Here's a roundup of 20 of my favorite contact mic experiments that I've posted to my instagram feed. Many of these are custom-made piezo elements, but quite a few are store-bought elements that are just as fun to play around with.

Piezo mics, a motorized platform, and weights-processing sound in Ableton Live
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a quick project in which I stuck piezo contact mics onto different weights, and a metal plate. A motorized platform drags additional weights across the wired-up surfaces, and the resulting sounds are heavily processed in Ableton. I modified a cassette player to play like a synth - Pt.1
มุมมอง 17K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is the first mock-up of an instrument I'm building. A cassette player that is controlled by a few variable speed potentiometers. It's a speed-control mod that allows the cassette tape to be played like a warbly, tune-able synth sort of thing. I'll post more videos as I continue to build it. woah
I love the creative border you placed over this video. It's really unique, like your sound style.
Thank you for such a detailed and super cool project! Building a one octave version as we speak! I've found that removing the walkman's built in pitch adjustment is essential if you want the player to start/stop when a key is pressed, and using a B100K pot instead of a B5K yields an incredible amount of pitch control variation What a cool design and circuit, Rich. Thanks again for being so generous on this channel!
Right on!
Прикольно
2:52 Bro just created an entire Shelby burnout synthesizer 💀
2:32 Excuse you! 😡😂
This is something i always wanted to do with a slide potentiometer and optionally a synth
🤯👏👏
💙
what contact microphone did you use when pouring sand on the ground? Can it be purchased, if yes where? can zoom h4 essential or f3 record it
What program do you use?
Wow. That's all.
Curious what app was being used to add all these effects?
It's Ableton Live
I’ve just built the exact little circuit that you have, however, it has introduced a lot of noise into the signal. Any idea why that would be?
Epic sir! ❤
so dang cool. what is value of the resistors? I just cant read it on the video
Love the melting ice, never expected that sound
so this is how horror movie sound effects are made. Very interesting.
where can i get the spiral spring steel? like you have for the jangley box?
This is awesome
Wow! Getting the same buzz off these sounds as I did when I discovered Einstürzende Neubauten back in the 80s. Thanks.
Not exactly a bass Kalimba, it's more of a Spring-a-Ling.
So underrated video. thanks this made my day
“No officer you don’t understand I need to be IN THIS TREE BARK”
2:52 He made a Honda Civic with a fartcan exhaust!
OMG😂
Yo, what kind of cassettes are you using?
CHRIST ALMIGHTY THIS IS SO BASED
This one looks reeeeeally fun to make. I will try to find out if all the stuff you bought are available in my shit-hole-third-world country Im living. Grettings
Very beautiful!
The one with the little bouncy ball sounds absolutely amazing! Didnt expect that haha
Are these all your own videos? If so any update on your tutorials with contact mics
imagine doing a live set during the 2024 Eclipse and letting the beat distort just as the sun gets blocked out
There is truly no limit to discovering the possibilities. Love the rubber ball, and the thawing brick of ice. Can't forget the "talking tree".
Hasta cuántas notas puede llevar ?
combining all these sounds in to one track and visualising it with a machine emerging from these parts would be so awsome!
This deserves more views
Love this! I think 1:27 is my favorite
ohhhh, this is such a vibe 💔 especially when you recorded main guitar riff, it just set this western kinda vibe and the bass 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
very exciting! [heads to home depot]
I got a hold of a Marantz field recorder. My buddy used to use it to learn guitar solos because it has a pretty generous speed control. (hes old) I'm looking to use it for something music related. I've heard drums sound great with natural tape compression, but I'm already using a Tascam 8 track from the 90s. I've also heard that people make them into tape echo/delays but it has to be the stereo version and mine's mono. I'm thinking of taking advantage of the speed knob. Recording non-drum percussion, like pots and pans etc. I think of speed like shrinky dinks, or photcopying and shrinking a drawing, it takes away the imperfections, I guess compresses it literally. And I think slowing almost anything down you could create some interesting synth-like bass tones. Maybe make a tape loop and use it as a super lo-fi drum machine. Could potentially make a handful of drum loops and have them on hand. slap some effects on them. voila.
This is very strange and beautiful.. I want more!
The quartz is a mighty mineral
Awesome! Very (very) inspiring!
Wow! 14:56 is so reminiscent of the Star Trek transporter sound! And by the way, I find this whole video quite inspiring. Great work!
Yeah right? I thought the same thing! Thank you for the words.
I'm loving this and so glad to see an update on your channel! I'll be sharing this on my Facebook page! AMAZING!! Do you care if I make it public? 👍🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼🤯😲🤯🤜🏼🤛🏼👍🏼
Thank you! I don't mind at all :) :)
Very inspiring, particularly the rubber ball. What’s the make of your little amp?
Thanks! The amp is a Roland Cube Micro. Great little thing.
Thank you @@TheSoundofMachines
@TheSoundofMachines thanks, I was wondering, great work, I use contact mics, tapr, fx and vinyl for sonic art projects, love this video.
Amazing techniques
Thank you! Cheers!
