    A book has to live somewhere 😻 made me thing of how I once bought Jamila by Aitmatov because I felt the price of 50 cent was an insult to the book. As if the book had feelings. And now that I think of it, it was stupid too, se could have gotten a great book for almost nothing and price and worth are not the same. Argh. Have a great day!

      @PoorPersonsBookReviewer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I dont think it was stupid, maybe every individual book doesn't have feelings but every story has and essence. and if the book meant something to you? (like you beautifully said). price and worth are not the same. ill add Jamila to my watch list to buy lol

    hi there, friend. look at how long it's taken me to get to this video! i'm not sure why but this year seems more crazy busy than last year. and that's saying a lot. i've been sick too (but getting better) and trying to rest as much as possible but it's nearly impossible with work and everything else that's always going on. i'm sure you know how it is! boy, it looks like you had a tough week with some books there. you get a gold star for sticking with them to the end. not sure i would have. then again i have this thing where i feel like i have to finish a book if only to say "it sucks!" but as i always say: life is too short i believe it was me that recommended clarice lispector's the hour of the star. 😁 SO glad to hear that you liked it. i've read it many, many times and i never get tired of it. i used it in my upper level english classes for my 12th graders for many years and it was always a hit. so simply written but so deep. i hope you will go back and reread it every once in a while. in fact, it may be time for me to read it again. ah, bartleby the scrivner. it's a classic for a reason. brilliant text! i think the fact that it has a subtitle - a tale of wall street - is a big hint to what the novella is about. remember the story isn't really about bartleby, right? it's about his employer. if we think about wall street today, then we realize that nothing much has changed in nearly 200 years. sigh i recently picked up a pretty nice used copy of an elric omnibus edition. i forget which one. i've never been interested in elric but the outlaw bookseller loves moorcock so i'm going to give it a try. not sure when i'll start though..... i just finished lake of darkness by adam roberts and it was the best sf book or really any type that i have read this year. highly recommended! unfortunately, it's not been published in the u.s. yet (i managed to find a u.k. copy on ebay that wasn't too expensive) but keep an eye out for it in the future. i've read other books by roberts but this one is the best so far you and your politics and rants. love it! i'm very upset lately myself as i wanted to vote for jill stein but the democrats have kept her off the ballot again this cycle so i can't vote for her. it means i will continue to vote for "none of these candidates." i would humbly ask you to consider voting third party so that we can begin to destroy the two party system. it has to go! okay, i will leave it there. oh! before i go, let me just say that if you are not looking for more books these days then.....go back and read something else that i recommended! ;) maybe another thomas disch novel? on wings of songs? (you'll LOVE it!) that's all i have time for now. will get to this week's video as soon as i can. take care and until next time.... ⛓⛓⛓

      hi friend thx so much for writing , honestly i was a lil worried when i didnt hear from you. Not that you have to write, just that i noticed your absence. glad to hear your feeling better thank you so much for recommending "the hours of the stars" , that and Bartleby really was the bright part of a somewhat disappointing reading week. your students are lucky to have a teacher with such a cool reading curriculum. i never really thought about it from the employers POV, I'll have to think about that for a bit 🤔 im happy im not the only person who the outlaw book seller is influencing, but after all you are the one that recommended him to me in the first place. even though i have only read a few elric stories, I think that they're better as episodic stand alone and dont need a continuing story line. much like Conan. You must have picked up the last cheap copy of Lake of Darkness (good for you) all the ones i saw were going for full price or more but i only did a quick search. but now that it's on my list ill just have to play the waiting game. or like you said Thomas Disch is sitting right there lol (thx again for those) Poor Jill Stine ive been seeing a lot of democrat backed anti Jill ads. not good when you gotta spend and focus on going after a 3rd party candidate who has no chance of winning. me thinks again thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to write, ill forgive you if you just leave an emoji Take care till next time⛓

    Do you have any advice for actually finishing books? I'm impressed by how many of these books you read and finish so often. I try to spend a hour a day reading but it takes me over a month to finish a book that way. I also enjoy youtube and film and I just can't balance all of them and end up never finishing any books. I love reading and am inspired by your reading but want to be able to finish more of them.

