Hello and welcome to my channel. I have worked in change management for over 25 years in the private, non-profit, public, and academic sectors. This channel will focus on strategies for getting and staying organized, interesting technologies, and leadership topics.
Supernote Manta & OneNote: No Thank you!
In this short video, we directly address a subscriber question about Microsoft OneNote on the @supernote_official Manta. It is important to note that many apps are not optimized for e-paper devices and this experience may be common on many of them. Either way, this is a hard pass for me.

Supernote A5X2: Unsolicited Marketing Advice
How is the typing experience with a Bluetooth keyboard on the new Manta? 2 weeks ago you did a video about the old A5X and its typing experience.
This is kind of perfect timing for this question. I just worked on the Manta last night and it was pretty much the same experience except that the auto rotate wasn't working in Word. The keyboard shortcuts are still not working and inconsistent. The latency and connection was almost identical to the A5X. Supernote is aware of the software issues and working to fix in a future update. So, in short it works, but still has a way to go. I hope this helps.
Great comparison!
I would have never thought about adding a dust cover. 😮 Supernote is so precise!
I agree. I do think they need something, maybe an insert to replace the dust cover for those who don't want to use the half folio. Right now, the pogo pins and holes are exposed if you take it off.
I rather watch an instructional video than to read it. ❤
@@EInkUnplugged thanks, I don't do a ton of videos like this, usually try to focus on workflow and organization, but since I was exploring the device, I thought why not? Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for this! Really helpful. Not sure if you know anyone who has sideloaded Logos Bible app. It’s a bit chunky but it is my preferred Bible reading and research app
I always found onenote to be wayyy too unfocused and bloated. It does have amazing search functionality, tho
I like the unfocused part, kind of why I like the links I Supernote and using Obsidian. No argument on bloating and search functionality in OneNote.
Looks like software issue on that specific device.
I would agree except that I have seen it that way demonstrated by others on multiple e-ink devices. Both Boox and BigMe work around it by basically showing you a preview of the strokes and then thy render after the fact in OneNote. It's similar to how the reMarkable Paper Pro does color strokes.
Hi, thanks for the detailed demonstration. One reason I was hesitant to buy android based ereaders is that most android apps are unoptimized for eink. For example, around 4:08, there's a noticeable stutter when turning pages caused by the sliding animation. I found this rather distracting with my ereader that I stopped using the Kindle app on it. I think Boox devices can work around the animation stutter by changing the animation filtering setting. Is there a similar option for the supernote as well? I would like an e ink tablet to write on, but my primary use case would be reading and annotating.
Thanks for the comment and question. Yes, it does have a stutter in the Kindle app, sometimes even when you turn the animation off. A way around it I found was touch page turns instead of swiping. I will try to show it sometime. Kobo and Nook seem to work much better from that perspective. Also,. There are none of those issues with EPUBs and PDFs in the native reader.

Looks like some kind of time warp... _'I see dinosaurs floating next to men in space suits!'_
Yeah, not a great experience. The best I've seen it was on Boox. Kit showed it there and even then it wasn't great, except for viewing.
@@Change-1820 In a way I'm pleased the Supernote is pretty much locked-down... I used to scorn the _'being focussed thing',_ but now I'm kinda getting it.
@@karlmunford7000 I would have to agree with them being limited but the sideloading thing was appreciated. I do think eventuality adding e-ink optimized reader apps in their own app store makes sense. I like that I have to be intentional about what I choose to install.
How well does it avoid e-ink ghosting and e-ink’s generally sluggish feel? For background I’ve been using Sony, then Kobo and now Pocketbook e-readers for many years and they’re great for displaying static book pages but trying to be interactive with them is quite frustrating.
Thanks for the comment and question. I have only had it a few days, but there is some issue with ghosting. This was also the case with the A6X2 Nomad, it might have something to do with the increased PPI from 227-300 because my original A5X does not have the issue as much. Again, i will need to spend more time with it. The good news is that the touch interface is snappy (for an e-ink display) and can be easily refreshed with the swipe of the sidebar. There are devices that are much cleaner and more responsive (Boox comes to mind), but their special technology drains the battery much faster. Once I have had time to work with it for a while, I will do a more in-depth review. I hope this helps. Thanks again!
