    Totalboat non skid needs a week to cure or more. It's been awful with the new formula. Kiwi grip if you need to use the boat the next day. Don't leave the tape down though. Pull it after an hour.

      The boat is still on the hard. I got laid off from my job on April 1st (haha 🤬) and my financial priorities shifted. I'm slowly climbing out of that and I'm hoping to step the mast in the next week or two, then in the spring I'll strip and repaint the bottom. I'm hopeful to get her back into the water early next season. Thanks for asking!

      To be honest, she's still on the hard as I work to restore her. I was laid off in April and I thought it best to wait until I had steady income so I haven't had much time onboard other than the summer I bought her. She handled like a dream though, if you can get used to steering in reverse with the skeg, which really isn't that hard. She's a great boat.

    Fortunately, I don't have a credit card, just a normal bank card, like most here, fortunately you don't have any bills afterwards, everything is paid immediately. You then know where you stand and will not get into debt, saving is also automatic. Here in the Netherlands we are used to saving, you are taught that as a child, if you have no money, you cannot buy anything.

    Good to see you finally got the Angle Grinder out and not mess around just cut it and be done. There are loads of other sailing TH-camrs cutting out their seacocks with grinders or reciprocating saws. Good luck with your channel

      Thanks for the encouragement! Honestly, if I'd have had the step wrench for the first one, it probably would have done the trick. The second was super easy with the step wrench, and the third would have been easy if I'd bothered to clamp down the fitting from the inside to keep it from turning. I highly recommend a step wrench, although they're expensive and not useful for anything else. On the plus side, having one to loan out is a great way to make friends. The angle grinder was handy so I grabbed it but it was probably overkill for the situation at hand. Of course, I specialize in overkill, soooo....

      Maybe, but being a centerboarder it will be notably less stable than the fin keel version which is certainly safe in open water, drafting 5 1/2 ft.

      @@gossardpictures2268 It makes sense that a 4' draft would be less stable than a 5.5' draft, but this boat was a compromise of condition, attributes and price. It's a coastal cruiser and I don't have plans to sail across an ocean with it.

    I am just finishing up with painting my 1964 Pearson Electra. I had a similar experience with the Total Boat products. After painstakingly sanding, grinding and filling spider cracks and fairing the hull, I applied Total Boat Wet Edge primer. Using foam rollers in 75-80 degree weather at about 40-50% humidity, the primer went on thick, lumpy and gooey, taking several days to dry. I had to sand nearly all of it off. The next 2 coats went slightly better after thinning about 15%, but still unable to get a smooth finish. The primer took about 72 hours to dry enough to sand, still gumming up the sand paper. After wiping the boat with denatured alcohol as recommended, the hull was the sprayed with TB Wet Edge topside paint. There were several places where the paint had millions of pin holes where the paint didn't seem to adhere to the primer. When removing the tape after painting the boot stripe, the finish paint came right off in numerous places. This has been a very frustrating experience, and I wouldn't recommend Total Boat primers or paints for diy'ers. Maybe an expert can get great results under perfect conditions, but I am pretty disappointed after spending so much time carefully prepping the hull. I have never had so much trouble with primer, it is usually the easiest thing to do. I would recommend Total Fair and Thixoflex for filling chips, spider cracks, etc. Those products work great.

    That house battery needs charging . Simple rule we use over here , 12.2 is indicating it's fully discharged , 12.9 is fully charged , 13.6 indicates it's charging . A discharged battery over the winter , is not a good place to be , and damage will almost certainly follow ! .

    Hmmm , personally i think your problem with the paint , is due to the fact , you appear to have used a primer then top coat . I don't see the use of an etch primer anywhere . Now fibreglass is a pain to paint at the best of times . You should dull the paint as a first step , to a matt finish . Now this is pretty standard practice , so i'm guessing you did do this . Can't fault your cleaning process so your problem is not there , despite this being another issue if not done correctly . Where you do appear to fall flat on your face , is the lack of etch primer , probably known as a bonding coat , your side of the pond . Now this stuff actually eats into the surface , though you wouldn't know it , to create a firm foundation for the following coats . The surface should ideally , be scuffed heavily with around 120 grade to provide a good key , then etched primed after a thorough cleaning . The stuff i use needs to be left for 24 hours to do its work , before any more work can be carried out . Then what i do is apply a second coat , and leave for another 24 hours . I do lightly sand between coats , but it is very light . Then i apply two coats of primer , sanding between . The reason you sand is due to overcoat time , but this also flattens the finished surface . Overcoat times are normally limited to around 24 hours , but i sand anyway for extra grip . The second sand is a bit more aggressive , but with a lighter grade , around 240/320 . Don't whatever you do , break through the etch primer at any cost . If you do , reapply more etch primer to that spot , and start again . Then apply a third coat of primer , followed by top coat , sanding lightly between . Apply a minimum 2 coats of finish paint , but i would go for 3 , again lightly sanding between all coats . Stay off the painted surface for at least a week , and personally i would leave any further work on that surface for at least a month , for the paint to fully harden . That includes further painting of any kind . I'm no expert with boat paint , but this is the process i use for painting fibreglass , plastic , and aluminium . All tricky surfaces to paint , as all have keying (grip) issues . Initially , i was taught in an aircraft paint shop , though i never completed the training , i do regularly paint my own vehicles with perfect results .

