    • @Sirmoshi1
      @Sirmoshi1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you can use Leveling thinner it will work ok ,the rapid thinner and the Gaia Metallic master thinner just helps the metal flake settle more evenly but leveling thinner is fine to use ,the results will be just fine just spray light coats and maybe let it settle for a few seconds in between the coats so the metal flake has a chance to settle better

    got mine on monday and all cut off the runners and sanded ready for painting last night and planned to start painting this today. the molding on this kit is fantastic with it actually coming with decent panel line depths and not really requiring any touch up scribing. i came super close to picking a black for that dark blue though as until i read the manual i swore it was black lol. that gold is definitely "better" as you said but mine still has a ton of spots where two gate's flow collided and built up swirly color lines particularly in the area where the dragoons/fin funnels meet together. yours looks great snap built. this is definitely gonna look great up peoples shelves. i noticed the plastic foil stickers are seemingly much thinner than the ones that came with schwarzette is that the case that they much more flexible/less rigid? seeing this i planned to paint the pink with a candy over chrome i think as i'd die if i put down most stickers fine and messed up one with wrinkles or misalignment lol. one more thing, i know you use the modo thinner with the added retarder like i do but fyi the new line of Kaizo thinners that robot kai is carrying are awesome and work out even cheaper unless the modo is on a well discounted sale and as robot kai was the only place with modo at a good price and as they have no plans to restock it i doubt we will see modo thinner at $14/liter again. so far in testing the kaizo standard thinner levels as well or better than mr leveling or modo+retarder with less solvent pop than either and seems to be very very forgiving with application. keep the vids coming!

    The shelf life is many years ,and as for how many kits you can paint with them depends on you ,everyone paints differently ,like I have colors I bought in 2020 that I still have almost a full bottle of since I use more than 1 color to paint a kit some just get used for details and others I have sprayed 5 or more kits with and still have half the bottle left ,if I had to guess though out of a 60ml bottle you can probably get 5 to 8 kits depending on how many coats you spray .

    Couple of questions: how do you clean the bottles after you exhaust the color? Lacquer thinner? The acetone in there shouldn’t play very nice with plastic. And do you get any paint deterioration after you pre-thin your paints? How long do you figure you can safely keep them stored pre-thinned?

    • @Sirmoshi1
      @Sirmoshi1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never cleaned a bottle since there is a label on it I just buy that same color and reuse the same bottle ,the paint is good for at least 4 years pre thinned maybe more I have never had any paint not stay good ,and the oldest paints I have pre mixed is about 4 or 5 years old now and still no issues ,if you do not want to reuse the bottle for the same color then just throw it away the bottles are very cheap to buy if you look at the links I have in the comment section !

    i was ready to make a drinking game of you saying "almost there" lol. i mix almost all my colors and have said that a few hundred plus times myself. an important thing to consider with bandai manual paint recommendations is they are for the acrylic line and not the lacquer and while the ranges are similar they are definitely different enough to effect mixing ratios. mixing by weight always yield a more consistent result for me when i need to repeat the color should i run out of the mix. with a 15 dollar digital scale that weighs in 1/100ths of a gram it is easy enough to scribble the weight in grams of each color on a piece of wide masking tape and stick to the bottle with the model and runner it is mixed for. i much prefer this method now and to mix up just a few ml at a time maybe 10-30ml of thinned paint and mix more if needed. another thing to consider if mixing according to the color swatches in the manual is both the integrity of the reproduced printing compared to the anime and the lighting source you view it in. i worked in a printing house that made manuals for medical and home electronics when those were still a thing and not a qr code prompting you to use your data to download a pdf and i can say with confidence that the final output is within an acceptable range to the customer and accuracy across thousands of pages is expensive. i have countless manuals from bandai listing a single color abnd when you prime an paint the manual itself next to the swatch they are radically different with the swatch being almost orange instead of the yellow orange for example on my nu gundam rg manual (think the difference between walmarts cheapest egg's yolk and whole food's most expensive one's). of course it won't help to view it under poor lighting that doesn't show as full a spectrum as possible. i've found it helps to also paint a bit over the runner or a primed runner and let it dry before settling on the color. while not as obvious as with household latex paint for walls, hobby paints still can lighten or darken when dry. but ultimately it comes down to your happiness unless you are shooting for anime accuracy and thats the only thing that will make you happy haha

