Great video John 👍
Hey John, nice to see you guys are still doing the band thing. Ironhorse is still active and we play occasional gigs but would like to play more. As you point out, marketing is critical and we hate to do it! I notice this is part 1, do you have future videos planned?
Yes, I have show management and performance management. There is a posted response by @scott21113 that is pretty darn insightful! I am going to be down your way during Christmas, by the way. Multitracker is supposed to have a new version coming so, whenever that is released, I will go into that, as well. The last of my 4 part videos is Staff management and business aspect of management staff-wise. How are you guys doing? Good to hear from you!
John - we used would traditionally do three 50 minutes sets in a night with a 20-25 minute break between each - starting at 9 PM and ending around 1:20 AM. I would add this tip. We chose our songs to rotate the dance floor in the middle of each set - so about 22-25 minutes in we're bringing down the tempo and energy, let everyone go get another drink, find their friends that had come to the bar since we began - then ramp the energy back up to the final two songs (usually big energy and singable choruses by everyone - think Don't Stop Believing or Don't You Forget About Me) of the set. That would allow another drink break, let people eat if they were part of a large party, go smoke, etc. For what we called "bumper music" the in-between set songs we played from an iPod or iPhone a setlist of moderate volume, moderate tempo music, with no overlap of our setlist songs or artists. This was on purpose to not spoil the experience and introduce overlap and familiarity. You want everyone to notice the volume and energy of the place has changed when you hit the stage. If the bar had a DJ they played whatever was the normal music the bar chose with the caveat in our contract nothing on our setlist could be played by the DJ. Usually that would not be an issue and we always strove for good relationships with the DJs and tipped them from our pay if they did a good job of crowd management. Sometimes they ran the lights for the venue - so again - tipping appreciated there. I agree with the end of set music as it is super awkward to pull the plug on the gig volume levels and have the lights up with no background music. That is jarring. We ALWAYS - ALWAYS mentioned that patrons should take care of their servers and bartenders (if it was a nightclub), that seemed to go a long way with positive word of mouth by staff and turned the crowd back to the bar 4-6 times a night ($$$ for the bar owner who pays you) by modulating the tempo and energy of the set. The venue staff can be VERY influential on your being invited backs and we always took the time and effort to get to know them during load-in, learn their names, ask what music they liked, and thank them for their jobs. If we saw them out at our gigs we would give them a nice, brief shout out of appreciation. Surprisingly, they are taken for granted by most bands - if you treat them well - you are treated well in return.
WOW!! This is such valuable information!! Amazing! I am going to have to employ this stuff and do a 2.0 video thanks to you!
John - great video. Totally agree with not playing gigs for "exposure." The only unpaid gigs my band would perform were animal rescue charity events our members felt strongly about and a couple one-offs for the families of a local musician who passed as a memorial event. We played at least one shelter fundraiser event each year for a decade, considering our gig fee an in-kind "donation" for tax purposes related to the band operations. We likely booked the same amount (8-10 shows) from individuals who attended and secured us for a wedding, corporate event, etc. We did not however perform "audition" shows for bars or venues and never performed for "the door" cover charge collection. After paying our sound guy and management fees each person in the band (5 piece) earned on average $145 per man for 517 shows in the last 13 years in a major East Coast city. We created a marketing strategy and strategic plan for our band and worked it to a tee every year. When I left my replacement had a buy-out fee of $2,500 to pay me for my portion of the goodwill (backing tracks production, future bookings, social media presence, etc.) and assets (stage banners, merchandise). Basically, they were paid half of each gig take as a "sideman" payment until my "buy-out" was paid off - then they became a full 20% shareholder and particpated in the full gig take split.
@@scott21113 Wow! I am going to have to refer back to this. Lots of great ideas about buying out the band! Thanks!
@@CaliforniaCreedence John - our band member who created the majority of our sequences for backing tracks had a contract for ongoing payment from every show for 3 years after they left because the remaining and new members did not want to do a one-time lump sum for them. The time and effort that went into track creation and customization is substantial and as the band switched from Ableton to Stage Traxx they were very glad they were paying that fee to keep themselves covered. It also helped when they lost their bass player for 2 months and the backing tracks were modified to cover for the bassist. No gigs cancelled and the gig $$ flowed. Just more food for thought if that is your role in the band.
Is this your new band?
@@oneminuteguitarlessons6060 No. My band is on vacation until early 2025. I am doing sound for bands, and this one was pretty darn good! Cal Creed will be back around April 2025.
Hi John, Thanks for the video. I also use multitracker. I am interested in stage traxx. Is there a particular reason you just don’t run all the multitracks on StageTraxx? I am trying but I ran into an issue with stage traxx wanting the sample rate to be 44.1 & my cubasis seems to only want to operate at 48k to make my tracks, which isn’t an issue on multitracker. Thanks
I actually don't use StageTraxx. It is not powerful enough for my needs. If that is the case, maybe exporting Cubasis tracks as Flac since I know StageTraxx 3 can run FLAC files. Stage Traxx is more for a solo, duo or trio but not for a full band with a complete show with lights. The mixer on Stage Traxx 3 mixer and audio routing, last I checked, didn't meet the needs for me (MIDI lanes, Mixer Interface, Audio Routing without fiddling with Pan, and other things). I ported all music over to stage traxx 3 to try it fully and it was way low my threshold needs and workflow expectations! MIDI learn is not my jam, I like to assign my devices. There are other things, too.
@@CaliforniaCreedence It looks like I am going to go the same route as you. I might try to fiddle with it a little more first. Your videos have been very helpful over the years. Thanks John -from another Steelers fan from PA. 😀
@ Yes!!! Go Steelers! What a great game yesterday!!!
at 0:50 we can hear distortion, it's the sub that has reached its limit ?
Thanks for the reply! I am not hearing it. The sub has a much higher threshold and much better voicecoil than the ip300s. I can’t hear what you are hearing, but I would look more at the ip300s however, the crossover filters those frequencies so I am not sure.
@@CaliforniaCreedence ok, so maybe it's my headphones that are messing up
Your photon 2 videos have been very helpful. Not sure I am setting up the app network wise correctly. Using artnet cr021r from pknight.

