Whatever the issue was yes this happened to me multiple times and it confounded me until I actually returned to office and used a 1080p monitor and the problem instantly went away. Was the most infuriating thing to deal with because I was spinning docker containers and k8 clusters. As soon as I would start to do any work, the system would often hang with incredibly high cpu usage.

I also came here for an answer to the Ultrawide question, everything I've read says that all we need to search for is Pixel Density per Inch (PPI) of the display to be 109 to 110 approximately. Ultrawides, are almost the same size as the 27 in vertically, but much larger horizontally so it does not affect PPI as much and still matches 109 PPI needed for proper Ui rendering in MacOs, so ultrawides are good. Still, scaled 1440p Ui might be too small for some, so you could opt for 2 options. Use the Better Display app, to scale to 1440p native resolution, at the cost of performance (not noticeable unless you do video editing) or Go for a 4k 32 in. The real state in your screen will be the same as a 1080p screen but with much better image quality, specially when consuming media, videos, photos, etc... Note: Understand this issue in general only affects how the User Interface renders, not the media content you watch.

Why not get a 5k Monitor? This works really nice with Macs. Options like the Studio Display or the Samsung S9 should be reasonable solutions - certainly better than a 1440p monitor .....

This video is still useful but I'd like to address one detail: On Apple Silicon Macs like M1 onwards, the added GPU pressure is not very significant, just roughly 1-2% or so. The PROBLEM is that Macs nowadays share RAM with the GPU for performance ("Unified Memory"). And with a higher resolution, your GPU will need a larger so called pixel buffer. These consume RAM. On a 1440p monitor, the WindowsServer process on your Mac might consume 300 MB or so. On a 4K monitor where it downscales to 1440p, it'll maybe consume 1.5 GB because it's trying to run 5K behind the scene, a huge ramp up in RAM usage. If you're sitting with a 8 GB standard config it'll have a serious impact. It might even be a little painful on a 16 GB setup depending on use case. After all, 10% RAM lost. On a 4K monitor that downscaled to 1080p, maybe 1 GB, so a bit better because it only needs to upscale to 4K first. So... If you're doing 3D rendering stuff and right on the cusp of your Mac starting swap, this lost gigabyte may bring you over the edge and I think this can have a worse effect than the GPU overhead that should not be very significant nowadays.

I have a Mac mini. With a 1440p monitor should I set my resolution at 1440p or 1080p if I want the least impact to my GPU?

Great video. It's important to empathize, that the problem is not using a 4K display on a Mac, but the OS on the Mac. It's not fine tuned for "normal" resolutions, like 1440P and 4K. And for one reason, and one reason alone; To sell more Apple displays to their customers. You just cannot distinguish a 4K vs 5K display, at normal viewing distance.

Sooo, let me get this. For video content a 27" 1440p monitor will work great and help the GPU to get more idle, less power and great effort? For coding a 27" 4K will destroy your eyes? For coding a 32" 4K will do just fine but the M1 Pro will use more energy because of resolution? I'm using a 2K monitor 32" but I'm thinking on buying either one 32" 4K or two 27" 4K, so I should buy a 1440 for better equilibrium? And which 1440? 2K (work) or 3440 (gaming mostly ultrawide options)?

My understanding is test what works for you. Personally for me 2k seem a bit small and I prefer larger that mean I might have to scale it to fhd. Twist here is that 2k monitor to scale fhd is relatively similar problem you face with 4k scaled to 2k considering with 2k scaling has half the pixels in comparison to 4k. For 1080 scaling 4k will be excellent.

I find the standard font size on MacOS too small. That's why I use 4k 27 inch at Default (with no scaling) because it increase the font size. I am probably in the minority but its valid to say the default 1080p is the best size for me.

Which one should I go for? 27'' desktop with 1440p or 4K? I don't need 32" monitor and want only 27". Please advice, thanks!

8:28 How is 27" 1440p lower than 24" 1080p? The former gives you 108,79 ppi and the latter is 91,79 ppi.

tbh this is so damn frustrating and I cannot understand how a company like apple makes it so user-unfriendly...I have to assume almost everyone with macbooks runs into that problem and even explaining this problem to someone is sooo complex, even though this video does a good job at that. I have to use a 1280x720 resolution already scaled up with betterdisplay because otherwise i would even have to assign a lower resolution to get HiDPI...working with blender in such a resolution is great. not. obviously. rant over.

I am using a 40" with upscaled "unnative" 6.~ish GPU-resolution on a 5K display to show a kind of 1440p interface with a macbook pro on an intel CPU and I don't feel its lagging. I can hear the fans when watching youtube but I feel this has always been the case with Intel cpus? Where would I realise that this is not good or lagging?

Not positive, but I think the comment at 11:48 about scaling on the monitor about running at lower-than-native resolution isn't saying you can change the native resolution, or that there isn't scaling involved at all, but rather that the scaling happens on the monitor rather than on your computer. Displays have built in scaling so that a device can send a, say, 1080p signal to a 4k display, and it can still display it using the entire monitor, rather than having a small image in the center with black boxes on all sides. Display scaling _tends_ to be worse than GPU (/CPU, if the device has integrated graphics) scaling, but it does mean that it doesn't have a performance cost to the computer. I think whether this is a viable resolution really depends on the monitor. Some high end monitors have great display scaling, to the point you might even prefer it to the mac scaling, but I don't know whether your 4k monitor was one of them.
