Mastering UX
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 13 ธ.ค. 2021
I began my design journey in 2000 as a web designer. Then in 2011, my career shifted from Web Design to UX Design. There was an "Aha" moment I had, when I realized wireframes, user testing, iterations, interviews etc. delivered value by helping me discovering failing points far before we went live. This channel is dedicated to cover UX design, research, strategy, design and process tools as well the practical learnings from having practiced digital design for over 22 years.

Why Cognitive Load Matters for UX Designers
In the realm of UX design, cognitive load is not just a buzzword; it's a critical factor that can make or break the user experience. From John Sweller's research in the 1980s to modern-day studies on website usability, the evidence is clear: minimizing cognitive load is essential for creating efficient, accessible, and satisfying digital experiences. While it's easy to overlook subtle factors like load times or text complexity, these elements can cumulatively contribute to a mentally taxing experience, leading to user drop-off.

Prioritizing Features with Personas
มุมมอง 315ปีที่แล้ว
One of the reasons that personas can fail is that they can be perceived as impractical, often regarded as only a nice-to-have asset, and are often poorly applied to projects. Well today, I will share with you this UX method (that I’ve used in consulting) which can make personas extremely practical, integral to the projects that you are on, and very rich in application. So stay tuned as we cover...

The Design Thinking Name Explained
มุมมอง 605ปีที่แล้ว
One thing I like to do when facilitating a design thinking workshop is to let the audience know that they shouldn’t be intimidated by the word “design” in design thinking. Design thinking. The Essence of the Double Diamond
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
Many have seen the Double Diamond depicted with sequential markers that say Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. Although these markers are not incorrect, they may give the impression that the Double Diamond must be followed as a strict, linear process - a methodical series of planned steps. However, the essense of the Double Diamond is much more fluid and explorative. In this episode we’ll ...

UX Labels.. More Important than You Think.
มุมมอง 253ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome video! Just a suggestion-try dropping the long channel intro around 0:30. Instead, add something short and catchy that brands your channel and makes it more fun! Using more visual effects to explain what you're talking about could also help keep it engaging. Love your speaking style and structure- and you’ve got a new follower here! <3
Thank you for this video. There is an option in VSCODE to support SASS by setting filenames and their output-destinations in the LiveSass-extension. Open the VSCODE-settings and look for the liveSassCompile-section (created when installing LiveSass). Add output-formats like so: "liveSassCompile.settings.formats": [ { "format": "expanded", "extensionName": ".css", "savePath": "/src/assets/css" } ] This saves the SASS-output to the project-subfolder '/src/assets/css'. The index.html is in the project-folder. Add a format-definition for any file-type you like to have from SASS (.map etc.). There are examples available on the Internet for supported file-formats. Peace.
This is so helpful, Ken. I really appreciate how accessible and applicable your videos are. As Einstein said, "You don't really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother." You, sir, clearly do understand it. As a senior designer, this is a really helpful reminder for me to keep it simple.
Great video. I've been a UX designer for 12 years now, and I really liked your comments about observations and how we gather feedback on a product or experience. I appreciate that you place value on the "evidence," and not just the data. Observations can be just as powerful as a bunch of metrics, even though it's harder to quantify. I'm glad you made this video, because I think it's imperative that those of us who have been around for a while do what we can to help businesses understand the WHY. Double Diamond does a really great job of helping us all "find your why," as Simon Sinek talks about.
Informative video! Thanks for sharing
Hello, Could you please arrange all your playlists in order? the videos are not in order now. Thank you
Thank you for this! This is very helpful for eliminating personal bias in feature prioritization. What happens though when a key feature is tied to the business objectives more so than the persona's priorities? Btw, could you please share a copy of the Google Sheets feature matrix you have in the video? Or a similar template with the formula intact?
thanks for posting! gives hope
Hi Ken, stumbled on this video, thanks for your take on the UX industry! For anyone who is looking to do a bootcamp right now.. As a bootcamp graduate, I would strongly advise against bootcamps right now. Even after completing the certification, working days and nights, it seems the entry level right now is extremely competitive. Just doing a bootcamp won't make you an attractive candidate. You still need to do your own homework and make yourself stand out from thousands of other bootcamp graduates. If I can do it over again, I would find volunteer work with a real client, and build my case study like that.
Hi Ken! Im a career changer looking into UX Design, and I've been hearing and reading about layoffs and how it's terrible for people brand new to the field, but I only hear about Tech. No one talks about all the other industries. For example, im leaning towards maybe UX in the healthcare industry. Great video
Lmao clearly have not read Adam Smith fully but your point makes sense
This is so helpful! Thank you
Great content, would love to know which sources you recommend to read up on the topic. One of the classics I know is Edward Tufte e.g.

