Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and GoFundMe are all NOT available for South Africans. As we have Amazon (opened their doors here three months ago) PayPal, Apple, WooCommerce, Payhip, Shopify, I really don't understand why these Platforms and their common denominator, the Payment Gateway, Stripe, have decided to completely sideline South Africa. I would love to launch a Kickstarter campaign, but their solution is to sign up for Stripe Atlas and fork out $500 for it so that my business can be incorporated in Delaware. That's not even adding all the future costs of annual taxes, etc, for such an incorporation. Rather counterintuitive to spend so much money (and with the South African Rand Dollar exchange rate, it's a huge amount of money), to run a crowdfunding campaign to fund my business. I honestly don't understand why these crowdfunding platforms are only available to Western countries when we could really use the initiative here in South Africa. Maybe you can advise me.

It's a good overview, but there are lots of things that were left out, like figuring out how to raise money if you don't have it, even if your plan is to do a Kick Starter because Kick Starter isn't really what it once was. If you don't have a video with extremely high production value, you can forget it, and this alone can cost $20,000. If you want to hire a firm like LaunchBoom, well, their fees are also into the thousands before you even get to ad spend which is likely what you're going to need to have to get pre-signups. Ad spend can easily be $20k to $200k. All of that has to be paid upfront. My most important piece of advice is, if you do crowd funding, make sure that there is MORE than enough margin to pay all of the fees, to have the product actually made, and enough money for the next two rounds of production. So, cost of goods, or COGS, is vitally important to know because everything having to do with pricing and profit will be derived from this.
