Exploring the chill side of cruising with tips on how to save time, money and grief on your cruise vacations.
How to avoid NOISY cruise cabins and what to do if you get one
The last thing you want to worry about on your cruise vacation is being kept up in the middle of the night or woken early in the morning from loud noises entering your cabin. Every cruise ship, no matter how luxurious, has hundreds of problem cabins above a nightclub, below the lido deck or beside noisy equipment that lets in a lot of noise. If you’re sensitive to loud noises like me, you want to avoid these cabins at all costs because with most ships sailing with every cabin occupied these days, it’s more difficult than ever to get moved. In this episode of the Chill Cruiser, I’ll show you how to avoid noisy cabins and what you can do if you end up getting one. #cruisetips #cruise

Sun Princess: Big tradeoffs limit the appeal of this polarizing ship (Full Review)
มุมมอง 5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Sun Princess is a polarizing new ship that’s full of tradeoffs. On the one hand it has roomy cabins, a vibrant main atrium, a dramatic dome-shaped multipurpose solarium and a large variety of food options from fast food to specialty dining. But these features come at a heavy cost. Even though this is the biggest ship in the Princess fleet, it has some of its smallest venues. The layout is very ...
21 HITS and MISSES on Princess' polarizing new ship: Sun Princess
มุมมอง 9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I sailed on Sun Princess for several weeks and put the many big changes Princess introduced with this new Sphere class ship to the test. In some areas like cabins and fast food they’ve taken a major step forward but in many more key areas like entertainment venues and amenities, they’ve unfortunately taken two big steps back. Princess’ newest Royal class ships have had rave reviews and it’s an ...

Sun Princess is very different compared to other Princess ships …and very confusing. If you’re used to Royal or Grand class ships, there’s a huge learning curve when it comes to the layout. The buffet’s moved to the middle of the ship, a lot more venues and services are clustered in the piazza area with other services normally in the piazza now on lower decks surrounded by cabins. 10 things you should know before planning a Princess cruise
Thank you! I'm booked on the Sun Princess for a transatlantic on March 9, 2025 from Ft Lauderdale to Southampton. Princess used to be my favorite line, but I was disappointed on my last cruises, to Hawaii and Alaska, and I expect to find disappointments on my upcoming trip, too. I just returned from a west-bound transatlantic on Holland American, spending a total of 30 days on the Nieuw Statendam. It was wonderful. I don't have the loyalty status on HAL that I do on Princess, but we shall see what I chose next time...
I just think elite guests should be allowed only... As a shareholder as well, the reason why they don't care is because that. Lounger is already paid for so why would they have a no show policy on a chair? That's already been paid for...
[part 2]. We also experienced many issues from a blocked toilet as well as nearly every ladies toilet I attempted to use on the ship had at least one cubicle out of order and in one case only one toilet worked out of the 3 available… this was a real pain and made for a few lengthy waits as well as a dash one evening when I was feeling ill and the nearest toilet was out of order. We were also woken one night when an acrid burning smell like burning rubber and smoke filled our cabin. When I spoke with guest services about it, it appears it occurred in several other cabins too but I was given no explanation as to what the cause was. Another issue we noticed on more than one occasion was several bar staff at bars yet they seemed to ignore you and were pottering about as if doing tasks, it felt quite rude but I think this was not the norm as the majority of the staff we interacted with were exceptionally polite. I think the food was okay but we were disappointed by the choices as it was all very repetitive and when we decided to try another restaurant for a change we were surprised when our meal dragged out to 2hrs!!!! One of our biggest let downs was the casino whereby the craps table didn’t open till 2000 hrs and closed at 0030 even when there were people wanting to play!!!! What kind of cruise ship is this? I felt like most evenings the ship was really dead in areas, with huge bars that could hold 200 people but barely had twenty in. My husband and I are by no means party animals but we do like some fun and atmosphere… this felt like a place where cruisers go to waste away with boredom. My 15 year old son was totally bored as the teens club was age 13-17 (why on earth would a 17 year old want to hang with a 13 year old?)… he went to the club to find it empty on several occasions and it took half way through the cruise for him to find a few other teens to hang with as of the 100 or so on board the max he ever saw at the club was about 15 and on at least one occasion he was the only kid to turn up.
