My wife has been on a quest for the last year to fly a plane that she owns half of. After lessons, a PPL, and over 100 hours of flying she is ready to take on our very own Vans RV9A. The crazy part is I decide to show her how! This is NOT instruction! I am not a CFI. But I am a husband and would like to remain that way. Lets see how it goes!

John Wayne to Pismo for some camping and a Vans RV meet up
มุมมอง 1.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I fly IFR out of John Wayne airport up to Oceano for my first try at airplane camping and an RV owners meet up. I learned it seems much easier to fly IFR in the LA basin out of a busy airport. I met some great people and look forward to the next one!

That’s a big ole dawg!
We’re flying to Napa in a couple weeks. Let me know if you’d like to cruise somewhere or get together. Any suggestions on where to stay up there?
Let me know when you’re coming in. If I have the day off would love to meet up!
@@svtpete83 planes in annual now. Hopefully goes smooth. You think I should fly into Napa or one of the Sonoma fields? Which is better? I’ll be getting a rental car so either place works.
@@RaceMentally Napa for sure. They do gorentals from there and there are more services for sure. Also it’s one of the most beautiful airports on the west coast to fly into!
@@svtpete83 awesome! NAPA it is! 🤙🏼🙏🏼
@@svtpete83well finally making the trip. Will be flying in Friday staying at Springhill Suites. See some wind on Sunday forecasted 12-27kts. That a big deal departing up there in an RV? I’ve only done 10-17kts landing ever.
Nice, and congrats Shayna. Heartwarming little comment at the end. Best wishes to you both.
Thank You!!
I hold the nose wheel off until it settles. I’d suppose I can roll 1000 feet in a wheelie in my 9A.
Heck ya!
Ruidoso NM is a great spot!
Thanks for checking it out!!
Great video. Really enjoyed watching it. What camera and mount are you using?
Im using gorpos. A 6 for the in cockpit video and audio. And Gopro max 360s for the rest. They work pretty good. I wish I could get more battery life out of them. Thanks for checking out the video!!
what editing software are you using? Great vid!
Thank you!! I use cyberlink powerdirector
@@svtpete83 thanks Pete. Is it one of the better editors compared to most? You satisfied with it?
I have used a few of them. For editing 360 degree stuff. It works really well. That’s why I use it. I’m no pro. I flip burgers for a living. So the fact that I can video edit with zero education on it I appreciate. I’ve have only used a few different programs. So far this one has been the best for me.
Congrats Shayna !😃👍🏻
Great video. I first flew into Havasu in 1971 (age 15), with my uncle in his 182 Skylane. Once in a lifetime Maine to California cross country!
That’s awesome. One of these days I need to go coast to coast like that.
I’m doing this same legs/ route this next week in my RV 🤙🏼
That’s awesome! Let me know how it goes!!!
@@svtpete83 weather looks to be deteriorating. SEE to SEZ on 3/18. What are your thoughts?
@@RaceMentallyThis depends on a lot of factors. Your skill level, personal minimums, your comfort level in difficult weather, and the planes equipment. There are a few windows to get in from the looks of it. But icing and convection are areas I avoid at all costs. Best thing to do is take a look, analyze it, plan the best route, always have outs, and if you're still second guessing it err on the side of safety and caution. The airplane always makes it more fun, but the car works as well! Good luck and let me know what you decide to do!
@@svtpete83 thanks for the response. As a newer pilot I cancelled it. I’m bubble boy when it comes it flying. I don’t have to be anywhere anytime. When we booked the trip I mentioned to the wife I don’t want to book rooms or anything ever. Why? External factors. Usually if I go anywhere it’s somewhere when it’s not busy and during the week. I might stick to CA this next week for places to go. Thanks again 🙏🏼🤙🏼
@@RaceMentallyAwesome decision Pilot!!
Great video! Looks like an awesome trip. Love the music!!
Thanks for checking it out!! I appreciate it!!
Awesome video I have the same Van’s aircraft. Looking to do some trips like this in the future.