      Thank you for the info ,yes I usually just buy a color that looks correct to me and spray it ,but I figured I would try this out ,i as told that the Bandai manels all match the lacquer mr color catalog from almost every one of my friend in Japan that paint and build Gundpla so idk about the Acrylic part but yes in the end I did almost match the correct color or at least in the bottle we will see once I have sprayed it ,I will be trying this again for the Justice Gundam build in the near future because they honestly do not make the correct color in any of the lines that I use for the pinkish purple red color so this ended up being a trial and error deal and figured I would share my experience .

    So, when you add all that thinner does the paint still work well? i normally use mr surfacer 1500 and mr leveling thinner and i do 1:1.5 paint:thinner so what is the benefit of adding all that extra thinner? thank you i am trying to learn and i am new to airbrushing. i airbrush gunpla.

    • @Sirmoshi1
      @Sirmoshi1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes the paint is made to be thinned out ,check out my Mr Color mixing tutorial for the proper pre mix 1 to 1.5 is incorrect it should be 2 to 1 ,so you would get 30ml from a 10ml bottle and the mixing ratio is the same for the surfacer it should also be 2 parts thinner to 1 part surfacer for best spray ability and coverage ,think of it as a concentrate ,it is made to be thinned out so by pre thinning your paint it gives you more and it also allows it to be sprayed from the airbrush and give a even coat to the surface you are spraying it on ,also helps the lacquer to dry at a extremely fast rate

    If you are using 3:1 thinner to surfacer ratio, should you not have 150ml thinner to 50ml surfacer for a total of 200ml? If your bottle is 150ml, thats a 2:1 ratio if I am not mistaken.

    • @Sirmoshi1
      @Sirmoshi1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      surfacer is only a 50 ml jar mix that 3 to 1 ,so because i only have 120 ml bottles i only mix it to fill the bottle you can add more thinner later if you need but it works just as good at my mix ratio for me ,i use some then add more thinner as i use the surfacer since i only have 120 ml bottles ,i thought i mentioned something about that in the video so yes you are correct that a 50 ml bottle will make 200 ml in the end Thank you for bringing this to my attention !

    haha this is llke watching a video of myself. nearly identical methodology even down to making my own modo+retarder for way less than mr leveling and imho frankly it sprays better. i wish i could source the sds for it and find out just what is in it. curious where you got the lids for those mr hobby thinners with a flip top? are these old bottles that came like this or aftermarket caps?

      What ratio of mr thinner to mr retarder do you use to create leveling thinner?

    • @NeoPest
      @NeoPest 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i use around 9% retarder 91% thinner with the modo standard thinner and 14% retarder 86% thinner with born standard thinner and from what i can tell 16% retarder and 84% thinner with mr hobby standard thinner all perform very similar to mr hobby leveling thinner @@raular5513

