P.W. Rob May, you were my "lead-off" PCT hiker for 2021!!!! You came out of the Campo with such a flurry. Rain, mud and condensation through the desert. Brand new backpack. Brand new tent. A brisk 3 mile jog back for your trekking poles. Search and destroy mission in Palm springs/San diego for an ice axe. Rental car and Joshua Tree tour for you and Johnny Utah and dropping her off at ontario airport. The two weeks of "super rehab" to get back on the trail. And now!!! Say it ain't so!!! So back to the Alaskan panhandle town of Skagway, it is then? Hmmm....there's a nice chunk of B.C. Canada between you and the 49 states. Looks about 2000 miles. How about a future south bound trip?
You were one of my lead off and best commenters! Lol I miss the trail so much! It's hard to even be on here right now. I went to watch people's videos, but I don't at the same time. On Monday I'll explain everything in more detail why I'll be staying in Skagway. I was about to go to the post office to mail a resupply box Monday morning when everything changed. I won't stop with the videos, though. I'll be making plenty of mistakes in Alaska.
As for the south bound, there's just no way to resupply. And, that's some pretty serious terrain. I actually know people who have rode bicycles down, but no one who's walked it?🤔
Sometimes it's difficult to accept change. Especially when it's not what you expected. Hang in there good things are to come you will heal and when you're ready you can come back out on trail.
Was wondering how you were doing. Sad to hear your PCT hike ends here but really looking forward to your Alaska videos. I was in Juneau years ago and was astounded by the beauty. Happy trails! I'm still nursing my pre-trail injury so it's still unclear what my adventure will look like. It was fun watching your antics on trail and I'm sure it will continue in Alaska! Purple Wind flies North! 🌻
You should let you injury completely heal so you and your husband can go hike in Skagway! My antics will continue in Skagway! 🙂 Only with bears, trout, otters, whales and things.
Yessss, I love Skagway! I only visited one time from an excursion on a cruiseship but I always thought how I would LOVE to go back and visit sometime. Good luck Rob! One door closes another opens?
I'm absolutely gutted 😢 lol... Will you attempt next year? That is the PCT in a nutshell, all the prep in the world just goes out the window. I'll look forward to seeing Skagway, I've always wanted to see Alaska, Denali National Park is on my to do list. Speedy recovery and my best wishes 🙏
Thank you! You're absolutely right about all the prep out the window. But, I'm hoping I can do a month at the end of the season??? I'll be doing videos of my hikes in Alaska, pretend I'm on the PCT. LOL
Well that's a bummer about the PCT. Although, I'm pretty excited to see Alaska. I've been wanting to go there for a while. Yesterday I even started pricing a trip. I've set up nothing nor have I even created a plan. But I'm getting an idea of cost now which is a decent first step. I love Alaska. Can't wait to see it.
Rob, my wife and I will be in Skagway next year (2022) on May 11 and again on May 17. Would love to meet up with you, buy you a beer, and have some PCT conversations. We are both veterans of the PCT, original members of the Pacific Crest Trail Club (now the PCTA), and were Trail Angels out of San Diego for 15 years. Now retired in Maui, we are hiking all of Oregon this coming August and will be doing an Alaskan Cruise next year. Let me know. Cheers! Larry
