When I first got the call to come out to this site, which interestingly is called Honeydew, in Johannesburg South Africa, I ask the standard questions of where are the bees located and how long have they been there, which gives me an indication of the possible size of the colony.
The contact said the bees were in the other side of the box control box that he had not opened, which is a common location as you can see from some of my previous videos on bees in electrical boxes.
But in this case the bees were actually located in the brick work base below the box, we could see this by the activity of where they were entering and exiting, and we opened the door of the otherside which was empty.
The first challenge was for us to gain access to the nest which we decided to do by cutting open the brick work on the reverse of the stand.
Ideally I would have liked to use an impact chisel for this job but one was not available and so we used an angle grinder with a chisel and hammer to break open the cavity.
Once we had small opening the bees started to get active.
What we know from doing removals for sometime now, is the sooner you can get onto the nest the less active and aggressive the bees are.
Once the nest is revealed we can see the beautiful comb and bees and so we set to work with our bee vacuum to start the removal.
Working through the hole created is challenging but the nest is not huge even though the cavity actually goes quite far down under ground making the honeycomb at lease half a metre in length.
Suddenly the power goes off -
at first we thought it might be because of us fiddling below the electrical box, but the cables are all contained in a metal pipe, here in South Africa the utility company occasionally shuts of power for large areas, this is called loadshedding, as there is insufficient generation for the country.
But it was just a tripped mains, not sure of the reason as we could not see any bare cables anywhere and there was no reason for a short.
The cavity did not extend the full width of the box with a wall splitting it. This contained the bees in a small space and aided in allowing us to deal with them quickley.
Once we had all the comb and the bees safely out of the cavity we filled it with a product called fabufil. Because we do this even though a new swarm will sense a colony had been here before they will not choose this location as it no longer has the space to build in.
Right, off to the apiary.
This swarm is actually a bit bigger than we initially though and I think we have a good chance of them loving the new box and home we have relocated them to.

