    The incredible Journey was one of my favorite movies as a kid. We listened to the book on audio last year and the book is completely different. My Friend Flicka is probably a little too graphic with some of the realities of ranch life but the movie cleans that up and remains fairly true. One character in the movie is not in the book.

    My oldest son read most of Wild Robot in one sitting, he then read it again to his brother. We took both our boys and a few other 7/8 year olds to see the movie. Beast Online has three different modes. 1) You can lock the problems and chapters up and he has to solves them to open more up. 2)You can unlock all the levels and paths, so he can answer as many question as he likes. 3) I can't recall. Their grading system is scaled on a 1 star (you are proficient) and 2 stars (you have mastered it) and three being the best. If he does all the problems without errors, he gets three stars. Most 2. Some 1 star. But it really doesn't matter. They have end of chapter tests where you get to see what level out of three they are at. They only require kids to get 1 star to open the next level (if in that mode.) If I was you, I'd just require 1 star to move on the next concept/chapter.

    You repeatedly say you don't like busy work overall. I don't like it either. My preference is to read, write, discuss and draw with basic school materials with my kid. When it is time for a hands-on activity, I just want the kit, with everything in it, please don't make me go shopping every week. But I understand neurodivergent kids thrive with multisensory activities. Do you do any of that with history or even science? Because I see that as busy work but I am trying just to see if it increase retention in long-term memory...

    • @HomeschoolShoppingChannel
      @HomeschoolShoppingChannel หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! My preference is the same: Reading, discussion and drawing. I actually do not really do any science experiments. But by listening to me (picture books, science curricula) or their educational books on Yoto or even TH-cam videos (when I used to let them watch TH-cam, I do not usually now) they seem to glean a lot. I use the binder method (I can explain in another video if you need), I take the important info we read and create picture sheets in Canva, print it off and we review it. At least once a week. This is enough for their long term memory to catch it. That is without any experiments or multisensory activities. For history, learning through stories works best (picture books) and I use the same method if I feel it's required. I am a lazy homeschooler. And truthfully I loathe experiments. Messy, materials I need to find, and they still don't seem to work out particularly well. I do not have a talent for them. History museums and such work well with my oldest but the youngest loathes museums so stories and discussion it is. :)

      @@HomeschoolShoppingChannel thank you for sharing your experience. I am starting first grade with my kid, and I decided to dive deep in the sciences this year. But turns out my kid doesn't retain anything right after I read it (I ask him questions, and he says I dont know but somehow he does better with Bookshark's last year). His reading comprehension is stronger with read-alouds. So I coincidentally just started doing the kind of review sheets you are talking about, with pictures. I remember a TH-camr said she uses a curriculum with memory statements, and I want that for my kid. But I don't like the memory poems that come with Elemental Science - my one takeaway from RightStart Math... is anything that is put into a song doesn't help my kid learn a thing. I totally understand how hard it is to even get to the experiments. I don't know why they are just hard to get started, but you're right, it is the fear of the prepping and the mess after it is all over, and telling the kid we are all done for the day (and him saying "nooooo"). I already got enough to clean with the toddler making a mess all the time and the regular kid drama of the day. 😂

    With the right brain phonics you said you need the flash cards (the set of 40?) and the one book?
