Definitively, I prefer the west side, especially the southwest and the northwest.
Life long East sider 💜.
Great job describing our neighborhoods
It’s such a shame US progressives can’t be like European social democrats. Instead, it’s this weird mix of drugs, identity politics, and corporate activism. Just socialize healthcare and universities, ban all drugs, and put the crazies, gang members, and druggies in sanatoriums for life.
What is the best area to find all modern homes and not just a redo on a block of old properties? Someone says Hillsboro. I wouldn't buy for $600k and it's next to a hoarder house or poorly maintained properties
So just to be clear, what exactly do you mean by "all modern?" Like brand new construction? Or just something maybe built in the last 20-30 years. Either way, there's numerous options most of which will be found in pretty much any nearby suburb of Portland, including Hillsboro. Check out this video I made touring a few different areas you might like: th-cam.com/video/vqiRBpxrKhA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sHj2yADgzbQ7CtSH
The corner of SE Hawthorne and Caesar Chavez is the center of my universe.
Tov.
I think I would love the east side the most! Seems really chill and community minded.

I've lived in Portland for the past 13 years and still haven't found a super solid Mexican joint. Coming from El Mazitlan in Kentucky. Where is the queso sauce?!
Well when it comes to queso... Have you had the hot queso from Matt's BBQ tacos?? It's 🔥🔥 As far as super solid Mexican joints...Have you had Tienda Santa Cruz in St John's (there's a location on Burnside and 82nd as well)? Or the burritos from La Morenita on Hawthorne? Or Taco Salsa on Stark and 149th? If not you have some homework to do.. Report back after trying them. I lived in LA for 10 years and think any of these spots could stand alone in so cal. 🙌
I think I prefer the west side to the east side. I lived in Portland in the 90s and am thinking of moving back. Ideally, condos in the Pearl District or the Arts District, just off the South Park Blocks seem the most ideal.
Nice, would love to connect if you do end up moving back! Thanks for watching my videos. 🙏
i leave on the west side i want to be on the east side i can bike out there
The west side by Washington Park is the area that I have my eye on. I just love how it looks. I've seen the east and it's ok but definitely not for me.
Love that for you! Yeah, everyone will have the side they gravitate to. That's rad that you know what makes sense for you. Are you thinking Arlington Heights?
@@portlandoregonliving The alphabet district. I wont be buying a home when I do make the move. Your videos are very informative.
Right on! Glad I could provide some value to you. Thanks for watching the vids!
@@portlandoregonliving I'll be coming from CA so I appreciate your perspective.
Being way to big and smoggy is not the same as free open drug markets, psychotic Marxists walking the streets and the ANTIFA Facist can’t forget about them. People who I know that have been all of the United States have visited Portland and told me stories that are nothing but alarming and unacceptable for a first world country like America.
Hey there, thanks for stopping by and sharing your opinion. As I read your comment, I get the vibe that you've maybe never been here to Portland, or anywhere in Oregon? I'd encourage you to come and visit sometime if that's true. Also, maybe you're unaware but in September of this year, Oregon reversed measure 110 which was the decriminalization of small amounts of drugs, or the thing you are referencing as "free open drug markets." I too have been all over the United States and can tell you that it's not as scary as your friends have made it out to be. IN FACT, a lot of people openly chose this area to live in over everywhere else in the US. Sure it's not perfect here, and we even have our flaws, but things are being done to mend them. Thanks for watching.
This is my thing. Why do all real estate agents compare there city to Cali and New York 🗽 or Boston.. we all kno it’s expensive there.. but everyone isn’t coming from those city.. what about Denver or Vegas or Phoenix. Austin.. you kno what I’m saying. Not everyone can afford 500k nd up homes.. do Portland metro actually have affordable homes for sale. For the common not so rich ppl..
Yo good question! I actually made an entire video comparing Portland to Denver ha. You can find that on my page if you want, but the cost of living is pretty much idential to places like Denver and maybe a little bit higher than Phoenix, Austin, and Vegas. Yes there are loads of affordable homes in Portland below that 500 mark and I've sold condos as low as 250K, houses as low as 350K, so there's definitely options. Get in touch with me if there's anything I can help with.
Just avoid living downtown since it's a ghost town these days. There's crime everywhere even in affluent neighborhoods. I've lived here for 20 years and heading out in 3-5 years for those reasons. Otherwise, all of the things you mentioned are the perks. And the coast + Gorge are nearby for getaways from the city drama.
What a good video straight to the point, thank you ❤
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏
I drove past Oregon but wish i got to know it better
I'm from Arkansas and really want to move to Portland. My main concern is rent prices, and I don't make much as is. But I loved the place when I visited a few years ago. I've got nothing tying me down to my current location other than family, but even they know that I want to leave some day.
Moving to Portland in February and really enjoyed your video.
