How to remove the Tension Assembly on a Singer 99K Sewing Machine - Late Model
I just hot s 99K nit know nothing about it. Ill be watching you like a hawk for what to do!
I found you thru Bob Fowler’s praise of your Featherweight series. I had just purchased a featherweight from an antique mall and your videos were so beautifully bright, well lit and organized! I take that little machine every week to my quilting group. I love the fact that I know that machine inside and out! I started my antique sewing machine collecting bug during Covid. I had just moved across the country and was watching a few TH-cam videos about vintage machines, decided that I would try to fix one. Found a machine on marketplace and got my husband to help drag it home and into a spare bedroom. I have restored over 15 different machine, refinished sewing cabinets and met so many lovely people along the way. I also love to research my family history and discovered that I have a many times great grandmother who owned a Singer Shop during the years 1871-1880 in Ottawa, Illinois. Of course that meant that I needed to own a machine that would have been sold by her! I love the fact that I have a female relative who was a business owner during the late 1800’s. I have a 1873 New Family Singer machine that I was able to restore just by learning thru TH-cam! Thank you so much for making all your videos. The time and effort you put into all of them is truly monumental! Life takes us so many places and experiences that we could never imagine, I have enjoyed my path. I hope others are enjoying their path!
Do you repair the featherweight cases?
Fabulous job, your explanations are so logical and easy to follow. Can I ask, is the needle bar supposed to be really tight going back into the bushing. I had to use a tiny hammer and lever, using tiny gentle taps to get mine out and it seems to be really rough inside the bushing and VERY tight to get the needle bar back in. I have cleaned the bar and there are no rough spots on it. I would really appreciate your input, thanks so much :)
Very helpful vidio but I am wondering how such a beautiful lady got into this line of work
My goodness, you go into such fabulous clear detail, you are awesome. Thank you for your informative and helpful video's, from which I have learned so much. I just shipped the machine I learned to sew on as a child, (a 66-3 I believe) which has sat in the back of my mums wardrobe since I left over 40 years ago, all the way to Australia from the UK. Ashamed to say, I was ignorant to the maintenance on my baby back then, needless to say, she's in a bit of a state and was totally jammed up. Slowly stripping and cleaning, I have a huge problem with both my needle bar and presser rod. I can't get the doohicky off the bottom of the presser rod, which screws the feet on, so can't get the thread cutter off and the rod out AND the needle bar seems to have something stopping it coming through the bushing. I have been squirting penetrating oil on them for 3 days and jiggling away, but nothing gives. I have photos, but can't add them here... Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks again 🙂
It is identical to the Singer 301 which I had to fix. Yay!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks million...
Happy to share!
I have a Spartan and an early 99. The 99 is a hand crank. The Spartan is beautiful - mint condition. The 99 was well-used by a previous owner but it does work.
Very nice! I have a hand crank 99 as well, the later model. Such a sweet sound it makes!
You chose a gorgeous color! My 301 has the LBOW color combination and is in excellent condition.
Sounds like you have a lovely 301!
Thank you again. Very valuable tutorials Jenn.
You are so welcome! Hope you are doing well!
Great information Jen! Love the way you teach , so promise and very clear. Easy to follow you and please know we who watch appreciate all the effort is a true blessing !!
Thanks so much! I enjoy any time I get to get on camera and film these videos for you!
Thank you for all of the help in your video!
Happy to help! Thank you for following along!
Wonderful video. I proudly use my grandmother’s 1937 featherweight. I still have all the original paperwork including coupons for singer sewing lessons.
How wonderful, they are the perfect machines for that! So sweet that you have your grandmother‘s machine!!
Hi yes useing the Q clips is a good idea but I use the eye make up pads they in a circle plastic bag with 50 or more they cool to clean my camera lens. Use these pads will allow to give a nicer rub over the dull area. Also removing the old oil and greasy is lighter fluid with cheap tooth brushes grate for removing that old build up of oil. I used this on my singer 201K I got at a recycle area it freed it up. Hi from Ireland
Hi! Yes, I use those pads too sometimes, they are great. Never tried lighter fluid, does it damage the finish at all?
Hi l. Want to know
I’m in a situation with a 66 model where I have to replace the wire on the light. Do you happen to have a video covering that on how to disassemble the light and rewire it to the motor?
