There is a o-ring on shift shaft and a retainer easy to get to when apart
I thought they only did the single square headlight for like one year or something i always liked them
I like your video, on reputing everything back in the GM steering column. There is a lot of little pieces all with a different job. You covered all of them .Excellent job. The hardest thing for me to believe is that , GM put a ignition box/ switch, down on the lower column. So that answers that question when I heard other videos talking about (a person), putting his or her, steering column back together, better get that right, or it won't start when your all done! My wife says, after seeing all the stuff, when I was taking it apart said, you'll never get that back together! And I said yeah , it might be a real learning experience , Might take a time or two. But I hope not. don't want to do the same job, 2 or 3 times. That's when I start breaking stuff. lol
@janbill79 Hope the video helps. Good luck getting yours all back together!
Thanks. You should add 4l80e for dummies to title. Thanks again
@cameracamera1319 I just figured it would be helpful for beginners to see the basics and get an idea what it takes. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@thecraftsman72 I think thats the best comment I've gotten yet on this channel! Hahaa....thanks! I guess I try to make videos to show people that anyone can do this stuff. You don't need a good neighbor when you can fix it yourself!

That's a very helpful video. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us out here that are hesitant about tackling a 4L80E rebuild. I would be interested in watching the pump rebuild if you find time to edit that video.

I have a GMC Jimmy with a sway bar. I wonder if crossover drag link will clear the sway bar?
@jeremyc9229 Thats a really good question. I have a sway bar on my TODO list so I guess we'll find out. I'll make sure to post a video when I get to that part.
@@vikingmech thanks! I just bought the Jimmy. It came with a 4” ruff country lift on it. It drove ok, but my wife couldn’t, (or wouldn’t) get in. So, I just installed a Tuff country 2” lift. Tuff Country told me I would be fine using the 4” steering arm that the Rough country kit came with. Anyhow, I have major Bump steer now! Can’t drive over 35mph without my full concentration. Since my Jimmy didn’t come with the stock steering arm, I just ordered one for the fun of it, to see if it works. If not, I am going crossover! Unless the sway bar gets in the way. P.S., I will never be swayed to crossover in any other way! Lol
@@jeremyc9229 Thats an interesting problem. I would have no idea how to fix bump steer on that short-arm setup. There must be some components not traveling up and down in the same arc. It would be much easier to fix on a crossover setup (on the truck!)
@@vikingmech I think I will have to do the crossover steering, I don’t want to waste anymore money on components I don’t need. But still, for my driving, I do like the sway bar. If it has to be removed, so be it.
@@jeremyc9229 I think Offroad Design sells a swaybar kit or at least some brackets to make it fit with a lift kit and crossover steering. I'm going to make it work one way or another once I get to that point.

