Well that didn't work.
Defeated by basic engineering principles, but with a '79 bracket to modify I still think this is worth another try at some point. That '20 bracket's toast now; comprehensively mutilated beyond any imaginable use.

Will a 2020 HD rear caliper and mounting bracket slip right on? No. The massive rear disc means the bracket's too short, also the spindle hole's too big. The bracket features a massive kink and annoying ledge, so will not fit snugly on the swingarm, The solution could be to cut big chunks off the bracket to make it fit the swingarm, then drill and tap a 10mm thread down through the top to secur...

Closed for thirty years now, but Grade II listed so still standing in the twenty-first century. The line's still in use; a big Drax train was creaking along as I pulled up on the bridge, so it's the same line that holds us all up for ages at Ulceby.

I have 2 spindles and 2 cases. One set is slightly larger (OD 0.487) and the other slightly thinner (0.471). The thinner case is brass lined, the thicker one is not. I want to use the spindle in the video, but it has no hole to retain it within the case; why is this?

Sumping happens if you have a British or US bike you don't use that often. Oil trickles down from the tank and fills the engine, meaning you have to drain it somehow (bear in mind there is rarely an oil drain plug under the engine) N.B.: If a component is old and has Lucas printed on it, it probably needs replacing.
We're dying out and it's not cultural; it's economic.

Motorcycles of all types are a LOT more expensive in real terms now. My first bike was £75 from a dealership in 1984 (£230 today) and it took months to get the cash together; nondescript ten year old mopeds go for three or four times that money now, and I would never have afforded it.

Needs taller handlebars. I'm storing all the original parts out of harms' way in case I ever need to sell it. It's not 1973 and nobody buys cut-down 350's with big handlebars anymore. Shame. I would put flames on the tank, but it already has racing tape down the middle.

It is possible. The new bracket needs to be welded to the old bracket. Old bracket will move with axle (chain adjustment) and new bracket will be kept from moving up/down with the tabs. Just a matter of finding someone who can weld alloy.
This is the route I'm thinking of, but I'll wait until I have a spare '79 bracket in case it goes wrong. There's a guy across the country who welded my filthy alloy crankcases (apparently it's a right faff) and it would be nice to send him something relatively clean for once.
I'm sure it's doable it's just going to take some thought and possibly some welding
I need a spare '79 bracket and I think the two brackets cobbled together will do it.
@ImminghamIronhead I definitely have done similar things using two or three different brackets. That's why I save a lot of bits and bobs. I'm not as in-depth as you are on your channel.. as on mine.. and I haven't had a sports tour since the early '80s I have the 1974
I was thinking that there's a reason that arm is attached to the axle The axle follows the tire.
I have the same problem with my '79 XLS rear brake. I jam a big screwdriver to keep the nuts from spinning. Thinking about JB Weld epoxy to repair the sockets.
My bike's at least 5% JB Weld by now 🙂
@@ImminghamIronhead How about coupling nuts that stick out a little bit to get a wrench on? Or in your case a 1/2 inch spanner? lol
@@rickster4455 That's not bad at all; wish I'd thought of it before practically welding them together 🙂
Oh well , one step forward and two steps back !! Gotta keep trying . Cheers . G.Speight
Don’t fix the caliper bracket to the swing arm ! When you adjust the chain you pull the wheel back and forth, then the caliper is at a different position to the disc. Get someone to weld/fabricate a new bracket from both the old and new one. Can be metal or aluminum.
Also xl disc is flat and solid, caliper is for a floating disc.
Bro , good idea. I would definitely drill a hole into the swingarm as an anchor point . With the bolt drilled and tapped from the top side you should be GTG !! Ride safe . Cheers . G. Speight
Good thinking 😸

Im dealing with this same issue at the moment and I THINK the inside faces of the gears should be level like it is when you have both of the CS thrust washers (.100/.065) on. I’m going to proceed like that on mine and see how it turns out.
In the end I bought a new 100, which made it level with the other one without fouling the gear underneath. I lightly filed the damage on the dogs and it's been fine ever since.
I'm about to lube tf outta my chain
Finally finished the kickstart conversion on my 1979 XLS. Thanks for all the videos they were a great resource.
Making motorbikes great again, one kickstart at a time 🙂
I don't understand what you are trying to say....looks like a bunch of parts to me.
Sooooo..... Did it start?
First kick, but the pushrods kept going out of adjustment on a whim for months. This turned out to be worn tappet blocks (AKA lifter guides), and since I replaced those the pushrods have been fine.
Your ignition coil eats electricity if you have ignition ON and engine not running
Good idea.
Love the logic on this question " when it rust" is when you oil the chain. Perfect ! Cheers ! G. Speight
I had a '76 XLH with electric start. I thought the kickstart only models were XLCH?.
Mine had electric start when I got it; I retro fitted the kickstart a couple of years ago.
I also have a 79'. Was the clutch nut reverse or normal thread? Ive seen both quoted and manual doesnt say. Thanks
Normal thread on mine.
Hey mate. If you were to test it with a battery on the bench, would the solenoid pin pull in or out with power connected? My pin isn’t moving with power introduced but does let 12v across to supply pole
On the bike, the solenoid pin should pull in when power hits it. I'm not certain it would operate without the starter motor connected, as maybe the draw from the starter motor is needed to make it all work somehow. This is all spitballing as I have no electrical theory, but the pin definitely pulls in when it's working, not out.
@ I can bridge the power across the 2 poles on the solenoid which spins the starter motor but the arm between the solenoid and the starter cog that engages the starter clutch does not operate so I’m thinking my solenoid is stuffed because the internal pin isn’t doing anything to engage the starter clutch
@@jasonsuman2536 I think you found the trouble 🙂
Pretty ugly,not 100% original.
Ironheads were known to diesel, which means to have carbon buildup in the heads, they might also run hot being mostly made of iron.
The brass valve is a good idea, PROVIDING, you remember to open it BEFORE starting the engine. Hand on heart I am not certain I would and a nice engine would be ruined. The ball valve is more expensive but probably failsafe. Keep up the good work though.
@davidclegg3554 I'm hoping I remember; it's only for when the Beezer's laid up for long periods, so not too sketchy.
A 79 AMF Sporty was my first New bike I ever bought. Wish I still had it. I sold it to buy a new 1982 Shovel head Wide Glide.