[part 2] Just had an 8 day cruise from Orlando to the Western Caribbean (15-23 Dec - Roatan, Belize City, Costa Maya & Cozumel) with my husband (age 56) and son (15). I am 54 and this was our first time on a Princess cruise and I am sorry to say may well be our last! Not only did I feel like I was in a retirement home as the average age was 65+ but the entertainment was severely lacking and a real snooze fest. Most events only lasted 45 minutes and the main entertainment seemed to be quizzes in the various bars and a few musicians round and about from piano players and singers to guitar duos and violinists. The only decent entertainment we saw was a young British singer & guitarist Emma Lauran and a pianist and Singer (Brian Johnston???) who were both excellent… all the others were just okay. We never made it to the theatre shows as it seemed a real hassle queuing for a decent seat for something that would only last 45 minutes and after speaking with several other passengers it seems we didn’t miss much as they weren’t the full scale productions were used to from other cruises we had taken but were instead just more singers. It seems princesses idea of entertainment was just putting on health and wellbeing stuff - in the hope selling you things you don’t need - rather than providing the entertainment their websites promise. We were really fed up to discover that all the comedians were cancelled and in our cruise there were only two nights that they were on vice the 3 shows each night we had experienced on previous cruise lines.
Suites notalwaysa quiet location
I was in the Ruby in 23 with an 11 day cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Columbia, Jamaica, Cayman Islands. I relive those days all the time. I loved everything about my cruise. While on the Ruby, I have to admit, I hung out in the Jewelery Store. I fell in love with the staff and how kind they were! I remember Vivek but no other names. I can see them clearly in my memories. Two girls and three men worked there. I wish I could email them! I have been looking for more Ruby cruises. I wanted to take my grandson on a Ruby cruise. Problem, his high school graduation happens, then he will be packing up and moving off to University. I hope he starts in our state but he could be going out of state. A few years ago, I went on a 4 day cruise on Carnival. I have told my brothers how much I loved Ruby way more than Carnival. The entire staff of Ruby were so kind, great sense of humor, helpful. Our Steward was fabulous!! I want to cruise Ruby again. Probably south rather than going north. I have to have the pool!! 😅😅
When Air Canada or West Jet denies your claim, it can pay off to appeal, although it is a very time consuming and slow process. I did get some compensation in the end after initially getting the beyond our control blather.
Thanks. I've always selected my cabin carefully but for my upcoming Princess trip two weeks from today the only choice by the time I booked was a guarantee. I am still anxiously waiting my assignment. Your advice about rooms opening up due to no-shows is very helpful and while I hope I don't need it I will keep it in mind
Thank you for the feedback. If you don't like the cabin they assign you, there's nothing to lose by reaching out to them to see if other options are available. I've heard folks have had a lot of success fixing issues using the chat function on the Princess site. I hope you have an amazing cruise!
Thanks, a well put together review, and just confirms that we won't be going on any of these class of Princess ships; reminds me (nightmarishly) of a recent 4 days on Virgin, NEVER again. Our previous 6 princess cruise ships have been the smaller older style (traditional cruising), which suits us to a tee, as does HAL.
Thank you for the feedback and for sharing your perspective!
Good advice I always pay the little extra on cruises to choose my own room after checking all the boxes on my checklist including researching the deck plans I don’t like noise in my cabin that I can control so I always choose cabins with other cabins bellow above and sis by side no connecting cabins and at least 2 decks bellow the lido deck
Very smart!
TY Andrew. This is a major worry of mine.
Thank you - I hope the tips help!