      That's very insightful. I actually did sand between the coats but I've never heard of etch primer, and the manufacture didn't mention it in their literature. It's a half hour drive to the marina from where I live and I also work a full-time job, in addition to freelancing. If I remember correctly, it was also raining a lot so I missed several opportunities. As a result, I think where I really went wrong is that I waited too long between applying the primer and the top coat, giving the primer time to cure and prohibiting the top coat from bonding with the primer as it should have. Lesson learned for next time. It's actually been holding up pretty well this year, so I'm hoping that maybe the top coat hadn't fully cured when I made this video.

    Great video. I am always amazed at how much craftsmanship goes into boats while puzzled that nobody back in the day could design a portlight window that isn't a constant source of future maintenance.

      True! I've thought the same thing...these portlights are so simple (which in a way is good because someone like me can take a whack at fixing them). I think it might be due to the relatively primitive bonding agents they had to work with back then, coupled with the lack of imagination that these boats would still be in service today. I mean, the year 2023 probably seemed like sci-fi in 1976. Boats would surely fly in 2023.

    I need to do this on Artemis! My rails just came out of the companion watching cover. Still works, but it rattles like hell, when we motor.

      Yes, mine did that too, so annoying! I can still hear it. It haunts my dreams. And I had to shove that rail back underneath the cover every time I closed the hatch. It's so smoooth now.

      I neglected to show how in order to get the hatch off those rails, you need to remove the two forward screws from each rail so the rail will lift up, allowing the lip of the hatch to clear the lip of the companionway.

    This is soooooo helpful!!! My gear shifter cable snapped last weekend at the top of the binnacle. The marina mechanic wants $1000+ to replace it. I’m going to attempt to do this myself and see how far I get

      @@ontheruntonowhere I ended hiring a mechanic to relocate the cables to the starboard cockpit hull. That way we could go sailing one more time this season. Running them down the pedestal seemed a bit above my pay grade for now. I also did not want to potentially mess up the brand new autopilot cables, that also run down that pedestal.

    I agree with the PBR comment! Solid performance deserves a good beer sir. Any chance you can explain how you got the screw to line up with the collar so far down in the column? It’s hard to tell but with the chain out-of-the-way is it easy to see where the collar lines up with the hole? I’m trying to help a buddy who just bought a cape dory and a one year old shifter cable snapped off top in the steering column

      If I remember correctly, lining up the collar was probably the easiest part of this project. The cables are fairly rigid so you can sight through the hole in the housing and line up the collar by maneuvering the cables around. What size Cape Dory?

    I have a 1981 PETERSON 30 foot where I just put a new Volvo penta MD7B into her. Then got everything hooked up and running started going forward and reverse on the buoy and my shift cable snapped off so this video helps me understand what I’m gonna have to deal with thank you you’re awesome keep up the sailing videos

    Do you still have the drop down centerboard? My Bristol34 didn’t come with it and I was curious if it helps you point better?

      I do have the centerboard model, although I haven't used it yet. I'm still on the hard doing the refit and I probably won't splash for another year. Artemis's draft is 5.5', right? How does she point?

      @@ontheruntonowhere i Have the centerboard model too, but it has been lost over the years. So I bought the boat without it, and that helped me get a lower price. At some point I would like to have it remade. With the centerboard down you can point higher into the wind and pinch less. At least that’s what others have told me.

      @@AlittleSAILING Oh, interesting. Is the slot glassed over or something? When I did the passage through the Long Island Sound, I thought Ladybug handled great with the board up, but we only sailed for a bit and it was downwind. What's your hull number? Mine's 62.

      @@ontheruntonowhere Good question! Ill have to look at the hull number this weekend. I think Artemis sails pretty well even without the centerboard. Last year when the boat was on the hard, I got a good look at the bottom of the keel. It’s never been glassed over, but is full of barnacles. The cables for the centerboard have also been removed. How do you lower yours?

      @@AlittleSAILING I only ask the good questions! 😉 The cable runs from the board up through a tube affixed to the chart table (9:27), then over a pulley (17:30). It's then spliced into a line which is managed by a winch and cam cleat affixed to the aft port cabin top (16:50). Are you overall happy with Artemis? Where is your traveler located? Mine runs across the cockpit (16:55) which is totally in the way, so I'm cutting it out and running a double mainsheet like this: www.boatdesign.net/attachments/boom-mainsheets-jpg.14676/

      Thanks for the props! You'll notice I used the small-to-large patching method. I felt like large-to-small would leave an airspace around the perimeter of the hole. I paid the ferret union wages and gave it breaks between shoots.

      I doubt I'm ever going back to Nassau. The people were incredibly nice but everything is very expensive and there are places the locals don't want you to go, which is a bummer because I like to get away from the tourist areas. I'd like to check out more of the family islands on boatback.

      Thank you! It's nerve-wracking with everyone watching. I've only pulled into a finger slip once, during my ASA course. But I did it in reverse on a Hunter 42! Unlike you though, I have yet to actually sail my boat aside from an hour in very light winds with a chaperone aboard. I hear B34s are amazing to sail. Looking forward to your next season!

    Good job docking. I was getting sweaty palms watching you back in to that marina. From my experience with reversing my Bristol 32, control is non existent.

      Go Bristol! It does take some practice to drive a skeg or full keel in reverse. I spent a couple hours driving figure 8s in reverse in open water and it boosted my confidence immensely. The trick is to get a couple knots of speed on before you need to steer, then slow and steady. If you feel like you're losing steerage, goose the throttle just a little, it doesn't take much. The goal is just enough steerage to shift into neutral and coast into the slip without overshooting.
