----------------------------------------------
Born in Lebanon to a Lebanese father and a French mother, Henri Goraieb had a dual Lebanese-French culture. At only 13 years old, he performed for the first time Edward Grieg's Concerto in A minor. Later he went to Paris where he obtained the ``Diplôme d’Etudes pour le Piano`` at the age of 18 from ``Conservatoire National de Musique`` with the highest distinction. Then he obtained the temperament of a concert pianist in Paris while training with great pedagogues, like Germaine Mounier and Marguerite Long. Finally, it was with the Russian pianist Oleg Ivanov, a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, that he was able to combine his profound musicality with the legendary Russian piano technique.
Henri Goraieb who played more than 70 concertos, was a soloist with many prestigious orchestras and has given numerous concerts and recitals in major European capitals and cities. Two tours in Russia were greeted triumphantly. In Europe, India, and various Middle Eastern countries, the press unanimously hailed the performances of this great pianist.
With his love and profound knowledge of the opera, Henri Goraieb animated for almost 20 years (the 1980s to 1990s) many programs broadcasted on the French National Radio “France Musique”; notably his weekly programs devoted to lyrical art named “Voix souvenirs”, and “Premières Loges” with the most prestigious voices of the time.

    Wow such an amazing work! I myself am not an expert but through my common sense and humble opinion, I allow myself to say that for me as a Lebanese, this work not only technically marries classical music composition and Levantine songs, but it much more importantly really conveys a certain Lebanese/Levantine modern spirit. To avoid falling into generalizations about the Lebanese/Levantine culture and to be precise, maybe this thing I'm calling "Levantine modern spirit" dates back to the musical/cultural heritage the Rahbanis and other prominent musicians and composers of the 50's of the last century left us. This work is way impressing than many more recent attempts of fusing classical music and Lebanese music.

    In this recording (Radio Munich, 1963), Henri Goraieb gives a brilliant interpretation of Chopin’s Introduction and Variations on the German Air "Der Schweizerbub", often referred to as 'Variations sur un Air National Allemand', in 1826/27. It was first published in 1851, two years after Chopin's death.

    even if you don't love the musical material, you kind of have to respect, nay, stan mr. djabadary for the sheer audacity. plus it has some really cool moments! had he workshopped this with a couple different pianists he could have come up with a more polished result, but instead we get the historical relic of a piano concerto that's fun to listen to both in spite of and because of its jankiness. and for that i am grateful. it's not every day that you hear a large work by a fine composer that contains some major L passages.

    This is actually a quite lovely piece of what the British call "light music" and the Americans call "middle-of-the-road." It reminds me a great deal of Albert W. Ketèlbey, a British composer from around the same time (1875-1959) who similarly got savaged by overly "serious" music critics for not writing at the level of Mozart, Beethoven or Wagner.

    • @debojoychanda72
      @debojoychanda72 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ketelbey's music is very sweet. Yes, it may not be very original and certainly will not provide returning dividends, but it fed the musical imagination of a pianist of Clifford Curzon's stature.

    It’s unfair to say this as the “worst piano concerto ever written”

  • @randomaccountaaa
    @randomaccountaaa ปีที่แล้ว

    For me, I won't say it's the worst piano concerto. There are some memorable melodies, and while the first movement may feel clunky and the second movement has nothing memorable at all (again, for me), the 2nd half of the third movement is fine, and some parts of the first movement are good too. There are plenty of concertos which only just wasted time, nothing memorable, not even enjoyable. Here, this concerto I can listen to every now and then, this concerto I can enjoy, maybe not one of my favourites, but it certainly stuck out, partly because of it's reputation of being deemed as "the worst piano concerto". Also, it seems that someone has written an English Wikipedia article for this composer, which is great, although it does not seem to mention Hurwitz's criticism of the concerto, which is probably the biggest reason why this composer is getting any attention at all. If I remember too, I will add it myself. I have done some research of the composer some time ago, of which I remember very little. However, he wrote 3 concertos, and after a quick check, Chotha Djabadary (a sibling of Heraclius) made a 2 piano reduction of the 2nd concerto (in F major), published it in France in 1976 (?). From my memory, I think I checked through worldcat, and saw only the 1st and 2nd concerto being held in some university libraries, the 2nd being in 2 piano reduction form. Interestingly from this quick research, I found this: www.google.ca/books/edition/Life_Streams/8jpfaEkcAHoC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=heraclius+djabadary&pg=PA262&printsec=frontcover which seems to be some guide for meditation? Uh, do what you will with that information LMAO