    • @PoorPersonsBookReviewer

      Thanks for thinking of me to answer your question, I consider it the highest compliment. the truth is I’m in a rare position in my life where I don’t work and have no real friends or family obligations to keeps me from reading. To be even more honest If I didn’t set myself high reading goals, I probably wouldn’t be sober and getting into trouble. To answer your question. First I suggest switching to short stories and Novella’s so you can get the feeling of reward finishing something (most books can cut 100p of filler). Second maybe it’s the genre or authors you’re choosing if you’re struggling to finish, don’t listen to other people’s top 10 list. Find what you love. Third and probably the toughest, you’re gonna have to cut down the screen time, no easy way around it. (Physical books are key for that) I hope my advice is helpful. And please don’t feel bad for not reaching your reading goals, You’re still doing better then most ppl even picking up a book and trying . Everyone’s reading journey is different, but they all start off with a single step.

    "The Judge"... 1 of my greatest fears is government authority. No joke when I say this; when I talk about legal obligations (taxes, conscription, vaccines which is a good thing, jury duty etc.) I always tell people that the President orders it to show how serious I am and I use his/her name. So in my country (Indonesia) until October 20th when a new President is sworn in, I say "Jokowi orders it". And when I tell someone not to get in legal trouble I say "You don't want the men in brown (police uniforms) knocking on your door". So in your case, "Biden ordered it" and you had a run in with the "men in blue". Sorry to hear that.

    hi, there. nothing wrong with a week where not much reading was done. that's how life works. like a true bibliophile, though, you still have lots to talk about when it comes to books. ;) i liked the road as well but, then again, i seem to love end of the world or what they call post apocalyptic literature. never got around to blood meridian but boy people do rave about it. i've never seen the movie either. i've got several mccarthy books on my tbr. and so it goes... ha,ha. i love that you are THAT guy in book club. i've got a book club coming up this saturday and we go through the same thing as people go off on tangents. it's part of the charm of book club, right? and, after all, books are about Life with a capital "L" so it's not surprising that it triggers folks' memories about this or that. amirite or amirite? some kid books are pretty freaking awesome which just goes to prove what i always say: a good story is a good story. it doesn't matter it you are not the target audience. as a teacher, i've read quite a few children's books that were amazing. i think i've shared that i love robert cormier's stuff. laurie halse anderson's speak is a modern masterpiece. if you ever see that pick it up. the kids always LOVE it which tells you everything you need to know right there glad you enjoyed far from the madding crowd. that means you can join the club, what club? the club of folks that like books with depressing themes and/or ending. and, yes, the mayor of casterbridge is even better imho. i can't wait to hear what you think of it i see teen titans in your future! ;) alone by poe isn't a masterpiece but, boy, does it do alienation right. the rhyme and rhythm are just perfect for getting across its themes. i think it's pretty cool that you keep reading a poem a week. i'm eager to hear what you will be reading next week i've been sick this week so haven't read as much myself and then work is always interfering with my reading. work! best not to go there. have a great week and until next time.... 🐄🐄🐄

      hi friend ppl do rave about blood meridian so much i feel like im missing out. i also heard there making a new movie of it and i better read it before I unintentionally get a spoiler. your right, book clubs do get emotional and lively sometimes in unexpected ways. The good thing is that those who dont respect other peoples feelings and beliefs also dont read or at least dont last lol ill add Anderson's speak to my watch list. the children's books i have read have really surprised me with how much they get to the core of what it means to be human. much like how the classic fairy tales effects that lizard part of the brain Tom Hardy totally blew me away and i will definitely read more of his Wessex universe. Poe's Alone poem was so on the noise i didnt even feel like i had to look up reviews to see if i missed anything. im really happy I am making time for poetry every week. Sorry you're not feeling well and i hope you feel better. until next time 🐂

    HP Lovecraft is one of my 2 favourite authors! (the other is JRR Tolkien) Both of them have their problems, racism being one of the big ones. But man, they had talent like nobody else. In fact one of the reasons HPL's works evoke such vivid dread, is that his own xenophobia gave him nightmares. In other news, man, I wish I could get down to read at your rates, but life is kicking me hard and I manage only a fraction of what I usually do...

