Buying a house in Italy
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ม.ค. 2022
Yep, I'm buying a house in Italy completely remotely, in an area of Italy I've NEVER been to and without ever seeing it! Crazy?! You be the judge. Follow along to see how it turns out.
G'day I'm Tegan and during the pandemic I came across a video on TH-cam (of course...what else was there to do during lockdowns) about buying a 1 euro home in Italy. Many videos later, and having always dreamed of owning an Italian villa (I blame Under The Tuscan Sun), I decided I wanted to purchase a property in Italy. Problem was, I was stuck in Mexico at the time due to the pandemic. So, I decided to do it remotely.
This is my journey from the idea of buying a house in Italy, searching for the ideal Italian property, purchasing my Italian home, and then the "fun" process of renovating a house in Italy.
I don't speak Italian, I don't know the area, or even where the nearest supermarket is, and I've never renovated a house before...So this could be interesting! Come along for the ride!

Seeing my house in Italy for the first time
Does the house in Italy I bought online exist? It's time to fly there and find out. Fingers crossed! In this video I take you on the journey of flying all the way to Italy from Australia via Singapore and arriving in Salento, Puglia Italy.
Driving through the historic town of Galatina for the first time and seeing all the beautiful architecture I had only partially seen on Google. Then it's, drop the bags at the BnB and go find my Italian house.
Finally I get to see my Italian house that I bought online. I'm excited and nervous all at once. I can't believe I purchased a house in Italy without ever seeing it until now and I can't wait to share it with you. It's even more amazing than I expected.
Join me for the first walk through of my Italian villa in the picturesque Salento region of Italy and see the surprise room we didn't know existed. The high ceilings, the big kitchen and so much more. This one is a longer video but there was so much to share.
Discover why we have decided to call my new Italian home Casa Mengoli and then find out how you can become part of the Casa Mengoli Renovations Crew. casamengoli.com/
It's a fun idea I've come up with where you can join in with the renovations but without having to pick up a hammer or a paintbrush or get dust in your hair.
Please share in the comments below the ideas you have for Casa Mengoli. Which is your favourite room. What colour would you paint the exterior? How would you renovate the yellow room? Should we put a loft in the big grand white living room? I want to hear your ideas and if you want to become part of the Casa Mengoli Renovations Crew then click here for all the details: casamengoli.com/renovations-crew
Also, here's the link to our fantastic property finder who made it all possible for me to buy my house in Italy: Davide Mengoli from Salento with Love salentowithlove.com/

Thanks so much for watching my channel and if you have any questions about the process of buying property in Italy as a foreigner (Australian, UK, American, or New Zealander) please ask in the comments below.
I'm happy to help anyone else who has a similar dream to own a house in Italy to make that dream a reality. Life's too short not to travel and live where it makes your heart sing.
Thanks again and ciao ciao.

Having a courtyard behind doors is a great feature!
Congratulations on your purchase. A dream house at what seems to be a good price. Could you share some information on typical running costs. It would help largely on deciding what pris range to look for. We are ready to start searching and out current range is 60-75k Euro. We want to use Davide and have been following his Chanel since he had 200 subscribers:) Per Emil Norway.
Where can I purchase a 10.000k house ?
I assume from watching your video that Australia does in fact have a reciprocal agreement with Italy? I casually spoke with a geometra in Italy recently (I'm Australian) and he didn't think Australians could buy Italian property. I felt sure he was mistaken but don't know 100%.
Why no more videos ????
Hi Tegan, Thanks so much for posting this video. My husband and I, both Aussies are currently in Italy in the piedemont region trying to buy a property at the moment.... Not to live, just a holiday home with the aim to maybe one day retire in Italy. Our notary is saying we are unable. I would love so much if you could tell me the notary you used, we have been having so many issues going back and forth trying to sort codice fiscale and the notary etc. We have found a place and want to make the offer, but have now reached where the notary is saying Aussie's can't buy. Have just been getting so much mixed information, as i imagine was maybe the case for you too! Thanking you in advance and even if i don't hear from you in time, appreciate you making this helpful content, has given us hope we can make it work! ❤
Excellent video and advice - thanks!
Enjoy your new home! I would recommend updating the plumbing and AC, but other than that-keep everything as is!