    Very nice smooth and stable voice and nice color. It just needs a bit more "operatic ring". Listen to Cornell Macneil in his glory days for that ring. It's not necessary to change eu and e to â. it's not that high, and we want to make it as "French" as possible. Don't loosen the jaw too much in performance. On the other hand, your ou (ex. sourire, nous) is too tight and we don't hear it, so make it a bit ô/â. Not because they are high, it's just intrinsic to that vowel. Short notes: "TES yeux", "REvoir", "LE ciel": slow them down, do a rit on tes, re, le, even if it's not written. Work it out with the pianist, it's not anti-musical, they do it even in baroque and classical opera. Even "ton souriRE et dans tes yeux", stretch the re a bit, take a quick but comfortable breath, the pianist will wait for you for an extra half beat, it's not "illegal". This is one of the reasons LL said "don't sacrifice the song on the altar of breath". Listen to José Van Dam, Ernest Blanc, Jean Borthayre, Gabriel Bacquier for this particular aria.

      Don't finish in a praying hand position. MOTIVATION: The high priest does not implore any mortal, only gods. You're talking to your daughter, she's theoretically in your arms, and you're talking about religious duties & godly interventions rather than emotions. As you know, you think she's sad and angry about the stranger, but she's just in love with him and scared of being discovered, you're so controlling and obsessed with your "job" that you don't take the time to look at her as a father.

    In all honesty, it is terribly difficult to write a "good" piano concerto, not to mention a great one. Liszt had probably the most extensive piano technique of anyone in history. Yet his piano concertos are mostly sophomoric. His own Piano Sonata is a truly great work, not his piano concertos. Difficulty does not equate to a masterwork. The Grieg Piano Concerto is still truly a masterpiece and loved by hundreds of millions (Yes, I play it). It is his best work. So rather than criticize this work, I will simply say that it is not a masterpiece, and it is unfair to attack it because it is not. There are only a small handful of truly great ones. Rach 2,3. Beethoven #4, Brahms #2. Mozart's, Gershwin F, Barber, Prokofiev #2,3 and a few more. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

      Trying to find some sort of cohesiveness in the comment, who really talked about virtuosity being an element of greatness of a Concerto in first place on order for you to argue against it? By the way, it's quite bizarre that you dismiss concertos like Liszt's 2nd as immature and technique-based, when the piano part not only isn't extroverted in the fashion of a typical Concerto, but is almost fully integrated in the orchestra. In other words, you pretty much reproduced this good old thoughtless cliche of Liszt just composing virtuostic empty music. There isn't really anything sophomoric about two concertos with a radical approach in musical form (without acknowledging them as masterpieces). For someone who doesn't criticise a Concerto for not being a masterpiece, you've kind of diverged from your way. As you claim you've played Grieg's PC, I guess you might be aware of its casual pianistic awkwardness - especially in the 2nd movement, with not few over-written passages. Piano writing that is pianistic is necessary for a concerto's success, as avoiding anachronistic and unbalanced polystylism is too (the case with H. Dj.).

      @@TheModicaLisztYeah! Seeing people trashing Liszt even in the Mozart-Camel concerto is both frustrating and hilarious, quite frankly. Alas, in the field of “classical music”, many people don’t bother evaluating pieces based on their own merits or the composers’ intention. For an artistic field that honestly is needy in terms of prestige and being highly considered, there’s a huge chunk of people that base their views on hyper-romanticised & horribly dated gossipy narratives. (Needed to get it of my chest).