Andrew, great video! Thanks for the tips!
Thank you Mark!
We thoroughly enjoyed cruising with Princess. If I had one complaint it is that they have the smallest state rooms we’ve stayed in. Every other Cruiseline that we have Cruised has always had a couch in the state room. On Princess, you need to pay more for a couch. 🤦🏻♀️ Additionally, their balconies tend to be on the small side as well, unless you book a premium.
I agree on both counts. This is something they addressed with the cabins in their new ship Sun Princess - unfortunately they took a step back in other areas.
I just got off the Sun 12/14/24 and I can vouch the work is all done. I went to all the production shows in the arena and never waited more than a half hour, but I had the Premiere package so I had seats waiting for me (the performers were amazing). I never made it to the dome for shows, just in the day, but they need to revamp the loungers (which split apart into chairs) to maximize the seating capacity
Thank you for sharing your experience and the updates. I'm glad the work is finally done.
Wow
Hello fellow Ottawan. I've only been on two cruises but my wife and I are planning one for next year. She's a more experienced cruiser and she just got off of the new Princess ship (Star or Sky, not sure what it's called), and she was extremely disappointed. She's much more interested in travelling again on the Enchanted. Your thoughts on the new Princess ships, especially concerning the theater layout and capacity?
Hi! I was also very disappointed with the new ship (Sun Princess). The theater (and the seats) got smaller even though the ship is 25% bigger. I would also recommend Enchanted much more than Sun. I've done reviews of both! Here's my review of Enchanted: th-cam.com/video/V6lFyiTH5uc/w-d-xo.html. I did a full review of Sun (th-cam.com/video/Zgi2Qp1u7yQ/w-d-xo.html) as well as a summary of the big hits and misses (th-cam.com/video/hjonehlKDso/w-d-xo.html). Hope that helps!
Princess needs to get a grip and pay attention-too late to jump ship from the Sun early next year-never again and the sanctuary is No Deal!
I want quiet intimate music venues and hope the medallion improves before February!
Looks like they have sorted out the Medallions - folks who have shared their more recent experiences in the comments haven't had any issues.
Try HAL next time, especially on the smaller ships. 2500 passengers is usually my max.
That theater is gross size, hate the seats and ‘the pool’ is a joke. Glad to have group private parties as an option!
Thanks for this. I love Princess but the design of this ship does not appeal or me. Sky and Regal are my favs so sticking with the Royal class until Princess gets this mess straightened out. The Dome situation is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! (I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the Dome is dumb!)
You complained the entire video, I did this trip and it was fabulous. Shame on you!
You did this trip at some unknown time in the past on an unspecified ship and that means my trip should be just as good and therefore I should be shamed for not having the exact same opinion as you?! Shame on YOU! If you’re only interested in opinions that are the same as yours this channel is definitely not for you.
I went during the begging of December. I never had any issues with the maeldallions. The elevators were neat but during high congestion times, like getting on and off, would cause them to run slow. All of the parties going on all over the ship was very different from the old ones. I notice pixels were going out on the video wall on the pool deck. One of the mounting bracket for the pool deck line arrays broke and they had to jerry ridge it together. Also, they rarely played movies on the pool deck during sea days only at night and when we were docked. Also did not like, on deck 6, you had to pass through a smoking casino to get from the piazza to the theatre. My only complaint for the rooms, and I had a mini suite, was the motion sensing lighting. I liked it for the bathroom but there 2 in the room in a cabinet on each side of the bed. If I would pass them to get to the bathroom from the couch bed, and they would turn on waking everyone else up, and would take for ever to turn back off.
Thank you Greg for sharing your experience!
A glass door on my shower doesn't make up for this cluster f*** of a ship with no intimate music venues and no SEA VIEWS!!!!! Dreading my booked winter cruise---thank goodness it's only 7 days! AND NO WALKABLE PROMENADE?????? NO SHADE in the for fee sanctuary!!!

