I'm mildly curious about the dialogue options the Origins get, but not enough to sit through a whole playthrough - and missing out on all of their VA is a massive negative.

I’ve had a few playthroughs as custom and next one, I’ll try origin. I’ll do Gale first, because I love him and TARA! but the lure of slightly different POVs and options intrigues me I do wish that you could pick a stock background for Tav. I’m always from Baldur’s Gate, but I’d love to be from somewhere else. I’d love there to be NPC families you could choose as related to you. Or maybe you could a job you had before being tadpoled. Probably a lot to ask, but it would really flesh things out

I know the ending where you accept your heritage but destroy the brain is technically a bad ending, but it's my favorite. It's not only fantastically done and heartbreaking but also works thematically. Your failure and degradation is Bhaal's biggest failure, so in a way, this is your greatest achievement. The fact no one will knows how close you were to a godhood and how you gave it all up to save everyone, thats your proudest deed. You sacrificed everything and no one other than Withers will even know what you did. True hero safering alone.

Custom is what you start with, origin is for when you know what you want

I like DOS2's approach to Origin Characters much better than BG3's, personally. I think it just comes down to the simple fact that you could customize each character's build to your liking, so your Fane could either be a Tank, or a Rogue, or really anything. Meanwhile Shadowheart's locked into being a Trickery Domain Cleric until you meet Withers.

The Dark Urge made me realize different concept characters are definitely the best way to go. I really hope they do this in future games while offering blank slates is fine, several concept character would be awesome as well.

As a Dragon Age fan, I'm so glad that this game finally came out! Did I have a number of issues with it (a majority that you mentioned)? Yes. But it was so great to be back in Thedas, and the setpieces were gorgeous. Even days after finishing it, I'm still trying to piece my exact thoughts. Thank you for putting this video together!

I’ve been a fan and lover of Dragon Age in particular, and BioWare as a company going back to the original launch of KOTOR more than two plus decades ago - back when the games came on disks. But I don’t know where you go with the love of a franchise when it gets changed from a mature, immersive dark fantasy RPG with meaningful choices into YA style, mostly linear action adventure game with only superficial trappings of an RPG, where choice doesn’t matter much, puzzles where the answers are impatiently handed to you almost before you have a chance to think for yourself, and where they retconned virtually all the lore into an almost totally different universe from the one we all committed to and fell in love with. Is that even a “dragon age” game at all? Or is it just another shallow action adventures game for (mostly) children plastered over with a DA veneer to to try to fool people into buying it on the reputation of those older games? Exactly when does it become false advertising? Honestly, I don’t know, but I’m not nibbling on the bait this time. BioWare has officially lost me after 20 plus years of loyalty.

I enjoyed the combat in the veilguard and no matter what character I make I'm drawn to the mage class lol

I was wary of the game since the first trailer. I saw a few reviews, watched a few playthroughs and sadly came to the conclusion that this isn't a game for those who loved Origins, so I skipped. The dialogues being written as if the game is targeted to young kids, the cringe moments that feel completely out of place, the simplified Mass Effect 2 combat mechanics. If it didn't have the DA in its name I would have thought that it was some new IP, tbh. I'm happy that you enjoyed it, or parts of it at least, and kudos to not being afraid to criticise its flaws. As you said nothing is perfect.

Why does ur Rook have a 5 o'clock shadow on her face? It looks weird. Dont think I've noticed it on male Rooks. Strange...

I fully agree with all your points but to also add onto the companion bit I feel like our Rook/the MC was the most side lined character in the game with the most shallow writting out of all the other DA MC, and felt like the entirety of Act 2 was Rook being a live in therapist and not a friend and the way the companions even talk to Rook felt like they talerated them and I’ve 100% the game found all the secrets did everyone’s quest and somehow the world still felt so empty if that makes sense. I just hope instead of ignoring all the cirques BioWare will learn from this game and listen to the fans. I want another dragon age game, I want a new protagonist and an interesting story

Hello dear Lisa! I really enjoyed your thoughts on Dragon Age. We have similar opinions in certain areas, but overall, I absolutely love this game and I'm so excited to see what BioWare does next. Unfortunately, I haven't beaten the game yet, but I am romancing Davrin and it is very, very good.❤

The companions overall are fine. Emmrich and Davrin are even great. I have love for Bellara buut overall there is a massive issue with the companions: they are way too static. You never feel their growth. Yes, there are arcs but they feel minor. Let's use Origins and Alistair as an example of what I'm talking about. Alistair begins as a bit of a wimp. He's incapable of taking charge and he's super insecure about himself. As the game goes on, he begins to become more assertive. He confronts his own insecurities and by the end of the game, you feel that because he will refuse your choices. In the Landsmeet, he can kill Loghain despite what you say. If not, he will leave you. If you romance Alistair, he will not allow you to kill the Archdemon, choosing to sacrifice himself for you. He takes over the game for a moment for you, something he would've never done before. The difference is in dialogue and in gameplay and that makes you feel his growth. One of my favorite moments in Origins in every playhrough is that first time companions begin to talk to you different. Alistair goes from "What you need?" to "yeeees?" Sten begins to talk to you which feels enormous, Morrigan shows emotion breaking her facade. Those transformations make it feel like our relationships are evolving. Bellara doesn't change nor do anything that takes you by surprise. She feels like the same person by the end with only minor growth. She doesn't act differently. She doesn't talk to you differently. Neve is Neve, inspiration or protector, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two. I'm not sure how much of a difference there is between Hero Neve and Neve from the beginning of the game. Veilguard companions feels more stagnant.

My headcanon is that whoever decided on the pronunciation of qamek in this game dislikes comic books. Exhibit A: they pronounce qamek like comic. Exhibit B: qamek makes its victim a mindless husk. In all seriousness, I don't remember qamek ever being mentioned in a game. Saar-qamek was mentioned in DA2 and Inquisition but the only place I remember qamek before Veilguard is the Those Who Speak comic.

Great review, Lisa! I agree with pretty much everything you said. Hopefully we can see (and play) a next Dragon Age game where development is focused on a single-player experience from the start.

I have 90% of the same views you do and I’m on a third playthrough 😅 I will say, playing a different faction does give you a different lens or angle to view the story and adds a much different flavor and influences you to change the choices you make as that character. It’s fairly subtle, but it kept me playing to see what else was different that I could find or what lore I was able to find that I didn’t in another playthrough via conversations with your faction. I will say that my love for picking up lore bits may color my opinion as the system is still fairly simplistic in the weight of the choices you make during the game which turns some people off.

It took me so long to figure out how to stop having a five o'clock shadow on my Rook.

Just a thought and a very simple exlanation, why characters and romances feel not as deep as in the forst 3 DA games (David Gaider mentioned this, too in one of his posts): If every character is bisexual and can be romanced by everyone, you give the player more options. But you also loose the opportunity to add more depth to the character by having own interests. For example, imagine if Cullen or Alistair would be romanceable by a male character. It does not fit to how hthey are written and it would need adjustments to make them consistent again. Adjustments, that need to cut some very interesting aspects of their backstory and personality. Same with Dorian, Cassandra etc. Or Vivienne having her own goals and not being romanceable at all. It gives the writers the possibility to add so much depth to these characters.

I loved Origins, 2 & Veilguard. Tried as much, I just can't take Inquisition. Veilguard just flowed well for me. Sure not everything is perfect like the monster models but all games will have their weak side. But so far, Im liking Veilguard. Im still playing it

The combat was a huge step up from what it was for sure, honestly one of the funnest combat systems ive played in a while in fantasy style game
