Welcome to Catch it Grow it Cook it! My name is James Sakker and I'm obsessed with all things fish, food growing and cooking it all up.
Learn how to catch fish, lobsters, crabs and other wild food. Dive underwater for spearfishing action and sustainable harvesting of great eating fish and crustaceans. Catch huge lobsters like slipper lobsters, tropical lobsters and Eastern Rock lobsters or Packhorse crays as they are called in New Zealand. See full pots of great mud crabs without even using a boat.
Get into the garden and grow vegetables, fruits and grow herbs. Watch the garden change through the year and learn how you can produce lots of food in your backyard so sustainable!
Then come back to the kitchen and cook up a storm with recipes and techniques to help you get the best from your produce and catch. Hot smoke fish, make pulled pork and cook wild game. Create delicious dishes with your own fruit and vegetables. Learn how to pickle, dry and preserve your harvest.

Glad you enjoyed it!
What a good buddy you are, putting a second shot on a fish you just shot with the same spear! Not a clever fish, that one! But definitely tasty looking! Awesome stuff mate!
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. You’re going to need a bit more climate change to get them on your local spot!!
Awesome watch ❤
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful big fish James, there’s something special about barramundi, I haven’t shot one yet, but 1 day🤞
Thanks mate they are so challenging and rewarding to hunt. Glad you enjoyed it
Almost Barra season again. Will be heading to some coastal spots ASAP. Should be some big undisturbed ones about in Feb.
Good luck!! Hope you get some visibility. They are my favourite fish to hunt and superb eating
2:02 Is that a sea snake? You weren’t phased one bit ahaha legend
Yeah there are so many sea snakes inshore but they just seem to ignore you. Definitely have to be careful cray diving as they are often going through the cracks looking for fish and I have accidentally touched them
I had one wrap around my speargun last season. I think it was more curious than anything.
Yeah that sounds right. They definitely are more curious on the reef than right inshore
Nice work James!not worried about bumping into a croc up there?
Yes I was definitely worried as a local guy told me he’d seen a big one on the beach near my spot. It was so dirty I hoped a croc wouldn’t see me!! Usually I’m chasing these fish in mid winter and I don’t worry so much but in late October it’s much more risky.
@@jamessakker2117yep winter neaps 👍
Sharks I’m ok with but I draw the line at crocs..they are plain nasty..definitely got some guts bro!
I’m probably not that smart!!

Glad you enjoyed it!
Are those trout tastier with the skin off? If so, that first fish was a ripper shot! Looks like some fat, tasty fish. Gotta love the vis up there!
How deep did you get these?
From about 2 to 6 metres. Thanks for watching I use!
Great vid! What speargun are you using?
Hi Luke thanks for watching I use Edge guns made by Tony Heugh. I have a 1 metre and a 1.5 metre
Hey james, thanks for sharing the videos. My dad and i used to spear this spot all the time. Cheers for bringing back great memories. Love the rock formations with seaweed and sand gutters in-between. Shot my largest trout here.
Hi Adam that’s great I’m glad you got to re live your dive spot!! I’m not surprised you got your biggest trout there. Thanks for watching!
Hey matey what’s the best time of year for wind 1770 awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it October November is good or May.
Gut shot king 🤴
As long as they go in the esky it’s all good. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
Great video as always mate, love waking up and seeing a new sakker video. We will have to link up for a dive at some point
Glad you enjoyed it! You know how good it can be there
Sad to think of the tragic death of the spearfisherman there last week. A case of sheer bad luck catching up with you.
Yeah absolutely very unlucky and a tragedy for him and his family and friends. Sounded like they were doing everything as safely as possible but unfortunately bad things sometimes happen
Beautiful trout again in average vis. Bad vis specialist. I've started dive bombing fish like you do and having some success.
Very good Tim glad you get something from the videos. Thanks for watching!
Hey James some nice trouts there I bet they made yous work hey, same problem I have when I cruise out there everyone else in my boat gets all the blackspots I don't know why but they always evade me and take off
Hi David thanks for watching! I’m glad it’s not just me. You guys had a great day with the old bloke driving
good stuff!
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing day out James, epic mackerel session! Wishing you a wonderful new year and plenty of bounty in 2025. Dive safe, have fun, enjoy life mate! 👌🍾🍻😋
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. Very nice start to the season. Thanks for all your support over the years much appreciated!! Have a great new year mate
mission complate🎉
Absolutely!! Thanks for watching
No shortage of Spanish down there at the moment. Hopefully we see a few up our way.
