly transcends time
light is the god that the world needs, death note was a masterpiece
I think she’s a pick me and that she becomes more and less vulnerable to it depending on who she feels supported by and connected with. Rhaenyra became kind of rude to her after the marriage. She straight up says she’s lonely and Rhaenyra does not seem to care much. Rjaenyra is not much a friend to her anymore and is not supportive. Alicent, I’m so many ways, does not have anyone who supports her unconditionally and at an equal footing. Still not ok what she did though.
She want to fulfill her duty-as a lady of her status, as a wife, as a queen, as a mother-but she also wants to survive, which in such complex situations and dynamics that she’s thrusted into, ultimately end up conflicting one another. This is what makes her seem so contradictory, and is what makes her in my opinion, the most realistic character in HotD
Oh my god, light is SO a terrible protagonist. He murders so many people that he's practically an antagonist. I can't believe people are still calling light a protag after all he's done smh my head.
Someone failed literature lmfao protagonist is just the main character of the story. Google before you start yapping online next time
Light the goat
Protagonist depends on the viewer. I view him as an antagonist and L and Near as protagonists.
Honestly this is Viserys fault. his own sons eye was cut out he was maimed for life. And Viserys does not even scold them. then he proceeds to essentially threaten his own children whit Alicent and Alicent herself. He could have handled that in any other way and it would not have been as disastrous
@@ayiza8511 well sorry he didnt want to maim his grandson even younger than his son. They are threatened to not call Rhaenyra's kids bastards, they Could have just not do that. And you may recall otto wanting aegon on thire lot earlier...
Alicent in season 1 and 2 are completely different people. She wanted to protect her children for them to live. then in season 2 she sells them out to Rheanys she sells out her three sons her brother and father and her lover. all in order to run off to Essos whit Healena and her granddaughter.
6:19 what a pompous thing to say
Initially, I thought she wanted revenge, but at this point who knows what she wants. Great video though
139 likes, exactly as it should be
Alicent cannot Usurper Rhaenyra. The throne rightfully belonged to her son from the moment he was born no matter what Viserys wanted. That is just how monarchy works. A mere daughter can NEVER come before a son. Everything Alicent says is completely true and right she does not need to justify it. By the standards, laws and time period she lives in she always does the right thing.
@@Iruma366 lot of westeros disagreed with greens reasoning.
@@anjadjurovic9617 Nobody in Westeros disagreed with the greens reasoning. They supported the blacks in spite of it because they made promises. That is not the same thing. They supported Rhaenyra’s claim not because they believed she was the rightful heir but to assuage their own personal honor.

That is a rhetorical question by the way because there is none.

Alicent has gone down as one the most Butchered characters in Book to Screen. Theyve removed any and all of her villianous Attributes at the cost of beating us over the head with the message of "women in Westeros are marginalized" but the truth is she is so weak and useless to the Green faction to the point that they literally have to make her sabotage her own faction and her own family just because shes not in power. Jesus christ i hate Alicent in this show, especially compared to her Book Counterpart who was without a doubt the heart of the Green Factions rise to power. How is Cersei a better mother in comparison to Alicent?
Applying today’s unrealistic standards to fictional and or historical events is really boring and overdone to the extreme. People watch these shows (and the videos made about them) to escape all the woke self righteous nonsense we’re subjected to on a daily basis in real life. Your interpretation ruins the allure of the little bit of escapism available.
At the beginning I would have said Alicent wants power, and to see her children sit the Iron Throne, and by extension elevate house Hightower through them. After watching the whole thing idk what she wants.
Honestly it seems like their mistake was making Alicent's character revolve around Rhaenyra, mainly being motivated by jealously and bitterness. As well as having Alicent be the symbol for women who side with the Patriarchy and being the foil to Rhaenyra. I don't mind this being a apart of Alicent's character but she should have had her own motivations, grounded in her own life experience and outlook on life. Alicent's love for her children, her views on precedent/order, and wanting to finally have agency n power, would have been great internal motivations for her to Crown Aegon and be Team Green.
You were correct!
I always viewed it as though, as you said, Alicent, first justified her feelings of jealousy by telling herself that she was good, honorable, and decent, in contrast to Rhenera's behavior, which Alicent performed as many mental gymnastics as she needed to in order to make that behavior into something immoral and wrong even though she knows how Rhenera feels about her situation. I also think that hearing Viseris speak of the Aegon she thought was her son, made her feel like she was right. The whole time she was right, she was good and moral and her son was the rightful King and Rhenera had lost her way through immorality and selfishness. I genuinely think that it gave her an immense amount of backing to actually commit to being an enemy to Rhenera. I think she really hung on to that as proof that she was justified in her jealousy. I actually believe that she didn't really have it in the scope of her view how much pain and sorrow her decisions could possibly cause. I don't think that her father clued her in or prepared her for that much bloodshed and how things can get out of hand. I think that she always felt guilty though, because deep down she knew her feelings about Rhenera were petty and born of stupid things like jealousy. But the prophecy, the prophecy legitimized all that! Right? And then when it all comes crashing down, when she is starting to see the consequences of her actions and it begins to shake her faith she holds on to that prophecy like it is the last life raft, in a torrential ocean. But once Rhenera comes to see her and shatters the illusion of that prophecy, once Alicent truly believes it, accepts it, then and only then does her house of cards truly fall down. I don't think she ever felt good about what she did with sir Kristen Cole. I don't think anything that happened with Rhenera sat well with her. Nor anything that her father had asked / forced her to do. I also think she is well aware that her sons are a bit mad, think of how she talks about Aemon when he's not in the room. So I think by going back to Rhenera, she is trying to set things back to true north, she's trying to get her worldview back to that good, honorable, and moral way she thought it was going to be. However, the truth she is going to have to learn is the fact that they've gone too far, as Rhenera said they cannot go back. But Alicent so desperately wants to set things right that she is willing to soft agree to let her son be killed in order to fix her "mistake". I don't think her arc is broken, I think that she as a character is a flawed person, which I don't think isn't all together bad thing to show in the series. Not everyone has a militant mind, not everyone can play the game of thrones, and Alicent was never born with the fortitude that it would take to truly play the game. I never thought that. So I guess we'll have to see, but I don't think that it ruined anything. I just think it's doing something with a character that might be more realistic than anybody would like to admit.
Sorry, no. you've completely misinterpreted this. Alicent was never going to be a villain from the very first episode because the entire point is that none of the horrific events that were pressed upon her and that resulted in all of her 'villainous' actions are reflective of her genuine desires. "What does she want?" she's asking herself the same question, maybe freedom? maybe rhaenyra. maybe she wants to be herself. I don't understand why the fandom refuses to consider alicent as a character beyond the illegitimate desires and machinations of the other characters we see surrounding her, is it simply because "evil woman who loves her children" is such an attractive trope? i think her characterization has consistently been much closer to "mentally ill traumatized repressed woman who cannot fully love her children no matter how hard she tries"
@@rhaenatargaryen8061 because this was supposed to be adaptation of story where alisent was villainus stepmom? Why is more interesting to have this instead of consistent character from fire and blood?
Not fully able to love her children vs selling them out are very different.
