    Your pricing is right on point. I'm in DFW and the projects I've been hired for and brought people on to join my team have been equal to that. You're so right about making that day rate for just showing up and not doing any post production or handling the client. Any money made in a day is better than staying home and making no money. Thanks for sharing!!

    Hey Joel, thanks for a great video. I noticed you have a power bank. I was curious, how much run time do you get from it and which model is it? I am considering grabbing one (DJI) for on the go and precisely for using it with my Molus as well, but concerned about little run time from it. I am curious if you have tried it and if so, I'd' appreciate you sharing the runtime. Thank you!

    Man, those day rates are so far out of my reach it's quite depressing. 😂 The market in my area is so crushed that people go out for as low as around $250 per day without equipment, 12 hour shoots, half hour lunch break if you're lucky, travel time isn't considered working time... And if you have equipment and try to increase your day rate, you better believe clients are gonna pay like 1% of the item's purchasing price at the most.

    Why charge for gear? Why not just charge more for your expertise and time and use what you know will give them the best quality?

    • @marinrealestatephotography
      @marinrealestatephotography หลายเดือนก่อน

      In a perfect world, that form of charging would be great. But the thing is that SOME jobs require a LOT of expensive gear to do the job right, while other jobs can be done with less gear (or less expensive gear). For those jobs requiring less gear, you would still have to charge them a lot more because each job needs to pay off the gear you purchased for the big jobs. At that point, a client might decide to use a videographer who can charge less for a basic shoot (since they aren't having to pay off the gear with each shoot). Also, in general, clients expect to pay more if the videographer has to bring along a lot of lights and spend more time setting up / tearing down.

    Do you ever request payment before handing over / uploading, footage , for new, out of state / over seas clients . I don't really see why the risk has always got to be on our side , I mean what DP would not send the footage , compared to DP,s who have not been paid for their work ! , or had to wait months and hassle to get paid . it would have to be a billion to one ratio ! Cant think of any other freelancer / trade business that works like ours , that we just have to trust total strangers , who might be on the other side of the world , to pay us ,after the shoot and they have the footage .

    I would not be thrilled if I received my audio equipment like this=/ I'm so invested in the Tentacle ecosystem that moving to Diety would not make financial sense. I've been tempted due to the LCD screens on their recorders and timecode boxes. The Astra 6X bicolor priced at $499 is an incredible deal. Even with buying the v-mount power option, it's still less than $650 for an amazing bi-color light. Also, your lighting and camera work on this project was gorgeous! Anddd that's so awesome to share your rate card on YT!

    Regarding the rates if the job is DP, audio + gaffer, do you combine the rates? Or it's all under DP? And camera stuff. Is that also included in the rates (DP) or it's charged separately?

    • @JoelGabrielsen
      @JoelGabrielsen หลายเดือนก่อน

      So ideally, I have everything separated and then combined for a larger total but In the video I said for a job like this I would charge a flat rate of $1,250. This is more of my "One man band" rate. I offer this to local production companies that give me consistent work. A few shoots a month. If it was a one off gig with a company I have not worked with before coming from out of state I would charge differently.

      Im not a fan of these type of lights. There are to many components to get them working. Ballast, Multiple cables, Mounting Brackets, etc. The Astras have everything built in. • @JoelGabrielsen

      Fair enough! The client specifically requested tight dolly shots on this one. I tried to talk them out of saying there was not enough room to make this happen. I set up a monitor for the Director and he loved the shots for the final edit. They are going to be cut up quite a bit with broll. No one shot will hold longer than a few seconds for the final edit. He liked having the movement for relief. Im with you though. If these were stand alone long form interviews with no broll added. It would be distracting.

    Hey, Amazing setup with the Zoom F6 with 2 PicoGear kits. I wish they could introduce a Kit that takes 4 mics, with SD recording. But until then, I've got some questions: 1. Do you find that the Pico mic signal is strong enough coming into the F6, or is it low, needing to be boosted. 2. Does the F6 mic suppression work when someone isn't talking - even for the pico mics? 3. From the PG Kit to F6, which one is better to use - TRS or TRRS? 4. Does the 3.5mm trs to xlr male splitter cable need to be a top-tier Mogami cable, or just the regular $15 cable on amazon will do? (especially considering interference) 5. Do you find that the 2 kits are adequate, or you'd certainly want 3 kits for 6 mics, for things such as panel discussions? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Man this is video came at a pretty opportune time, for me I've been pretty set on eventually leaving my full time job and just being able to someday be full time freelance, and granted I still am leaning that direction... though if anything it may be year or more away lol but your perspective has got me thinking, maybe keeping my full-time job and building up my free-lance like what you're doing isn't such a bad idea, considering things like benefits and all from a full-time job. And in a way I sort of even like my full time job, sort of. lol so maybe I won't be as quick to run away like I'd been thinking for a while now 🤔 I also like the one man band type of work more personally as well, not that I'd be averse to working with others but I just feel like I enjoy it more on my own. I know that type of freelance won't scale like a team would but I'm ok with not having a huge business with employees etc (at least with where my goals are now)

      ps. darn it I just got to the part where you mentioned leaving California lol I still live in California so cost of living is astronomical lol but I'm still a bachelor so I don't have all the costs that you do 🤔

    0:20 one thing I do miss about the 7" Atomos I had for a while was using it as a 25-59.97hz pannel over HDMI they make amazing portable monitors for grading and checking when you got a laptop with suspect pannel quality.

      Yes absolutely! I do love the Atomos products. The only downside with the old 7in monitors is they chew through power so much. I would have to keep a ton of batteries with me. Other than that the quality was amazing.

      @@JoelGabrielsen Yeah they are definitely power hungry and run hot compared to some of the newest stuff, not even weatherproof too! I do like my PowerExtra NPF bats though PD passthough and 73wh runs for hours, sadly newer brands don't have both voltage and a percentage bar, small rig have copied the PD passthough idea though.

    this is a good breakdown. sometimes people get really excited about the tax break of buying new gear, but forget you have to report the used gear you sold as income. so in reality, if you sell Camera A for $5000 in order to buy camera B for $7000… you are really only getting a “$2000” write off.

      Yes! this is a great point! I sell mostly of my stuff on eBay. They provide me with a TAX document I can turn in. Living in Arkansas I don't get a whole lot of local sales. If I do I try to get some sort of "Bill of Sale" that I'll try to turn as well. But you're correct. You do got to think about this as well when purchasing new equipment and selling old equipment.

    I’ve been doing freelance video work for 5 years now and still see myself somewhat as a beginner, so thank you for sharing! I’ve taken the same approach-I’d rather own all my gear for 2 reasons: 1.) The tax purposes like you mentioned 2.) I live in (rural) Montana, so I couldn’t rent even if I wanted to. It also means I can’t really rent my gear out either, but it still makes sense financially. I appreciate your insights!

      That's awesome!!! Makes total sense. Montana is wonderful. Try to get out to Flathead Lake every few years. Amazing. Thanks for watching!