Thanks for asking! I master the tracks in the DAW to get the best levels, but, ultimately, I mix within the app and save the song in the app.

Thanks for the video! Question: How do you assign outputs within the interface when using an ipad via usb?
@@vtmpe Thanks for the encouragement! Check out this video I did th-cam.com/video/Xu2joKnKBcg/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Go to 1:40 to start the actual info. Don’t let the length scare you. I go slowly so that you come out of it feeling comfortable about routing. Let me know what you think and if you need more help.
@CaliforniaCreedence thank you. I wasn't clear on my question. If I plug the ipad into the Behringer via USB, how do I assign the outputs of the Behringer so I can then connect to me digital mixer ? Will the Behringer work without having to be plugged in to a computer like when used in a DAW scenario?
@CaliforniaCreedence p.s. I hit the thumbs down button by mistake, sorry about that.
@@vtmpe ha ha!! No worries! I DO get thumbs down at times. About your clearer question, which is really good news, the UMC1820 is the best interface but the umc404hd is good too. Your iPad will see the Behringer output offerings. All of them. So, any multi output app in your iPad can smoothly route to any output on the back of the Behringer! For the 404 you get 2 stereo outputs which can be panned to be 4 outputs. The umc1820 is fantastic in that outputs 1 and 2 are stereo linked but 3 to 8 are completely independent! Think of it this way. Your iPad actually IS a DAW even if you only use it for playback. Just plug the outputs from your Behringer into your separate mixer channels. The mistake people make is trying to use an audio interface as a mixing console to combine the audio interface hardware inputs like a mixing console for instruments/vocals and combine them with the digital interface. That will not go well. However, If that is your goal, just the UI24r will do that or something like the Soundcraft Notepad 12fx. Let me know if I missed anything.
@CaliforniaCreedence Perfect, I just ordered the 404. I only need a stereo and 2 indie for click and cues. I'm using Multitracker so I'm hoping everything will work out. I'm assuming I'll pan the click and cues hard left and hard right in multitracker (the band only wants the cues). As the drummer, I'll get the click and cues in my mix. I just purchased the presonus 24 rack mixer which I saw used in another video. I connected the ipad to the usb input, the input selection window popped up, I made the selections and hit play. It played for 2 seconds (with nonsound) then stopped suddenly. I tried a few times and same thing kept happening. After a while, multitracker wouldn't even recognize the presonus. The input selector wouldn't even pop up. I bought new lightning/usb. Even bought a brand new iPad and nothing. Oddly enough, I had to return presonus and get a new replacement due to a faulty XLR input. I thought, maybe this will do it! And nothing. So that's why I decided to just go external interface as you've described. If it's ok, I'll keep you updated once the 404 gets here.
So then, so then get to the fucking point man

why doesn't it appear in bluetooth?
@@OtonielCayetano Hi Otoniel, thanks for the question. The reason it is not showing up is that is uses what is called BLE (Bluetooth low energy). So it won’s show up like your typical Bluetooth devices. You will be able to see it when you go to the subwoofer settings, then Bluetooth, and make it visible. Then it will only be seen in the JBL connect app under “Add Speaker” and it will not show in your iPad or Android Bluetooth devices. Only in the JBL app. Then, when you select the speaker in the app when it sees the 718s, you have to go back to the 718s menu to hit “Yes” or else the app will keep saying “verifying”. Be sure to only have one 718s powered up at a time when setting up in JBL connect. Once the speaker is set up in the JBL connect app, be sure to update the firmware! How do I reconnect my subwoofer to the JBL 8:08 8:08
How do I reconnect my subwoofer to the JBL
Hi James. First I would make sure that no other speaker is on except one of the subwoofers (718S), then I would not try to connect to the subwoofer via the Bluetooth in the Settings in IOS since the subs connect via the app using BLE (Bluetooth low energy). So, the 718s will not appear as an offering when you scan for it as you would scan for your air pods or any other Bluetooth device. Being that it is BLE, you can only connect to the sub if you use the app. Secondly, you will need to add speaker and the single powered up speaker SHOULD come up as an offering. Once you tap it to connect, it will just sit there and do nothing. That is because after tapping the speaker in the app, you have to go over to the sub and select "Yes" on the screen to accept the pair. This is a very common issue that is very scary to many users because they think the speaker may be defective. It is not. If you need more support I can walk you through it. After the speaker is connected, be sure to update the firmware right away. The app and connectivity are frustrating for SEVERAL users. Powering the speaker off for 1 minute and powering back on with all other speakers off resolves issues and using a different iPad or android device can also help. Let me know if you need more help. This sub will work just fine, we may need to connect if it seems impossible to connect. Good luck!

