Wood Turning - Big & Beautiful Yew
In this wood turning project I take a huge piece of English Yew and turn a big and beautiful end grain bowl. This was both heavy and just about at the limitations of my lathe! There were many bark inclusions and some old branch junctions. The final result, in my opinion, is beautiful. The grain, patterns and features are amazing, no matter which angle you view from. This is a gift back to the donor of some Yew logs after they had to have an old tree taken down. I hope they are as pleased with it as I am!
Thanks for watching - Jim

Wood Turning - End grain Yew platter "Harder than rock"
มุมมอง 457ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I turn some English Yew and make an end grain platter. The plan changed when I applied some epoxy resin finishing coat that set with ripples across the surface. So after thinking I would sand it all back and refinish it, I in fact ended up re-turning it and adding some copper pipe bands. Thanks for watching - Jim
Wood Turning - Saturn, The Gas Giant
มุมมอง 1Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I turn some Horse Chestnut into a sphere. I then take some ply wood and form a mould to slowly build up the rings of Saturn. I finally turn away the ply to leave the rings formed from Epoxy resin, coloured with dyes, mica powder and acrylics. Saturn is then displayed on a turned Horse Chestnut base and stands on three acrylic rods. Thanks for watching - best wishes, Jim
Woodworking/woodturning - A beautiful Yew & Chocolate Resin Round Table
มุมมอง 461ปีที่แล้ว
I use some beautiful English Yew and create a round table using Chocolate Resin and turning a pedestal leg and foot. Yew is one of my favourites wood and it always delivers on stunning features and grain with two tone colours and hints of pinky reds. I also love the chocolate mica coloured resin. It seems to compliment the Yew very well. Thanks for watching - Jim
Wood Turning - Horse Chestnut wood dyes and ink
มุมมอง 700ปีที่แล้ว
I turn a piece of Horse Chestnut into a large bowl and colour it with wood dyes and inks. Finished in a clear lacquer and polished. This was a bit of experimentation. The inside of the bowl was oiled with danish oil. the outside left bare. The dye was definitely diluted by the oil which did still colour it but left the grain visible. The bare wood just soaked up the black dye to create a nearly...
Wood Turning - Chestnut Platter with Horse Hair inlay
มุมมอง 285ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I turn a platter from Horse Chestnut and inlay some horse hair. This was a commission piece to create a keepsake after the owner sadly lost two horses. The hair was black and ginger/chestnut and was set around the rim and in a centre disc. The hair was set in clear resin. The wood had a few cracks and a void so I used some blue mica powder and resin to fill these. T...
Wood Turning - The "Snifter" Burr, Resin & Pewter
มุมมอง 349ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I turn a "snifter style" goblet from a Horse Chestnut burr and some resin. I had not started off with this intention! I had been making a burr and resin paper weight but after studying it I thought if I turned it upside down it and hollowed it out, it would make a great goblet cup! I cast some pewter and then turn that down to form the base and stem. All glued toget...
Wood Turning - Beautiful Laburnum and cloisonné style inlay
มุมมอง 342ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I take a chunk of rotting Laburnum. I turn a large platter which I add an Aluminium band to the rim and a centrepiece design in the Cloisonné style. (Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips) The Laburnum had been found laying down and rotting in a nearby hedge-line and covered over in...
Wood Turning - Fungus! I never expected to get anything so beautiful
มุมมอง 14Kปีที่แล้ว
This chunk of wood had been lying outside under a pile of offcuts for over a year. I nearly threw it out but then thought, well - maybe? The wood was very soft and punky in places, no surprise really. But as I turned more and more away I could see some beautiful features and markings appearing. It was quite difficult to finish due to the varying soft and harder parts, but I think the danish oil...
Wood Turning - A decorative Rotten Apple Candle Holder
มุมมอง 186ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project, I turn a, DECORATIVE ONLY, candle holder from a gnarly rotten piece of Applewood. The final result reminds me of a throne! Finished with Danish Oil. Just a reminder, that any candle holder made from wood should have a non flammable barrier between the candle and the wood! Excuse my lighting the candle for the thumbnail photo! Thanks for watching. Wood Turning - Walnut Platter with Pewter inlay
มุมมอง 2.1Kปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I turn a piece of English Walnut and add a pewter inlay on the rim. Still early days with pewter work but it is a really enjoyable process. I had a few separations in the inlay. I don't think it's the wood moving so I need to be quicker pouring to get an even and consistent flow before it cools. Always learn from every project! Thanks for watching. Check out my ETSY...
Wood Turning - Decaying Ash Root - Alcohol Ink & Lacquer
มุมมอง 322ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I take a decaying Ash root and make a decorative bowl finished with alcohol inks and lacquer. This wood was almost too far gone so I was glad to get something from it. \My first go at applying alcohol inks. This was quite fun and they seemed to give a nice effect mixing into the various coats of lacquer. Thanks for watching Check out my ETSY shop. wonderfulwoodnstuf...
Wood turning - The Dragonfly Wood & Resin Art
มุมมอง 390ปีที่แล้ว
In this woodturning project I embed a dead Dragonfly into resin set on a horse chestnut burr/burl. On return from a holiday several years ago, we sadly found a dead dragonfly in our house. I placed it into a plastic box where it slowly dried. I am aware that any tiny amounts of body fluid will cause real problems with the resin and can cause fractures. This Dragonfly was so dry that I hoped it ...
Wood Turning - Apple Crumble Candle Holder - An odd piece but I like it!
มุมมอง 258ปีที่แล้ว
In this wood turning project I take a rotten and holey piece of Applewood and turn a candle holder. I was surprised to see the holes and bark running throughout this piece. Definitely saved this from the firewood pile. An odd piece but i like it! Just a reminder that this is a decorative piece only. Any candle should have a non flammable material between the candle and wood. Thanks for watching...

