Great video, it helped me understand the mechanics of what’s been going on with my 2015 TLX SH-AWD. A few years after purchasing the vehicle on occasion while stopped at a stoplight the car would stall when trying to restart. Then, I started hearing clicking sounds coming from the engine. When I took the vehicle to the dealer, they found metal shaving in the rod bearing # 6 and had to replace the block which took around a month to complete. Then last year Honda sent me a recall for an inspection of the repair.
I don't even want to know what they pay you for warranty time on that, I'm sure it's supremely depressing. I love the upside down timing belt installation. Also, I'd be adding a dab of hondabond to each of the crankshaft bolts that go through the block so they don't leak oil in 100k miles like every f'n J series on the road...
Please. Put your goggles On! :)
Super light weight oil ..0W-20
What would the cost have been if you just kept it well maintained with out the mods?
Great stuff, as always! Oh, and no, you know you won't see this customer for the TB change at 105K miles :D
hi... have you heard about the screws coming loose on the ims? and do you plan on doing it
2015 MDX with the same exact issue SMH waiting on Honda to reply! Not even 140k miles 😢
Just had a new engine in my 2016 Pilot..short block and heads put in under this recall....interesting they didn't have/ do a long block. The funny thing is that the engine was essentially replaced but the old spark plugs were put in the new engine.
Do you or anybody in the chat know a good manufacture of these pistons and pistons rings that is NOT Honda/Acura? Also, do you recommend doing the bearings? I really want to tackle this and stop spending money on oil and catalytic converters.
Would Valv restore and protect oil work to help those rings?
Nope. I've tried soaking entire pistons in solvents like Seafoam, 44k, gasoline, brake cleaner and other caustic solutions for days. Nothing works to free them up.
What they do with the Core?
Paperweight.
Xavier - do you mind sharing fender opening heights from your current ride height and alignment? I finally got my BBS e88’s and need to adjust ride height.
Great Video/videos.... My 2017 Honda Accord Touring has the Multi-Point Fuel injection and is not subject to this recall, at least not yet. Do you have any Insite on why this is only for Direct injected V6 engines? The cranks are different, or come from a different factory?
Can't say why your car isn't subject to the recall yet. However, the NHTSA is investigating 1.4 million Honda's for the potential of engine failure. The cranks were improperly manufactured and variances in the crank journals lead to premature bearing failures.
Great job, what is changed to correct this problem, Synthetic Oil?
My neighbor has a 997.2 I changed the water pump on, I call it an Expensive Adult Go Cart. Really like the Carbon seats. He's non Turbo but drives it like it is. Be safe out there... Looks like fun.
Great information for a consumer, like me, shopping for a used MDX. Exactly, what I needed to know before making a decision. Even Honda isn’t impervious to mistakes.
Customer declined WP, with only one hr. labor charge, engine fully open, OMG
NP at all, as it is a light tap, of a rubber mallet.
A sad time in the auto industry in general, mostly I feel is due to CARB, overreach and CAFE standards, making engines overly complex, and less reliable. Still, this is a black eye for Honda, this and the 1.5 turbo problems. Still, for Honda, historically known for engines, this is egregious.
@@BigEightiesNewWave definitely agree with you on the overreach of CARB & the EPA causing manufactures to take measures they know will compromise longevity and reliability in the sake of fuel economy standards set by the governing bodies. As far as HMC goes, I believe that they are currently making all the wrong steps and will ultimately hurt them down the road. This recall alone will cost them billions for the years to come. They had a failed partnership with GM and bought their tech to get a foot in the EV game (extremely late). Sales on prologue and ZDX are dismal, and so we can chalk that up to another loss. Now, they’re looking at business ventures with Nissan… which will also be a failure and a waste of money. This recall, the 1.5 turbo engines that you mention along with a list of other recalls coming out proves that fundamentals of the company have drastically changed. They no longer make fun, reliable and affordable cars. Now pair that with poor leadership and very poor business decisions and you get quite the dumpster fire. Not all is bad though; HMC stock price is down more than 20% YTD… and I don’t see it going up at all for the quarters to come. Lots of selling pressure on the stock. I have short positions that will continue to print $.
New sub lets goooo
I’ve heard you say in a couple of videos that you wouldn’t want a car that had the crank replaced. Why?
@@shakey2634 Because I view it as the cheapest possible repair issued by Honda so that they can avoid bankruptcy. It is by no means a good repair and a far stretch of what any Technician or Engineer would consider “proper”. It’s quite literally a bandaid put over a broken spine.