@ they’ve changed to a newer Carta panel so maybe there are some driver updates needed. I don’t think I’d mind the reduced battery life with BSR. But I don’t like Boox’s attitude to customers and poorly finished/translated software.
This is incredible information! Thank you so much. Does anyone know if there is any type of PDF that lists and explains these many features on the Supernote? This detailed explanation is so useful, but I'd also like to have it in a readable text form.
Thanks for the comment. Most of them are in the users manual, but not all of them. Some of it was just discovery on my part because I use the device every day. I am thinking about maybe creating a low cost masterclass on using the device or maybe a series of blog articles or pages.
So there’s no software updates going out with the A5x2? It’s just the new hardware !!!
@@KarlHenrySanon There have been several recent software updates in conjunction with the release. However, it's part of their philosophy to reduce e-waste and planned odsolescense.
I’m planning on ordering one to replace my broken Go 10.3. I really hope a few updates in the todo app, à better e-reader app and a big revamp of the Companion app. I really hope the Companion app to be on par with the Remarkable mobile and desktop app. That was my biggest complain about the Boox. Their boox assistant app is a crappy unusable one. By the way, you’re the one convincing me to give the Supernote a try with your reviews and guides. Thank you !!
How do you Compare it to the remarkable pro in terms of taking notes and PDF editing, these are the features I need the most. Love to be able to sync to one note or Evernote and/or others. What do you think. I also want tinge able to load planners.
@@sugarkingfpl I would recommend @KitBetts-Masters, @MyDeepGuide, and @jeffreymoss for direct comparisons, but they are not out yet. I know most about the Supernote as a productivity tool and have done some videos on planners with it. I can't compare to reMarkable because I have never owned one.
yeah, without e-ink optimization it (and lots of other apps like it) are unusable not only on Supernote but on every other platform imo. I hope Ratta explores how they might be able to do the same kind of optimization Boox does. I have a suspicion it might be easier for them, if it is that could open a *lot* of doors. even though I personally don't like OneNote, some people's employers would let OneNote connect to corporate resources while nothing else can so there's still a value add.
@@0xKruzr agreed!
No color ?
Nope, it was never supposed to have color, which I prefer.
One Note is horrible anyhow. I'd never use it.
Thanks for the perspective and the comment. I was a big fan when I was embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem and before my first e-ink tablet. Now, I find that I am much more independent of a lot of those types of tools.
Thank you for this. It is good to know.
I'm not saying it won't ever get there, but for me the frustration would be just too much. I think the way that Supernote handles handwriting recognition and all of the other tools just makes it such a premium experience. OneNote is great, just not worth the tradeoffs for me.
Very hard to tell via camera. I'm on the fence if it's worth getting it over my A5X for my use case. Work notes mostly n some Kindle reading
This is what I will be exploring over the next few weeks. The addition of other reader apps is the biggest benefit I can see and the clarity is definitely better. However, I have used my A5X for years with no issues. A lot will depend on whether you feel you need a replacement and might be willing to part with your A5X (resale value is decent) to offset the cost. Even then, a lot depends on how well your A5X currently functions. I want to weigh all of that. Thanks for the comment.
2:37 the A5 X2 display is only a few mm larger in each dimension, so that wouldn’t make such a big difference. Pretty sure it’s the line height that’s configured differently. The lines on your A5 X2 are much more vertically dense than on your A5 X here. I don’t have my Manta yet, but I guess you can configure that, right? If they are set to the same line height, there shouldn’t be too much of a difference left.
Thank you for the comment. I tried to set them identical, but it is possible there were some differences. If you look at it in full HD, you can definitely see a difference in the clarity. You may be very well be right about line spacing or how it was interpreted between the two different app versions. The Manta supports a newer version of the Kindle app, I believe. One thing that is important here is that I have only had the device 4 days. so I am kind of sharing experiences in real-time. In a week or so, I am going to release a video on whether going from the A5X to the A5X2 is worth the upgrade. Having used the A5X2 for 3.5 years, I think that is a good comparison to make. Thanks again for the response.