In the South African Autumn of 2023 all my hives on one of my sites had no bee brood. That means no new bees would be born in the next 21 days. Smoke boys smoke😅
Yeah. Had a comment on a previous video asking me why we use so much smoke. Thanks for commenting. 👍
Is that for your brood or suppers
Cut in half for supers. I have been doing the wave cut for brood. But think a full sheet is still better.
Well done guys Taking the brood of under the honey crown is good practice because then you don't get honey running over your brood and suffocating it You did well even with out your roatery drill
Thanks for watching. These are old removals. So still need to use your practice of the vac box under the brood box.
Day in the life of a South African beekeeper.
As dangerous as they can be, still love working with them. Thanks for watching.
Lovely study and grafics thank you. This is very similar to our summer and winter pattern in Germany, near the Alps. So I presume you are at altitude with cold winter nights. Was the new Brood development on the east (morning sun) or the West Side? What direction do you face your entrances? 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching. This Apiary is about 1000m above sea level and only goes to a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius, so it is not extremely high or cold. It is interesting that you talk about the sun direction as I am sure it has an impact on maintaining the warmth of the colony, I do see my hives that have sun early in the morning are most active from early but tend to be less active in the late afternoon. With this hive the entrance faces East, and in the apiary, the hives face various directions we consider shade and sun for the seasons when placing them. Summers can be very hot. Thanks for commenting and your support I am very interested in beekeepers from around the world and their practices.
Great video but why is the gentleman smoking the bees constantly
Thanks for watching. Our bees on this site in the lowveld in South Africa are pretty aggressive. We keep the smoker going to just keep the pheromones at bay and that way the bees are easier to work. The last short we posted shows how they can attack when not smoked sufficiently. Appreciate your comment. Thanks.
Thank you. This was a great video
Thanks for watching.
This is absolutely brilliant! I love the comparison showing the positive changes. Well done! #bees
Thanks for watching!
Eventually all the European bees in the Americas will be like this thanks to scientists and greedy people
I agree 100% with you, if humans mess with the natural world the natural world tends to bite back. There is one positive, we don't have to deal with varroa mites as the Scutellata Sub Species can manage these pests without the beekeeper having to intervene. Thanks for watching.
Bee-utiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Reminds me of the movie killer bees
Thanks for watching. People often ask why we work our bees at night and this is the reason.
Definitely not like those American bees that you see people move with their hands.
I would love to work with bees without having to wear gloves. But unfortunately, our bees would not allow that. Thanks for watching
Could see that nest was heavy trying to lift the lid
Did this one a while ago. Got a similar video coming soon of one we did just as winter was starting. It’s amazing to see how we have progressed with our removals. Thanks for watching and commenting.
awesome removal guys!
Thanks for watching!
We had this once several years ago. But the bees used the box for the night before moving on... I think they were moving the hive elsewhere. But they literally stayed for the night and were gone the next day
The scouts would have lead the swarm to your box, but there must have been somethings they were not happy with or the scouts returned with messages of a better location and they were still prepared to swarm.
Love it! 🐝⚡️
Thanks for watching!
Im currently doing the same thing with a hive left on a property I purchased. There is so much honey and the frames are so heavy I cant lift them and that's just the top box. I haven't been able to even get to the lower two boxes. Any advice? I will be getting my husband to help lift frames soon. Do you have any other videos of the progress? Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching, I think there were some videos after that one where we did hive maintenance. If I were to move these hives again from one location to another I would do it differently. First I would remove the honey supers and take them for harvesting, leaving them on during transport runs the risk of them breaking and also the honey already crystalizing because of the time it has spent in the nest. Then if the brood is a lot, I would use the opportunity of the move to create splits. As long as you have sufficient new eggs in each of the splits they will create new queens. This is what I would do now with what I have learnt in the last few years. Hope you find this helpful.
Wow - thought you'd fall off the ladder there @11min13.... get a pulley guys ... my heart!
Glad we could keep you on the edge... Thanks for watching!
I'm going to attempt this but I'm afraid
If you wear the correct protective Equipment you will be fine. If you are working with aggressive bees then rather work at night.
you guys are so cool!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Extremely informative and interesting video! :)
Thanks!
Brilliant. 🙌
Thanks for watching!
You didn't lose the hive to wax moths. There weren't enough bees so it's you who is to blame. You can take the absolute worst moth infestation frames and place them on a very strong hive and the frames will be like new in 3 days.
You are correct, so to fix the problem we boosted the bees in the hive by combining a weaker colony and also taking brood frames from a stronger colony. Thanks for watching.
I held my breath when he was taking the bee hive off the tree!!! I was worried Ethan would fall off lol. Fun to watch though and loved my visit beekeeping with you two. My local association has asked for me to talk at the next meeting about beekeeping in South Africa. :) thanks so much for the great experience!!

Hey Melissa, thanks for visiting us when you were in South Africa. Hope you had a great trip.
I love this. Thank-you. 🐝
Thanks for watching. ❤
Lemon grass works fine but when used sparingly. And it repels wax moths. Just a dab. Nice to hear about your journey.
Thanks for watching. For those to learn from, how small amount of lemon grass should you use. I dabbed the end of a Q-Tip and it seemed to repel the bees.
@@BeeSanctuary sir I wonder if you've got a much stronger lemongrass oil than we have here. I put one drop on the back of an internal frame, (towards the rear). When I drop on my finger and just rub around the forward entrance hole. A tip I got from a master swarm catcher, be sure to put your storm trap on the crest of the hill if at all possible. That way the scent travels. Enjoyed your channel!
Thanks for sharing. Some great tips there for everyone.
Why are you beekeeping in the dark?
The bees we are working with are not always but can be very aggressive and we take the necessary precautions to ensure the people and pets in the area are not in any danger. By working in the dark we are able to control the bees with lights and smoke. Thanks for watching.
Awesome! Looking forwards to more
Awesome, thank you!

