Astorga, Spain. Winter Camino January 2nd, 2024. Epsom salt bathes and getting seranaded.
If you watch any of this video, I recommend watching the last two minutes. It’s pretty cool. It’s when I get serenaded.
This Camino almost ended before it started. I explained why I have to do the abbreviated version of my Camino in the video but for those who do not want to watch, I don’t blame you. I hurt myself falling off the top bunk in Madrid, and was concerned I would not be able to walk. I’m better now after a long soak in the bath.

    Hey Rob, hows it going and happy 2024.It's been a few month since your last posting. Have you been resting up in Alaska and getting back to the mend. Have you been watching the new crop of 2024 PCT hikers taking off from Campo this spring. This is my spectator sport...at least until, one day...I get out there. Weathers been consistently hot then cold with some rain/snow every weeks or so, but not sustained like it was 2023.

      Hey Trex! I’m doing great in Skagway. I am almost fully mended from my last trip to Spain and I am watching some of the hikers. But, I haven’t been able to fully keep up with them. The weather has been crazy for them. That’s really tough because you’re second guessing all your gear. One day it’s perfect the next day it is not. Once I’m done with all my new job training up here I’ll be able to sit down and pick out a few PCTer’s to truly follow.

      @@purplewindpct Hey Rob, good to hear you are back in Skagway and getting up to speed with work. You still in the EMT practice. So, here's few favorites of this years PCT 2024 youtube channels: -Hiking Dancer -Lil chap Hikes(he's partners with Hiking Dancer) These 2 did AT together and post almost daily. 15 mile/day hikers who give "very detailed" accounts of their adventure. Hiking dancer is not afraid to give opinions and probably only AT hiker who honestly explained how AT is a sequence of shelters, roads, and if you get in trouble a quick "get out". Nothing like PCT where you could die(exposure, dehydration, getting lost or falling). Top "commercial" hiking youtubers Dixie and Darwin give zero useful information on the difference between AT and PCT. -Sadie & Zag -Focht on Foot These two are just fun to watch hiking couples that are 15 mile day avg hikers recording great scenery and experience. -The Heard Hiker My longshot favorite that is "off trail" at the moment recovering at relatives in Arizona. Not my favorite in the beginning a bit too "gabby" and mentions the AT every 10 minutes. Then he got ditched by his starting hiking partner 2 weeks in. Obvious reasons. A 20 mile/day hiker and a 10 mi/day don't stay together very long. Then he got dehydration and heat stroke trying to react Paradise Valley Cafe, but some hikers saved him with their water. He had 6 miles to go and moving 1 mile/hour with only 1 liter left. Then he flip flopped to Warner Springs, but stopped at a medical clinic and stayed there a bit. Definitely, was serious, but his spirits are up and he's my underdog favorite, now.

    Taking a portable speaker is a really rude thing to do on Camino. It’s intrusive and selfish and totally against the spirit of the Camino. Leave it at home

    • @purplewindpct
      @purplewindpct ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s rude and intrusive when you play it like people play them from Sarria on. I said you’re alone 90% of the time and that’s when I play the speaker 99% of the time. I don’t keep it on when walking up on people or vis versa. I have never had someone complain when I asked if I can play music while we’re taking a break. I’m an adult that’s not rude and intrusive and I know how to behave around adults. Also, take your ‘high and mighty’ altitude somewhere else and don’t tell people how to do their Camino. The spirit of the Camino is letting people do their Camino’s their way. My Camino your Camino!

I really enjoyed the Valcarlos route. The Pilgrim Office warned us NOT to take the trail between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles as it was muddy and been raining. So yes, a LOT of road walking. I hope to go back this Fall and walk the entire Camino this time. We only walked about 218 miles. Can't wait to return and will go solo this time :)

      Hey, how's it going? Tbh, I'm in my mid fifties with a lot of sports injuries to my knees and ankles. I have a very bad shoulder that is even giving me trouble on this trail. I love backpacking and don't want to give it up. But, I spent almost a year rehabbing what the PCT did to my shoulder in 2021. I just don't think I the body to do it anymore? All that bring said, this Camino is basically a giant shake down hike for a possible PCT attempt starting in April. Yes, I have a permit. 🙂 There’s already schedule issues with the PCT, though. I’m getting major dental dental work done in May and will be off trail for at least 3 weeks for that. So, its 50/50 if I'll even start the PCT and I'm totally fine with that. I'll never stop doing these Camino's. They're 90% fun, 10% struggle. Whereas the PCT is 50/50 at best.

      @@purplewindpct Alright Rob, 2023 PCT on schedule. We've been getting lots of rain here in Southern California. Means there might be plenty of water through the desert sections so minimal water carry would be good news to PCT hikers. Maybe, no 6 liter=15 lbs water carries. Right. Also, I'm going to ignore your comment about being in the mid-fifties and your body breaking down. It's still working and got plenty left!!

      @@purplewindpct Cool. So, you will do a section of the PCT the year. I hope those AT hikers don't get complacent. The first two hundred miles of desert and then 10,000 ft of alpine condition San Jacinto is like a one-two knockout punch. It's an ultralight hikers nightmare, and humbles many 20+ miles/day hikers. The 6 liter water carry, ice-axe, microspikes, heavy quilt/sleeping pads, trail umbrella, tent that won't condensate, tent that won't shred in 50 mph winds, video gear...etc. It's gonna be exciting.

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@purplewindpct From watching these hikers(in my comfy/lazy room), I'm learning that there's 2 types of ultralighters: a.) Just hikers who just enjoy "buying" latest gear. b.) Then you have "speed hikers", who are really semi-trail runners. Speed hiking with 20+ lbs on your back, going down hill, wearing flimsy trail shoes, and finally catching toes/stumbling when extremely exhausted. Even worse, trying to do that in altitude with your feet wet/frozen/numb is asking for trouble. Some might even entertain the idea that the faster/harder they go, the more energy=heat will be created thus not need warm clothing. Yes, that works if you are an olympic caliber marathon runner in tank tops in 40F weather, but he/she is done in a little over 2 hours. Rest of us can't do that. Anyways, I am enjoying finding new submissions and "picking" my all star trail team. Hey I remember you last year you got out of the gates pretty quick. Do you remember those consecutive early rain days in the desert. Do you keep in touch with Johnny Utah. Keep on.

You described a group of ultralighters that I met after they went over San Jacinto. To a man it was one one the worst experience's they have had. And, it was just cold with snow on the ground. I am curious how many people are going to maintain their vlog as they hike the PCT? It is not easy or fun editing in your tent, carrying extra batteries, worried about getting 'content', not letting viewers down with bad or no videos, etc? It was a lot easier when I camped alone, there was no distractions. Most of the time you camp with people and enjoy your time with them. The last thing you want to do is edit a video for a couple of hours before you sleep. lol

    You must be from Alaska. 70 is like, perfect! As for finding a trail family, maybe travel isn’t yet back to pre-pandemic levels. The wooden floors in that palace are amazing.

    You are crazy amazing. ;) Hope to hike with you someday… ok or at least meet you. I live near Yosemite, spent a bunch of time in Ketchikan, Delta Junction and the middle of nowhere AK.