Love the background music!
Thanks for checking it out !
Great stuff, cant wait to build up that kind of confidence.
Just keep flying! You’ve already been to one of these airports!
Epic!!
Thanks for watching!!!
Only in Napa? We have the same toilets at our local railway station, and I live in South Australia.
Well I guess Australia is spending crazy amount so money on toilets too!
@@svtpete83 Yep. South Australia is a wine region too. Maybe that's why we have those toilets
Why am I thinking that door will open one day when someone is in the middle of business LOL

Nice video Pete, bummed I wasn't able to make it!
Hope to see you on the next one! Thanks for checking out the video!
Sick video!!! Can I get those interior panels and seats for my 6A?
Yes you can! I believe a company called Oregon Aero supplied the interior for our bird. Thanks for checking out the video!!
@@svtpete83just got my PPC. Time to fly. What engine do you have and FP or CS?
@@RaceMentallycongrats on becoming a Pilot!! Thats a huge deal! We have a fixed pitch catto 3 blade prop attached to an IO-360 with dual electronic ignition.
@@svtpete83 thanks! I’m down here in so cal. Io320 FP 2 blade whirlwind 🤙🏼
Great video! We flew in too for the event (you barely caught our tail at 7:21 on the left side) ... Castle is an amazing historical resource for Northern California and beyond. More people should definitely visit especially on these special open cockpit days! If you are lucky enough to fly in you can truly appreciate just how "looooong" (11,802') that runway is and can all just imagine what landing a B52 must have been like at this historic base. Thanks for sharing your video!
It is really surreal landing on that awesome runway with so much history! Thanks for checking out the video!!
Dude you’re the G.O.A.T
I'm blushing lol Thanks for checking it out!!
Great job!!! I just got an RV6A and this made it so I have more confidence when flying.
Love it!! Thanks for checking out the video!
Another great video brother. I flew an hour and a half of crosswind practice today on 2 zero . Smiles the whole time. I've got my bifer in two weeks. You da man peter. Working at 147 in the morning. Makin money I can turn into noise.

