Laudato si’: Polarization and Conversion | The Way Forward 2024
Bishops, theologians, and lay leaders gathered at the University of San Diego in February 2024 for the third ecclesial gathering known as “The Way Forward,” an effort to foster honest dialogue within the Catholic Church and to promote the path set out by the Second Vatican Council and Pope Francis. In this year’s meeting the focus was on implementing Francis’s landmark encyclical on care of the earth, Laudato si’.

They were all into modern technology to the point they tried a new technology of how to produce offsprings to continue their faith without males/females having intercourse. HUmm wonder how that worked out for them. They must have overlooked the scripture in Hebrews 13 where is states "marriage is honorable in all things and the bed is undefiled." It is ancient and it is not a new thing but it still works.

My ex step grandmother grew up with the Shakers. Her name was Kelly I believe she changed her name. She has two adopted children and my ex step father went by Mike even though his name was Vernon. We weren’t allowed to watch Nickelodeon as kids when we visited her. She’s was a pain in the ass along with her son Vernon. Vernon was an abusive piece of 💩 and never worked, made my teenage years hell until I was sent to placement and my mother divorced him. Always hitting me, touching me where he shouldn’t have been. I’m so glad I got away from him and my mom saw his true colors. I guess he dates another woman now with a child. I pray he doesn’t beat and molest the child like he did to me.

The Mass is imperfect but not blasphemy partly because Leonard Bernstein wasn't a Roman Catholic. Only Believers know where to hit where it hurts., which was never Bernstein's intention anyway. The Mass is intensely idealistic. I speculate it has inspired more than a few conversions to Catholicism, which is about as far from blasphemy

When Cohen was asked by a fan "What does Christ mean to you?", he wrote back: "Dear Walter, Last year I tried to put it this way: Was looking at the crucifix. Got something in my eye. A Light that doesn't need to live and doesn't need to die. What's written in the Book of Love is strangely incomplete, 'til witnessed here in time and blood a thousand kisses deep." He seems to be saying that what's written in the old testament is incomplete until it is witnessed in the crucifixion (blood) of Christ and his love. He says that he's talking about Christ, and Christ's blood on the cross while he lovingly helped humanity is one of the most central parts of Christianity. I don't think his use of the word "blood" can mean anything else. And he poetically refers to the deep sacrificial love of Christ as "blood a thousand kisses deep." Also, Jesus said that he didn't come to replace the law, but to "fulfill" the law ... and Cohen seems to be saying a similar thing: that Jesus makes the incomplete old testament become complete through his deep sacrificial love. Plus Cohen conveys the important concept that it's important for us to witness this. For example, at almost every single Mass, the last supper with Christ talking about his blood is re-enacted for several minutes so everyone attending is witnessing it. Sometimes non-Christians don't understand that, and likewise don't understand why Christians put much emphasis on re-tracing, describing and illustrating the specific things of the time of Jesus's passion and crucifixion. Or why Christians primarily use such a somber symbol as a crucifixion cross. But Cohen not only gets it: he says that it's a major part of what Christ means to him too - to witness Christ's immense sacrificial love on the cross. I'm not saying that Cohen became fully Christian. He was unable to commit to hardly anything except for writing songs, so for him to commit long-term to a different religion than what he was raised in was probably not at all doable for him. He said the only reason he was at the zen monastery was because of his affection for the roshi teacher there, and the schedule gave him some structure that he craved, while still allowing him to indulge his vices - for example: the roshi and monks would get drunk on hard alcohol. But he didn't connect much with the philosophy or teachings - and gravitated mostly towards Judaism and Christ. Despite his having love for individual women, he couldn't commit to any of them. Likewise, he said he had mystical experiences of Christ, and also that Christ was "unparalelled" in all of history in his teachings and wisdom. But despite those two rather incredible things, he didn't really pursue it or reap the benefits of pursuing it. My guess is that he would have been much happier if he had pursued it. And that he also would have been happier if he had either committed to one woman or at least stopped having casual sex with random people. The latter is a recipe for unhappiness. He's definitely one of the great songwriters of all time, and managed to poetically capture the essence of Christianity better than most poets and songwriters. And also capture other aspects of the human condition. Some of his political songs are excellent. His song about the French resistance is brilliant. And he also was able to make beautiful music to accompany the lyrics. I'm certainly a fan of his and thankful for him. Here's a link to a copy of the transcript from a Google Groups page from 2004 from around the time of Cohen’s online chat with fans: groups.google.com/g/alt.meditation.transcendental/c/OASW9qE5MIs Here is a paywalled article in Danish advertising the online chat event prior to its occurrence: politiken.dk/kultur/art4945100/Chat-med-Leonard-Cohen Here is a paywalled article in Norwegian with a transcript of the chat: www.vg.no/rampelys/musikk/i/xRPl5X/live-chat-med-cohen-18-oktober

Whatever you think about the political theory I'm not sure why no one mentions communism/ socialism when speaking on the Shakers. Frederick Engels, the co writer of The Communist Manifesto also considered one of the "fathers of communism" had specifically used the success of the Shakers as an argument for said theory in several of his writings. I've had to do my own research to find this and cant find it on any official historical Shaker Website or documentary on the Shakers. Its a very important part of the story that for some odd reason, doesn't like to be talked about.

How about a "Way Back" from the brink. Back to a time when abortion and contraception didn't sever the branch from the vine. Back to a time when marriage was a fruitful sacrament between, one man, one woman, and God. Back to a time when we had a Catholic medical system and a Catholic educational system to deliver both the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. I recently attended a mass at a local Shrine performed by our bishop. The mass was packed, and the average age was 75+. This parish is the combined remains of three other parishes that have been consolidated. This consolidation has been occurring since the 1960s. I thought how sad, that in 20 years all of this will be gone. The congregation was actually singing the hymns louder than the choir because singing is worship that can be led by the choir, but not outsourced to the choir. It was like smelling the beauty of a cut rose. I as a younger person was able to enjoy the beauty and fellowship of this Mass, full well knowing in 20 years most of these parishioners will be in heaven. The Shrine and grounds will be sold off because there will be no more parishioners, and we'll have another condo development or strip mall in what was a sacred place. Why is yet another congregation to be cut from the vine? Because of the promotion of contraception and abortion. The evil pharmaceutical industry continues to promote eugenics, as they did in Africa and Asia with the pushing of the Tetanus vaccine to sterilize. How quick the Church has been to crush the Latin mass, while the Vatican became the first country to mandate vaccinations of it's citizens. These vaccinations inflicted miscarriages on so many. Like standing by the fire, and hearing Peter deny Christ, I like Peter have nowhere else to turn than Christ. The Way Back is perhaps the path that Candace Ownes is currently following. The same path that Abby Johnson followed. A faith that promotes Hope as an essential leg in the three-legged stool, for sharing Hope is an essential act of worship. We have a world that needs RCIA, for the Church can not be conformed to meet the world where it is. We must invite the world two by two into the ark of the Church as Noah did. To the beauty and protection of the Church during the flood. The Church radiates Truth, through Faith, Hope, and Charity. Like Gideon, we may be asked to turn more and more away. The Gardener will continue to prune branch after branch and fertilize the roots until we have the army that Lord wants us to have. Else we are the fig tree, that produced no figs out of season. In every season the Church is called to produce great fruit. Like Peter himself, let us find the path back to Christ.
