Your pricing is right on point. I'm in DFW and the projects I've been hired for and brought people on to join my team have been equal to that. You're so right about making that day rate for just showing up and not doing any post production or handling the client. Any money made in a day is better than staying home and making no money. Thanks for sharing!!
Love how you used the C100 to make that room look like a lab - it really worked!! Also love your attitude about it being okay that the shoot was hard, because that’s why they’re paying you! 🙌🏻
I love the look of that rate sheet. Very easy to read and price out of in the client. Thanks for sharing. And I’m at the same rate as well for a DP. No complaints when you stack a few multi day gigs a month.
Shots looking crispy man! The rate sheet is very interesting. I have one made but I never send it out because sometimes I'm flexible depending on the project (both less and more).
Really appreciate you sharing your rate sheet. It's nice to have publicly available comps that I can point to when a new potential client gets sticker shock.
Thanks for the video. Wondering now that you have the Theos and the Deity slate, whether you are going to switch out the Tentacle Sync for Deity TC-1 tiemcode boxes? And very nice job on your rate sheet. It's easy to read and looks professional.
I would not be thrilled if I received my audio equipment like this=/ I'm so invested in the Tentacle ecosystem that moving to Diety would not make financial sense. I've been tempted due to the LCD screens on their recorders and timecode boxes. The Astra 6X bicolor priced at $499 is an incredible deal. Even with buying the v-mount power option, it's still less than $650 for an amazing bi-color light. Also, your lighting and camera work on this project was gorgeous! Anddd that's so awesome to share your rate card on YT!
Man, those day rates are so far out of my reach it's quite depressing. 😂 The market in my area is so crushed that people go out for as low as around $250 per day without equipment, 12 hour shoots, half hour lunch break if you're lucky, travel time isn't considered working time... And if you have equipment and try to increase your day rate, you better believe clients are gonna pay like 1% of the item's purchasing price at the most.
Recently picked up a used FS5M2 on eBay It showed up and the seller and wrapping the OEM screen with the charger plug meaning it rubbed against the screen in shipping and scratched the crap out of it.....some people just don't care
Regarding the rates if the job is DP, audio + gaffer, do you combine the rates? Or it's all under DP? And camera stuff. Is that also included in the rates (DP) or it's charged separately?
So ideally, I have everything separated and then combined for a larger total but In the video I said for a job like this I would charge a flat rate of $1,250. This is more of my "One man band" rate. I offer this to local production companies that give me consistent work. A few shoots a month. If it was a one off gig with a company I have not worked with before coming from out of state I would charge differently.
Im not a fan of these type of lights. There are to many components to get them working. Ballast, Multiple cables, Mounting Brackets, etc. The Astras have everything built in. You just have to plug them in and hit the power button. I prefer them for faster setups like this. Just my preference.
Fair enough! The client specifically requested tight dolly shots on this one. I tried to talk them out of saying there was not enough room to make this happen. I set up a monitor for the Director and he loved the shots for the final edit. They are going to be cut up quite a bit with broll. No one shot will hold longer than a few seconds for the final edit. He liked having the movement for relief. Im with you though. If these were stand alone long form interviews with no broll added. It would be distracting.
@@JoelGabrielsen What client wants is the most important :D. Client is always right :D. If they loved it, cool. For most DP/one man band guys sliders are the most dusty piece of gear :D.
Do you ever request payment before handing over / uploading, footage , for new, out of state / over seas clients . I don't really see why the risk has always got to be on our side , I mean what DP would not send the footage , compared to DP,s who have not been paid for their work ! , or had to wait months and hassle to get paid . it would have to be a billion to one ratio ! Cant think of any other freelancer / trade business that works like ours , that we just have to trust total strangers , who might be on the other side of the world , to pay us ,after the shoot and they have the footage .
In a perfect world, that form of charging would be great. But the thing is that SOME jobs require a LOT of expensive gear to do the job right, while other jobs can be done with less gear (or less expensive gear). For those jobs requiring less gear, you would still have to charge them a lot more because each job needs to pay off the gear you purchased for the big jobs. At that point, a client might decide to use a videographer who can charge less for a basic shoot (since they aren't having to pay off the gear with each shoot). Also, in general, clients expect to pay more if the videographer has to bring along a lot of lights and spend more time setting up / tearing down.
@@literallykevin so someone offers $400 so you pull up with cheap gear to do a cheap job and the product looks cheap. Why would you want your name attached to that?

I love that sharkfin idea on the fx3. That's crazy! Do you have any videos on how you rig up your fx3's?

Since the Cinpeer and the Astras share similar output is it safe to say these could be used as key light with diffusion

What's the brand of the scrim you mentioned? The one made out of PVC?

Yes! That's always the goal but knowing there will probably be some negotiating at some point.
Nanlite 240C might be better choice than these Astras nowadays, but if I have them already I wouldn't upgrade ....

Nice looks, but not a fan of these doly shots ... camera moving too fast (guess because of the zoom) and makes me motion sick :D

This is true!! I usually get a good use out of an auto slider that I love. But this project was sold on a dana dolly specifically.

Why charge for gear? Why not just charge more for your expertise and time and use what you know will give them the best quality?
In a perfect world, that form of charging would be great. Every shoot degrades your equipment a little in some way. You're basically charging for the depreciation.