Thank you for the video but i have to agree with rants for tech it s still very limited . For example there no way to adjust the text to read from right to left and thts a big issue for example for arabic readers , as well there s no option for indent and hyphens . And i find the fact tht u can not change the settings after annotating a bit annoying becoz u get stuck with whatever u originaly choose
Thanks for these critiques. My contention here wasn't that it was the best reader on the market, but only that it was much better than originally discussed. I would send these as suggestions through the Supernote feedback or on Reddit. They do pay attention. I'm not sure what you mean by indent, but if you are talking about margin control, that is there, just not after you add the annotations. However, if you use the digest feature and not directly writing on the page, you can reformat at any time. No matter what device you use, there will always be tradeoffs. A lot depends on your use case and individual needs. For me, I will take simplicity and functionality over an overly complicated app any day. Thanks again for the comment.
@ Thank you for all your work and useful videos. I will surely send a feedback . Arabic has been a problematic issue in most eink reader/tablet only my boox had the option but u re right with boox they overdid it with all the options they are great and very useful but i do find myself tinkinring with the options a lot. I might end up using my A6x2 for noting and sketching and keep my Na3 for reading and the other apps 🙏🏼
Thanks for video. when you get your backup installed with your 2000+ files/documents/notes - please show us the amount of used space of the 32g that is still open.
I will, it's not even half way full after. 5 years (and there are EPUBs and PDFs on there for reading too.
So cool! Love that it can be removed and replaced. They need to start providing the module components. They still are not selling the motherboard and batteries…
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. There was a good post about this by hex2asc on Reddit. They are working on it. Partially, it is about how to securely ship the batteries since they will not be in a device.
Thanks for the video! Appreciate any and all tips! 👍🏻
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful. I was just playing around and thought I'd throw out something quick.
“I’m not gonna lie, I am not disliking this pen at all.” Your words don’t match your excitement for the pen. And if you keep saying “I’m not gonna lie,” it makes me wonder if you’re lying when you don’t say that. They’re just awkward, needless words you should omit. Also, solid video, but super slow. It was even a little slow at 1.25x speed. But I understand slow and deliberate is your style. Keep up the good, informative work!
Thanks for the comment and constructive feedback. I'm not sure there's much I can do about saying "not gonna lie." it's a coloquial term I've used since I was a kid (part of my quasi-southern heritage). At almost 51, not sure I can break it. On speed, you should hear it before I edit out the pauses😂. All kidding aside, Iam working on that. My cadence naturally changes when I'm talking to a blank screen. Thanks again for the comment.
can you export your highlighted text? Example: I highlighted a few paragraphs on my pdf, after finish reading the article can i export those highlighted paragraphs so i can have them on their own on a separated document or note or google doc? thanks
This is a great question and shows the versatility of the platform. The can't be exported separately as "highlights," but if you do them as an "annotation," you can export the.m as a separate PDF from the digest. What's cool about that is that if you add a note to the digest entry, it comes along with it. I hope this helps.
@ it does help, thanks
Hi Ed, does the A5X2 package come with dust covers for the holes used to snap on the half folio?
Unfortunately, that was wishlist item for me and a suggestion to them. As of now, they are exposed if you don't use the cover.
I’m not sure this video was necessary? But you never know, maybe someone would get confused?
Thanks for the feedback, I was fiddling around and testing things. Maybe someone will find it useful to see how easy it is Thanks again.

Thanks for the great video!!
@@entry_line Thank you, that means a lot. Exciting times.
@@Change-1820 definitely! I can finally comment on the Manta lol
@entry_line At least I had a much shorter wait. 😂
Does this have OneNote support?
You can technically sideload OneNote, but I've not seen a good experience. I might try and see how it works.
Sweet! Thanks for showing it to us so early on. Mine has been ordered here in Germany, but hasn’t yet shipped. Can‘t wait to finally try a Supernote! Recently bought - and immediately returned - a Remarkable Paper Pro. I think the Supernote will serve me much better.
@@scottbecker3485 I hope you will love the Supernote, I still love my A5X.
Curious why the Remarkable was not doing it for you? I'm super interested in the A5X2 but RMPP is also a contender for me.