The one good thing about this horrible experience was that you made new friends
Totally agree! Despite the stress, our time in St. Thomas was one of the highlights of that year.
This might be the most well made cabin tour/review I've ever seen. great job
Q: Does Princess offer casino benefits like the free cruises to Americas only, or do Canadians qualify as well?
Since I’m Canadian I can definitely confirm that we qualify! I think most countries qualify - where things differ is that they can’t make onboard free cruise offers on some itineraries like Australia (just free play).
Thank you so much for this video… we just booked the enchanted princess yesterday so this video is perfect timing🚢
Great choice! I hope you have a wonderful cruise!
I found the music is way too loud in the piazza and not overly impressed with the fitness classes, zumba , Im not there for the entertainment of other people in the coffee lounge, preferred it in the vista lounge.
I just sailed last week on Caribbean Princess. Even after dry dock, we had a clogged sink for over a day. Several others had other plumbing issues. I agree the ship is too old and has issues with bathrooms on the ship was not up to standard. The food was also below my standard, although the Pizza was good. Not for me for sure.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I'm curious. Which of rhe Princess ships is your favorite? We sailed on rhe Sun Princess back in May. We felt it was too big for our taste. And for many of the reasons you mentioned, we won't go back. It was our first Princess cruise. There were several people that told us they didn't like this new design. In October, we sailed the Majestic Princess out of Los Angeles. We were very disappointed. The rooms were small and musty. The casino was way too small and overcrowded. The food wasn't very good and the wine was horrible. The service was the worst I'd ever experienced. We sat for 30 minutes in Alfredo's waiting to have our order taken. In November we sailed on HAL Niew Statendam and loved it, as we loved the Koningsdam a year ago. We're willing to give Princess another try since we have 2 balcony comps from the casino. We just don't know which one.
Sorry to hear about your experiences on Sun and Majestic. These are actually my 2 least favorite ships. I’ve enjoyed my experiences on almost every other Princess ship I’ve sailed on (Caribbean, Ruby and Enchanted). I’ve also really enjoyed my experiences on Holland America’s Pinnacle class ships. If you’re looking for ships with some traditional charm, I would go for Grand class ships like Caribbean. If you prefer more modern ships then I would definitely go with Enchanted or Discovery. See my reviews here: th-cam.com/video/V6lFyiTH5uc/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/sBpW0T4k6V8/w-d-xo.html
We were on Sun Princess in Nov 2024 - some issues were reconciled - beautiful cabins with great showers - many venues were TOO SMALL - we ate at pm - then went to get a seat in Theater - that wasn't too bad but even though Piazza was multiple stores many times no seats available 😢
Thank you for sharing your experience.
My thoughts on Haven: First letting you know I have been a headliner performer on NCL, Celebrity, Crystal and Cunard in the 90s. So I know cruising pretty well. You get what you pay for.- and it is important to ask and communicate. HAVEN is by far the best cruising experience I have ever had and I have spent more for supposed top lines like Cunard. I'm fortunate to have a house in Bluff Park of Long Beach so hopping on NCL for Mexican Riviera cruise was a easy. No long flights and 20 minute to the ship. I appreciate the VIP entry and not having deal with "muggles" and long lines. We were escorted to private elevator to Haven. If you take the time to talk to your butler before cruising (most can set up a 20 minute get to know you call), then your butler can learn your patterns. I told him I was plant based vegan and like tea, scones, fruit in the morning and also what books I want from the library etc. Everything was already there in the room when we arrived. Sadly many people buy into .. you have to dine in a restaurant etc. I would never in a million years do a nasty buffet with screaming kids and crowds. Your butler can set up dining from any the haven or any restaurant on the ship in your private suite and with