@ If the problem is the crank, how is it a bandaid to replace it. It would then be proper. If they had a blanket policy of “we are only replacing bearings” when we know the problem is the crank, that seems to me to be a bandaid. If we can replace other parts (water pump, fuel pump, ecu etc) and consider it a proper repair, why not a crank? I guess that’s really my question.
@ because replacing a crank under normal and proper engine assembly procedure requires you to do a lot more than just… swapping it. Clearances, tolerances and precise measurements are supposed to be done during assembly which ensures longevity.
@ Thanks for the quick reply! Happy Holidays!
You would think they would have you check the bearing clearances!
@NSXavier997 What do you think about the 2022-2024 Mdx, have been looking at those but now concerned.
Superb, informative video. Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge.
super garage bien penser😉
Very good explanation And information
i wonder if this recall from dealership or repair can get rid of the nature of issue coming back, since i am actually think of getting one 2020 tlx with this V6 enigne
Only way imo is if you get one with the engine replaced with the updated internals.. just replacing the bearings is a Band-Aid fix that wont be permanent.
Bullshit repair. Honda should do the right thing and install new short blocks at min.
Would you still stray away from them if you knew the entire engine had been replaced? My friend is interested in one that has the recall done with whole engine replacement.
Yea I'd be OK with buying one with a replacement engine. The only ones I would absolutely not buy or want to continue owning are the ones with crankshafts that have been replaced.
Thank you Soo much for sharing. Had this done on my 2019 MDX tech. Soo detailed on the Rod bearings. Still waiting for the fuel pump recall
Talked to my dealer about the fuel pump recalled for my 2019 Ridgeline. They claimed they ordered the pump last week, 12.18,24. He said he will call me when the part arrives. Received the recall notice early 2024. Not holding my breath. I am done with the Honda brand. My 2019 Ridgeline has had too many recalls for me. God knows what the next recall will be for this brand. Our 1997 Honda Accord and 2009 CRV are still running like a champ. newer model Honda cars and trucks are a big question mark in longevity.
Can't Believe Honda went back to that stupid timing belt. Thanks for the video. i now Know what not to buy. Fuck Honda.
So much for a reliable brand, Thank for the info. I wish you would have shown us all the flat rod bearings you took out. I've rebuilt a few engines with a Ford 5.0l V8 just last summer , so i know what i'm looking at. I now drive a 2024 Honda passport as a loaner and it has that infamous J35 , 3.5L V6 engine , So far only 7k miles on it. I got this as a loaner due to My CR-V being recalled for rust on Rear frame rails where lower control arm attaches. They broke the FWD bolt trying to install the reinforcement plates. 07 model. So my car still sits at the dealer and waiting on Honda's decision since July and i'm I'm driving a potential lemon, Great.
Another impressive video/workmanship. I started watching your videos recently after the news that Honda may expand the 3.5 engine recall. We have a 2020 Pilot with about 85k on it. It's been reliable and I've been meticulous on maintenance, (oil changes every 5k). I'm now considering selling/trading in on something else. I'm not real impressed with Mother Honda's "fix" for this issue. In my opinion, they should be installing NEW, complete crate engines. Keep up the great work!
@@richtaylor266 I’d at least have the dealership do the rod bearing inspection recall on your pilot. If it’s just a bearing replacement then you’re good…. But if it needs a crank then yea I’d say trade it in afterwards. These engines are reliable.. it’s just that some of them had faulty crankshafts installed. Agree with you that the procedure for crankshaft replacement shouldn’t even be a thing and should just go straight to long block replacement if any bearings are found to be compromised.
@@NSXavier997 Thanks for the advice man!
Impressive work! I'm surprised Mother Honda only replaces the shortblock. I would think anything that had contaminated oil run through it, would need replaced or at a minimum, taken completely apart and thoroughly cleaned.
@@richtaylor266 thanks! this is an old video. They updated the repair procedure which is the suck. Check out my other videos which outline them! Thanks for watching!
So how long is the vehicle in for repair for this recall? If you have to send the bearings to HOA for inspection, I imagine it could be weeks??
Honda inspects the bearings electronically. They have us take photos of them and based on their findings determines the corrective action. If it's just bearings replacement then the car can be in and out in a day. If it's a crankshaft replacement then probably a couple days down. Same if an engine needs to be replaced. The problem is that there are so many cars affected that we cant get them in fast enough so customers are booked out for months.
Excellent and informative video... My 2018 TLX A-Spec is in today for the rod bearing replacement. This really helped me understand what is going on.
wish you have time to make a fly by or drive away video from the outside, so we can hear this beast really scream😊
Can you please tell me that the crankshafts and short blocks on engines modifications J35Z and J35Y are the same?
