Matt, so awesome to see all this finally come together; super stoked you got use out of the dataset! 🙌🏼 Very interesting about the demand for Excel vs. Python; I think you are on to something with it shifting in the future! Thanks for the shoutout 🎉
As a Data Science master's holder (working too on a grad Stats certificate), I am interested in the application of Statistics & Machine Learning to geospatial data. It only makes sense that Python and SQL are important in that field. What's surprising about the results of this vid is the relative unimportance of what Data Scientists bring to the table, that is, higher level mathematical skills for description, inference and prediction. This is the niche that interests me, Geospatial Data Science which calls for knowing Stats and ML.
There definitely is an application there in spatial data science. It’s still growing and on the true applied data science side like you mention there is demand although sometimes the title can broadly apply to geospatial analytics with Python which makes it hard to differentiate between the roles.
Thinking going into Agroforestry, GIS tools , SQL, python projects while learning the domain knowledge. I’m liking this more and more everyday . Thanks ! 🙏🏼
I have no degree, some college classes, but mostly self-taught. Telecom has always traditionally been CAD based maps. But that is transitioning. I got in right as the company I work for was transitioning, they did not care about the lack of a degree, they cared more about the fact I knew even what GIS is. Problem is, if I get laid off for some reason, I'm kinda screwed.
Very interesting video. It would also be interesting to see global trends in GIS technology and country by country popularity of the profession. I know it's a big piece of work, but I was a bit shocked by the number of offers in the US 😅.
Hey Matt! Big fan, another great video. Great work on the analysis. Just wanted to jump in and agree with a previous comment that it does come off as slightly disingenuous to not name ESRI or ArcGIS specifically by name. I am a huge open-source fan/advocate and would love the GIS community to become more holistic in its software usage, but not naming the currently most widely used GIS platform is a lil odd. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into your videos and content!
@ericsamson731 You say, "It does come off as slightly disingenuous to NOT name ESRI or ArcGIS specifically by name." I'm not against ESRI and don't think that it has to be an "either - or" decision when it comes to FOSS4G and proprietary. In fact, I'm incredibly grateful for the fact that I probably wouldn't have studied GIS if it weren't for them. But I think times change and they already have enough videos shouting out for them.
Hey so the main reason I don’t is that I haven’t used Esri tools since college so I don’t have the experience to speak to them apart from broad strokes. Of course they play a large role in GIS but the reason I started making these videos was that I didn’t see any content that spoke to the experience I have had in the industry and that seemed like a big gap.
Hi Matt, I have just started watching your videos, you are clear and they are good. But you need to get a better mic or edit your voice to be louder, because I have to rise my volume level to max just to hear you but your ads are blowing my eardrums.
Hi Matt, thanks for the instructive video. I have a master's in GIS but never worked in the field since graduated in 2018. What would be your recommendation if I wanna shift back to be a geospatial data analyst ?
I would start by building some portfolio projects to work on your skills and focus on areas you might want to work in. Then start to reach out to others on LinkedIn and share your work with them and on your public profile.
I am a 35G in the army. I am just starting out, but so far, I have loved this field. What would you recommend as someone just starting out into this field.
Thank you very much Matt, glad I found your channel, I have a degree in Geology and currently looking at going into GIS, can you help were to start from.
Thanks for this video! I want to switch my career field to GIS, can you please advise is taking an entry level job after certification in GIS is better or going for a masters or diploma is better? Also, if you can provide any source of learning or guidance related is GIS.
I would try and get some career experience and maybe they might even pay for part of your masters. And check out my other videos, but working on a course myself too!
For the records that had salary information, did you do a query on which states and/or localities had said data? The salaries sound kind of high to me, and they don't really pass the smell test. I have to wonder if places with salary transparency laws, like California, might also happen to have a high cost-of-living, which will skew the salary data.
Thanks Matt, amazing analysis 😊. I was wondering if you know any sort of space where to practice Python spatial projects. I'm a Data Scientist that wants to transition into Spatial Data Science, but I find it a bit difficult to find sandboxes such as Kaggle to practice with Spatial Data. Thanks in advance! 💚💚
So I would check out some of the resources on my site, particularly this one - forrest.nyc/75-geospatial-python-and-spatial-data-science-resources-and-guides/ There are some free courses like this one - geographicdata.science/book/intro.html - that allow you to run through some tutorials and then you can adapt those to a portfolio project.

I think that more and more of the generative AI models, instead of being trained on EVERYTHING like ChatGPT is, will be applied to specific use cases and data. So think about a project you are working on, what if your user could ask a question of your data just like ChatGPT? A database is a great place to store this data to train a model for a use case just like this.

Hii sir iam from india iam postgraduate in geography. I would like to do gis base course in abroad.. which country should i choose. In gis is there any further branch. If so which should i choose. Kindly please reply
How can you have an honest video about job skills for GIS and never use the terms ArcGIS or ESRI? The vast majority of geospatial jobs I've seen mention ArcGIS specifically. I'm starting to suspect this channel is just a shill for the company he works for and is probably being funded by CARTO.
So those tools you mentioned are bucketed into the "Traditional GIS" category you see in the video, regardless of who makes them. And as you can see that is still the top category in the analysis results! And no, all opinions are my own!
Hi Matt, another great video! As I've said, you're one of the only channels doing modern GIS, and I'm loving it! 🧑🎤
That means a lot I really appreciate it!

Thanks for all the data and the pipeline! Hoping to continue to take it further and automate it a bit more too!

Data analysis jobs should be given to people with data analysis skills, unfortunately that is not the real world.
Completing my BSc Geosciences this year, considering studying further in GIS, very helpful video. So excited for the future

Im coming from an RF background where I made maps showing RF propagation. Have you seen anything related to that in the GIS world?

Ok, I have to ask, you clearly have no lenses in those glasses, so why the glasses?
When I was using my phone to film there was a crazy glare so I just used those since I wear glasses anyways - tried to keep it consistent 🤷♂️
You literally remind me of data, beam me up. ⬆️
Hi Matt, how about Geospatial Data Scientist jobs.
BTW, thanks for this valuable content you made and shared.
I think there are some data points on that in the jobs report

Please activate translaction
They should be live soon it takes TH-cam some time to process the whole video!
What did you write in search when showing us the education part
Which part were you referencing? The degree data was from the listings itself.
what is difference between gis specialist analyst and technician?
Analyst - working with the data
Technician - technical systems and operations
Specialist - generally consultants working to implement GIS for a customer

Check out SpatialNode
How about in Indonesia?
a little late to ask but can i get a job as a GIS analyst or GIS related job without a degree?
thanks
Yes it is possible! There are some great online programs these days.
Hi Matt Forrest, I would like to know if these companies hire people from other countries?
Yes I would check out some of the remote jobs in places like Upwork, or for spatial specific jobs check out www.spatialnode.net/
