Hank Cramer singing aboard the Lady Washington
I was generously invited to join my friend Hank Cramer for an evening sail aboard the Lady Washington (featured in the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie as the Interceptor). Hank is a brilliant singer and historian, and he's often invited to sing old sea shanties aboard the Lady Washington as it sails. I took this video of Hank with my phone around sunset while he sang an especially great song.

Crossing the Mozambique-Tanzania border

In 2010 we spent a month travelling up the Mozambique coast, eventually coming to the Tanzanian border at a very remote border post. The extreme NE corner of Moz is very, very remote, and we were travelling by public transport.

This was a church that my wife and I attended occasionally while living and working in Zombodze (Ngwane) as Peace Corps Volunteers (2008-2010). A storm seriously damaged the building 6 or 7 years beforehand, but the congregation kept on meeting there (not many other options). Swaziland: kids singing at a Neighborhood Care Point (NCP)

The Chiefdom of Zombodze, in Swaziland, had about 7 NCPs functioning while I served there as a Peace Corps Volunteer (2008-2010, and this is one of them near a little store. NCPs function like soup kitchens for orphaned and vulnerable children: they're given a meal and (hopefully) an educational lesson each day. Swaziland: National Grand Prize for high school Junior Achievers business class

One of my projects as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Swaziland (now Eswatini) was to run an entrepreneurship/small business class at Ngwane Central High School in Zombodze. Sponsored by Junior Achievers, this class culminated in a national competition and "top 10" convention in which the grand prize was announced. And our group won it. This video (2009) shows the moment they won, and how they reacted.
Swaziland: Local Volunteer Training Day

This is a training day for the volunteer women who help provide one meal per day at Neighborhood Care Points (NCPs) for Zombodze's vulnerable children. We arranged for a red Cross trainer to come and teach them the basics of tracking the number of kids served, and the amount of food used (which is donated by the WFP, USAID, and others).

Swaziland: handwashing lesson at neighborhood care point (NCP)

This handwashing lesson for young kids is being taught by some high school students infromour school health club. It's being held at a Zombodze (Ngwane) Neighborhood Care Point (NCP), where children can come to get one meal per day from volunteer mothers. We teach the high school club members, and they in turn teach younger kids.