Hi! I don’t have it yet but Bob Fowler probably does! Depending on the style of your light it can be pretty tricky. I’d search his channel and see if you can find one that matches the style you have. The late models are easier than the earlier models. I won’t be rewiring the late model 99 light because the one I used in this series didn’t need it. I will have to do something for my early model 99 light and let’s just say, it will not be my favorite thing to do!
Jen, I cannot get that needle bar screw out 😢 like your one, it has some damage to it already (not quite as much as the one in your video but still). I’m wondering about blasting it with keyboard cleaning aerosol (which is very cold) or a hairdryer? What do you think? In the meantime it’s resting nose up with lubricant oil
EDIT spoke too soon! She came out for me. Patience truly is a virtue 😂
So glad you got it out! Sometimes you just have to walk away and clean something. I get the vacuum out when I get shut down by a stuck screw. Or bake something. 😊 But…I would have tried heat before cold compressed air for future reference.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
cool tool! to follow up on your safety precaution; you should really be using a vise or some method to secure such a tiny work piece (other than your fingers) PanaVise makes a nice small vise that clamps or suction cups to a table and comes with optional Teflon jaws. A drill press vise with leather on the jaws would be another good option. its SO nice to have something else hold the thing securely for you and your fingies will thank you. love your videos
I checked them out, pretty cool! I will add that to my “wish list” 😊
Thank you so much for your videos. I'm learning so much. I'm waiting for AeroKroil to arrive. My screws are super stuck on. You've inspired me to take apart the motor too. It's filthy and full of carbon bits.
You are so welcome! I wish you the best and please comment again if you have questions! The Kroil is the best I have found so far here in the states and it doesn’t damage the finish. It is a little pricey but I am still using the first can I ever purchased and I have worked on A LOT of machines!
@@SewingMachineRehab Kroil arrived and wow it really works! Unfortunately, my wheel still won't make a complete turn. If you have any ideas on what it could be, I'd love to know. Thank you again for your time! :)
Holy moly, I figured it out. I was so simple. The clip thing on the presser foot was stuck just a few millimeters too low. I must have moved it when I was putting on the bottonholer attachment. It is so filthy from years of oil. Now I can have some fun cleaning the machine. I'll be watching more of your fantastic videos!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank goodness for this video!😊
Glad you liked it!!
compressed air has so many applications relevant to sewing machine restoration.
It sure does! I am just careful with some models because you can low lint into places you don’t want it to go. Not all of them but especially the newer models…
1:21 Well, put all your small parts into your sieve and blow dry them all at once but not too close. They won't fly all over and it will be quicker.
Yes, I guess that would keep them put. Terrified of having to find a tiny screw!
@@SewingMachineRehab Or, you can spread them on a cloth , cover with the sieve and blow dry them through the sieve . Works too.
What caused these rouges on the commutation? Thanks, Dave
Hi! Probably thread and needle strikes. Hard to imagine thread could do that but if a machine isn’t maintained properly over the years then it is possible. Almost every Featherweight I work on has those marks…makes you wonder if the hook assembly design could have used some tweaking…
Any advice on getting my stitches to be straight, they are slanted.
Hi! I would check two things. First make sure that the feed dogs are not crooked in the needle plate. If they are slightly crooked, you will get crooked stitches. Then I would make sure that the needle bar is properly positioned. The line on the needle bar should be centered on the line on the needle bar clamp. If it isn’t then the eye of the needle is going to be twisted as well when it goes in the fabric and you will get slanted stitches. Either of those could be the problem, I hope that helps!
@SewingMachineRehab Thank you for the advice. I checked and the feed dogs look straight, and the needle bar is centered as per the line on the needle bar clamp. I've also checked presser bar foot height and alinement with the Featherweight Shop tool/guage. Stitches are still at a slant.
Sorry forgot to ask - do you know Andy Tube? I haven't seen him post in a while, just hoping he's doing ok?
Hi! Yes! Andy was a big contributor to my passion for restoring these machines. He commented on one of my videos recently. I can’t say more than that but I am wishing him well also, what a legend he is in the vintage sewing machine community!
I absoutely loved and APPRECIATED your 99K late model playlist when I was restoring my 99K. It was so helpful and I just immediately meshed with your teaching style - just as you intended. I was able to restore the machine to about 90% but ran into mechancial issues I just couldn't troubleshoot on my own. I need to bring it in to get it to actually sew:) But your videos were amazing and I loved the process of cleaning and restoring - and I couldn't have done it without your wonderful and extensive expertise and videos. Thank you so so much!!
