I love the tight around the room(s) shelf feel. Every room has plenty of area to move and an option for furniture. Since you are modeling Chicago and suburbs, maybe add in some dead diamonds to simulate other railroads (tracks come from the wall, cross over your mains and out towards the fascia). Watch a video on 21st street and 16th interlocking in Chicago where Metra, Amtrak and a host of other railroads meet to enter Union Station. Also, diamond interlockings can add some operations for mainline movement. Love the layout sir. I live in Chicago and work for the CN as a freight conductor for 24 years. Been on the Joliet Subdivision (Joliet to Union Station) many times and you cross over a dozen other railroads going back and forth. From Canal street, Cermak ave, 22nd street to 16th street is a spaghetti mess of diamonds and bridges into the heart of downtown.
I just learned ScaleTrains is finicky too. I’m adding some rerailers to my unitrack layout to help keep them going. A bit bummed about it, they look so good.
Exceptional work! I can’t wait for the next update!
My guess is you either "stole" the paint idea from wisco trains or seaboard central. Seabord central would be the original poster of the krylon camo soray paint.
Glad to see your back on track😂
I had the same issue you have with only limited time to work on my layout. I solved it by retiring 😁. You have the right idea though, just grab whatever time you can. Sometimes I just walk around my layout and look at it trying to see if there are some changes I could make that would improve the layout in the future
Glad you’re back!!
I've definitely found as well committing small amounts of time to the layout helps the progress! Every little bit helps chips away to the final product. Especially if it's the tedious, not so glamorous parts to get them out of the way to spend more time with the fun parts!
That is amazing.Thank you for sharing it🚂👍

You should prob get rid of the MP36s because they never prototypically ran on the UP lines
I just binged your entire series to date
Binging this...
I grew up in Fox River Grove. Im so excited i found this. Im too old now but i always wanted to model the CNW from Barrington to Crystal Lake in 1977ish.
That news story was great! I just purchased a book from Walthers, “Chicago and North Western - The Harvard Line: Chicago to Janesville “ by James E. Lewnard. I hope this covers the real subdivision you are modeling in fictionalized form.
Anyone have an idea where I can get some CNW dash 9 dummies? Can't find any. HO.
I worked CNW in the early 1970's and worked the West Chicago yard primarily, But ran freight from Proviso to Iowa, and lots of way freight jobs: Elgin, DeKalb, West Chicago. Ran passenger down from Harvard a few times. What an education for an extra-board brakeman. Love your layouts.
I love the "news report" but in your alternate universe, did Governor Pawlenty from MN back the new rail line? He wasn't a real big fan of passenger rail so if he changed his mind in your world, that would be great! 😄
I grew up in Woodstock on the UP Northwest line. This is a very cool project.
I took ties that were too thick (like the ones for insulated rail joiners) and ran them over some sand paper laid down with the grit up until they were thin enough to slip under the rail. It's one approach, LOL !
The intro to this was just fantastic. Awesome work
I have this idea sometime in the future to model N scale with a triple track main. Is it really time consuming basically having triple the track laying work? Are concrete tie flex track easy to find?
As I've said before, your story telling is terrific and now you've taken it to a whole new level with that news story. Very well done.
Man, your presentation style for this project is so awesome, in point of fact I'm a bit jealous someone managed to beat me to the punch on an alt-history CNW.
Plenty of other folks keeping other railroads alive on their layouts, we need more layouts where the CNW lives! The more the merrier!
