Do you have good character connection? It is well worth the extra effort to develop this skill.
One of my main characters is an alien 100-foot-tall worm with tentacles. But he has problems, just like everyone else. I let the reader know those problems.
I LOVE it!! Make sure you show those problems in vivid ways!! It sounds like an interesting story I would want to read!
I think referencing "escapism" threatens to obfuscate the issue. Because it implies a frivolous self-indulgent exercise, in which there would be no motive or purpose to connecting with anyone, except maybe after the fact, as a shared appreciation.
Obfuscate - interesting word. Honestly, I had to look that one up. Thanks for sharing.
I started with the introduction of a villain, who looks down at everyone. He feels slighted by his boss and is happy that he's needed again. He also has a negative view on his wife and no confidence in his son. We can see his disgust when he enters a filthy tavern to hire some cheap crooks to do the dirty work (kidnapping a group of environmentalists), while he plans to take advantage of everyone and make a big profit for himself.
While I hope this creates a connection, the reader isn't supposed to fall in love with him. Not now and not later, as he isn't showing any redeeming qualities later on. But I hope it creates curiosity.
Curiosity is a good thing. Not all characters are the lovable kind. Some have other purposes.