    awesome info. and video just subbed. if i ever start a hobbyist channel i'll make a video referring people to this video as you juyst about covered everything really clearly and in a great educational manner. i hope you don't mind i did see a couple things of note. gaianotes specifically states on their homepage in a big disclaimer to never put a steel bearing and shake their paints up and down. they use very thin glass and this will crack them. i've had 2 of them have the bottom completely separate in a clean break and dump the contents all over my work space when using both the little saturn shaped metal things spraygunner sells and the standard 8mm steel bearings ak and others sell. i emailed them and they are obviously very aware of this as they told me in a sort of scolding manner that i should have read their disclaimer lol and are not interested in changing bottles. small glass marbles are a better choice for sure with gaia bottles but they say not to use them even. i'd say use glass beads and mix gently, using swirling vs rattling motions. this paint is too nice to throw away for sure. it simply wont shake well at un thinned viscosity so i just focus on getting the leftover pigments out during the thinner washes of the bottle while topping up the large bottle like you did and really never had anything that would not come out from this. if you mix up your paint like this video shows you really only gotta worry about it once so its not too hard to not practice maracas with this one brand but these are richly pigmented and many of their ultra finely ground pigments do tend to stay in the sharp bottom corner in a dense cake so anyone who gets these definitely needs to mix it really well. i think it is a very good practice to premix if you only intend to airbrush the paint as you are able to get a perfect ratio of pigment to resin to thinner and every time you grab that paint you will know exactly what to expect. run off a few spoons and runner waste to see how each color lays down at specific pressures, tag the bottle with best range and make fast work when actually painting. if anyone is nervous of premixing solvent paints you should be. but only enamels or if, heaven forbid, you use homedepot lacquer thinner instead of a japanese brand. enamel thinners will evaporate from the seal and you will pollute your space and end up with thick paint needing more thinner that is gonna outgas like the stuff it is replacing. enamels just are best mixed per job or stored in glass with a double or compression seal like alclad does with their candies. if you are a viewer and wondering these caps rarely if ever leak when used properly and they do a fantastic job of keeping lacquer solvents and alcohols in. i was nervous of this but a year later, more than 200 lacquers premixed, 51 of them gaia hehe and maybe 3 faulty caps (these bottles cost like 52 cents in bulk there's gonna be occasional duds) and i won't ever go back to mixing up lacquer paint each time i use it. just grab, shake the plastic bottle like crazy or use a orbital mixer and dispense paint throughg a mesh filter into the cup and toss the filter into a old 50 ml gaianotes surfacer bottle of 30:70 ratio of acetone:isoproanol to soak till next i clean the paint from the brush and clean the filter fully. no more daily personal pipette landfill, no dust getting into the bottle each of the 50 or so times i may use that color over its life. hobby mio sells a better cap but a worse bottle lol. bottles too stiff to squeeze and cap is amazing anti drip design.it will fit SOME other brand bottles but ive had them split where the round threaded wall meets the bevel that leads to the nozzle on others so if using hobby mio caps on other brand bottles do not overtighten. the seals really dont need much pressure tbh so just snug them. and you are correct in searching for "pet tattoo mixing bottle" to get the crystal clear hard polyethylene ones like this. omitting "tattoo" will flood the results with soft cloudy ones best for travel shampoo not hot thinned paint. even the best paper towels will make a huge flurry of static charged airborne fibers and i'm not a fan. blue shop towel can be better but nothing beats " lint free nail wipes" that look like 2" squares w rounded corners and little perforations. these rule and are worth it at about 5 cents per wipe in bulk from asia or even 10 cents in a smaller package from amazon. i tend to use less $$$$ in these than paper towel as they are so good at small wipes and dry sort of locking the paint and they dont become a soggy ball of fibers i reuse them when wiping out my paintcup in the initial stages, and they are actually soft enough they dont scratch well cured glossy paint if you need to do any post painting cleaning with soap and water and many paper towels will look like you used 800 grit if you try this i also mix my paint and thinner up front and relabel my bottles and gaia are so nice they rarely mess up especially fresh bottles. modo never mess up alclad always leave adhesive on bottle and a totally clean useless shiny foil label in your hand and jumpwind are an exercise in zen haha. i do the blade trick the same too when the label delaminates mr hobby are awful labels even brand new you gotta do this the entire peel every 1/4" and it still may tear. jumpwind if it got even slightly damp the paper becomes pulp and refuses to be nice losing all integrity. i had ok luck putting a piece of clear packing tape on those first and carefully peeling the laminated assembly off but id still likely just print any more jumpwind i buy. you would be correct to use the rapid thinner on the metallic surfacer two fold as the rapid thinner has a little more bite on the plastic at normal dilution and is ideal for any surfacer particularly, pun intended, if you are going to be overthinning it and spraying mist coats with a small needle into targeted areas of scratches in multiple layers to fill in moderate cracks as it dries so fast when over reduced it allows you to pack in the talc or whatever that paint uses in their filler and not have it mess up surrounding areas or lift the particles you have just put into the crack on prior coats and really lay coat after coat, drying in just 20-30 seconds for the next one. I've been able to smooth out some areas id messed up sanding this way and hide imperfections the initial full coats didn't fill and even fill in tiny nub divots that did not seem worth using smelly and messy putty from a witch from mercury model i nipped the purple frame that's really soft plastic while really tired and wasn't careful and pulled out plastic instead of slicing it. gaia surfacer is just amazing for this at around 1:5 thin and 13-16 psi in my ps-270. i can't recall where i saw this technique i know it was a korean gunpla builder and it seems totally counter intuitive but worked so well i rarely dont thin the final drops in the cup and look for areas to touch up before cleaning the brush out after a surfacer. finally, why does gaia metallic master have to cost more than above average 25 year old scotch?? seriously.. is wild. i got some on a storewide 30% once and wow wish id gotten more it is truly the best. not quite worth 3x other brands. i usually use born paint metal thinner from galactic toys it is about the cheapest japanese metallic thinner at 15$/500ml and frankly amazing. i think it's nicer than mr hobby rapid especially on pearls and micas and primers. these lay down so thin and smooth but seem to cover better than when thinned with leveling thinner at least at my humidity and temperature. a really wet coat of paint with born metallic thinner on bare plastic will etch so be aware if you try it out. i've only done this while deliberately flooding runners with airbrush to test how hot it is but it definitely textured the plastic. since its not meant to be sprayed like this its not an issue really when sprayed in light coats with a little time to flash between them looking forward to more videos you seem to really get what you're doing and why it works. it is refreshing with so many creators who seem to have very little desire to understand the things behind the things they have chosen to do. i promise not to write my thesis out again unless you feature metallic thinners as its sort of my passion with 80% of my pieces using predominantly gaia, born and jumpwind metallics and custom mixes i make from bulk nitrocellulose and dry pigments and lately using bulk single solvents and playing with ratios to better understand how each solvent behaves alone and interacting with others in a mix to help disperse the pigments as im not really happy being told that metallic thinner works better or even seeing that it does i absolutely have to know the mechanics behind it before being satisfied and moving onto the next quest for understanding lmfao