@@cnwnscale For sure. I'm not going into the modern era on my layout (at least, not yet). I'm sticking to the mid 1980s, very close to the divergence point I created sometime in mid 1976. TL:DR, Northwestern management approaches the Western Pacific with a proposition to bridge the 300 mile gap between Lander, Wyoming at the far end of the Cowboy Line and WP's easternmost point at Salt Lake City, as well as refurbishing the Cowboy Line for higher traffic demands, and creating one of the shortest and possibly the fastest connection between the West Coast and Chicago (BN's Chicago-Seattle route is slightly shorter, but combined runs through the Rockies and Cascades are what lead me to this route being faster). This creates a traffic windfall for the CNW, and with a strong main line through Wyoming, when the Powder River coal boom hits in the mid 80s, CNW has the capability to extend trackage into the PRB on it's own and leads to CNW still being a major Class I into the modern day. I mostly came up with this as a justification to have some locomotives that CNW never had but theoretically could have. Things like the SD45-2, SD60M, GP60, and even CF7s through another alteration of the timeline but I'm rambling at this point.
Love the progress! I noticed that the CNW passenger locos have pantographs. Are you planning to install catenary?
Thanks! So in the backstory for the layout, the main event that allowed the CNW to stay an independent railroad was that it acquired the Milwaukee Road in 1964. In the layout world, the CNW electrified the entire Pacific Extension, which gave it a profitable way to run freight, particularly intermodal, from the Pacific to Chicago during the gas crisis of the 1970s. Because the Pacific Extension is electrified, they are exploring electrification in other divisions. When the CNW purchased 2nd hand equipment to start running the 400, it did so primarily form two agencies - Amtrak and from Exo (Montreal commuter rail). They acquired 2 ALP-45DPs that can run diesel or off the catenary to see if it'd be viable. For now, the CNW is sticking with the P42DC Genesis for the most part, but they haven't completely shut the door on that in the future.
So my tax dollars are going to pay for your rail line? Can't take any of your freight revenue to pay for it? Typical Illinois politics...your realism is on point.
As a history teacher, I'm going to make the backstory realistic, warts and all!
Got any CNW commuter cars?
I do have some of the Wheels of Time Pullman cars. I haven't run them since the layout is set in 2014, but it would be fun to have a legacy train that runs the line every now and then. I'll want to get an F unit to accompany that for sure
I have a Broadway Limited F7A in production right now. Its ready in January. Im an old disabled vet. Can't wait to start bench work @@cnwnscale
Nice , love the news reports, adds a bit of more realism and history to your layout. Where did you get the CNW autoracks, the only ones I could find are from Intermountain and they are on pre-order ?
They are the old Con-Cors, and I got very lucky and stumbled upon them in a posting on facebook a couple of years ago. They are not easy to find.
Nice work! It might be too late, but Atlas 55 ties fit under Peco 55 pretty well.
Hello Sir, Your new layout is coming along real good. Everytime I see your next chapter after watching the previous one I never get bored when you recap what you were working on in the chapter. It also helps me to understand what you are doing now and then you speed up the process and I try to stay caught up, but sometimes I have to go back a few minutes on the video and watch the segment again sometimes as much as 3 times to understand what you were talking about. Are you familiar with any N-Scale forums that I can go to for information about N-Scale? Please don't get me wrong I enjoy reading your comments especially when you respond back and explain to the person about the question at hand. I know you're a very busy person and believe me I appreciate everything you have answered for me so far, but I don't like to be a burden on people in the questions I need to ask. Sometimes I'll ask a question and not realizing it I just answered my own question. Of course I'm trying my best to understand what the person is trying to tell me about the answer to my question like for instance when you show the cars you received for Christmas or cars you ordered from your favorite place I pay attention to the different brands or companies your cars came from and I read about how different the rolling stock cars couplers are different and some people say that you should stay with one brand, because not all couplers are the same. Some could be body mount and I heard that there are some different types as well, but right now I don't know what they're called and it sometimes frustrating when at the moment I have no clue as to know what the heck I'm talking about. So I guess my question is Does it make any difference what car goes in whatever order to make a consist? While I'm asking you this question What exactly is a consist? I've heard that word used a lot since I started to get into model railroading, but I don't remember why I never asked that question or too look it up myself. Maybe I'm spelling and pronouncing the word wrong? I don't know. You see I just lost my train of thought about the question I was asking. I asked do you have to make up a list of cars in the yard or wherever you pickup the cars do the cars need to be from the same company like Atlas, Rapido,Kato or even MicroTrains to be hooked up together or not because each company has their own couplers? Are all N-Scale Companies using knuckle couplers on their cars? If a car doesn't have a knuckle coupler how do I know what brand and type of coupler to use so they can be compatible? I think I've bored you too much for now I'll try my best next time to make my comments and questions a little shorter so you won't get stressed out. I mean it whenever I have a question or a comment to always say "Thank you for your time " Sincerely Allan
Awesome update man! It was cool to see all the footage you got riding those passenger trains. I’m glad you got the wiring done and trains running! No better feeling then getting that done 😎
Check with otter valley railroad in tillsonburg Ontario, they have several cars that you’re looking for.