    • @PoorPersonsBookReviewer
      @PoorPersonsBookReviewer 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m a firm believer that the truly racist people are mental ill , I would put HP Lovecraft and Robert E Howard in that category. Tolkien seems more like the kinda racist that if he actually sat down and had a conversation with a “person of color” he would question himself? Just my opinion. But I’m with you, no one can write like they can. Don’t sweat it if you’re not reaching your reading goals, you’re still in the rear category of people who actually read 💪🏽

    hi there, friend. how interesting that you are writing letters because, as you say, no one does these days. you often mention that these video posts of yours are a kind of therapy. writing has often been described as therapeutic. would you agree? locked up in prison? you have a very interesting past, my friend! as you may recall, i was arrested last year for protesting but, luckily, i avoided jail time even though the crazy prosecutor told the news media that he would be seeking jail time. our system is insane! so this reminded me of...the best story about a prisoner: les miserables by victor hugo. have you read that? it's a very long book but so freaking awesome. if you read it, be sure to read the entire thing and not the shortened or abridged version. it's the type of book that should be on everyone's tbr and it should be at the very top of that list. with your background, it might be interesting for your to read it. i would be curious to know your opinion about it based on your own prison experience cuba? boy, this week's video is all kinds of interesting! i don't watch much television as i don't own one and haven't for decades. i manage to see some stuff very occasionally on my computer, especially when my brothers recommend stuff and say i simply have to watch this or that. blowback sounds fascinating because i'm a cuban immigrant who came to the u.s. in the late 1960s. i also lived in cambodia for five years a while back and have visited the actual killing fields there. this show sounds like it's right up my alley. will definitely look into it. thanks for the tip what a nice copy of the lord of the rings! i'm a huge tolkien fan and recently read it again after many years. it held up for me. i hope it does for you too. (btw, the red text block (that's what it's called) with the elven writing is very cool) raymond chandler is indeed a name one hears often. haven't read much by him but there's only so much time, right? i have a bunch of canadian friends who i met when i lived in ukraine years and years ago who recommended the stone diaries to me back then. they raved about it. for whatever reason, i never read it. thanks, as always, for putting it on my radar again robert jodan doing robert e. howard? to be honest, that doesn't appeal to me. i never finished the wheel of time. it just didn't hold my interest and dropped it after three or four books. you are absolutely right that everyone's reading journey is different and it definitely affects us. for me it was reading childhood's end when i was thirteen philip k dick is another writer that has never appealed to me. i have gone back and read another book or story by him again and again over the years but he just doesn't do much for me. recently, though, i've had a kind of paradigm shift with my reading as i'm just disgusted with modern writers and have gone back to read vintage books which i really love. might be time to revisit dick again? i suppose we'll see fairy tales and/or fables? awesome. if done well, those types of stories can be amazing. there's something about those kinds of stories that really taps into our subconscious...or something. not sure what i'm trying to say but a good fairy tale or fable can be very powerful. know what i mean? remember that science fiction was called scientific romance back in the 1800s. i'm just saying ;) h.p. lovecraft? you make it sound interesting but he's another writer that i struggle to like even though folks seems to rave about him. like i always say, though, we like what we like glad you enjoyed the comic. i still maintain that the teen titans from the 1980s were THE best robert frost is awesome. even in such a short poem, there is something deep to contemplate i'm wrong every day! Life has a tendency to humble us. this is not a bad thing, methinks have a great week and until next time.... 🦮🦮🦮

