    When I think of Portland, I think of the metro area as a whole, including the city's districts, the burbs, and the xburbs, so this is more of a suburb vs city comparison, so you could do the same with Lake O, the Couve, etc.

    Mayor and city council is woke as shit. Beaverton used to be quite red but now is heavily blue. Washington county is becoming beyond purple. Thank God we have a county DA (Kevin Barton) who still believes in law and order, unlike Schmidtstain in Portland. People (including us) moved to Beaverton because it was not Portland. Too bad our city leadership does not get that. It is rapidly becoming blue virus Portland. Beaverton school district is a woke shit show now. I thank God that my kids have all recently graduated. I would home school before I let 48J educate another one of my kids. Property taxes here are out of control. We moved here in 2010 and property taxes were $4400. Now they are almost $8k. For what? DEI policy? The police are great and have a constant presence. TVFR is top notch as well. Town center has some "holiday" lights put up but they don't say for which holiday. I emailed them asking about that and never got a response. Blue virus.

      @oregonresident-s6o 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was wondering about property taxes, thanks for bringing this up. Have you considered that the property taxes might have been gradually increasing over the last decade due to Measure 50? This was late 90s stuff that might be trickling down. If Beaverton had been charging the max they could be, it might have made the recent increases in the last decade either not possible or less intense for someone who just moved to the city within that time.

      Also Schmidt (Mult Co) and Barton seem to have similar stances on how to prosecute certain crimes related to drug use. What is Barton pulling off that Schmidt isn't?

    Actually, the state income tax rate is higher for most earners in Oregon. Annual income $40K, OR 6.83% CA 1.85%. Annual income $80K, OR 6.96% CA4.91%. Annual income $120K, OR 7.75% CA 6.68%. I was quite surprised when my state income tax more than doubled on my pension when I moved here 4 years ago.

  • @MarvinThiessen
    @MarvinThiessen 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The west side of town is more expensive (too expensive), but it's much better than living on the east side. From personal experience, the west side (not downtown) is more laid back and less stressful. In contrast, parts of the east side can (and do) resemble 1880 Dodge City, Kansas. East Portland is a little cheaper, but there are more homeless on the east side of the river. I don't understand how a city that rains 9 months a year can have such a high cost of living. In January of '76 I was stationed at Ft. Ord in Monterey, Ca. It was 75-80 degrees. Portland in January is miserable, that's when local yuppies take their vacations in Hawaii or the Caribbean. $531 million (and counting) has been spent and wasted on failed "solutions" to the homeless epidemic, so buckle up if you choose to move here, City Hall and Metro never met a tax they didn't like.

    • @portlandoregonliving
      @portlandoregonliving 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I see what you're saying. West side is pretty luxurious and nice, with all the neighborhoods ending in "Heights".. And I mean SW is home to Multnomah Village and Hillsdale, which are two awesome walkable neighborhoods amongst all the nature and hills, making it feel kinda suburby but still with the Portland charm. But there's a lot of East side neighborhoods I wouldnt rule out if someone moving to PDX were reading this comment. Sellwood, Richmond, Sunnyside, Irvington, Concordia, Beaumont Wilshire, Alameda, Mount Tabor, parts of Montavilla... To name just a few. Thanks for watching, Marvin! 🙂

    My husband & I are living in a duplex in Bend that my son owns. We are very senior and for years I have been the property manager. I am healthier than most people half my age and my doctor agrees. I take zero medications and am very energetic. My problem with Bend is the inadequate medical system here, the altitude and the arid climate. I grew up at sea level in NYC and then lived on the Ca. Coast - on the Ocean always - like Laguna Beach and Mill Valley. I want to move up to Portland because it is a progressive city and because I want to be where it is not a desert climate and is at sea level where I feel much more comfortable. Our combined income includes both of our social security and will also include about $1200 a month as we will get have half of the cost of the rental which will be around $2300 a month. I want my son, the landlord, to get the other half. I am a working artist and jeweler as well so I can make money as I have a huge body of work. Do you think we would have any difficulty renting a one or 2 bedroom in Portland in a decent neighborhood?

      Congrats on the new job! I currently am licensed to only help with real estate sales at the moment (rentals are a separate license in Oregon) but I'm stoked for you to make your move!

      @@portlandoregonliving … thx for that Matt 😉👍🏻. When I come out (undetermined), I’m going to definitely concentrate on and walk the NW 23rd and the Pearl District. My “musts” are high walkable neighborhood and easy access to Max/Streetcar public transport as I no longer find driving enjoyable. 🫤. Thinking I might come out in the winter months to see if I can tolerate it. (Currently live in South Florida). It’s easy to fall in love with someplace in the nice time of year but it’s a different story when it’s drizzling and cold, right 🧐

    I would like to also make the trash comment that even the dive bars here often serve food that would rival the best street foods elsewhere. Bars run the gambit, from elite wine and whiskey to punk bottle shops, but there is a very strong drinking culture which some people say dominates the social scene.

    3:51 that’s the Willamette in Eugene at the Frohnmayer bridge, not Portland/Selwood like you were speaking of. River is drastically different in these two places.

      Good catch sir! Wasn't sure if anyone would notice that. 🫣 I am still ironing out the kinks as I transition to a new editor, and when I saw that I decided, "close enough!" 🤷 To me, it wasn't worth waiting an extra day to get the content out there, for them to make the revision! Because it was still the Willamette river, I figured I would give it a pass for B roll. But you're right, that shot is from a bit south of Portland. Thanks for watching and continuing to hold me to a standard! 🫡

      @@portlandoregonliving I appreciate the response but that’s a bit like talking about the Mississippi River in Louisiana and showing drone footage of it in Minnesota. Willamette falls on this river just south of Portland is the second largest fall by volume in the US. Niagara is first. Its power plants from 1890s and future return to native tribal fishing is an interesting story. Kayak up from the lower side is worth an excursion while it is still summer.

    I live in British Columbia and we have a high homeless population as well. The smaller city I lived in did not start having an issue until 2017. That year, rent almost doubled in some cases. Since then, rent has continued to skyrocket. So much so that some one bedrooms go for as high as 2300 a month. We are also going to have a higher homeless population due to the warmer climate compared to other provinces. The cost of food and gas has skyrocketed as well and its time to hold greedy corporations accountable. The other thing that needs changed is better mental health treatment. It used to be fairly easy to access mental health care in my city. Now, it is over a year to even be able to see a psychiatrist at our Mental Health Unit. We are at a point that a significant number of homeless are 'working homeless'. I know more than one family that were renting for many many years. Some had been in their homes for over 10 years. When rent started to skyrocket, landlords took advantage of that and a ridiculous amount of 'renovictions' or landlords suddenly needing the home for a relative, increased. These people now had to find a new place to live and were in for a shock when they discovered the cost of rentals had massively increased. Not only that, there was a lack of rentals. It broke my heart to know so many that ended up having to live in tents until they could find housing. Here in BC, the average disabled person receives just 375 towards shelter. This is why many disabled end up on the streets. Same with elderly. There needs to be changes everywhere. Housing first is such an important program and its really positive to see more cities doing this.