Completely different short blocks and components. J35Z is part# 10002-RK1-A11 J35Y is part# 10002-5J6-A12. J35Z's don't fail in epic fashion the way J35Y's do.
@@NSXavier997I see that they look the same externally. The crankshaft journal sizes, judging by the specifications on the Internet, are the same. I wonder if the gaskets and liners from the Z modification will fit on the Y? We have a problem finding spare parts for the Y modification. The Z engine is more common because it was installed on the Honda Pilot, which is more popular here than the Acura.
My question is, just replacing the crank in this manner, how can you be sure of oil clearance in the rod bearings? Is there a way to check without removing the pistons and rods and using a micrometer to ensure the crank journals and the bearings have adequate clearance or too much clearance. I saw you are a master tech, and I am not doubting your skills or abilities
@@robertsise7898 yes ideally you would want to mic the crank journals and then plastiguage everything to ensure it is all within tolerance. However, Honda doesn’t require to do this and are treating this like a brake pad slap to keep costs down.
There are many J35 series nomenclature. My 2011 TSX v6 was built in Japan. I have never heard of this problem or recall.
This only affects GDI J35 engines. Your TSX V6 is port injection.
Thank you for the helpful video, just wondering what is your up to date alignment spec?
There is a huge difference between 100 thousand ,,, Hondas has 1.4 millions Huge diferent

THANK YOU for a super interesting video. Your explanations are top notch, easy to understand. Once again, I was glued to the screen 'til the end.
Would love a video on the boost gauge and install! Even if that means having to uninstall and re do it :)
How many hours does Honda pay techs for this?
@@droboyjr 9 bro. 9. Hours.
@nsxavier997 I’m a toyota tech and imo that’s just not enough but am I surprised? absolutely not. I’m curious about your opinion on it. Now, just like any job, once you do a few I’m sure you get faster and faster but I know what’s involved to get to that point of crank replacement and it’s a good bit. Drain oil, coolant, evac AC, drop subframe with engine, disconnect wire harness, separate trans with tc, etc. etc. etc. That’s a lot of damn work not to mention reinstallation and you can’t really afford to make any serious mistakes. 9 hours is kinda BS imo. I respect your work though 👍 Somebody has to lol.
@@droboyjr ayyyeee… fellow tech 🫡. My opinion on it is that Honda is going to going to continue to cut warranty labor times to avoid bankruptcy and insolvency.. but that is inevitable without a miracle. 1.4 million cars affected with this recall and on the low end they’re paying out approximately $1,200 for the repair. That’s over 1.4b dollars they’re paying to fix this mess. No matter how much money they make on new car sales, parts sales, and whatever other sectors they’re involved with will not recover the losses on this. Nobody sees this now. Wait till the street gets wind of their earnings report for Q4 2024.. that’s going to be bloody. Their stock price is already -16% YTD. Once investor confidence declines… there goes their cash flow. Technicians will always be good though. It’s not like we’re growing on trees. The way I see it is sure, short change us now and our pleasure will be witnessing the decline and downfall of what once was an awesome company.
Fantastically interesting video. Thank you for this and for explaining it so well; you should be a top level mechanics teacher for an auto manufacturer. I'm just a DIYer, but I was riveted to the screen for the entire video. THANK YOU.
@@frankobermaier3440 I really appreciate it! Check out my other follow up video which shows crankshaft replacement if you’d like!
Sounds great, almost NA sorta sound. I'm seriously thinking about selling my M3 for one of these. How does it feel in the corners? Good handling balance? Front end pointy or under-steery?
Ot: on my 997.1 turbo I was going to pull my two vvt solenoids and test and clean them but wanted to ask b4 how die I remove the metal zip zag shaped retaining clips holding the electrical connector or the solenoid? Pull, push down then pull etc? Don’t want to break something. Thanks for any help.
No worries. The old style OBD connectors you mentioned come off pretty easily. Just push the metal retainer inwards and pull.
@ wow ok push in and then pull. I’ve broke a few plastic ones on my s550 and didn’t want to be an issue on the 997 or fight it cause it’s kinda tight to get in there. Thank you for letting know. Enjoy your holiday season. Cheers
@ sorry one last ? B4 I try. Can I pull these VVTS by just removing the Y pipe & air box or does the engine need to be lowered? Thanks again.
@@NSXavier997 I was able to get them out and clean them. Very tight and didn’t have the ideal tools but got them N&Out. Drivers side was about a 7 out of 10 and cleaned up nice the passenger side was more thick & gummed up like a 5 out of 10. Very glad I did it. ‘07 turbo tip with 38K miles. Cheers
