Very cool! I'm SW side born and raised through college years (now in Sacratomato) so I can well appreciate your layout and the research going into it. My n scale modeling is very modest compared to yours (in my unheated garage but I am in California) but it includes elements of the Chicago loop out to the SW suburbs, former Blue Island oil refinery and into the forest preserves. I need to find a sound file for cicadas as they will be back next summer.
Loving your layout build !! Just wanted to mention Dubai Trains channel for his flip up door entry. I was thinking it would be a great addition to your removable pull out. You will not have to unplug your bus with his design.
There are! The challenge is that the north side is where the wall is on my layout. I'm tempted to "flip" the downtown to model some of the cool buildings - there's such a neat blend of different styles there.
It's getting to look more and more like a great model railroad. Keep up the wonderful work. Where did you get the backdrops from. They look great too !!!!!!😊
Unfortunately I don’t think Heller Lumber gets rail service anymore. I haven’t seen a lumber car there in at least a year and probably closer to two years.They also used to receive double door boxcars on occasion. 😢
That's what I saw in my research, too. But my layout is set 10 years in the past (so 2024 will be 2014 on the layout, etc), and in 2013 there was still a good amount of traffic. In 2017, Union Pacific even replaced tracks on the spur to maintain business. So for at least 5-6 years it will be an active customer on the line!

Wow! I don’t believe I’ve seen anyone tape and paint rails in n scale. That’s a lot of work, but it came out nice.
I hope you try to recreate the south side of the tracks in downtown Arlington heights. Lots of cool looking buildings there
