In this video we will take my vintage Tamiya Hilux Monster Racer from shelf queen to side-yard race truck! This was the first R/C kit I ever built so this project is very special to me. Everything from it's animated handling to the sound of the gearbox brings me back to Christmas of '89. It was my first "hobby grade" R/C car and I couldn't believe the difference from the other 'toy' R/C cars I ...

Thank you to all of the people who have subscribed, liked and viewed the channel! If you're like me, you'll never forget your first RC cars and even the ones you could never afford as a kid! I don't claim to be an expert on all of these models, just a passionate collector who looks to pass on some insight about the facts I do know and what to look for if you have been wanting to finally own one...

    Where did you get this because I think this might have been mine when I was little...at least most of it. The remote is the same, the charger is the same, radio is the same, my mom used to keep paperwork in file folders just like that. My brother had a Tekin speed control... I remember my dad putting the screw in the back you speak of. I even remember the stains on the box... Someone cleaned it up. My brother had a Futaba radio for his Ultima II (might be where that manual came from). I suspect someone else had it after me and did some things to the car itself. But it has every signature of mine...

      @@flexor212000 Hello, I bought this from a friend that works in a hobby shop in the suburban Detroit, Michigan area.

      @@vintagerctour5302 Ok thanks. Well I'm not anywhere close to that area but it's just so strange. That combination of charger, remote, car, and the file folders my mom used are the same. She would always keep our manuals and papers like that. Also the box! The Futaba remote my brother had so that explains the manual being in there. I'm just surprised. I'm on the West Coast so it's just weird. I guess I can't be 100% but it's just uncanny.

  • @Davivd2
    @Davivd2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow all these years later and Losi LXT kits still have the same problems that I had with my conversion kit that I bought back in 94 as a kid. I converted my JRX 2 into an LXT and the kit was supposed to come with everything needed to convert any JRX 2 or Pro. I had to stop assembly a few different times and head back to the hobby store to buy the parts that were not there. The rear bulkhead was not in the kit at all and the JRX bulkhead would not line up with the chassis or even be usable if it could. The turnbuckle links for the camber and toe in/out linkages were not there and the ones from the JRX were not long enough to facilitate the longer swing arms.The axle's for the front and rear were not in the kit and I also had to get a longer telescopic drive shaft to mate up with the pieces that came out of the transmission because the older ones connected to the JRX axle's were not long enough.

    Damn, y' know or should I say you don't know or wouldn't know obviously how you present yourself as a nice cool RC geek but you messed it up when you said the words flip and then got snobby about the condition of the box alone even before you opened it, most of us would be damn proud to have a piece of it in any condition, I soon got the impression that your just one of them snobby geeks.

    A few memories - back in the 80's we matched our batteries... a lost art. Then companies started matching them when they learned how important it was. When the RC10 came along, offroad racing really picked up and matched NiCads were a big deal. We used the Reedy motors for modified racing and usually a handout motor for stock class. Then for pan cars we used wintergreen oil for traction compound. Eventually companies started canning it for resale, (I used Trinity because it was a little better than food grade wintergreen oil).... you always knew a guy who raced carpet because his stuff always smelled like wintergreen.... Do you remember when "radial" tires came out? (capped tires - TRC brand) .. They even had stagger... remember tire stagger in the pre radial days of NASCAR? ...they originally only had a band around the tread area, then they became a foam tire fully wrapped in a rubber compound... green dot, red dot, yellow dot to indicate the softness of the rubber... they seemed to cost a lot back then and wore out quick, but if you wanted to race on the concrete and asphalt ovals you had to have them.... that was when NASCAR was HUGE !!.. it's nothing nowadays compared to the Dale Earnhardt - Bill Elliot era !! I wish it would come back, but I think the management of NASCAR has ruined it ! I would love to race RC on those oval like we did back then, that was so much fun ... like Lake Whipoorwill in FL and Dalton Raceway in GA and the Thunderdrome in CA....Jasper Superspeedway in TN .. there were some great ones back then !!

    • @vintagerctour5302
      @vintagerctour5302 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Yeah you go WAY back in the hobby! The most on-road I did back then was a little carpet 1/12 racing. I had a Corally SP12. I can smell Paragon traction compound just by talking about it!! Great story man! Thanks for watching!

    • @jaywill530
      @jaywill530 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vintagerctour5302 I started as young teen in 1978 with my much older brother. I had a 1/8 on road nitro AE pan car then. We lived in AZ. My first offroader was a Tamiya Champ... it sucked actually. When I was sent to Sand Diego for extended Joint Force Exercises with the Navy, I was AF, we got held up with torrential rain and decided to go watch an RC offroad race near Miramar marine base that we were using for our base for the exercises. The RC10 was brand new and I just made 1st leuy so I decided to blow my raise on one...$300 + for everything I needed .. that was quite a chunk of change back then !! I spent all night building it so I could race it then the rain stopped and we had to fly !! DANG !! but over the next few years I had the chance to race it quite a bit and also an RC10L pan car ... I had the wide for road course and the narrow for oval. I have been all over the country because of my AF job. I always managed to find a way to bring it with me when we were on exercises if I would be somewhere that was hosting a race.
