    Without a shred of doubt, it was incomplete. There is no way to refute that. The "bosses" were a joke, the oak stake thing was ridiculous (and could have EASILY been leagues better), and it's crystal clear that "Dracula's Castle" was a ludicrously egregious insult to everyone who played C-Vania 1 (or even Vampire Killer). Yes, the music was wonderful, the graphics were fine, and the gameplay wasn't abysmal. But CV2 was absolutely incompetently incomplete. No exceptions.

    I didn't grow up with Sonic 2 for the Game Gear, but it was the first Game Gear Sonic I ever tried, via Sonic Gems Collection. I had heard many a tale of its difficulty and wanted to experience it for myself. I have since beaten every Game Gear Sonic title, including Drift 2 which is one of the hardest games I've ever played in my life due to the unlock condition for the "final race". But I digress. Sonic 2 here is probably my favorite of the bunch, even though looking at it honestly, it doesn't compare to many of its 8-bit siblings. I just really like it. Great soundtrack, cool ideas, Sonic himself feels very good to control imo. The hard parts have become second nature to me, except the first boss which still makes me tense (i don't understand why they thought it needed to have harder patterns in the Game Gear version), and the hang glider which I rarely bother with. Crystal Egg reminds me of World 9 in Mario Lost Levels. You get to the end of a difficult game under special conditions, and your reward is a... weirdly easy yet very strange area. Almost like a dream. Both conceal a brutal fang under their easy exterior. World 9 only gives you 1 life in the Famicom version of Lost Levels, while Crystal Egg has a powerful final boss encounter. I've played the Master System version before. The extra screen space alone is a huge improvement I admit, but I still prefer the Game Gear version purely for aesthetic reasons. It's slightly more "complete", as Master System is missing some effects like the blue water in Aqua Lake 2, and is missing the good ending music and final jingle. I always see a mountain of copies of this game at the bookstore I often go to (or at least, used to before my life got crazy). Guess nobody wants it. Poor Sonic 2. If I had a Game Gear I'd totally grab one.

    • @RockinKatReviews
      @RockinKatReviews 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love the world 9 comparison that’s pretty spot on especially that final boss encounter…. Its brutal and I’m not quite sure if that’s more so due to the screen crunch but u have to really have that electrical field pattern down when u enter the chamber or it’s over before it begins.. but it’s as you said there are some trade off between the GG and MS release and it’s almost the matter of preference at that point. Sonic 2 def has so many creative rides wrapped up in it! Also which bookstore are they giving out GG sonic 2’s bc that is awesome… I remember seeing copies of GG Sonic 2 getting clearanced out at toys r us when majesco rereleased the gamegear along with S2 and Sonic spinball so S2 does have a lot of rereleased copies. I think someone needs to stock pile them and pass them out on holloween like candy

      @RockinKatReviews Bookmans is kind of an "all-media" store, not sure what you'd call that but yeah they sell used games, consoles, movies, records, CDs, figures. It's just that books are the main focus. I'd love to be rich enough to be able to give away Sonic games on Halloween. On a side note. Your best friend in Scrambled Egg Zone is the pause button. Sonic moves way too fast in the tubes to get by on reaction time alone, especially on the tiny Game Gear screen. Spam that pause like it's Battletoads (another great game with a lot of flaws). Also I think maybe the pictures with Tails in them are to show that Tails is always on Sonic's mind. Imagining his buddy by his side, a reminder of what he's fighting for. And on that note, I believe this does take place after the Genesis Sonic 2, despite releasing before it. The lore seems to suggest that the beginning of Sonic 2, Emerald Hill and such, is when Tails first started following Sonic around, as they both witnessed Eggman's attack on Westside Island shortly after meeting.

    • @RockinKatReviews
      @RockinKatReviews 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@robertanderson9447 that makes sense it would come after but the only thing I couldn’t wrap my head around is when that moment was that they met… it sorta felt up for interpretation due to GG having 6 chaos emeralds. Makes me think they maybe had already began work on the GGS2 as maybe a spin off game and it slowly became Sonic 2 8 bit? I would also like to know your opinion on Sonic 1 8 Bit. Do you consider it a sequel to GennyS1? Especially with the added zones and Eggman borrowing bowsers airship 😆

    • @robertanderson9447
      @robertanderson9447 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RockinKatReviews The canon regarding the GG titles is weird. I think what likely happened is Sonic Team would give Aspect some details/assets from the Genesis games before they were finalized, and so Aspect's games would naturally end up having differences/inconsistencies. Like how Knuckles' laugh animation in Triple Trouble is based on an early version of the Sonic 3 animation. I've seen some call the GG games an alternate timeline because of stuff like the 6 emeralds, which probably makes more sense, but it's fun to imagine them being on the same timeline. After all, you never see Super Sonic in these games (aside from a rare cameo on the end signs in Sonic Blast) The Japanese manual for Genesis Sonic 1 establishes through dialogue from Sonic and Eggman that this is not their first encounter, in fact they've been going at it for a while now. It also presents Eggman stuffing the animals into robots as being something he never did before. The Japanese GG manual doesn't have any of this, instead just describing how Eggman landed on South Island one day and trapped the animals in capsules, so Sonic had to stop him. And (due to sprite limits) animals don't pop out of robots in that game. Also, the first boss of 8-bit S1 is just the Eggmobile by itself, no frills or weapons. It's like Eggman doesn't know Sonic, thinking he's just another animal at first. Ultimately it's up to interpretation what 8-bit S1 is exactly, but I choose to view it as a prequel to 16-bit S1 for these reasons. Let's just say that after Eggman stole the airship, Bowser tightened his security and Eggman didn't feel like sneaking into one of Bowser's World 8's again.