Haven .. unless booking a remodeled state that is not really Haven suite... you should have a table on the balcony ample for dining al fresco and second dining indoors. So my friends and I had just opted for private dining. The butler was amazing and talked to Haven chef's for us so not only did we have delicious vegan meals but they were catered to our desires. So much nicer to not have to deal with typical crowds. Our butler saw to escorted entry to shows to avoid crowds. As for relaxing by the pool the area .. Sure there were a few kids in Haven but when that happened we just moved to jacuzzi or sauna areas that were not really in use. It felt like we had the whole ship to ourself. When any problem arrived with "muggles" .. I just talk to the concierge or butler on best way to avoid people or which lounges with music were quieter. As a jazz artist myself, the musicians on the ship treated me like NCL royalty so I enjoyed performing a few numbers and doing a jam set. I do love to dance and visited the disco and though crowds got big .. I can deal with a couple of hours of it when I know at any time I can retreat back to my suite. My butler saw to plenty of hot towels, terry cloth spa robe, took care of spa massage bookings etc. Another tip: It was n't that expensive if you book 5 day Mexican on semi off season. We cruised in October. The weather was still beautiful and calmer than Summer crowds. And I spent only about $3500. So that is not bad at all. Yes 7 and 10 days might go up to $10,000 but I rather pay that for VIP luxury then deal with typical white trash families and their screaming kids, unsanitary buffets and typical kiddy attractions like water park, arcade. It is a choice. If you are classy and sophisticated you can still enjoy that experience on NCL. We opted for afternoon tea in our suite, quiet wine /cocktails, long massages etc. You can truly personalize your Haven experience if you are in good communication with your butler and concierge. If you are retired adult, or sophisticated single and traveling with 1 or 2 best friends .. this is heaven. Haven I wouldn't recommend for families with kids. Yes it is quieter but all the attractions for kids etc are on lower decks which means a lot of commuting and frankly .. I don't want the families with kids in Haven LOL. I was so thankful for the adults only areas. To avoid muggles and their kids... travel when Kids are in school. This is why my favorite time to travel is Octoberish. I love Halloween and autumn flavors but kids are usually still in school .. Haven was pure bliss .. I would never travel summer when more families take their kids on cruises. Remember it is a choice. Do a little research. You deserve the best cruise of your life --watch videos, ask questions and get what you want. I still have happy dreams about the delicious food I had. I had a wonderful wild mushroom pasta, cherries jubilee, fabulous Mexican cuisine with blood orange margaritas that were to day for,-- and so appreciate the privacy of my terrace perfect for board games, reading, and relaxing. And Al our butler was so speedy on anything we needed. Truly 5 star. Also when possible with Haven book smaller trips instead of out NYC not only do you save money but less crowds usually and easy access if you are in CA like me. I haven't done Alaska with NCL yet but there is a a cruise from SF so might do that in the future. Having done all of the Caribbean in 90s with NCL.. I admit I prefer to stay CA coastal. Also of course common sense! AKA I always bring Air borne, motion sickness herbs and you will avoid food poisoning and problems if you stay out of the buffets. SO nasty. I once let a friend talk me into a Carnival Cruise and I was appalled by the McDonald's like food court with kids putting their hands in food. I know of no few than 6 people that got food poisoning on ships due to buffets.
I don't smoke but dont mind others that do, I had no idea there were so many health nazis in the comments here. If people smoking or drinking while on their vacation and enjoying themselves disturbs you so badly, then maybe find another vacation?! Yeesh.
Good unbiased review
Thank you!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. My European cruise adventure is done and I posted several videos but there are many more to come as I tackle an epic backlog! Thank you again!
