Absolutely agree with everything you've said here. I feel the best approach is to use open standards for data and not necessarily only open source or only proprietary tools. That way you aren't locked into any one tool and can always use the best tool for the job.

I just found this channel maybe two days ago. And, I found this super useful. A proper guideline for me as a beginner. Really helpful & informative.

Traditionally educated GIS practitioner here. When I started in GIS, all I knew was ESRI and ArcGIS Pro. Some time passed, and I started getting active on LinkedIn. It was then that I was introduced to the concept of Open Source GIS. Along with that introduction came the impression of a Great Divide between the two. Seeing some of the "open-source gurus", I experienced a strong fear of missing out (FOMO), as if the traditional education I received was somehow less valuable because I wasn't "in the know".
I appreciate your perspective of Better Together (06:11) in addition to all the other GIS content you've put out there.
    Great breakdown of the topic.
We are better together. Use the right tool for the job. Share - and Celebrate - new ideas.
    That is the way forward.

With the current advancements in analytics and modelling, and Geospatial systems. Are we (and can we) able to create digital twins of a phenomena to solve problems in Disaster management(flood/ landslide etc). And is this possible with open-source tools?

    Hello Matt,
great ideas and views about traditional GIS and modern gis. I work in the GIS industry since 2007 and since that time, the struggle and discussion about the 2 worlds take place. Actual I work with tools and concepts from the 2 worlds and can feel and experience whats going on. I would like to write a longer post with possible solutions or ideas ! Not to try to bring the 2 worlds together ! but to profit and collaborate from the 2 worlds. Which approach should I take? Which Tool should you learn? Which basic knowledge you need?
And I remember always one thing. The Output or delivery of a GIS. (Map, statistics, web map, and much more).
    Thanks
    Holm

I think try and focus on problem solving and use the tools that work best! That’s usually the approach I see win out!