@ Well, the RMPP supposedly had/has a „frontlight“, but it was waaaaayyy too dim to do the job. I have a Kindle Scribe, and its frontlight is perfect for reading or notetaking without a lamp, or in bed (with the kids sleeping near me). I can see everything fine, and can set the light as high or low as needed (in whatever color temperature I prefer). The RMMP barely lit up at all! Really awful. 2nd issue: I thought I wanted color, but discovered that the flashing of the screen after every bit of color writing or shading was extremely annoying. So now I‘ve decided if I can‘t have color (without resorting to something like the Note Air 4C, which I dislike because all Boox devices are way too complicated in terms of UI) and if I still keep my Scribe for nighttime reading or quick jotting down of things so I don‘t forget them the next day, then I might as well get the best device with no frontlight layer to detract from the daytime writing experience, and with no color (since the technology just isn‘t good enough for my taste yet). 3rd reason: The Supernote‘s streamlined UI really appeals to me more than that of any other device currently out there, for notetaking, planning, journaling, etc. It seems much better thought out and distraction-free, and also more intuitive in many ways. Sure, a Boox device like the Go 10.3 (otherwise brilliant) offers a ton more features, but I hate digging for things and having to backtrack through a bunch of levels to get to what I want. I guess I‘m a „less is more“ kinda guy, now. Just looking for a crisp and versatile writing/reading experience for daytime use. I think the Supernote is the more well-engineered of the two products (compared with RMPP). Remarkable has a lot going for it, but my feeling is that they chose to go with a color tech that is just too frustrating to use, and threw in a so-called „frontlight“ in a halfhearted way, thus missing the mark.
@@scottbecker3485 Thanks for sharing! I hope the Supernote does the trick for you!
I believe that you can close the folio while syncing.
@@guynoise9513 I found that out after the fact, but thanks for reminding me.
@@Change-1820my pleasure!
Does it have infinite canvas for mind mapping _à la dr. Justin Sung_ ?
@@TheInternetFan yes it can open EPUBs and has quite a few tools available. There is no infinite scrolls but the Atelier drawing app is good for mind mapping and has an adjustable canvas size of 50-150 percent.

Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry to hear this and hope they get it sorted out. I have seen a lot of issues online with the EU reseller. It's a shame if they continue to get in the way.
Thank you for the video. I already had the Nomad (A6X2). Is it worth upgrading to Manta given that Nomad is a bit small when I try to write. Thank you for your advice.
Thanks for the comment and question. I would say yes if the size is the most important issue. For me, the A6X2 was just too small so I went back to the A5X. The Manta is very similar to the A6X2, but you will definitely notice the extra canvas size.
@ Tks Ed. I also want to know the writing experience on Nomad vs Manta. Is there a difference? If yes, which is better in your opinion?
@hianhwee the writing experience is great on both. I have a little of a head start here because I installed FeelWrite 2 on my A5X. The slight give of the flexible screen just makes it feel more like a pen on a pad of paper. If you like that feel, the Manta is going to be better. If you prefer a single sheet of paper on a desk, the Nomad is more true to that feel.
@ Tks Ed. Singapore stock is sold out and I have to wait for the next batch to be available to get my hands on them.
Hi Ed, did you consider Boox Go 6 as a device which allows reading from Kobo, Kindle etc?
Thanks for the comment and question. I did consider it but at the time the Wave was $99 and a deal I couldn't pass up. Also, the Wave was just about the same size as rhe Nomad so a little larger screen.
Ahhh! 😧 why bother partnering with Lamy if there is no side button? I use the side button all the time.
My guess would be that they wanted something unique and the All-Star already exists. For me, it's not a big issue, but I definitely know it is for others.
Thanks for the video. Ordered mine about 2 hours ago and surprised to see an unboxing video up already. Nice to see a sneak peak at what i'm about to get. My first e-ink device. I ordered mine with the HOM2 pen. I know Lamy is a popular brand, but it looked to be plastic, therefore light weight, and of course no button. So, for the same price (cheaper with Eternal), I chose the HOM2 pen. Like you, I think I'll appreciate the heavier pen that's made out of metal rather than a plastic pen that probably has the same nib anyway. Can't wait to get mine! Can't wait for you to do a little more in depth review of the software itself. Although I could probably watch A6X2 videos for that.
Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective. Yeah, I love HOM pens. The LAMY is very nice but the same price as the Samauri. I'm OK without the buttons because I like the gestures. Check out my content on the A6X2 and the A5X, the all run the same software.
I didn’t see a major difference in contrast between the two. Is there a noticeable difference in person? The lighter background/screen is what I was mostly interested in.
This is a great question and I was mainly unboxing here. You can definitely tell the difference but it isn't eath shattering. Everything just pops a little more and has cleaner lines.
Thank you for this!
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel.
