    Thank you for your video, and clear speaking and idea layout. I thought I would feel sad after watching this from the title, but I just finished a degree recently called Spatial Data Science. I have no job. It's a huge bummer. It's hard to keep up my skills while I apply and get rejected. I hear what you are saying, and how programming languages should help, and having a niche should help. I wonder if you could at all influence the people over there at USA jobs who create the job categories. What I might be just realizing after months (or a year) of getting rejections from these job applications, is that even with a graduate degree in GIS/Spatial Data Science/Geography, they might not by default consider that you have had all of the other math and statistics prerequisites in your undergrad... but it's not true! I have been making that assumption. I am only now starting to realize that with an engineering background, I have more technical skills than many actual "GIS Analysts" and "GIS Technicians" who seem to be using a lot of plug and play dashboard and web map stuff, but I think the novelty of the newer degree title "Spatial Data Science" is a turnoff, even if it is actually a subset of Geography! It's unfamiliar, and it doesn't fit into the USA jobs categories. Well, phew... I appreciate you doing the thought experiments on things geospatial, and I'll probably watch more of your vids in the future.

    As a GIS professional for around 18 years, I am starting to see the salaries in my area for entry and mid level GIS job positions be much lower and not as desirable as other professional career paths. I am not as easily recommending GIS careers unless it is something that is a passion or enjoyable type of job for a person. I enjoy GIS and find it fulfilling but I am also planning for a future in an alternate career path as I see ceilings with my current trajectory.

    Well, ESRI especially (ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Story Map) it was a game changer in GIS for me. In current t specific aspects in USA market, most govs departments are integrated by ESRI system - and don’t have any restrictions, so I have full access to public resources. Many clients, ask me for data that is integrated there - my first search browser is ArcGIS online. Another thing you don't have to pay attention for security, versions, data formats, and service optimizations or maintenance systems. Yes, open source is good, especially for local data storage. If you want to go to the web with stored hundred GB of your own datasets and you have a team with IT members (Frontend desktop/mobile, Backend, Admin, and Database) who provide all things for you, open-source is for you. Because in this case, ESRI might be pretty expensive - it always depends. If you are working solo or small team - I definitely recommend ESRI system - because you avoid many other time costs, to provide a great safe ecosystem to provide content to publish into good possibilities by many ESRI apps.

    I agree that those who think ChatGPT and AI can replace people aren't thinking right. Way back they said the same thing about the internet as well. It isn't that these tools will replace people, it is that these tools will help people work more better and make life easy. I use ChatGPT to write PyQGIS codes. From the simplest task like loading 53 layers from a folder into QGIS to clipping network assets based on certain criteria. While plugins are great, PyQGIS just does the batch work easily and also saves the layers in folders as you want them. I owe ChatGPT for making my life easy and allowing me to stick to the strict deadlines I often have in my line of work. On a side note, co-pilot I find writes codes better than ChatGPT, and I don't know why. Anyone experienced the same thing?

    I think typing in Python would solve >80% of my problems. I've got some major refactoring coming my way one day. Most of the arcpy issues I've ever had relate to data types being incorrect during coercion into C for the gp ArcObjects tools to run (for anyone getting into programming, especially Python, forcing a hard requirement for a correct data type means that you catch a problem a lot earlier and more explicitly, so you're not hunting through code wondering where something came from and why it's not working).

    I used to teach students using ArcGIS and QGIS, side-by-side, because we thought it was important for our students to learn GIS concepts while being as software agnostic as possible. Unfortunately, our college students spent way too much time cross-walking between the two platforms (juggling both the idiosyncrasies and the jargons) at the expense of the quality times on task needed to develop working cartography and spatial thinking skills. We quickly realized our idea was likely a good andragogic approach (a good way to teach adult learners), but a poor pedagogic approach (a bad way to nurture still-developing college students). So, we consulted our advisory board and shifted to Esri, which also holds the conspicuous market advantage in our region. When we started using drones, circa 2014, and the specialized softwares that go with, we felt much better about our shift into the Esri ecosystem. Yes, Esri isn't perfect and, yes, QGIS is a wonderful open-source alternative, but, in our case, we learned how to leverage the Esri ecosystem for better pedagogy (and better employment potential in our region), and we learned how to rely on other geotechnologies (UAVs, GNSS, GPR, etc.) to help us expose our students to other spatial thinking environments.

    The biggest point is that ESRI has an integration between ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online AGOL. You pay money for the Feature services and the ability to publish maps online. With QGIS, you must set up the infrastructure yourself with cloud (PostGIS, networking, etc.), which is cumbersome; also, creating your own HTML map. You do save money. Unless you are spending for ESRI Enterprise or AGOL, I don't think it is worth it.

    I think something that's difficult with modern GIS software is cartography. It's definitely gotten better in ArcPro than what it used to be but making beautiful maps requires you use other software such as Illustrator. Open source options exist with programs such as Inkscape which are helpful but it would be nice to keep everything in one program

    • @MattForrest
      @MattForrest 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Something that has really shocked me coming into the GIS world from UX design is just how bad the UX is in most GIS software. The amount of basic UX issues in ArcGIS Pro constantly blows my mind, but all I hear back from my professors is "ArcMap was so much worse". Every activity I have tried to do in ArcGIS Pro so far has been clunky and frustrating: spatial data analysis, map layout, design, etc. I struggle to think of a single user type that is well served by the software. I'm also shocked at how laggy and slow the software is, despite having maxed out the ESRI recommended specs on my desktop. It feels like bloated legacy software from a company stuck in the early 2000s. And then I found out how much a license costs! I'd contrast ESRI with Adobe. In the design space Adobe is the market leader, offering professional tools at a relatively high price. They have complex user needs and functionality, and yet they manage to make software that is user-friendly (albeit with a steep learning curve). QGIS is similarly clunky, but at least it's free, cross-platform, and open-source. Can't wait to finish my studies and hopefully not have to engage with ESRI again🤞