Thank you.
Who did you use as a notary? My notary is saying Aussies can't purchase an existing property.
This is such a bizzarro story - even allowing for fact of buying sight unseen, why did your property consultant based in Italy not have a geometra involved in the process as they would have identified the illegal 'mum apartment' was not part of the title and the onus is then on the OWNER to sort it out and not you as the BUYER. For anyone outside of Italy buying a property in Italy, the Geometra is the most critical person to have involved in the process.
Is this the last video?
"...a house in Italy that I have never actually seen, in a place I have never been to, by somebody I have never met... "Buying a house in Italy entails more then this idiotic comment. I calied it idiotic because that is whta it is.
More videos please. Where are you???
Hello Plaese update us with the progress. I just realized the video is one year ago and the last one
The black mold is the only downside. Enjoy! I love that you bought your grandfather’s house. What a find!😊
so the title was all just a fake.
How's it going! We miss you and the house! Update when you can. Thanks from San Diego!
Hi Teagan thanks for all your very valuable experience and advice. I was wondering about the Australian official processes…if I use an Italian Power of Attorney will this still be necessary to your understanding? Cheers very much, Bel
Spero che un giorno ci aggiornerai.. 🤷🏻♀️
Basic info one should look up to start with.
Lot's of work needed. You did not say how much you spent on the house as-is
I see a lot of black mildew in most places guys. I would check into that to make sure there won't be more water damage in future.
Hi Tigan , I watched all you videos and have bee interested in buying a property in Italy also... This video where you went to see your house is the last video that I could find and it is over a year ago,, I checked your blog and website and all the activity just ended here at this video in spite of you organizing people to help you renovate,,, I wonder what happened and hope everything is Ok with you and your plan to have a home in Italy... I thought the home you bought needed a lot of renovation and looks like it could be quite expensive and time consuming.. I also have heard that in Italy and especially southern Italy the red tape to get permission to do renovations from the city hall is difficult and they often refuse changes to protect historical features and require lots of professional surveys , engineering studies and historical evaluations all done by people with lots of credentials...followed by inspections... So what happened? Are you still proceeding with your plan?... I would love to learn from your experience...

Hi, congrats to your family! Well deserved!!! I was wondering when we can expect an update on the renovations? Thank you! :)
Awe you are so cute!! Thank you for the video and congratulations 🎈 😊
Hello!! We need an update please!!!
Anyone who buys a house in a foreign country, without even seeing the house, without even being able to speak the language, is an idiot. You don't even pronounce the name of the place properly. It's BRINDisi not BrinDISI.
Just saw this video and one prior. I was wondering if you have made progress on renovations?
I like Castle, and the second one best just depends on your needs a out doir space in always nice if it is not to noisy.
Wow impressive
Wonderful video! I’m subscribed. I’m from USA and visit Italy every year and wondered if you became a resident before buying, I’m just starting to look for property but I only have a tourist visa, so can stay in Italy only 90 days.
Hi there! I'm so glad I found your channel. I am looking at houses in Corigliano d'Otranto. What drew you to that town? Great vids!
I would like you. A sunny private entrance court yard. With 3 bedrooms and sky view terrace.
Your kady video. Which door do you enter on the street level
How much did you spend to purchase your property including taxes & fees. ?
How unique is the open air court yard as you entered your new home.
Hi lovely lady, 2 years now, how is the Dolce vitta going?
I;m a Kiwi and I had absolutely no problems at all buying my house in Abruzzo Italy. So I dont get what went wrong with you guy's?
Are you planning to live there permanently/year round? I'd be interested to learn how you can do this--becoming an actual "resident," as from what I've researched, it is more convoluted than the purchasing of the home. You can, also, buy a "vacation" place and do "extended VISAS," but generally it will take 10 years of 6 months here/6 months there.
Bellissima casa! Congratulazioni!!
I think I saw mold on the walls , shouldn't that be removed before selling ???
Nice.. I'm glad you had a livable space.. I would ask for the oldest pictures of the home from the family. I would try and restore it as it began 🙏