Hi Jim Thanks for your message. I’m glad to have even more background information about your beautiful piece. I keep my eye out at the charity shop in Wantage ( King something?) when I’m visiting. . I was sorely tempted by the platters in April! I’ll be back next year looking, as my sister lives in Stanford in the Vale and we regularly visit Sainsburys opposite! I look forward to viewing more videos too. Kind regards

I bought this piece from a shop in Wantage. It is now in a prominent position in my living room in Grand Cayman. It brings me a lot of pleasure to look at it. Thank you!

Hello Jim. This is once again a typical example of how failures can sometimes lead to a better result. The silver rings contrast with the wonderful wood, I really like that, old and new, rough and delicate, which complement each other. When carrying out your project, I thought for a long time about how you would work on the back without the front tennon. Yes, the way you did it, it's also possible to work on the back, but the rear Tennon you used is only glued, and given the mass and speed, I wouldn't have had much confidence in it. If it comes loose and the shell comes off, not only is it dangerous, but you would also have a problem re-clamping it so that everything runs smoothly again. But everything went well and the result is sensational. Thank you for showing, take care of yourself and stay healthy. Many greetings from Northern Germany, Schorschi

    • @JimLiddiardEntertainInspire
      @JimLiddiardEntertainInspire ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Schorschi, I value your comments. I too thought long and hard about the method. I was concerned regarding the safety but the surface area I had for gluing gave a very firm fix. I took full caution of this and very carefully achieved what I wanted. Best wishes and thanks for watching👍 Jim

Thanks - Although I do use resin in some pieces, I have rarely used it as a final finish. I wasn’t very pleased at the time but now I’ve re-turned it and finished with the oil and wax I’m very happy with the result. Thanks for watching - Jim

This looks beautiful, but I think it would've been really cool looking if you had done something with resin and the actual mushroom covered part. So, instead of scraping them all off the wood, maybe cast them in resin. I think that also would've looked really awesome. It still looks beautiful, though.

Thanks - much appreciated. Wood is wood so it all depends on the type of wood and how it was dried and environment it’s kept in. Horse Chestnut is fairly good. This sphere does have a small crack on the underside but I don’t think it will be an issue! Thanks for watching👍