Awesome! Would love to help with that! Shoot me a text or an email to connect. 503-583-2081 / Matt.moss @ exprealty.com
We're planning to move to the US from Victoria by March next year, and Seattle and Portland are my top choices, so that we won't feel a huge change. How long does it take for people to quality for house loans? Can we buy a house within 1st six months of living in the city? Ideally, we'd like to buy as soon as possible.
Hey there! Very good question. That depends on a lot of factors such as how quickly you can establish employment, what your income is, how much liquid funds you have available, what other debts you have, what price range you want to buy in, and other factors. Additionally, in order to qualify for most financing here you need to establish some credit within the US which can take some time. How long? I think it depends on some of the factors I mentioned above. All that said, I do believe there are Canadian banks that provide financing in the US. Before you forget, just shoot me a quick email and reference this comment. I'd be happy to chat more with you this coming week and dig a little deeper on how to make this work. Email is matt.moss @ exprealty.com. I'll look for your email. Chat soon! -Matt
It’s a nightmare to live in Portland yep smells like 💩 pee
For the algo
Lol, you're commenting for the algo? 😁 Hell yea
Will definitely be visiting Portland next year. It just has a vibe of being free spirited, creative and inclusive. I can't stand being in a red state any longer.
I love the nature and prices of homes in Portland. I. hate the far left politics. I wish it was center left or center right and it'd be perfect.
My husband and I are in Oklahoma. We plan to move within the next few months. We just don't feel safe here long term given the direction things are moving. We are looking all over. Spent time in Portland before and loved it. It's definitely an option on the table.
Move from one liberal toilet to a another one with a lower cost of living. I guess that’s an improvement no doubt.
Bro.. Why are you even watching this video?
Yeah. Why don’t you walk around the downtown of your forward thinking city and show us how nice it is?
Downtown Portland is gorgeous. Narrow walkable streets. Cute shops on the lower level of buildings. The Japanese gardens and parks actually in downtown. It's a wonderful area. And the people are so nice. I lived in Portland for a short period but left due to my job. Always thought about returning some day.
Funny you never bring up places like Alabama or Mississippi.
I live in Oklahoma City. Our downtown is full of empty brick buildings, homeless people taking over every intersection for miles. They make the center look pretty and then you go three blocks any direction and the roads are awful, tents are setup everywhere, and trash littered. But hey, OKC is booming, that's what they keep saying.
I’d love to hear more about the Portland creative/ fashion scene, I’m a designer from LA thinking about moving to Portland

Everything is going up in price. Apartments are about $.300_400 less then cali. . It rains about 8+months + out off the year. Homes start around 700 thousand at least in the safer areas. Yes its beautiful up haer especially if you like the outdoors but it rains a lot unless you don't mind that. People are ok but not to friendly, plan on being a loner hear. I rather be in sunny friendly California..
18 years old and am really considering moving out from LA to Portland Oregon by next year, do you have any thoughts that would help?
Yeah, just do it! You're very young! Every time I fly into LAX I'm like "ugh I'm so glad I don't live here anymore" and every time I fly into PDX I'm like "man I'm so grateful to live here." If you hate it you can always move again, but I'm a firm believer that you tend to regret the things you don't do in life more than the things you do. Good luck with the decision and thanks for watching!
Me too I visited Seattle and Portland last year I liked both I’m considering moving to either one also coming from LA.
I cant wait to live there. Has everything I want.
all very good points
Thanks for watching, Brian!
I grew up in Portland, it has changed dramatically in the last 10 years! If your not a Anti-America Leftist ,Socialist ... It IS a shithole. All of downtown and S.E. Portland has fallen to the mentally deranged and, drug addicted criminals.
Been to Portland the poeple are the nicest ive met
The Timbers are a really popular sports team that we have.
Yep totally spaced on the timbers (thorns as well!) when I made this video cuz I'm not really a follower of soccer but you're absolutely right. Both the men's and women's pro soccer teams are a huge part of Portland sports culture and I missed that in this video. Still been meaning to get to my first timbers game! Anyways, thanks for watching, James!
The homeless are allowed to pitch their tents right on the sidewalks, which makes it impossible for disabled and elderly people to get around.