Most of those job postings are not real. I've seen a lot of hiring managers on social media saying the company's strategy is to post (and post multiple times) fake jobs to give the appearance of a healthy company.
so they will repost 1 job for every major city. So one potentially fake job will have 100 fake postings. So the actual job count may be closer to 150
Sound and voice greate!
Hi Ken! Your video has helped with some of my worries as I move toward my UX/UI career, and now that I feel more comfortable with UX demand, I'd like to ask a question or two. I plan on getting a Graduate Degree in UX, but a lot of people have gone with bootcamps with great success - is it worth it, in your opinion, to splurge on the Graduate Degree and will I stand out because it's not a bootcamp? Or do you think bootcamps are more than sufficient to get into the field successfully?
Great to hear! As far as bootcamps I created a video that give you my take: th-cam.com/video/wNBGpKwaCUw/w-d-xo.html It's a very personal decision. In short I think you shouldn't do a bootcamp for the value on your resume but if you realize the cost and risk and still feel it matches your goals and learning style.
Hello, I am thinking about getting into ux design and wondering what the best way would be to get my self inserted into the field. Thank you
The answer is.....(I hate to do this). It depends. Some people are super gifted in a speciality, some people already have experience that are close to UX, some people really need to learn a lot. I think your stage in life, finances also factor in.
loved this
Glad I came across this video, got more clarity on the trends of Ux designers being layed off 🧢
Glad it was helpful!
Very clear, thank you !
You are welcome!
I am UX designer and my company started layoff including me and senior layoff, finding job from last 2 months still not getting job at Ahemdabad
I hope everything work out!
Hello Ken, it's a great video. I'm still in the Google UX specialization, and I needed that kind of motivation. What do you think about combining UX/UI with website creation with Wordpress with DIVI?
I used Wordpress and Divi: usinsuranceaudit.com I PERSONALLY found it harder to find Wordpress freelance work in the past 3 years, probably because of SquareSpace and more emphasis on social media. Hope that helps
💎💎💎 a lot of insight here!
Thanks!
The quality of your videos are amazing, your channel definitely deserves more attention!
That's super encouraging!
Thank you. You might want to check on that Forrester reference. I remember reading about it back in like 2008. So the % you are presenting surely have changed.
Ken your analysis are factual. Thank you for sharing.
So I did a UX design remote job search for entry level and came up with 4 job openings especially when narrowing it down to jobs posted in the past month or week. Yes if you just put UX design jobs posted ever with no parameters you probably will get 14k openings. But if you are new it doesn't help a job posted 8 months ago or a experienced designer job. So it might be good possibly if you are experienced not sure if it is any good at this time to just get involved into UI UX design especially going into 2024.
Sorry it got narrowed down like that. My main point was "dead" was a bit extreme to say. Honestly, the market is more saturated for Juniors. And the market will always change and future for EVERYTHING is never certain. I still believe we are in an experience-based economy and designers have value that's needed.
Ken, thank you for being a mature UX voice in the sea of nonsensical creators. You have a place up there with NN/g in terms of professionalism and quality. I appreciate your work!
Wow, thank you!
Great Video!
Thanks!
thanks a lot 🎯
you are welcome!
I like that the information is very well structured in all the videos I have seen. I also like the tone of the voice and the rhythm of each presentation. They are important.
I'm glad you like them!
No, the Titanic is not sinking!
That's true!
Hii sir, i just find your videos, its really useful. Can you a communith to help beginners
Nice Content sir
Thanks!
what AI does well, is produce an average from a dataset, that is largely the opposite of good UX Design. Rather than the logic “this is what usually works in this context”, a good UX Designer considers what is unique about the context? what extra affordances should be made to better serve the users of this system? AI is tools which can help shortcut some processes, but usually a skilled person is required to use them effectively.
This does make personas really practical!
Mind mapping is a more efficient approach!
I'm glad you feel that way!
Thank you Sir! It would be good if you are showing how you usually mind map with an example.
That's a good idea. Thanks
thanks Ken I am following the videos and find them helpful
That's super awesome to hear.
Super insightful video! Incredibly well-articulated.
Super encouraging to hear! Thanks for the feedback.
As a Director of a Data Team, I appreciate this video. I hope it's a series =]
That means a ton! I will need to have you as a special guest!
I learned something today!
I am so glad you got something @kdog24life !
Always love using dual track in Enterprise work. It seems to be the only way to do agile in those environments without friction or the appearance of slowing things down.
I should have made that point!
Great video explaining the benefits of a dual-track agile approach for UX! I appreciate you highlighting how UX workflows and needs can differ from those of software developers. A discovery track allows for more comprehensive user research, holistic design thinking, and validation before dev work begins. This ultimately leads to better products that truly meet user needs. I think you make excellent counterpoints to common criticisms of dual-track agile. Maintaining collaboration between tracks is so important to avoid silos, as is UX designers being flexible teammates willing to help where needed (not just focused on future state). Overall, dual-track agile seems like an effective way to leverage UX's strengths in a positive way that enhances agile development. Thanks for sharing these insights! Looking forward to more videos.
Thanks Josh! I am so glad to have you be so active in providing feedback! This help me develop new content.
Can dual track agile be performed in a way that is fair to all parties?
great question. the UX workflow doesn't really gel with agile but you seem to have helped to explain why UX needs an additional track.
@@expchrist I"m glad you got something! Have a good one Josh!