The cuvature of the BSA motor was and always will be more esthetically pleasing to look at IMHO, and I rode both the A65 and a 73 T140 Triumph . Cheers . Ride / build safe !! Guy Speight
It does look better, IMO. Personally I never liked the integrated speedo cowl things. A lot of people these days get stressed when you start modding older bikes (especially if you do frame mods), but they forget we were already doing it when these bikes were new (well, new-ish). Speaking purely for myself, the power:weigh ratio is slightly irrelevant, owing to my not inconsiderable girth. Still, those pies won't eat themselves!
The lighter it is, the easier it is to push home 🙂 In the sixties excessive cowling looked space-age, but it dated quickly.
You pretty much explained it to the core ! It's either in your blood or not !! Cheers my friend and I picked up another iron head (77) 1000 to go along with my 70 flh . Ride safe . Guy Speight
Awesome bike ! Guy Speight
First of all great to see a new video . Now depending on how "correct" you want to keep that , beeza , lol you can check out Britt USA and buy a solid state unit that does awaw with all of the "Lucas" darkness and maybe have a bike that runs. I rode an A65 Lightning chop for yrs and they will always be my favorite Britt bike . Cheers and ride / wrench safe ! Guy Speight
I may go for that if the new Lucas one disappoints, the B40 gets less correct every time I work on it. The look I'm going for is this: Imagine a teenager has got hold of an old BSA 350 in 1974; what would they do to it?
PS BSA totally my favourite Brit bikes also; I had an A10 in the nineties, a C15 in the eighties and even a BSA Javelin bicycle in the seventies.
I got a couple old shovelhead Harleys but if you keep the ball in seat well if the ball sits in the seat well you don't have to worry about oil from the bag down to the motor unless you sit it for 6 months but I try and ride all the time
My Ironhead has nothing; no filter, no anti-sumping valve. I looked it up in the parts book and they were like that from new; I have an external oil filter now and, like yourself, regular use means sumping isn't an issue.
I had a 69 triumph back in the early '80s late '70s and I remember that little zener diode you always had to keep it in the wind because apparently it got warm. And the little fins were broken off
Yep they get red hot; all that excess power has to go somewhere 🙂The old zener diode had a heatsink but no fins, and was under the tank. The new one is on a bracket below the tank right at the front, getting all the airflow.
Some day I’m going to see one of these “cold start” videos where they forgot the bike had been running and get 3rd degree burns on their hand when they grab the (still hot) exhaust header. 😂😂😂
Fired right up and it goes good. Love it. That bike will take you where you want.
Always a "treat" to watch your videos , there is no love like iron head sportster luv , cept maybe shovelhead love , me 77 sporty , 1970 flh . Cheers. Guy Speight
I miss those days , and i miss London and the U.K. even more !! Cheers !. Guy Speight
900-1000ish has always been the recommended idle speed for HD. That thump….thump….thump people like so much is starving oil and beating the $hit out of the bottom end. Some people are way more worried about how cool people may think they are than actually riding and enjoying their bike for a long time. Then they’ll blame the bike when a failure occurs. I’ve built many over the years and have had more than a few people ask what cam SOUNDS coolest, not performs best for their style of riding, but sounds coolest idling, it just amazes me how thirsty people are for cool points over common sense.
Ive been watching your videos for awhile now and i finally got a 79 xlch in good shape after waiting patiently for a few years. Your bike is awesome and has style man! Mine is a little more chopper looking and the kicker is rough sometimes when it wants to be a bitch haha but shes fun as hell in my opinion! Anyway, if you dont mind answering a question unrelated to this video, what rear shocks did ya go with that fit? I currently have the original 13" and as you know... These years (79-81) use 3/8 bolts instead of the normal 1/2 harley used on every other year. Id prefer a slightly shorter shock cuz im not a tall person but clearance is tight in regards to the chain. Ive tried some other shocks off newer bikes and they will rub... Id also prefer to not drill out the holes for 1/2 bolts if i can help it. If ya see this comment and get back to me itd be super appreciated! If not no worries im sure ya busy and cant possibly read every comment. Cheers 💪
I had a ‘78 Guzzi that ran with no actual points on the….er….points. Didn’t ’arf make a difference when I put new ones in🤔