Very clear, thank you! I'm about to buy one of these. One question: after you set up for the room, do you find that you need to tweak as the room fills with people? Is that a fairly predictable change that you can guesstimate, or would you really like to repeat the wizard if you could? I'm talking a cover band without a dedicated sound man, of course.
@@paulmason828 I would pay attention to the crossover and make sure there is no overlap or summation at the crossover point. Measure the room or area with nothing blocking speaker (people walking by etc.). The level and eq settings are very durable across crowd numbers since it measures speaker behavior in the environment. I would set it and forget it.

Thank you so much for this video. It definitely helps us get started. A couple questions for you please. We are vocal group and we sometimes use a 4 to 5 piece band. We want to use multi tracker as we’ve had a musician help us with Ableton in the past. What interface do you suggest we need for all of our sequencing? Again, we have four part vocals and we will have vocal sweeteners, some extra horns, occasional secondary keys parts for padding, percussion and extra guitar. We want to be able to carry this on planes in our carry on luggage so the smallest one necessary of course would be the most beneficial to us. Thank you again.

Only (MIDI in our case or system exclusive in other cases) is needed with a clock source to automate lights. AI would likely make the process easier by the way. In this video I show how I use the respective apps to make the light show work. th-cam.com/video/RU-JmCCkQlU/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Most bands use the sound-trigger paradigm to avoid all the work, but that is not a light show, it is more like dj situations (still exciting). For us, Backing tracks feed to photon very easily by inter-app within the iPad. MIDI track output is selected to Photon ( it’s just that easy!). Photon sends WiFi DMX to a router (no need for internet), which sends via Ethernet to a DMX node which transmits wirelessly to Donner Wireless receivers (one per lighting cluster and the rest of the lights are wired and dependent on the receiver) which results in lightning that is timed. Apps, node, Donners are still about $500 in total. The nice thing is that light shows can be changed or updated fairly easily. I hope this makes sense! The signal flow of the lights can easily be a little bit delayed since light travels much faster than sound, so they hit very close to the same time.
Excellent video! Helped me out a great deal! Thanks!
Can you teach me how to load by backing tracks and build a set on multitracker
@@julianoteyza22b I sure can. Let me see if I can make a video of that. If you need help you can email me at johnobrien@californiacreedence.com
Thanks -- can you save ALL your settings, presets and all Show/Snapshots using this method (or only 1 snapshot with the settings/presets, slide out bar settings, etc.)? Thanks!
@@DavidOHearn1963 the Jason file saves only one snapshot with the settings and presets/cues, slide out bar settings, etc. Also, when importing the Jason file, it will not load the snapshot name, so it looks like it didn’t import, but it did, you just need to name and save it.
@@CaliforniaCreedence thank you!!
Great video🤗. #OliafCandy
How do they sound vs. a 15-inch EV or any other 15-inch speaker?
@@rockingsurfer1 TBH, I am not WOWed by these. The videos comparing these to the QSC k12.2 are foolish. There is no comparison. The QSC’s are superior. I purchased these SRM212’s to make the band an easier setup and breakdown. As you can see, I have no videos touting the positives about these. They are very midrange heavy, but they can go loud. Thankfully, I have the dbx driverack PA2 to make them sound better than they should. Regarding EV, I have found a wild range in quality between their speakers. You have the ELX, EKX and ETX which vary quite a bit. The difference between 12 and 15 inch speakers usually tend toward a more favorable sound with 12”. To get low end from a top speaker, the displacement of the woofer has more to do with it than the size. Displacement is the distance the speaker pumps back and forth.
@@CaliforniaCreedence thanks for the detailed reply!
Most helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.
Thanks! It was a bit rushed, but you had a good point in that if I am talking about the DriverackPA2 in the previous video, why would I not address how that impacts my setup.
A video on how you use your Driverack would be really interesting
@@oneminuteguitarlessons6060 I will do that one this weekend.
You could eliminate the additional soundcard, run your backtracks via Soundcraft UI24R usb.
@@FransJCMartins Thanks for that observation! At the time of the video, I failed to mention that we used to use the audio interface, but at a gig I tripped over the USB cord and broke the port. We got another UI24R and on the video I titled My Setup, we are back to using the UI24R onboard sound card. I should have clarified. Again, thanks for leaving this comment. I love the UI24R!
@@CaliforniaCreedence Thanks, so do I ❤️ This thing is next level 😉
Now that was a really good video!! 👏👏👏👏