    Would you say the thinning ratio is the same for the Mr. Aqueous colors? I mix them 1:1 right now but would of course love to get more paint out of my jars 😅 I'm also using the Leveling Thinner since my local hobby store doesn't sell the aqueous thinner but it works just fine.

      I honestly have no idea since I don't use that line because it is not a Lacquer ,I would google it maybe so you get the best ratio but I would assume you would be able to thin it the same since you are using lacquer thinner with it ,try it the worst thing that could happen is you add another half a bottle of the same color to what you pre mixed to get your consistency back !

      @hammerhead4941 I will.be doing a pre thinning on this line of paont in the near future I just ordered some and from what I have found out you can use isopropyl alcohol to thin or you can use the Mr color leveling thinner and the are recommended to be thinned 2 to 1 so.2 thinner to 1 paint so.same.amounts you should end up with 30 ml of paint

      this is likely just useless data unless you are good at math and have good measuring tools and a day to measure the surface area and tabulate every part on the kit however gaianotes claims that with their recommended 3 thin coats thinned 1:3 you can get 0.24 square meters fully colored. i have rarely needed a third coat of gaia metallics over a good base coat fwiw. i painted a spinatio knight's armor, a red frame astray frame, a hyaku shiki mg and a 1:24 vw beetle with star bright gold and have barely use past the curved top of botlle
