KLR 650 Ride on the Barlow Trail with a CRF 300L Rally!
A friend and I traversed the Historic Barlow Trail on our motorcycles. We were surprised to find an actual covered wagon parked on the trail. I also managed to thoroughly embarrass myself with several dumps of the bike this trip. All in all a great day.

    Pretty cool. The Honda was really made for that type of stuff. The 300l Rally has recently sparked my interest but I haven’t seen one in person yet. Is it as small as it looks or is your friend a giant, height-wise? On paper it isn’t that different from the KLR but in your video it almost looks like a toy, although it handles the trail brilliantly.

      The 300L is a great bike, if they were available i would have considered it over the KLR. My friend is like 6'4 maybe, so yes, tall and heavy set, maybe 275 lbs now? The only downside of the 300L is the wimpy suspension, he has it upgraded with the Rally Raid Level 1 suspension i believe. So it sits quite high now, like KTM level high, with next to no squat when im on it at 200 lbs. The stock suspension is supposedly set for a 125 lb person

    Can I ask, why you stopped using the awning? Is it a huge hassle, not very useful, etc? I have been looking at a teardrop and really hope the awning provides the "changing room" option.

    • @getlostbrandon
      @getlostbrandon 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great Question. The actual awning room is a bit of a hassle to set up. They are quite heavy, and once wet you'll have to dry it out at home. I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker, they are quite useful, but we just eventually decided it wasn't giving us any benefit. The last time i set it up i think we were receiving 4 inches of rain overnight, which was supposed to continue happening for the next 3 days straight... so after two hours of holding the awning up for added drainage i just decided i didn't want to camp that bad. On sunny adventures, absolutely the awning is great. On rainy trips they can collect water and require monitoring to prevent a swimming pool effect. I recommend an awning, but awning rooms are something i learn to live without.

    Good coffee is an obsession for me. After many years of chasing the perfect cup, I've long since settled on the old school pour over method. No deep clean required so you always get a relatively clean cup. Vacuum is a close second for unadulterated flavour. For camping though the coffee press seems more self contained, and I do love a nice robust pressed brew. Of course for simplicities sake there is always the Turkish method using an ibrik. Hook that little sucker on your backpack lol.

    Awesome. The forests there look magical. Also love how much seemingly open land there is to explore. In NH you run into a lot of gated off areas. Doesn't stop me but it think proves the culture is a bit different. Are those like national forests?

    Nice ride, I noticed a camping opportunity or two!, just curious as to what tires your running?, I'm on my 2nd set of Kenda K-270's.... when new they seem a bit spongy on pavement ( not bad but noticeable). I got 7'000 miles on the first set, the front started cupping out , I got lax on checking tire pressure & the front got low , If not for that issue I could of gotten several thousand more on the front, I'll be more in tune with tire pressure on this set...... I have heard good reports on the Dunlap trail Max mission , do you know anything about those?........ Another nice video, thanks!

      I've got Shinko 244s on the rear, which have been all around great. I'd say they are 60 / 40 with an off road bias, with a stickier compound than Shinko 700s i think. The front is a balding stock Dunlop. The trail max have been very popular, I hear of a lot of guys running 10k miles plus on them.

I'm just looking at the way things are playing out, and i know we all love our gas rigs, but the government is on a mission to make us not want them.. so logic only suggests they make us not want gas. Which means make it cost more. I've held off buying a boat for this same fear. Would hate to put $75k into a boat i couldn't afford to run in 7 years.

    Thanks for the informative video! This was the kind of reasoning I was giving my fiancé to get a teardrop and will show her this video. We have been trying to decide between teardrops and smaller campers. We have a Subaru outback wilderness with the tow rating of 3500lbs. Most people see that rating and go hog wild looking at the the big campers. I want to stay under 2500 fully loaded. We are a family of 4 (kids are under 5 years old) and most likely we would use a rooftop tent (or I would for sanity reasons lol). We have a few teardrops in mind and going to an overland show in Oct that will have some that we are interested in.

    I make my cowboy coffee at home. The trick is to boil the grounds for a few minutes then after you add the cold water you slowly pour it into another cup. The grounds stay at the bottom if you’re careful enough. My camping go-to is a jet boil with instant coffee. But I will drink just about anything.

    • @getlostbrandon

      French press has been my go to for maybe 6 years now. I just end up drinking too much coffee with it because i never measure how much grinds i've added. I admit the jug of cold brew was a revelation this year for me that came in handy on my Southern Oregon Trip. I've used it a few times this year mostly at hotel settings. I use it for my second coffee of the day at 7pm when i find most small towns stop serving coffee at 3pm.. and then i'm left wondering "well now what?". I do admit i plan to experiment with cowboy coffee more, as I've read letting it boil over lets most of the grinds pour out.

One very important value point we would like add is how fast you can come and go. We have been able to get into parks that are seemingly always booked by taken advantage of cancellations of others. Easy, simple, fast, and so much fun. Also we tow with a Subaru Crosstrek. Great video.

    I have a 2013. The previous owner put a slightly raised wind screen on it I'm only 5'7 so if I hunch just a little it can sustain 80 mph on the highway without too much head buffeting but, I do get pushed around by cross wind and the wind from big trucks. I really like the bike it rides super plush. other than only being able to put one foot flat on the ground at stop lights, it is super easy to ride, basically you don't have to pay so much attention to the bike itself - it just pulls you along. It's not too noisy, it is amazingly smooth for a thumper. I did the basic bitch KLR owner thing by, bungeeing an old milk crate to the cargo rack.

