I heard from an OT that large motor skills are needed before they can do fine motor skills such as handwriting. When my son was preschool age he wasn't ready to write, but he loved to cut things with scissors so that worked the fine motor.
He spent a lot of time running and jumping, etc. and drawing on his own. Now he can write, but it's still slow. His attention span is so much better at age 8.
He used to refuse to do certain workbooks daily, but then would do a bunch of pages in one sitting. This was fine for preschool and kindergarten, but now he can tolerate daily work much better.