Do you work all your hives at night ?
Hi live in Barbados. How can you tell African bee from other
Thank you for watching and thanks for the question. So it is pretty difficult to tell the difference between the African bee and the other bee species. These are some of the differences I am aware of. African honeybees are generally a little smaller than European bees. They tend to be more aggressive and will chase threats long distances. African bees swarm more frequently than European bees. They also develop slightly quicker than European bees, particularly in the worker and queen castes. This faster development can contribute to their more aggressive swarming behaviour and rapid colony growth. Hope this is valuable info for you.
❤Never see it bevore
Thanks for watching.
I like the way you set up your videos, with the pop in frames, gonna have to give that a try , makes for a great video.👍
Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
Awesome video, it's always interesting to hear from African beekeepers. I don't think there isn't a new beekeeper world wide that hasn't overdone having a look😅 I'm helping a new hobbyist at the moment who contacted me two weeks ago at the end of May and he hasn't been in his hives since January 😂 and now it's button down time here so I'm hoping they'll make it till August when it's warm enough to sneak a look. I think the Queen excluder issues you were having may be only related to African honeybees, I know a lot of American beekeepers in both lower north and south america love working with the "Africanized honeybee" but they're different to manage from Italians, European darks and Carnolians (I'm in central Otago southern New Zealand, those are the three main varieties we have) my understanding is they like to be unrestricted in the hive, so if you've found the Queen excluder is a nuisance then absolutely ditch it. Personally, I love Queen excluders but I run double deep brood chambers. Freezing your frames for 48 hours in a freezer will kill any wax moth eggs or hatched larvae on your honey frames when you pull your supers, but if you can it's always best to extract sooner rather than later. We have both kinds here too, I've never personally had an issue with them, but central Otago is very cold in winter and dry and hot in summer, so perhaps they're not as prevalent here for that reason. Most of our population lives on the east coast of the south Island or in the North Island, where it's much more humid and warmer in winter, cooler in summer. Great video 👍
Thank you for sharing. This was so interesting to read, I love hearing about the differences around the world. We have differing opinions here in South Africa too, they say to ask 100 beekeepers a question and you will get 100 different answers. At the end of the day, we can all learn from each other and I particularly like trying new things. Thank you for your support.
That was great. Best wishes from the UK😊

What is meant by "resource frames" please?
We refer to frames that are filled with nectar, honey and pollen as resource frames. Generally it is frames that contain food the bees will be using to survive. Thanks for watching.

Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
My kids want to know what 'brood' is?
Bees go through the same lifecycle as butterflies. First as an egg, then larvae, the cell is capped when the larvae are big enough and can pupate into a bee. The period where they go from a larvae to a bee is what we call brood. Here is an interesting video on this subject. th-cam.com/video/N7Nd4Ll1rYs/w-d-xo.html
@@BeeSanctuary interesting… thanks!

Thanks for watching! Appreciate you.
Looks like a young queen 2m18' scurrying up the left side?
Thanks for watching. I don’t think tat was her. We did see her a few minutes later on the right. But the camera was not on her.
Hi, really useful tips you have suggested here. I am currently attempting a trap out. I think I have successfully eliminated all other entrances as the swarm is now using their new entrance. In your experience what is the success rate in persuading the queen out into her new nuc box? Cheers Guy
I have only once had a trap out where the queen did not come out. It was a chimney and we struggled to close all the holes and we left the box up on the chimney for way too long. If you have correctly set up the trap it will work 100% of the time.
Thanks for the reply. I will check it out in a week or two and see how things are progressing inside my nuc here on the Isle of Wight.
@@guymattinson2513 Give it 28 days and you should be good. Best of luck.
Thanks for pointing out the ecological role of the wax moth, I had not thought about that before.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you!! I got a question what if i dont cut lines for the wires and instead just push the comb softly to the wires would that work?
It works if the comb is soft enough. But most of the time the comb is quite tough or brittle. Cutting allows us to get it exactly in the center of the frame which is the important part. Thanks for watching.
I made a bee vacuum based on your design and it worked perfectly! Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful! We have been using ours for 5 years now and only had to replace the rubber seals a few times.
Great content, fantastic footage. Jeys fluid and moth balls also a good deterrent.
Thanks for watching. Your recommendation does work, but you have to regularly treat otherwise time passes and you have bees again. However, these are good recommendations for cavities that are practically difficult to fill.
Nice work guys thats environmental stewardship,, Iam also a beekeeper looking for a bee vacuum to do sustainable bee removal without killing any bees do you know where i can find one
We built this one ourselves, you can see how in this video th-cam.com/video/9D8pu553Ebs/w-d-xo.html
I also lost bees to moth in cement hive . entrance to big for smaller swarms ?
Yeah, we struggled with the small swarms we placed in the bunker hives. Based on this experience place a nuc on top of the bunker hive with the small swarm and then later when they are stronger you can move the frames into the bunker hive.