My wife and I just spent 7 days on the Sun in the East Caribbean (Nov 16 to 23, 2024), and very much enjoyed our trip, and have a few similar comments, however none that I felt were so serious that it “ruined” or tainted our trip. First, I did not notice any construction or damage, such as broken glass, seems that work has completed. I do agree that the venues are smaller than they should be for a ship of >4000 passengers, but at the same time, we always got into any show we wanted, and never went more than 30-45 mins early, and always had good seats going that early, but people were still getting seats just minutes before showtime. So this was not an issue for us. The Dome schedule was light (presumably because there was an acrobatic accident on prior sailing resulting in injury), but we did see a magician in there. It wasn’t even full, and he was only “ok”, not overly impressed with that act. I agree that the washroom was tough to find, lol. Conversely, the production shows in the Arena were top notch, and usually filled up by showtime, but pretty much anyone who wanted to get in was able to do so, from what I could tell. It is worth noting that the time we sailed would be “off peak”, there were not many kids or young families on board, which reduces lines I am sure. (I heard they were expecting 700-800 kids this week during US Thanksgiving! 😐) One more omission you didn’t mention, which was a surprise to us (despite watching lots of videos before embarking), is that there is NO Art Gallery (or auction) on this ship, which was very disappointing to my wife, as we have taken to collecting art on prior cruises. However, we heard during a session with crew in the Piazza at the end of the trip that they “could not fit one in” with the original design (with 20 decks and 177K tons?), but they plan to find a way to do so after the ship warranty (1 year) is up, along with some other changes. This was our first experience with Medallion (our last Princess cruise was 2016), and we enjoyed that technology a lot. The app was decent, navigation to areas (or members of your party) is a bit hit & miss. Strangely, the Push notification in the app worked for the first day to two, then stopped, so you would only know you had a message if you went into the app and checked, which is useless fora communications app. The OceanReady for ordering food & drinks is a great idea (tried it a couple times, delivery time was reasonable), however the menu selection is very limited. Overall, we very much enjoyed our trip - and really made use of our Premier package 😉 - and would likely go on the ship again if the timing and itinerary makes sense. However, our next cruise is likely to be a family trip on the Enchanted in August next year (2025), we have a deposit down for a sailing on that one. 🙂. Cheers from Toronto area. 🇨🇦
Thank you Kevin for your feedback and for sharing your experience. I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise and didn't experience most of the issues I did. That's very interesting that changes are planned after the ship's warranty is up. I would highly recommend Enchanted - it's definitely one of my favorite Princess ships if not THE favorite. Cheers
we just got off and I'd say your take is accurate. Lots of kids on our sailing (but it didn't bother us in any way). Our teens wanted the best seats for production shows, so we'd get there around an hour early--but there were still good seats scattered around after that. The chat feature is still worthless b/c it doesn't make any notification pop up at all. What son and I found SUPER annoying: they decorated the piazza with green tree/ornament type decorations, but they hung it all inside the piazza on the bottom 16" or so of the glass---so this ruins the view of everyone on the 2nd and 3rd level (you can literally only see maybe 20% of the floor because your line of site is blocked by the decorations. I have no clue what they were thinking. They should take it all down ASAP, perhaps hang it on the 6 or 8 vertical pillars, where it's not blocking everyone's view.
@@monkeyb1820yup, same issues we had. The weird thing about the message popups (push notifications) is that I would swear it worked properly the first day or two (showing up in the iOS notifications panel), but then this stopped happening for the rest of the cruise. I think a server or service needs to be rebooted somewhere, lol. There were complaints about the garland in the piazza on our cruise as well - that was not well thought out, for sure.
Very well done video. It’s a shame that Princess is steering away from the full wrap around promenade deck.
Thank you. I agree - a wraparound promenade makes a huge difference.
Just had a thought kind of late in the game and one that I'm always aware of. We booked for being onboard over Christmas and that means toddlers and kids. We learned our lesson years ago or maybe I didn't.
There will definitely be more kids onboard on a holiday sailing. But there are still adults only areas like the Retreat pool.
Back on in 2 weeks. Hopefully all the kinks have been ironed out!
Crossing my fingers for you! Hope you have a great cruise! Report back if you can.
Have you done any cruises on the NCL Pearl?
Hi Robert - I've sailed on the Pearl's sister ship Jade and it was a much better experience. Much smaller and less crowded.
