The Railroading Problem
Dungeons and Dragons Discussions - Railroading!
Railroading is when the Dungeon Master/Game Master throws character/player autonomy to the side in favor of furthering their story. It takes away from a lot of the fun that D&D should be. But as we look deeper into this issue, we begin to find some great ways in which we can improve our games and our STORIES!

    Huh, fair points and opinions, have to say DnD is such a interesting thing, especially when it’s adapted into a different Medium, Say do you know of any of the Pokémon DnDs that can be found on TH-cam? Anyway, I have asked this in a previous Comment, but I don’t know if you noticed it, so just to make sure, How has things gone with Gildedguy? Are you done or do you still have some left?

    It’s just the simple fact that orihime which I love is a pretty simple shonen love interest where she shows interest and affection for ichigo that’s pretty one sided where ichigo cares for her and definitely is close with her his dynamic and connection to Rukia was more fleshed out more like a shojo couple they had more chemistry emotional connection and development as a paring not to mention the banter and how much they hang out how Kubo fleshes out scenes with them one on one if writers always do this and it’s kinda annoying I’m fine with Rukia just being a friend lord knows we need more character pairings of platonic friendship the issue is when that pairing is more interesting fleshed out equal and entertaining than your main love interest dynamic especially since it’s canon now I don’t have an issue with ichihime at all but yeah ichiruki forever ☀️ 🌙

      Very well put! I would be just fine with Ichihime in the long run if Kubo had given Orihime more character development, but especially if he had just evolved their relationship more. All the care and chemistry went to Ichigo and Rukia. And the results are definitely something that other creators and writers should learn from!

      @@camillesharemkubo did developed orihime the whole series, she started as a dependant girl weak and insecure of herself until she grew strong and secure of herself to know her role, all that care and chemistry that you said went to ichigo and rukia was treated as platonic, the result is that if creators want to make platonic relationships they can do it if they still make sure which characters are supposed to be the end game and thats what kubo did.

    That's horrible, storytelling is supposed to make you think. If it's controversial or dated, okay, good that's a conversation, if they aren't there is some date, time and place where it would be, and stories are power, access to new perspectives, that's why I love old dated books, because they have such different takes.

    It's really a bummer what they did to the Numenoreans. There was a time when I was excited about this show and thought how cool it would be to see how they handle the Numenoreans in comparison to the regular humans. I eventually realized everyone on here is just a human in different clothing

      I'm even fine with them being slightly smaller on screen, really. I mean, camera perspective goes a long way to make short people seem tall, but whatever. I wanted to see the majesty, the nobility, and the awe of Numenor and its people. Not even the wide shots in season 1 captured that. The city looked old and decaying. It was a relic of a deteriorating past. The show runners wanted Greek-inspired Gondor rather than medieval, magical Atlantis. Or even non-decaying Gondor if they just want to continue ripping off Jackson's trilogy... It's sad to see how this show that had so much potential ended up.

    Kubo did what so many mangaka do, Orihime = Masaki and Ichigo = Isshin to just loop back around and "correct history" so that their kid will have the childhood they were denied. And you know in the end the kid will end up another "chosen one". IshiHime NEVER made sense beyond fanservice, and it would've been nice to see her with Ishida or Ulquiorra (better character play off and development in those ships- I mean the fics are like sagas). As for Renji- who I absolutely fangirl over- he needed A LOT more maturation! I honestly didn't see him with anybody in the end, and hoped he would be leading his own squad in the Gotei 13 (do I acknowledge he loved Rukia, yes, but I also think Byaukya would've been a speed bump since he does take his relationship with his adopted sister very seriously).

    The showrunners are seriously untalented and not qualified for the job despite the support of good scoring and visual handling. Nothing can make up for lack of talent in storycraft. Honestly, if they simply kept the Elven look from Tolkien- the straight hair and fair-folk look, it would somehow be bearable because at least it bridges itself to what was established. They decided they knew better and hence we are left with an unwatchable soggy turd.

    • @camillesharem
      @camillesharem วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's sad to know that this is the result of them working for 12 years in the industry, plus supposedly working on their own stories since high school. That is longer than I have been writing, and yet I have nine books to show for it and most of them are objectively better written than this show... It comes down to their hubris. they thought they could match or exceed Tolkien and do it with barely a fraction of the effort he put into his own stories. Have they ever really edited any of their own works before? Have they ever seriously taken criticism and outside opinions before? Have they ever tried to write something that was hard for them, outside of their wheelhouse? I unfortunately don't see any of the recognizable hallmarks of someone who is earnestly trying to improve their craft, as opposed to someone like JRR Tolkien! So yeah, there's nothing in this show that can save it from the bad writing that permeates the plot, the characters, and the dialogue. The visuals can only take them so far.