      hi friend sounds like you have a very interesting past as well, Blow back is a podcast sorry for not making that more clear and i think you will love it. im watching less and less tv / TH-cam everyday, so im with you on that. more time for reading Let's see how my family reacts to my letters, it was therapeutic but maybe i got too sentimental without having to look them in the eye? I bought a copy of "les mis" hearing it's one of the greatest of all time but War and Peace comes first and i will read it this year! being in the school to jail pipe line and being homeless did have a big effect in my life whether I like it or not. but one of the good things is that i have a real sympathy for the victims of this fucked up system of ours. I love just love all the original JRRT artwork and red text block in my new LOTR books. its better to be humble for a few min other than being a fool your whole life lol Lovecraft, Jordan, and PKD. how are we even friends, jk. The Stone diary's was so amazing, i also got it recommended to me by a friend. one of those lost gems that needs to be dug out of all the trash thats out now. im so enjoying the science romance of the 1800s, i know what you mean. theres something that taps into your lizard brain when you read them lol I hope you're having a great reading week, im 250p into Tom Hardy's far from the madding crowd, It took a lil time to get used to his writing style but im really enjoying it. I just know hes setting me up for a tragic ending until next time 🐕‍🦺

    🐶 I missed the whole postal letter thing, I'll have to go back. That sounds really cool. I didn't know about that PKD series either, thx. Don't feel bad about having to unhaul, people who read as much as we do have to constantly keep unloading, I don't know how people keep every book they read. I think the vid on books that got you through rough times in jail is a great idea. You got through it.

      @PoorPersonsBookReviewer 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I suggest reading the short stories first before you watch the PKD show they throws in direct lines that you will recognize. I use to think I would read love and keep all the books, that was foolish 🫠. Maybe I’ll just mention a book from time to time that I read from my rough pass, thx for the support 🐶

    hi, there. glad you went back to that dickinson poem. poetry always needs to be revisited. the ideas need to simmer in your head before full understanding arrives. well done! i was curious to know what you thought about that peter heller book. i read his first book the dog stars a few years ago and absolutely loved it. i highly recommend that. however, i read his second book the painter which i thought was garbage so i'm skittish about reading anything else by him. this one sounds like it wasn't too bad. will have to think about it. so many books, so little time after all, right? so happy to hear that you enjoyed the second book in the latro series. as i said before, i read it many, many years ago and liked it. i have the third book but have never gotten around to it. that one might have to be moved to the top of my tbr list because, damn, there's nothing like reading gene wolfe you've reminded me that i've got that alice sheldon biography that i put aside. there's just not enough time to read everything i want! boy, that wesleyan anthology has SO many great stories. will need to see if i can find it when i go hunting next time i read parable of the sower back when it was first published and don't recall much of it. i liked butler especially her xenogenesis series. but maybe the fact that i can't remember much of it tells you all you need to know about it. and, yeah, butler has become all the rage in these woke days wow, that justice league book is quite the doorstop! i can't seem to get into comics these days which surprises me because i was a big fan back in the day. i do like marv wolfman's stuff with george perez, especially the teen titans. gosh, those were lots of fun! oh, that too much coffee comic. i'd forgotten about it. i need to google that and read a few. they sounds really interesting don't forget that you can get books for free at a local library! i always go to my local library and check out books. saves me some money there is nothing like getting an actual letter from someone. it makes their day. do it! good luck with the hardy book let's see if i can find a spear... ⋐▭ι══════ﺤ that wasn't easy! have a good weekend, friend. and happy reading. cheers

      hi friend i did send 2 letters out this week, it wont be a surprise to my mom and sis cause i had to ask them for their address but they were happy just to hear i would. the JLA and all the comic omnibuses can double as a weapon, i even have to change where i read (the kitchen table) but its so worth it, i didnt forget about your teen titan recommendation. theres just so many and once i start buying them ill wanna complete the collection but maybe my local library will have some, ill check it out. i totally understand about wanting to read everything and just not having the time , it was a short story week for me. Im sure ill love Butler's earlier work and maybe all the hype just got my expectations too high. like i said the peter heller book just left me wanting more and filling in the blanks is something i dont mind but it has to be intentional. Speaking of filling in the blanks i dont think i will ever stop thinking about what Latros real story is? Gene Wolfe is the master hands down. very clever with the spear, it doesnt look easy either lol happy reading friend cheers

      I haven’t read it but I do own a copy. I definitely haven’t given up on her and I’ll probably read parable of the talents just to see where the story goes. It may be she just gets so much hype I expect too much, just like with 3 body problems
