I had to go with Wildside over Skid Row, I love both albums and have a lot of great memories with the first Skid Row album, but ultimately I like "Under the Influence" better. I really like these album wars videos. Some ideas could be Tigertailz "Bezerk" vs Sleeze Beez "Screwed Blued 'n Tattooed"; Vain "No Respect" vs Shotgun Messiah "S/T"; and Dirty Looks "Cool From the Wire" vs Rhino Bucket "S/T"
Great show guys. Really cool idea doing a VS. with these two albums. Skid Row was the last cassette tape I ever bought before I got a CD player so I wore the heck out of that tape. Mind you I was 12 years old, and I didn't have a large collection, so this album had a mega influence on me with how much it got played. All that said, I got Wildside at 96 and Skid Row at 89. Kind of where I expected them to land. Under the Influence is one of my favorite albums of all time.
I'm from Southern California and Wildside was just another club band and that never really made it. Honestly, I think I listened to the album once 30 years ago and it never blew my socks off. Maybe I need to revisit it again.
Wish these 2 had come out closer together, since music had started changing a bit by the time the WS album came out. Would have made for a bit more of a head to head comparison. This is definitely one of my new favorite channels!

I saw Skid Row on the Slave Tour , with Pantera in tow . They were a monster live at that juncture . In my list of primed up bands at their height , Motley in 90 , GnR 91 , Skid in 92 , Black Crowes for 30 years ..
I enjoyed this. I'm still not sure what band has the better debut yet. I would love to hear you do one with the band Slikk Toxic. They had a tremendous debut and also Vain with No Respect is a killer debut. Maybe Black n Blue or Kickaxe. So many bands should have been bigger.
Theres been a few times where there is a siren at the start of a song, im driving, and it scares the shit outa me. Because for a split second I'm thining "shit! I've been blaring music and the cops are chasing me & I couldn't hear them" Then Dream Police starts or something and I un-shit my pants.

In preparation for this video I spent a couple of days with the Wildside album. It’s really good. If it had hit in 89 to 90 it probably would have blown up. One minor gripe is that in 92’ they were still using hair metal cliche’s . Regardless, the songs were strong and memorable. I’ll have to go with Skid Row as the better of the two albums. That’s another band you got me into, Anthony. How about comparing Shout At The Devil vs the first WASP album?
Never listened to Wildside until listening to THMG. So, 10 things I think I think about U.T.I. 1. Lad in Sin ties with Hang on Lucy for the best song on the album. Even though it’s almost 6 minutes long, I did get close to getting bored. 2. If not for a killer solo, So Far Away would be a skipper, not that it sucks, just not a stand out. 3. They started back to back songs, Just Another Night and Looks Like Love, with two of the most lazy songwriting tropes… Outside my window…. Woke up this morning 4. All the ballads on UTI sound like they were circa 85-88. 5. They wasted the amazingly catchy riff in Looks Like Love on an average song 6. Wildside’s singer sounds like Mark Slaughter and Axle Rose had a kid…that’s a compliment 7. The best guitar solo on UTI is in Clock Strikes. 8. Hair of The Dog is 100x better than the original or any of the covers of the Nazareth’s Hair of The Dog. 9. I think you guys ranked U.T.I. higher than Skid Row because you probably were over exposed to Skid Row vs U.T.I. 10. I think it didn’t make sense to put Skid Row self-titled vs UTI, which came out in 92. It should have been Slave To The Grind vs UTI. And Slave would win by a mile.
skid row is my favorite band of all time...every era (save for the harnell, and zp). favorite album was subhuman race. the first record is a very special record, and i think every metal fan has a place in their heart for it. even death metal guys love that record. that speaks volumes to me about the impact that record had. guys who were preaching about morbid angel and deicide will say that skid row album was great... wildside's album was earmarked for success. from getting signed, to recording at 5150 with their hero evh, the band was on a path to being a platinum success before the album was delayed time and again, and then came out so late in the game that it had no chance of getting played. so much talent there, and the songwriting was fantastic. from a consistency mark, i'd give wildside the edge. every song on the record was a banger, and the flow of the album was leading up the my favorite, clock strikes. from a quality mark, i'd give the edge to skiddy row. i think the guitar playing is better in skid row, the vocals are stronger, and the songs were written so that the listener could adapt themselves to their everyday life. that was the beauty of skid row...no matter what the song was on the first album...you either knew someone, lived it, or could envision what they were singing about. the only flaw on the wildside record for me is drew hannah...the guy was right up their with axl, keifer, and the screecher's of the era. but for me, bach was the ultimate front man, and while there is so much tape out their of bach performing, there really isn't for hannah. bach was a state of mind, while hannah was only just a good frontman. that all being put...i give skid row the edge in this battle. kinda funny that wildside's guitar player wound up playing skid row covers with sebastian for years...nobody from skid row is playing wildside cover's though :)
Both great albums but tbf Skid Row already did it 3 years earlier and WildSide didn't offer anything new, hence had SR for the win at 90 over WS at 84. Good show \m/
you know what? that is a fantastic point that should really be prominent in this discussion. skid row had done this album a good few year's earlier, and while the wildside album is fantastic, it didn't add anything to the genre that skid row hadn't already done. really good point here!