      @@robertanderson9447 It def would get messy trying to place chaos and triple trouble into the timeline.. I would love to see a reimagining of the GG stages of S1 with a 16 bit Genny paintjob. I know they made a triple trouble fan game that looks incredible and Bowser def needs to tighten up maybe it was his lost levels counterpart that dropped the ball. I forget if they called him a brother or a clone 😆

    I'll always have a fondness for the game for being the only Castlevania I could ever complete 100% clean, no cheats, no codes, no save states. Simon not only got _tremendously_ powerful weapons but an almighty defense (the Laurels), and every foe could be overcome with the right tactic. The multiple endings gave this replay value, and the time requirement for the best ending was challenging but definitely doable, which is how it should be. For the life of me I'll never understand the outrageously bitter, angry, hostile reaction to the townsfolk spewing misleading claims, random drivel, and outright lies. Seemingly _no one_ ever caught on to the truth that was, frankly, delivered with all the subtlety of an ICBM: *You cannot trust ANY of these people. It is twaddle. ALL of it. You will NEVER learn ANYTHING useful. Don't listen to them. Don't trust them. Don't try to dope out what the "correct translation" was. Don't invent interpretations. Just ignore it, EVERY WORD.* The whole _point_ was that the solutions were well-hidden, sometimes even cryptic, and the game was _not_ going to spoonfeed them to you. You had to look up guides, talk to people who knew, or just brute-force stuff one at a time until something worked. Progress in this game was _earned,_ not doled out by some random bumpkin on the street. Even in the pre-Internet age, you'd think that at some point _someone_ would've wised up to exactly what kind of game Konami was making here, but nope. (Seriously, is there anyone who still doesn't get this? I swear this is at least the third time I've posted all this stuff on a TH-cam video response.)

      That’s sort of how I’ve always looked at it. Modern horror games series today build entire series around lore and playing off fan reactions. I always point at a series today like fnaf that never gives you a beginning or end to any story only leaving you with more questions. I feel a great deal of Simon’s quest charm is that the game gives you this sort of extreme game of telephone. If this game came out today it would have an entire community built around solving the clues and to be fair I believe there in their. Your told to kneel at the lake to use the blue crystal which indicates how to use the crystals outside of the mansion.. There’s also two clue for the red crystal of banging your head and also waiting at the cliff…why would u stand if you just used the blue crystal to kneel bc u can also use the red crystal on the lake by kneeling also

    It is certainly a divisive game, as much as I like it I can understand plainly why others do not. This is an odd game where the challenge isn't so much in the gameplay, merely in figuring out where to go and what to do. The actual gameplay is not challenging at all, the game allows you to pick up right where you left off when you die, you have unlimited lives, and there is only one possible softlock area at the very end of the game.

      Excellent take on things. I also always looked at the infinite lives as Simon slowly being consumed by the curse only to slowly turn into a walking corpse 😆

    I'm glad someone understands what they were going for in this game. From what I've read, most of the translation isn't _horribly_ far off from what they said in Japanese, conveying roughly the same info. Though a couple of the hint books were sadly mangled ("A flame flickers in the ring of fire" was originally a hint about the Sacred Flame being in a cave). The end of the game is a personal favorite of mine. Everyone loves a brutal final area followed by a classic multi-phase Dracula battle, but this hits completely different. It's empty. A corpse of a castle. You enter a drop much too far to climb back out of. There's truly no turning back now. The final battle itself is admittedly kind of weak when taken at face value, lacking much strategy as Dracula spins around the room firing his nails madly. I choose to view it as Dracula's deadly curse on Simon taking physical form, its full power being released in an uncontrollable, mindless wave of destruction. If Simon is strong enough he can destroy the curse as it manifests, otherwise he must simply survive the ravaging of his body and soul long enough to prevail. It's a very atmospheric game for the 80's, and even today with the right mindset.

      I think that’s absolutely spot on and an excellent take on the Dracula fight. The entire final area from the town leading up to the castle just changes the entire mood completely. I always felt that the clues were almost a game of telephone in a sense . If the clues were spelled out the game would have ended as fast as u could have rented it. I almost felt like they wanted us to spread the word about the mystery’s to friends and so forth. How games today almost build on lore and a growing community attempting to solve the developers games

      @@RockinKatReviewsI think a lot of it is just, people naturally start to view games differently over the years for a multitude of reasons. What was valued in 1987 isn't valued the same way in current day. Games can no longer get away with making you spend so much time figuring out how to progress. Even if they try, a walkthrough is always readily available online. And with so many great games in the world, it's a mindset of, why should I waste my time on this when I could be doing, or _playing_ something else with that time? I understand this mindset, as loads of people are busy with life. But I also feel it leads to a lot of old games getting unfairly trashed in the eyes of history. Games like Simon's Quest are classics for a reason, they just come from a different time, with a different gaming landscape in mind. There are absolutely still bad games from the era, more than can be counted, but this isn't one of them.

      @ That makes a lot of sense too. I would also like to try to dig up a few numbers also. One would be how many Nes games were officially out in the US by 88 and how well the game sold in comparison to other releases that year. Whenever I try to compile any list of top games or something along the lines I always try to factor in hardware and how the game culturally impacted gaming at that time. Like with Zelda which I believe came out a year earlier I feel Simon’s Quest brought a great deal of originality to the nes so I would still rank it decently on any list.
