If I was in narrative or tv it would be different. But as someone who frequently gets near immediate request for corporate work, it’s crucial to have a basic kit available at all times. Only recently have started renting and offloading costs to client and that is going great!

Absolutely! That makes total sense to me. I do know a ton of narrative DP's who have never owned a camera and have so much work. I just know for me I love to tinker with my setup constantly. I like having my own gear for sure.

How did you begin getting your clients? Word of mouth? Reach-out?

IF you are working a lot it is adventageous to own your own hardware. Time is everything and running around hoping to get a piece of hardware is not effecient after a while. I took a gamble and invested in (quality) gear and I feel it was worth it. i stopped shooting a few years ago but much of it is battle ready to this day. Thanks for the inspirational videos. Cheers from Atlanta

At my point in my career with small to midrange corporate work it always makes sense for me to have a basic 3 point lighting kit with a camera and audio package. Anything that defers from that (like teleprompters or special requests) I charge extra for. Just had a shoot Wednesday that asked for a teleprompter and got a nice little gear rental charge for that. At some point I’ll get more gear for bigger jobs but for now my kit has been doing great (minus shooting into the Texas sun) don’t think I’ll ever sell the essential pieces I need to do interview/Broll work but I’ll probably look into selling my less used gear like drones or lenses I rarely use. Great vlog!

i like your perspective. you take as much work as you can, and you’re willing to work with what the client has. and it’s cool to see that evens out over the year! also encouraging hearing that it took you 15 years to build towards this. didn’t just happen overnight. good vid man!

Great video Joel. The one-stand booklights are a time-saver for sure, but the absolute gem tip from this video... putting wheels on those slider stands. Genius! 😅 I'm immediately looking up where to get some wheels haha.

Glad it was helpful! I love having roller stands with the dana dolly. Makes it easy to move around for sure! Thanks for watching!

I like having my own camera kit. Feel kinda exposed otherwise. But when it comes to lighting, i use the smallest stuff I can, im too old for all those big lights. lol.

love all your gear. I'm already semi retired and do just simple work so I 've sold most of my gear already. Great watching your channel, though.

I've been working with rented gear for almost 13 years, but then I decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and get my own kit. So far, I haven't gotten much more work because of it, but it is really nice to be able to ask a client: "Hey, if you're interested, we could shoot on my new RED camera, you know, the one they shoot almost every commercial on...?" 😎

Hey Joel! Some Ultrabounce Pieces might work nicely to box in your book light. It's significantly lighter than Duvy. I'd go white side in and keep some additional light bouncing around in there.

Have you tried rending out your gear that you don't use? I bet you'd gather up some extra cash.
What are your camera settings in the shots showcased in this video? They're really clean, in focus. Looks great!

    • @JoelGabrielsen
      @JoelGabrielsen  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes for sure! I rent out a lot of gear. I just don't rent out my 1 ton van. I haven't figured the insurance portion of renting out a vehicle yet. We're using the FX3 and FX6 4K Slog3. Tamron 35-150 on the main and sony 85 1.8 on the dana dolly.

Nisi sells 100mmx100mm nd filters for the photo lineup which I yhink you can use in the mattebox C5, but also in a much smaller filterholder. Think its called a v5 or something simillar. Might be worth looking into as you could use those filters in the c5 if needed and maybe a teleprompter?

I prefer owning the equipment. Overtime it can be cost effective; I save time from renting gear; and I have the option to take last minute gigs I like; also being intimate with the gear I own increases production quality.
On the other hand, I am often concerned about the constant release of new gear and advancing technology, even though I am aware that “new” does not automatically mean “better.”

I see what looks like a pair of AKG open back headphones
I personally hate monitoring with open back headphones, I find it much harder to pick up things like freeway noise or aircraft
Harder to tell if what you're hearing is just your ear or the mic

I did not know my black bed sheets counted as photo gear? (Subversive goth tendancies for the win!) In addition to photography, i also do sound and photobooths.... owning my own gear is a must. Also, knowing how to use rental gear is also-also a must. I probably wont own anything more serious than an fx3, but those fx3 skills can totally be used when renting a bigger camera. As far as sound, i keep it under 10,000 watts for my gear while having had the experience of working for larger production companies doing those corporate gigs with line arrays.... i think understabing scale of any project is a must. In determining owning vs rental gear. If i had it my way I'd own ALL the toys.
