@@patandfrankie Thank you for your kind reply. After 25 years of living on a sailboat, I've noticed what are the upgrades that save money and matter to everyday life in the sea. I am a scientist and engineer, and in old times was not easy to work from the boat. Today Starling technology solves this problem and I can enjoy long time passages and extraordinary destinations. New sailors, are often overdue with the equipment and sacrifice tons of money in the name of safety. I am a gadget guy and I love to have the latest equipment. (some of them are still in the box after two years 😅) I have changed 3 sailboats until I find the one that meets my needs, and this is my biggest mistake of losing money. I rushed to get sailboats that were not suitable for my type of sailing. On sailboats world size matters so today I own a 2012 Bavaria 50 and I am happy with the capabilities, performance and layout of this particular sailboat. The only thing that can drive you away from this lovely lifestyle is the boat running costs. I choose to invest in equipment that reduces running costs. My No. 1 investment was energy production and storage. (I paid twice for this task until realised that quality equipment "Lithium Batteries" are much better when they last longer). The No. 2 investment was about food storage and a capable water maker. More fridges longer time to isolated places, fewer visits to expensive tourist destination supermarkets. The No. 3 investment was to replace all the inlets and outlets below the water with high-quality plastic ones. This saves me a ton of money because I need to replace them every 6 years not every 2 years. I stop paying for all those cleaning products. White cleaning vinegar and a soft brush are the best for maintaining and cleaning almost everything in the boat. I can see you invest in parts. You can not imagine how much money you save with this investment. By sailing the South Hemisphere and seeking Volvo engine parts is an expensive sport. Boats have several electric motors, so try to keep some brushes for the alternator and other motors around the boat. A second water pressure pump in the box must be on board too. What we heard yes - and the recommendations at the moment say, that you should use the engine as fast as you can, especially when they attacked you. But for us it is very difficult to say what is right or wrong. 😞

There are undoubtedly several problems caused by mankind, for this case although the latest research has shown that it is a playful behavior the Orcas are showing.

@@patandfrankie did they ask the Orcas? Or, is that the human perspective?

That’s what we read in different studies. Sadly we are not able to ask them. That would be great.

Thank you very much! Our experience showed us, that the first step is the most difficult one and then everything comes step by step. You still need stamina and it will work ☺️ So be courageous and you will see everything will work and there is always a new way or a solution. We wish you that your dreams come true 😉

A good question that we asked ourselves again and again afterwards. We tried to combine the recommendations available to us. In hindsight, we would probably have been better off choosing the route in the 20m zone along the Moroccan coast or sailing higher up the Spanish mainland (or even Portugal).

@@patandfrankie I realize hindsight comments are always easy. I think the two alternatives you mentioned are both better, but again, it's a done deal, and could have been worse.👴😉

Thats true 😉 also what we know is that the Orcas move with the Tunas and depending on the season they relocate along the coast. So for anyone else planning this trip it’s maybe also a tip to check where the hotspot has moved to .. 😌

Yeah, we were talking about it before what we would do if it would happen but we really didn’t think that it would .. 😟 we agree, it’s not a the most relaxed sailing area (at least for us) currently

@@patandfrankie They’ve tried a few times with my Jeanneau 64, it’s an expensive boat. Cherry bombs are what high school American kids throw down toilets it makes a load concussive sound and shock wave and scares them off. It doesn’t hurt them but the sensation is unfamiliar enough that they scarper. Always carry a pack when going through orca grounds all the stress disappears and then it’s fun to see them again as your not worried about your safety or damage. Happy sailing ⛵️

Thanks Colin for your words! The behavior of the orcas is mysterious but we also think that it is a playful encounter. This makes us a bit sad as the topic is shining a bad light on these animals .. It is scary and worrying and hopefully the orcas will loose interest in boats soon. So true what you are saying - we loved to be able to learn from Frank being on his boat and it was a lot of fun! 😊 And making a new friend was also special!

We think the best option is to avoid the area if it is possible and to stay in the 20m zone.

That’s true - it is just an example to visualize as we could not take any footage during the night.

@@patandfrankie These orcas are not from there, they appeared during the first wave of COVID, with an adult orca washed ashore in northern Portugal, dead with deep cuts, since then orcas have been travelling up and down the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, they don't know how to return home.