Hello Sir, Love your video especially when you incorporate both the flying and the train ride mixed in with the construction of your layout. If you don't mind me asking since you received the wrong track order and the company replaced it what are you going to do with the code 80 track? Can you incorporate the tracks on your layout? Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan
They provided a return shipping label and I sent it back in the packaging they delivered the correct code 55 in!
Nice layout your building…great feeling to reach that milestone…subbed👍🏽
Thanks for the sub!
Very nice work. Love seeing the Metra run. Having ridden the Metra for years and then seeing Kato's model, my layout began.
Nice update & great layout. Subbed🤙🏻
Thanks and welcome
Looks great
16:08 Originally that was a team track, now maintenance of way storage. Good place to show off any custom MOW equipment. Fun fact the MOW tracks at Arlington Park were built to store race day trains.
Thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it!
Congratulations on a huge milestone!!
Batrleship new jersey has pretty good youtube channel if youre interest in that stuff. Great update
Awesome update! One constructive criticism is the cab coach has both red trailing lights and white headlights on at the same time instead of one or the other. On the three Kato metra cab cars we own, we set up one for trailing, one for leading, and one for mid train service, just by chopping short the light routing optic inside the car. However you decide to do it…That is gonna make your awesome length train that much better!
Yeah for some reason the decoder in that cab car isn't playing nicely with the new digitrax system that I installed. It was one of my first purchases years ago, I need to get it fixed so the lights are running properly!
Well done. Great work.
Dear N Scale Chicago & North Western Harvard Sub, great vid on the progress you made on your layout. Very interesting footage you captured on your trip to Philly, as are the inspirational shots you interspersed for the different scenic sections. Love the way you explained the different aspects of the layout config. Great to see those trains run! Awesome shot of the lift down. Nifty construction, very much like that kind of approach. Looks very smooth and not at all to my surprise, because the hinge action is underneath the construction. Might be cool to lock the ‘bridge’ in place with an actual size turnout lock, just as a suggestion. Curious how you will design and construct the approach to the second deck. Think that bridge scene will be a great addition. Might be cool to make the swing bridge operational, even though it is a road bridge. Definitely looking forward to seeing your next episodes. Cheerio
First level looks great.
I’m modeling sort of the polar opposite end of the spectrum on the CNW from your layout (a Minnesota branch line in the 70’s), but love what you’re doing. N scale is great for just watching long trains go by.
Too bad you don’t have room to model a football field for the bears stadium
Maybe something in 2D like this: th-cam.com/video/HkEX99frRhU/w-d-xo.html ? Bear Down !!
It's definitely something to think about. The racetrack is on the room side, not the wall side, but no reason I can't flip it for layout purposes and do a wall flat to represent it!
@@cnwnscale yeah that would look cool!
Great update. Watching your channel has helped me decide on how I wanted to build my main layout. Planning on going with the Boone subdivision.
I have a long family history with CNW. Love watching your build,
Seeing that Metra train, reminded me of getting on it in Downers Grove to the Metro station downtown. Love the bridge! I kinda of hoped you would of done a video on the construction of that.