WHAT is the sleeve for ?
@bryanstroup864 What sleeve are you referring to?
Great video thanks for putting it out there. I noticed you heated up the harmonic balancer. I’ve heard of people using assembly lube on the crank when putting the balancer in place. Did you do that?
@Michael-Homerepair76 Nope I've never used any kind of lube when installing balancers. As long as you have a good install tool they normally go on without any trouble.
Nice! That’s something that I had planned to do on my 85. With a 6 inch lift and 37’s i will need step bars. My plan is to try to make some that will run from wheel well to wheel well with dual fuel tanks. Your video is the first that I have seen that makes it a bolt on setup which is what I want also. Nice job!👍🏻
@slingingsteel9744 Thanks man! Yeah it requires a little welding but overall it was pretty easy. I would think you could make longer ones as you mentioned. Just might need one more support brace in the middle.
@@vikingmech yeah. I don’t think it will be to difficult to do. I haven’t really took to much time yet to figure out how I’m going to do it. I’m a welder and fabricator by trade so I’m not too worried about building it but I always enjoy watching what others come up with too. There is always someone else that comes up with a better idea or I can use a mix of my ideas and others. I’ve been building cars and welding for over 40 years and still learning things
@@slingingsteel9744 Same here. I don't do this for a living but I've always enjoyed welding, fabricating and building cool cars as a hobby. I usually try to make a video when I can't find any others showing the same thing.
'promo sm' 💪
Where did you put the new thrust bearing at 14:49?
@tsimshian886 It goes on the back of the front output shaft. You can see it at 3:50 in the video. On the right hand side.
I just did my first 4l80. When the intermediate shaft goes into the sun gear the lube oil holes have to line up. There’s about a 1 in 50 or so chance these hole will line up if you put the gear in first and then drop in the intermediate shaft. You have to put the 2 together and shine a light in the end to verify alignment. During assembly I noticed its very easy to pull this shaft up and mess up the alignment if a component is pulled back up. The shaft can easily be one spline off.
@kevinboutwell2243 Where did you find that info? Not saying its wrong but I didn't see any mention of that in the ATSG manual or the video classroom series I followed. Would be nice to know if I need to tear my trans all back apart again for that or not. Thanks!
Good question. I just looked in the ATSG book and can’t find anything about it. I had a friend show me that a while back thats done lots of 4l80s along with the bevel going down. I’ve also seen a couple rebuild videos of others that do it all the time and they line them up. I did it because monkey see monkey do principle. I just looked at a spare sun gear and intermediate shaft and the area where the hole lines up with a internal grove in the intermediate shaft. That hole has to be getting oil even when the holes aren’t lined up. My friend is out of the country right now so I can’t ask him. My gut feeling after looking is it doesn’t matter. The only thing i can say is the 2 holes lined up directly might spray oil better? If my buddy ever gets back in town I’ll ask him.
th-cam.com/video/R7JB8Jqcif0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Z4Uc-47GSOuympUA Start watching this video at minute 18. Like you said, the book doesn’t say it and there’s a groove in the intermediate shaft. I’m not sure but mine is definitely lined up.
@@kevinboutwell2243 I did find an answer here (post #105) that says indexing the oil holes is not necessary. A few other random forum posts seem to agree, so I'm thinking its not necessary, hence no mention of it in the book or videos. bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/4l80e-rebuild-on-a-suburban.284668/page-6
@@kevinboutwell2243 Yeah I found that same video with a search, and saw him line up the holes. I think this must be similar to lifters in an engine. They have oiling holes but they don't line up with the oil feed holes in the block and they're in a groove which would be entirely pressurized. So the orientation of the holes doesn't really matter. Thanks for commenting though. Always good for myself and anyone else watching to learn about this stuff!
Purdy nice. Back in the late '80s early '90s I use to twist pipe at a muffler and brake shop. We used bend cards and aluminized steel tubing. Any common small car, like an Escort or Cavalier, or Omni, a cat-back exhaust was $119.00, installed, made on the spot, walk-ins welcome. I got really good at it, real quick. I'm retired now but, this video brought back some of those memories.
@RANDOMNATION907 Sounds like that would be a fun job. Man we don't get much of anything for $119 bucks anymore. I don't mind doing exhaust work, its pretty easy and saves me a lot of cash. Thanks for watching!
Looks good! Nice work!
@slingingsteel9744 Thank you!
Really nice job on that exhaust !
@johnfry9010 Thanks man!
When I did mine, I used a hole saw jus a bit over the size of the center of the new shackle hanger. Put tape around the centering drill bit to fit the size of the bolt hole in the shackle. once that was done, then I removed the rivits. Great though!
Oh another thing was... I put the nut on the inside. If I had not, i would have never be able to get the bolt out as my header and exhaust was in the way.
@tonyvickers8659 Thats a great idea. I never thought of hole-sawing the big hole using the old bushing as a guide. That would have been a LOT easier.
@@tonyvickers8659 I debated which direction to put the bolt through. I decided not to put the grease zerk on the outside because I thought it might get hit by rocks coming off the tires. So I put mine on the inside of the frame and modified my exhaust to make sure it clears the bolt. Thanks for commenting, its a good thing for other viewers to watch out for when doing this install.
The reason why you overdrive planetarium is different because you're working with our earlier 4L80E trans he shows you that on the video I think you're working on a 91 to 01 4L80E trans look at the tag on the passenger side of the trans

Those shackle brackets are on my list. Pretty much all my suspension and steering components are coming from ORD. Most everyone I’ve seen removing those rivets use the punch attachment on the air hammer to drive them out after cutting the ends off. I haven’t done it yet so I’m not sure how well it’s going to work. I sure it will take a powerful air hammer.
@slingingsteel9744 Yeah sometimes the punch works but sometimes they are practically welded in. Thankfully I only had to drill a few of them.
Great video! That’s the only part of a vehicle I’ve never have rebuilt is an automatic transmission. I’ve always said maybe one day I will give it a try. I was initially was going to run a 4L80 in my truck but I’ve pretty much have decided to go with a manual transmission. I’m more of a manual type guy but who knows I may decide one day to go back to an automatic.
@slingingsteel9744 I was the same way and I think a lot of other people have always wanted to rebuild a transmission too, but just thought it was too complicated. Hopefully everyone can see here that its not impossible. I love driving a manual too.