    Probably a controversial opinion: I think this show was doomed from the start by trying to make Sauron/Annatar a character and focusing on him. Even if they did had good writers and all the rights to make a faithful adaptation of the 2nd age. Imo, what made Sauron so iconic and terrifying is neither the heroes nor readers get to see him up close and in person in the LOTR. Even in the Silmarillion, there's barely much about his backstory and his crimes during the 1st Age. I think this works because Sauron represents the Satanic archetype, and when you try to make him an actual character instead of a sinister force of evil, you will inevitably diminish him. Think of how good horror movies don't show the monster until the very end. I think of Sauron that way. The horror and dread comes from what we DON'T see him do, but only hear about in hushed whispers. He's a character best left off page and off screen for most of the time. I think this could have been rectified by focusing on the haradrim and easterlings and how their lives have been affected by sauron, and how some of them try to resist his tyranny with the help of the blue wizards. We know Tolkien was inspired by Asian and African countries for the East and South, and there's a plethora of real world history and mythology to use as inspiration for incredible new stories in middle earth.

    • @camillesharem
      @camillesharem 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You make an excellent point. Sauron is this ultimate, nigh-unstoppable evil. What we do get of his backstory from Tolkien makes him tragic because he is essentially a fallen angel. But that would require them to really dig deep before the First Age. Sauron is very active and present throughout the Second Age, so any show set during that time would have him as a big player. I think what would have worked well would have been to have Annatar be there almost from the get-go, and make him super likable. Meanwhile have Mordor and Sauron active, and misdirect the normies who don't know any better and the fans can wait with bated breath from the inevitable betrayal. That is still enjoyable! And then you have the haunt of knowing that something awful is coming. After that, focus solely on the heroes while Sauron looms over everything as the big bad causing chaos and destruction. The show really missed out on an opportunity with season 1 to show us all the different kingdoms of men and dwarves, so we could get to know them and feel bad for them when they succumb to Annatar's temptations. But at this rate? We don't know who these people are and we won't feel bad for them getting tricked.

      @camillesharem 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I heard some great commentary last night that said if this show leaned into being cheesy and had a Hercules or Xena, Warrior Princess kind of opening and vibe, that far more people would love it. I might push back on that claim a little, but really, a few good tweaks and this would be a hilarious melodramatic parody! It was also sad when gathering clips for this video. It's clear that the production and makeup crews have been having fun. The work that went into the barrow wights is impressive! And it's all lost because the lighting is terrible and cinematography is just so choppy and awful... Compare that to the love that went into crafting the LOTR sets and costumes, and how the lighting and camera work praise all that effort. The contrast is stark! And that's to say nothing of the writing, or the acting, or the direction, or the plot in general...

      To paraphrase an excellent comment, "This burden must be borne, even all the way to Mount Doom." Rings of Power lost over 60% of its audience during the first season. According to current analytics, it lost half of its remaining audience before episode 4 premiered. The tens of millions of views season 1, episode 1 received has been knocked down to the same numbers as popular indie shows here on TH-cam. And even with the controversies surrounding something like Murder Drones' finale, I guarantee you that Murder Drones is getting more positive buzz than Rings of Power. Now, why do I keep watching, reviewing, and analyzing? Because if I don't watch it or if I just hate it, I actually support all the bad writing that Hollywood insists is a masterpiece. It is not. And these videos, where I even review it as its own original story and provide creative feedback and writing advice, are designed to highlight that Hollywood is wrong. Furthermore, it is clear that you either didn't watch my video through or pay attention, because you would hear my praise for ROP where is succeeds and does well, and where it does adhere to Tolkien's canon. Which again, most other reviewers don't do! But Rings of Power can no longer hide behind supposed tens of millions of views. It's not getting those any more. And if that is what people want to argue, then we have to accept before the whole world that a silly show like The Amazing Digital Circus is more popular than anything any other studio is doing, including Rings of Power, and is making more money than most of Hollywood right now. And that is a public fact!

All of which were done on a smaller budget, with better writing, and actually made their creators money. And while 11 million official views is impressive, that is an 89% reduction from the show's premiere. If you lost 89% of your audience, that is devastating. A stand-up comedian who loses 89% of their audience just bombed. If 89% of Disney park visitors left and didn't come back, the company would start flirting with bankruptcy. If Game of Thrones had lost 89% of its paying audience on HBO from season 1 to season 2, the show would not have made it to the Red Wedding. 11 million is an impressive number all by itself. When put into context, Amazon would never celebrate that. Especially after all their bragging from season 1. This then begs the question: Why did 89% of the paying audience abandon the series?