You are so welcome! Please email me at jen@sewingmachinerehab.com and describe your issue, I may be able to help! The late 99k series is still in production so maybe some of the future videos will be able to help as well. So nice to hear that you have enjoyed the videos, thank you!
If it’s stuck that means someone upset their husband and he tightened it too much to force his wife to talk to him and ask for help to get it working. Or so I hear.
Oh my. Hopefully not! Haha!
Yo tengo una de 2 colores y tiene todas las piesas para puntadas y zig zag pero no se como funcionan .😢😢
I think the mysterious washer was added later. In the spot where the washer was located on your machine, that spot on my machine had some metal shavings that I needed to clean out with a brush. There was damage around the hole where the screw goes in. Thank you for the videos, they are top notch!
You are welcome! And I agree with you, it was changed. The metal shavings can be found in a lot of the holes that don’t go straight through. Good to clean them out before you put the screws back in!
An awesome video for sure. Looking forward to more of the same 👍
Thanks! Working on them!
What would you do if the light came on but the wheel and needle didn’t move when pressing the button?
Hi! The first thing I would do is change out the foot controller to an electronic one. Sometimes the foot controller is the problem. The next thing I would do is make sure that the motor brushes are making contact with the commutator. Even if just one of the two isn’t making contact the motor won’t spin. Check those two things out and let me know how it goes!
😅 I’m going through and get to the reverse screw part and I have 2 reverse screws and realize I need to wait for the late model videos.
Hi! There are some models of 99’s that have more than one reverse screw. I am not sure my late 99 has both (can’t remember right now) Hopefully the future videos help you get unstuck, working on them now!
@@SewingMachineRehab I am looking forward to them, I realized I also have an early model in rougher shape but I dare not take it apart till I get the other one back together 😁
Would this work on the bobbin case itself?
Hi! Yes! Just don’t use it on the shiny chrome parts. Only the parts that look like they are brushed metal. Be careful and wear gloves when you use this tool or you will get splinters!
Hello, I have a bobbin case that has rust on the outside rim as well as maybe grime & dinginess. Do I take it apart & soak it in the krud cutter solution to get it cleaned up? Or what would you suggest to remove that from the case. It’s the bobbin case itself that you release with the lever & take out of the machine. (All of the bobbing case cleaning videos I’ve found so far are removing the parts that the case itself goes into on the machine & that’s not what I’m looking for. 😊) thank you for your help.
Hi! Krudcutter will get the grime off but won’t do much for the rust. If your bobbin case is rusty then disassembly of the case is probably a good idea. What model are you working on? I’m not sure exactly what you mean with your question about what to remove and disassemble, feel free to send me some pics to jen@sewingmachinerehab.com if you want, maybe I could help you further.
Thank you, I am about to put my first 99 back together.❤️
Hi! You are welcome! Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
If I think you did an okay job? I think you did a terrific job!! I wish I could give you triple-thumbs up for such lovely, clear detailed videos. And this one was no exception. Thank you Jen. :-)
Thanks Megan!
Thank you! I got my 66 (which is similar) into timing! It is a complicated process with lots of moving parts! Looking forward to the bobbin parts.

@@SewingMachineRehab the video you suggested didn't have instructions on how to remove the presser bar lifter, the tapered pin holding it. I'm having a hard time getting it out. Not sure what to do.
Jen, Your videos are so helpful to so many people. My sewing machine restoration journey started during the Lockdown of 2020. My Babylock machine had died on me and there were no new parts or machines to be found anywhere. Our family actually runs a small business, and I have a store front available, that I'd planned as an outlet for my new hobby. But there was no interest in my local community. I'm actually the youngest in my sewing circles, and all of my friends are downsizing. Hubby has a degree in electronics and handles all of my rewiring requests. And some folks do seem interested if I tell them that my Hubby's the one doing the restorations. But no one's buying anything. I've actually started dropping machines off at our local charity shops when they're finished. At least they are all sparkling clean now and running smoothly. At least now they have a chance, rather than gathering dust in the storage room at our shop. Embrace your progress problems! You're doing God's work & helping so many people! *and you're totally right, repair and restore playlists are awesome!!!
Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words! It is so much fun to restore these machines, I would fix them whether I could sell them or not. How wonderful that your hubby can help with the electrical, you are a team! It takes time to find a way to sell the machines but donating them in safe and working condition is a very noble cause as well. I wish you all the best with your future endeavors, if it makes you happy I hope you are able to continue doing it. I will continue on my path as well, I have no intention of stopping. Blessings to you and your hubby!