Thanks for chiming in about this issue. Technically you are correct that homeless folks can indeed set up tents in Portland, but there is a city wide ordinance that sets guidelines for doing so. For example, technically your tent is only supposed to be set up from 9pm-7am, not supposed to be blocking public right a way whether that's for cars or pedestrians, technically no stoves or cooking stuff is allowed, technically no permanent structures are allowed, etc there's other rules too but I won't list them all here, it's available to learn about at Portland. Gov. There are rules in place but it's very difficult to enforce them when so many people are struggling with that one basic need which is, having access to reasonable shelter. Additionally, nobody that has "access to reasonable shelter" is allowed to camp on public/city property/sidewalks. However, if there are no available shelter beds for someone, there aren't many other options besides needing to sleep outside, unless you have any ideas? Could you imagine how that must feel to not have anywhere to go? Not even a shelter? There's a group here called the Street Services Coordination Center that is responsible for keeping an eye on things and enforcing rules when their assessments deem it necessary, but obviously there's a lot more of a problem that can't just be wished away or complained about in a TH-cam comment, or even regulated to perfection if there were enough resources to regulate it. If there is an area that's causing a danger to the greater public tho, usually the SSCC is at the very least aware of the issue and is supposed to refer it to the police, but that's a whole different challenge and malfunctioning system as well. Anyways, hoping this upcoming election can bring positive change in Portland and if there's areas near where you live that actually do make it impossible for disabled and elderly to get around like you say, you should notify the SSCC and at least get them out there to inspect the area, or maybe they could give you an update on their assessment if they're already aware of the issue. It's also worth noting that a large percentage of homeless people tend to be disabled or elderly. Just an all around struggle to be in that position and sucks for everybody involved..
As big cities go we are pretty cheap. Plus, not having a sales tax really helps.
Do yourself a favor and move to Seattle instead. A lot of the same pros and cons, but even more beautiful and better government. Portland used to be so much cheaper than Seattle that it was a worthy alternative but cost of living has gone way up and the problems have only gotten worse. I left Portland three years ago and while I do miss some things, I don’t regret leaving at all.
Real estate costs are around 40% higher in Seattle than Portland. That's pretty significant and worth considering. Glad you found your spot though, I like Seattle a lot! Thanks for watching.
The government structure is about to change this November though, soon Portland will have a professional city administrator just like every other major US city, along with 12 city council members, which will bring more voice to the people and spread the power out among voices. I think it's going to help combat the stagnation we've had for a long time.
You’re kidding. The last two times I went to Seattle it was so much worse it wasn’t even worth going.
@@Netizen_101 Did you just go downtown or did you go to the neighborhoods where people actually live? Because Seattle has a lot of nice residential neighborhoods that feel much safer than Portland. Yes, housing might be a bit more, but it’s worth it IMO, plus the lack of income tax means more wiggle room in your budget.
@ oh downtown was terrible, not that Portland’s that much better. The neighborhoods are nice, but the ones I’d live in seemed more expensive than Portland’s burbs. When I compare to Portland, I’m thinking neighborhoods west of Portland, which is much nicer, def safer, areas to live with more affordability than Seattle’s burbs. The no income tax is absolutely a plus, but then it has a relative High sales tax. I actually think Portland is a prettier city than Seattle, but I’m so sick of Portland’s politics …
What is a good quaint walkable community in Washington county that's still close to downtown Portland? For example I like Multnomah village but that's unfortunately in the higher tax county.
Hey Brian, I would say Cedar Hills is worth looking at if you want something walkable and in WA County, same with Central/Downtown Beaverton. When are you planning to move? Shoot me a text and we can chat more, I'm happy to help. 503-583-2081
who are you to comment on Portland? Get the fuck back to LA, trailer trash!
Are there areas in Portland that are long and flat and good for long board skating (surf skating) I know they have bike lanes but are there easy places to cruise on a skateboard?
Yeah most of the east side of the river is pretty flat!

Moving to McMinnville in six months
Awesome! Love that town. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. 👐
We're from Cleveland and plan to move to Portland at some point, all our vacations are there even when it's wet and cloudy. At home we have to walk 0 steps from our front door to see people in poverty with dire housing situations, so we are not scandalized by seeing homeless people or expect them to just disappear so the suburbanites don't have to see them. We had like 30 people in an encampment downtown and it made the news that we were able to get them into housing, we do know Portland has a magnitude more difficult situation. We know people there are trying to help every day, but it does seem like some of the funds could be much better spent to have a greater effect. Don't get beat down by the subject, not everyone is being chased away from visiting! Also thank you for not telling everyone to just move to Lake Oswego instead.
Thanks for the kind words! Good luck on your move when ever that happens and I'm available help any way I can. Thanks for watching. 😁
Would love to see a video about the tax advantages of living in Washington vs Multnomah county
Sure thing, here ya go! th-cam.com/video/u1aIEV7an-o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=T93jwoyn8hVnkfGP
@@portlandoregonliving this is great! Thanks
Technically you still need to remit taxes on purchases made tax free. So if you buy the laptop in Oregon but live in a state that charges sales tax you are supposed to pay the "use tax" when you file. I am pretty sure very few people actually do this in practice however. Turbo tax asks this question on every return for states that have sales tax.
Helpful video. Could you describe allergy season(s) in Portland and does it bother you? thanks
Hey so during most of the year thru out the fall and winter the allergens in the air remain relatively low but come spring time and summer they can spike to be some of the highest in the country. It personally has never really bothered me that much that I've noticed, but I know people it affects quite a bit with the itchy eyes, scratchy throat, etc. So I'd say that if you're someone who's susceptible to allergies, to be prepared to find ways to comfortably remedy some symptoms. Thanks for watching!