Your romantic partner SHOULD feel like your best friend, but even more so. Ichigo doesn’t have that with Orihime. He notices things about her, and she notices things about him but they never quite connect, and that’s honestly so sad. Ichigo and Orihime’s romantic arcs are both weirdly one-sided since they’re never in a position where they share their feelings in a reciprocal way, which is an important facet of depicting mutual love. Like I understand Orihime loves Ichigo, and I can see times where Ichigo notices Orihime or thinks she’s kind of cute, but their relationship isn’t deep or profound on a spiritual self-actualized level And I get it, in the end, male shounen writers just kind of suck at romance. They don’t know how to do it and tends to just default to separating the protag and love interest specifically so they don’t have to actually write it. But the ending consequence is that the protagonist ends up with deep heart rending relationships with their best friends, mentors, rivals, and villains, and at best a passable fairly shallow relationship with their main love interest, even though the love interest should arguably have one of if not the most profound relationship with the protagonist. But the Entwives gave their minds to the lesser trees, and to the meads in the sunshine beyond the feet of the forests; and they saw the sloe in the thicket, and the wild apple and the cherry blossoming in spring, and the green herbs in the waterlands in summer, and the seeding grasses in the autumn fields.... So the Entwives made gardens to live in. But we Ents went on wandering, and we only came to the gardens now and again... Then when the Darkness came in the North, the Entwives crossed the Great River, and made new gardens, and tilled new fields, and we saw them more seldom." Thank you for correcting me and my assumptions! I followed that quote back into the Two Towers. Yes, Morgoth's return prompted a greater separation and Sauron's destruction of the Entwive's gardens drove them further out of the Brown Lands. So 'Old Man Ironwood' could very well be a leftover of those times. But that's the kind of thing that had the writers really made their version of Tom Bombadil dive into that, some cool connections to the Ents and highlighting Sauron's evil would have made those scenes carry real weight and punch, both narratively and lore-wise. I let my mind run wild with the details relayed by Sam about one of his neighbors seeing a tree get up and walk just at the borders of the Shire, and the Old Forest very obviously having a connection to the old Ent gardens. It would be nice to think that some Entwives might have made their way in the direction of the Shire, but that is a mystery likely known only to Tolkien himself.

And the NUzi scenes are always the best 💜💛 l'm glad these dorks are finally dating, we've been waiting for 3 yrs for them to be together and it's worth it. Khan & Nori reuniting was very funny and cute. We finally got to see how terryfying Cyn is, like she is just too OP but also creepily cute. She's honestly one of the best parts in this finale and definitely stole the show. Although it's sad V can't be with N, however we can clearly see in the classroom she is sharing earphones with Lizzy and Lizzy leaned into V to see what's inside the paper plane. There's also one shot of just the four of them with N&Uzi dancing in the sky and V & Lizzy dinositting and playing chess, kinda like a double date. Every end credits shot, they are always seen doing together so I think it's implied that they're a thing. So in a way, V does find happiness. But one of the things l love about this ep is we finally got to learn more about J as a character and her motivation though sadly we do not see how her arc has concluded just like all the other side characters. If you didn't like it, that's fine. But I never realistically expected to get anything more Absolute Solver, its origins, or its motivations. That's antithetical to a Lovecraftian horror story. People fear what they don't understand, and we are never meant to understand the eldritch gods and their natures. Would I have loved to get more? Sure! And it should have been longer. And as far as we can tell with Cyn, the first she wanted was to not be alone. That was what invited Absolute Solver in. It then twisted and warped her personality and motivations as it inhabited her, taking those desires to not be alone and not wanting to be disposed of, transforming them into the desire to kill others and perversely keep around the people closest to her thanks to Absolute Solver's own desire to consume everything. Like any good Lovecraftian story the lore is in the observation. Now, I can totally understand where people feel that the rest of the cast got done dirty because they were not given much time at all or a real chance to shine and culminate their character arcs. And those feelings are absolutely justified.

      @@onabs7107 Normally, yes. What makes a good villain is its character, encompassing its personality, history, motivations, relationships, etc. But because this is a Lovecraftian horror, those rules can be thrown out the window. Liam played fast and loose with those parameters by giving Absolute Solver an amalgamated personality that developed with the people it consumed, which in turn made loads of people either like Cyn or really want that runt to get squashed. He did what Lovecraft would never have done and made an eldritch entity personable. Now then, going that far creates the expectations that we would get more of her character. But because Liam was always developing this story as a Lovecraftian tale, the monster CANNOT be explained. That removes its mystique which is essential to the fear it induces in the cast and audience. So the debate that does open up is was Liam wrong to make Absolute Solver an entity that could have feelings and personality or was it the right move. Because you could say that the end (when she is in the locker) is a nightmare that she has when she is sleeping, and is like the solver slowly consuming her. If you think about it is not that different as ending three because at the end she is like very slowly dying, and that is also similar to be in a comma, or is just a snapshot of what is happening to her internally. Murder drones was a very interesting journey. I feel that the other episodes have also general flaws. Sometimes the pacing is too fast, sometimes you need more character moments etc….