Yeah still a bit hit and miss but a nice start! I always thought Mackay was best in September October for Spanish but I haven't dived much there in summer
How bloody good James to see so many mackerel around! What a day out. Beautiful Samson fish, a shame about the Jew but you ended up with plenty anyway. Hoping to get out and bust a few Mack’s on the rod & reel shortly! Hopefully we are in for a ripper season, it’s been far too long! Just have to pray for no floods now! Cheers James, stay safe mate!
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully we are in for a cracking season
Awesome session👌 So many mackerel.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!
In Qld that would be a few days worth of Spanish bag limit there😂
Yeah lots of baby Spanish around which is good. QLD limit is ridiculous!!
@jamessakker2117 haha not wrong
@@jamessakker2117 no, one is all you need.
The spanish have shown up in north nsw! Thats awesome. Im keen for a trip down again soon
Yeah we are just waiting for some vis
Wow absolutely cool Congratulations ❤❤
Very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Hello James. Only recently discovered your channel. Enjoy it very much. A little while ago I found a photo of us on the Booby Bird in the Swains many years ago. Starting to feel my age!
Hi Peter long time no see must be 20 years! Glad you’re enjoying the channel as you can see I’m still mad about diving!! You still diving much?
Currently living at Tamborine Mountain behind Gold Coast. Diving out of Tweed but not much success. Will try North Stradbroke and Moreton islands next few weeks. Off to NZ in February for a week charter boat around White Island. Lived for a few years on Norfolk Island. Great spearfishing there. I was sad to leave.
You did well for bramble, it gets hit pretty hard. No Spanish around?
No Spanish the trout were very well educated!! We did put the yards in out there. Thanks for watching mate!
Lovely fish there. They did seem a bit flighty, but they can be harder in close due to being worked over regularly. Love the reef!!
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a nice part of the world
The lobster hole is a lot different with the eastern one. If you do not mention, I will think it is very easy to catch. I do not think about the size of the hole mouth is the same size of the cray at all. Got another tip from you. Much apprieciated. As I mentioned before, I learnt many many tips how to catch easterns. I had an awesome year this year. I have caught 57 easterns so far. I caught the first 2 in Feb before I know your channel. All the others are caught after I watched your lobster videos. Thanks again. Dive Safe.
Very good! I’m glad you enjoyed it and have got some good tips
Ripper work James, summer is here and it is nearly xmas time, thanks for the videos, great work, made my night! Wishing you all a great weekend! Dive safe, have fun, enjoy life! 👌👍🍻
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!! Always appreciate your support. Water is freezing and dirty now so hopefully it will come good soon
Great work James and Dodgy, miss you blokes
Hey James great to hear from you mate!!
Those golden are good chewing. The pick of the trevs I reckon, although I've never tried blue fin or diamonds. Nice bag of crays too.
Yeah I agree with you I don’t like the blue fin trevs they are very strong tasting. Thanks for watching!!
Cracker snapper vid ay and heres a question touv probs never gotten yeah cause were both the same as soon as i see sharks i swim straight at them show them no fear and they swim off cause they notice eye contact straight away as we know, question: my dad and alot others been using these fake eyes on the back of there heads straooed to the goggles now i said to my dad no way id use that cause if there was a shark ever behind me and seen them and i swim away not knowing its there the shark i feel might think im scared and when ive seen others swim away they tend to follow/chase and thats last thing i want hahahha i tend to look behind me when going back up to surface bht you just never no i could miss one sumhow and after 15yrs diving all these new stuff commjng out i just rather my technique and think theyd be mire harm then good you got any opinions???
I don’t have the eyes but I think it’s probably a good idea as sharks definitely look for eye contact and white sharks are very sneaky. I hate to think how many have snuck up on me that I didn’t see. You have the right approach go hard early!
@jamessakker2117 I just don't like the idea if the shark thinks I've seen it and I don't realise and I start swimming away from it to me I think it'll look like I'm scared of it 😂😂😂😂 that's all I can't get my head around. Thanks for dropping Drew's channel aswell I watched literally every single one on his channel last night as his a local I had to I loveee his content just spewing it's been 7mths with no upload I follow him on insta his been out lately once but yeah hope his all good but again thanks 👍🏽💪🏽
One thing i love James is the old music ya use like the start of this and a heap of other vids touv done as its the same music in that dvd of you (spearos of oz) i still got mine had it for over 10 yrs nearly 15 tbh think i got it 2011 and still watch it few times a year that and (One Fish) they my 2 fav old dvds 😂😂😂
That’s great to hear! I put spearos of oz on my channel so you can watch it on TH-cam if you want. Thanks for all your support it’s what makes it worthwhile to do these videos
@jamessakker2117 Yeah I watched it again last night I actually got up to a couple vids newer then that so once I'm fully awake not half brain dead from being up all night watching vids of yours I'ma get into the rest I've missed 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 you actually inspired me I live at Hawks nest as you'd obviously no where I live and I been kayaking around the karuah river heaps but I figured I'ma take my Kyak up dark point and launch on a really nice day and paddle to Broughton it's only 1.8kms I've done 10km paddles b4 so it'll be a breeze and if I want them good fish gotta do what ya gotta do cause seeing you's swing out to reefs just swim has made me realise I've got a way to Broughton with is magical I'm always saying I can't get to dive good places no one takes me well I got a chance now so yeah I'ma even bring my GoPros cause youv also encouraged me to wanna film I don't care about views or money tho I just wanna do it for my son so I can document lil trips I go on with and without him and save them to the TH-cam cloud for free so thanks Bro now back to sleep till lunch 😂😂
That’s a great part of the world! The sisters are a great dive and a kayak is a great stealthy way to get close to fish like snapper. Good luck with the diving!!
