I just completed the replacement of cab corners on my truck. Wish I would have gad the Flanging / Hole Punch tool. Looks much nicer than mine did. Nice job.
The tighter one can cut replacement sheetmetal such as cab corners will allow for true butt welding all the way around. If you take your time that patch will become one with the original panel, as if it never happened. Ive done miles of sheetmetal repair followed by butt welded mig lines. Ive had a Lincoln square wave tig unit for at least 5 years now and barely touched it. Once the time is right to learn, i plan on sitting down and playing until im comfortable to call myself hobbist grade TIG. I dont think its a stretch that most people reading this desire to feel similar about their welding aspirations in one mans own garage. I bet every single person here watching this vid and reading comments are at a similar level and desire to be just good enough to get it done and enjoy the results and say we "did it" ourselves. I know my own personal strengths and weaknesses as do all of you I'm sure. If we all aspired to be top notch welders we would have chose that path years ago. One big exception here could be the relatively young man or woman who may actually aspire to weld like a machine and are young enough to achieve such results! The fact that cab corner patch panels even exist for the most popular older trucks just goes to show how important any old truck is and the materials to bring them back to former glory and beyond! Its sunday evening as i write this and the "pep talk" is for myself as much as anybody reading! LORD knows we can all use a boost in confidence and ability. This is only the second vid of this channel i have viewed and you are getting my subscription friend. Im 54 years old and on disability. It started in 2018 when i started going blind. Later was an MS diagnosis, of which my wife suffers much more than i do with this silly disease. Too many years of just trying to bring home a living as an equipment and forklift mechanic, among many other jobs before that seemingly has brought on heart disease, mild stroke, stupid high blood pressure... Ok enough complaining, just trying to paint a picture. Just the last 3 months here in Detroit has been enough to set me off...ive had the local government sieze vehicles because of getting flat out ripped off in a real estate deal selling my old house to the loss of friends and family when GOD has called their names and wants them with HIM instead of staying on this earth a little longer... We all get knocked down but even the Bible says we gotta pick ourselves up, knock off the dirt and get back on that horse. If any of y'all need a short ladder or a little push to get back on that horse just reach out and ill push with all this old body has left in it..but you gonna have to want it too. After 50 plus years, some men like me develop this weird habit of rambling in some comment section somewhere on youtube. Im caught! Y'all found me! LoL. Again, this little channel here is a hit with me and looking forward to whatever you have to share in the future! To everybody, we all need to just keep on keeping on. Sounds corny but when my pastor said it, i figured it was ok to repeat such words. Wishing everyone who reads this the very best today and always..

Only thing I would add is I tend to like to replace cab corners with the doors hung. For a driver it doesn’t really matter all that much, but if one isn’t careful you can get the bottom of the cab corners off a mile making the lower back of the doors ‘stick out’ and there’s no amount of adjusting you can do to make it right without cutting the cab corner back off and fixing it. I may or may not have put my danged fool self in that situation a couple times because I’ve done paint and body over 20 years and my ego got the best of me lol.
The only issue with lapping this joint is that you introduce a seem on the backside of the panel for water to get into and start the rust process, you would at minimum want to seem seal the backside of that lap joint and spray some cavity wax to ensure a moisture proof repair otherwise it looks great
Thanks, and you're right. I normally only lap weld areas that I can reach from the backside for that reason. Luckily squarebodies have an open hole inside the cab that allows access to that area.
@JLMiller410 The cab has an opening on the inside, so you can reach down and spread seam sealer, or spray epoxy primer in there. I'm going to be cutting out and replacing the inner cab corners, so I'll have access that way.
good job but to be definitively efficient, you should put grease everywhere. grease et the only thing very efficient against rust. put grease between metal and carpet, inside door, behind bumper, behind (inside the car), behind the repairs you can make (everywhere inside this door - hidden erea - instead of using paint), hollow areas (necessarily hidden, so no need to be aesthetic). For rear wings unreachable with a paintbrush, use an extender and poor old oil everywhere each year.Handyman Experience - 35 years. From france

So do you weld it on the inside as well? Or maybe coat the inside along the weld with seam sealer?