    Nice truck. I still have my 2003 s10 zr2 4.3 vortec. Runs like new. Anyway I'd place my bet on gasoline and Japanese for the future. In my opinion EVs are just not ready for prime time and even if and when they are, there are still many logistics that people aren't considering if they were to go mainstream - I don't see it happening. Isnt Ford cutting production, going back to gas? Our family is looking at either a Forerunner or Tundra.

      Ford is going back to producing more (plug in) PHEV hybrids, which is what Toyota has been scaling towards. The Ramcharger is the only thing in it's class which is a series hybrid (the same powertrain that freight trains use). I consider it "transition" proof for if / when gas hits $10-$15 / gallon after 2030 if the government piles mountain high carbon taxes on fuel to force us out of gas vehicles (this is only speculation). Hi, Brandon. Today is 8/8/24. I just wanted to let you know that the fuel pump on my 2023 KLR650, crapped out and left me stranded, on 8/2. I have heard that there was a factory recall, for some of the '22 KLR's. I have also heard other people talking about how the fuel pumps crapped out on their '23 KLR's. My KLR only has 2,750 miles on it. I am pretty sure that it is going to be covered under Kawasaki's warranty program. It's at the dealership shop now, hopefully they'll call and tell me it's ready soon.

      Breaking down always sucks. I hear about these fuel pump issues from time to time but have had my fingers crossed about the issue. Quickly reading up on forum posts about it, one guy had a similar experience to your story, and he used 3D cycle parts pump to replace it and bought a quantum fuel system as a spare. The 3D cycle parts only lasted another 3,000 miles before failing. The quantum parts made a terrible grinding noise when turned on.. I'll see if i can get any useful info to share on the topic for the masses. Thanks for sharing

      @@getlostbrandon Thanks for the information. I have been considering buying a 3D Cycle Fuel Pump, to have around as a spare. Sounds like a waste of time and money. I hope Kawasaki gets to the bottom of this issue. Now, I am going to be worried about breaking down wherever I go. I am trying to remain positive and polite through this process. It costed me over $200, to get my motorcycle transported to the dealership shop and I did everything myself. Gas prices are ridiculous. I only use 92 Octane, Non-Ethanol gas, in my KLR.

    • @lincolnscott5547
      @lincolnscott5547 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@getlostbrandon The Kawasaki dealership just now called me and said that my fuel pump issue will be covered under warranty. Fuel pumps can not be shipped through air and must only be shipped by ground. They said that it's going to be another week and a half, before my KLR is repaired and ready for me to pickup. That means I will have gone, in the middle of summer, almost 3 weeks without my motorcycle. I am going to recommend to the dealership, they should start keeping at least one Gen 3 KLR Fuel Pump in stock at their store at all times. Apparently, there's a problem (obviously) with the Gen 3 KLR650 fuel pumps. The dealership only compounds the problem, by making a customer wait almost 3 weeks to get their brand new motorcycle out of the repair shop. I would be getting my KLR back today, if the dealership had a fuel pump sitting on their shelves. I am sure that there are going to be plenty of others that will experience Gen 3 fuel pump breakdowns.

    I learn a lot from you man, I crashed a couple weeks ago on my gen3 and I have a battle scar EXACTLY like yours in the same spot coincidentally. I was super depressed about it until I saw this, now I'm hyped to make something badass out of it

    I let my '24 drain oil for 45 minutes, then Googled oil capacity and put in 2.5 qt's. Took me 20 minutes of draining small amounts to finally see oil level at top of sight glass line. Next time Im just buying 2 qt's cuz that would put it in the sight glass window.

    A tear drop / square drop are basically hard sided tents with a chuck box and maybe a water tank on wheels. Essentially its tent camping with out the hassle of set up tear down and loading the gear. I had a tear drop for 5 years loved it the older kids slept in a tent when they came along. We had baby come along and opted to get a tent trailer still no storage fees more space but what a pain in the but setup and take down was plus I had to drag it out and at least partially set it up to load up or unload it, we got a bigger 28 bunk house. Had issues with stuff breaking, found out we just sat around inside more then anything. Not to mention the storage fees, dragging back and forth to load un load and charge batteries winterize de winterize. That’s gone now and I want to build my own tear / square drop to suit my needs. A tear drop is the most convenient option for last minute camping trips

      it came with enough for a full wrap, so yes i have the tank camo and the fairing camo too. I think my feeling was once i wrap the tank, there ain''t no going back without a lot of work to get that glue off. I admit i'm a coward 🤣

      i was just as surprised when the people (if you made it to the end) on their trail 70's didn't know about it, because i rode by their house to get there. Granted, on those roads that's still an hour away

    You need to start the bike and fill the oil filter and it’s cavity then check the oil level. You can’t really prime the oil filter, it will fill up just fine. I change oil at 2000 miles, it’s easy to remember. One KLR expert determined that 2500 miles should be the maximum interval on oil changes because the bike has a roller bearing crankshaft. The bearings cause a shearing action that will thin the oil after that.

      I honestly stopped priming oil filters 25 years ago 😅 . Someday i should look up what the purpose of it is. I think i did it for this video to keep the trolls at bay, but in the end i just made a mess as the oil spilled out the top of the filter lol

    Bold new graphics and a new milk crate, the best of both worlds, put the stickers on the front fender or send them to Biden

    Neat video. FYI, that's the radiator, not a coolant reservoir, voltage regulator/rectifier, a charcoal canister for fuel vapors, and an Aux connector. The relay goes somewhere completely different.