@@jamessakker2117 yeah I love diving the sisters got sum beautiful drop offs for kings current gets pushed thru nice I've got a 17l had it 5yrs only took it to Broughton once and then started taking everything out for a rebuild didn't need it mind you just watched to many TH-cam videos hahahahha and I've been about 10 times with mates so it's killing me deep down literally living Bennet street here street away from Bennet beach and seeing the island every day so I'ma deffo get that kayak into the water next month for sure everyone rekons it'll be a mission with swell and that and current but I'm not stupid I know it's not gonna be to hard to get to and I choose a perfect day it'll be sweet.
Good on you don’t stress about current etc just don’t go out in a 30 knot sou’wester!! We nearly sunk a quintrex dory in one
Soz Bro but ima go back thru ya whole channel and i like every vid so i know if one pops up if its not liked inhavnt seen it yet hahhaa
Thanks mate I’m glad you’re enjoying them. Appreciate your support
How did you go with the sharks there mate? I was there yesterday and we got hammered by them, first fish we shot had 3 sharks on it within about 10 seconds
We didn’t have any trouble at all. I think it was because the water is a lot cooler in winter. Not much fun for you guys!!
@jamessakker2117 Yeah, the warmer water certainly does seem to fire them up! They weren't little either 😂
What gun do you use?
I use edge guns made by Tony Heugh. The one in this video is 1.5 metres 2 metre double notch 7 mm shaft with twin 16 mm rubbers. I also use a 1 metre edge gun in dirty water
Ripper Video James and Chris! Top stuff! Cheers for sharing it! Dive safe, have fun, enjoy life! 👌👌🍻🍻
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it despite the absence of cracks
Love your work boyz, great session. All the best 👍
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!!
Love your videos of Jew mate, keep them coming👌
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful diving conditions. Glad we don't have bars like that up here, we just get washing machine conditions.
Thanks mate that’s the bar when it’s good!! Glad you enjoyed it
@jamessakker2117 wouldn't want a smaller boat then I guess. Been a bit hit and miss up here, hoping to head out tomorrow. Got a good tusky at Dangerous last time but boat was stalling everytime I opened it up. Figured it might be a fuel problem so changed filter, fuel lines, primer...money pit!!
Yeah my boat is a 420 renegade and I wouldn’t take it out on that tide and swell. Boats… always cost you!
Yewwww first one for the season!
Yeah nice to get some good water!! Didn’t last long it’s horrible now
Such nice looking trevs up that way. Interesting looking cray ground too. Cheers for another great video.
Thanks mate I reckon you would enjoy this kind of diving certainly warmer than Tassie!!
@@jamessakker2117 hoping to get up mid-north Queensland way July/August next year. Keen to try some tropical species!
Yeah that’s the best time
Dingo beach is terrible!! Bad vis very sketchy boat ramp. Apologies to all the divers that love this place ❤❤
@@jamessakker2117 apparently quite a few crays. We need more boat ramps up here.
Yeah the tidal ramps make it hard for sure
Still haven't made it up to Bowen yet. Will have to head up there and check it out. I heard Dingo Beach is also good.
Bowen is very nice diving when the conditions are right it does like to blow…..
👍
How bloody awesome James! Unreal achievement mate, they are certainly a bloody cluey fish! Was great to meet you a few weeks back on the beach whilst drone fishing for snapper with Mitch from MNC fishing charters, cheers!
Thanks Mark Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck with your drone fishing Mitch certainly knows how to find them!!
I was so stressed out watching Reece hold his Cray's expecially the first one he bagged held it by the tail was so scary and out it head first into the bag PMSL glad he got to grab sum big ones tho and learn about them even if i was stressed to the max 😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it! He’s a great bloke and loves his diving
Gee some nice fish there, you are a very skilled diver James. Enjoy mate well deserved.
Thanks mate that’s very kind of you!! Glad you enjoyed it one of the best weeks of my diving ever!!