Thanks for checking it out!
Looks like you're equipped to the nines. Bad pun intended. What's your EW? Looks like she was picking it up nicely. Glad you are both into aviation.
Thanks for checking out the video Mark! Not sure what EW is? But our 9 gets most missions done that I intend it for!
Oh baby! Love me some flat bottom roosters. Sweet mandella dude.
building my 7A and intend to teach my kids and wife in it. I have a question about your 9. What type of seats are you using?
Our seats and seat cushions are made by a company called oregon aero. They make some great stuff! I would also look into the antisplat almost a 14 mod. This gave me much more adjust-ability when it came to seating and positioning. Good luck with the build!!
@@svtpete83 TY!
Oh gosh! This made me cry!
Yay Shayna!!!! You are bad butt!!!
Great Video!
Thanks for checking it out!
I've only flown VFR under Light Sport fixed wing, but have practiced IFR using Microsoft's series of flight simulators for desktop computers, including their latest sim, MSFS 2020 which can reproduce my VFR flying experience really well. I have tried IFR flight and it is nerve wracking to fly and hope one is lined up with the runway and hope the traffic around is aware a slower aircraft is on approach. With our modern GPS's, it's a bit easier to fly IFR but one must still use the localizer to stay on the runway heading and glide slope. The most amazing IFR landing I experienced as a passenger was on a Mexicana flight into Denver from Zacatecas. The soup was so bad we had to divert to Pueblo and wait for the soup in Denver to lift, we were stuck in Pueblo two hours. When we landed in Denver, I did not see the runway until I was just over it, and from my point of view that was only about 75 feet of visibility so the pilots were flying and landing at minimums. We missed our connection and had to wait seven hours for the next one to Phoenix, and my wife was so patient--I had a terrible migraine by that time from the stress and the flight attendants gave me Excedrin so I could drive us home from Sky Harbor. I enjoy videos like yours because they show excellent pilotage. My CFI showed me how easy it was to learn how to fly, and how challenging it was to become a pilot, which is why I never went for an IFR ticket and remained with Light Sport. But I practice IFR flight on my desktop simulator in case weather unexpectedly moves in--it may save my life some day.
It may very well! Thanks for the kind words and the stories! And thanks again for watching the channel. I really appreciate it!
When you said you tried to protect the nose gear, is that why your elevators are tat up on landings?
Ya, We keep the nose wheel off the ground for as long as possible. So you end up stick all the way back by the end of your roll.
Thank for sharing! 😀👍🏻
Thank you for watching!!
Great video. I’m building a 9A. Did Vans 9A have the Antisplat nose gear reinforcement?
We do have the nose gear antisplat nose gear reinforcement. I think it is mandatory for the A models. Especially if you are running anything bigger than an o320 on the front end. It gets heavy.
I didn’t read your question right. I cannot comment on the vans plane. I should have asked.
Great video, great to have you back!!! What zone did the controller ask if you were familiar with?
He asked if I was familiar with the Yolo Airport jump zone. I think it was active when I was passing by. Thanks for the kind words and checking out the video!!
You make it look so damn easy LOL
Editing can make anyone look like a superstar!
Going into Smerf😂
Thank goodness Gargamell wasn't there!
Thank you for documenting this flight. I'm always avoiding SMF so it was a treat to see you maneuvering and landing there. Such a great area to be flying around, and to not have to make that drive between Napa and Sacramento! What a gorgeous time machine you have to make that possible!
Thanks Reuben! I always appreciate your kind words!!
Your videos keep getting better and better. I’m finishing an RV 14 right now and really looking forward to the extra speed benefits. Keep up the great work.
That 14 will be a time machine! Keep at it. I appreciate your feedback!!
Nice work!
Thank you!!
Dang! That was impressive. Love the take offs and landings. So that's what Green Island Rd. looks like from above. Nice! Scratches behind the ears for Porter and Amelia!
It sure does look cool from up there! Thanks for checking the video out!
Great final landing for full stop! I was cheering you on when you completed it. Well done girl!
Shayna says thank you!! Thanks for checking out the video!
Hi Peter! It's Mike, the mail guy. Was great to meet you this afternoon. Wow! What a beautiful plane! Love the color and design. Also great to see the pups in the vid. So well behaved. My favorite dogs on this route! What a pleasure to finally meet the faces to the names on your mail. Hehe! Happy flying you two! By the way, excellent video presentation. When you mentioned you were going to get the "best" tug, I had no idea it was the actual name of the product. Heh!
Mike!! It was so awesome to meet you yesterday! Thanks for checking out the channel!! Hopefully we will see you again soon!
@@svtpete83 Every Friday like clockwork! Hehe! Love your video content. Just saw the one with your wife's solo trip. Talk about awesome! I'm one of those guys lacking the cojones to do a tenth of what she did.
Dear Pete, I recently finished an RV-10 restoration and it seams to have similar equipment to your plane 650GPS, GRT HX PFD and MFD, and a Trutrak Vision 385. Im unfamiliar with some of this equipment and having issues coupling the autopilot's vertical to the EFIS. Im sure Im doing something very basic incorrectly. Would love to bend your ear for a moment or two.
Scott is was awesome talking with you! I hope the flight test gets that vertical control to couple! Good luck!
Love the music but not while your talking man. Rather hear your commentary.
I appreciate the feedback!
Thx for the video. I just got a 7A with GRT, this really helps.
Thanks for watch! Glad it can help out! You'll love the GRT stuff, and more importantly, the RV!!
I have said this many times. I just think your an amazing person Mr Pete. I truly hope you become the new Regional manger in Ten if the rumors are true that in n out is coming this way.
