Doctor Who not being renewed for Season 3? It's much ado about nothing!

It's kinda funny when you see TH-camrs trying to get clicks by declaring shocking things like Doctor Who won't be renewed for Season 3. Their reference for that? Can't agree more about Ireland. As an Irish fan, I cant really believe it hasn't happened in the show proper at some stage. The Book of Kells McGann audio is the closest it got. At least Sydney appeared onscreen in The Pilot via cgi, yet no Ireland, surprising. Lady Jane Grey was done quite well in the sja's, still good idea though for the main show

    Nice round up, chaps. Ive mixed feelings about Season 12. Back in the day I had been hit badly by Katy leaving then Jon, and their departures left a huge gloomy shadow over what came next. On top of that, it wasn’t much fun in our household with my mother walking out on me and my father and disappearing. It was nigh on impossible to not let events like that colour my overall feelings towards the new season. These days - I’ve warmed to it more, although it will always be my least favourite Tom season. I started a Tom marathon a while ago - an episode a day starting from Robot and currently up to Meglos episode 2 - and even this time round I was glad to get onto season 13. However, objectively I do appreciate that Ark and Genesis are very well made Who. I was hoping that Revenge might grab me back in 75 but the Cybermen were not the same as the ones that terrified me in Wheel and The Invasion, so that one was a bit of a damp squib too. Hopefully one day you two will have a chat about Season 19. C’mon Rob. Work your Davo magic 😂

    One of the reasons who did so well up to Jodi was, for the most part, stories that held together internally. Where the Dr worked things out & then had to make some effort to put put their ideas into action. Where the plot, the story came first and any 'morals' came second. Not sht that we're getting now. Less money involved would just make things even worse.

    I think the irony is that even with the extra money these episodes still felt very locked into one to three locations for the most part - the one exception I can think of is 73 yards and that was easily the best episode for me. My point I guess is are they really doing much more that ghost or monster of the weeks stories anyway? Feel a little let down my this series but there’s some good in it too.

    One of my favourite series in recent years is the dark comedy anthology Inside No 9. Every episode takes place in a different location, with the only link being the number 9. They deliberately have small casts, and some episodes take place in a single room, but they've had supernatural stories and a time travel episode alongside more mainstream stories. Despite its low budget and being shown on BBC 2 on a Wednesday night, it has won awards and got around 2 million viewers, which is about the same as the overnight figures for this series. I also enjoy the Ghost Story for Christmas episodes, which are also pretty low budget. So why not take a leaf out of their book and decide to concentrate on stories that are atmospheric and suspenseful?

    • @theDWshow
      @theDWshow หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's certainly where at least some episodes would go, if they return to making the series on 'BBC money', per RTDs comments in March. And I think the show would actually be better for it. It runs counter to this dream of Doctor Who being some sort of Marvel-esque, Avengers-esque, orgy of CGI... but I find older fans hate that vibe and younger types aren't fussed.

    The late, great Jon Pertwee once said that part of the appeal of Doctor Who, at least in the classic era, was precisely the slightly 'amateurish' elements that were forced on the show by the limited budgets, like a moment when you could briefly glimpse through the gauze beneath a Dalek's domed head and see the profile of the actor's head inside, or even the black plimsole shoes of the Dalek operator showing for an instant as it 'glided' across a floor. All the CGI 'bells and whistles' that big budget productions deliver don't really make up for unimaginative stories, and Doctor Who has been blessed with highly imaginative writers (excepting a few real turkeys) right from the start in 1963. Long may that continue. Good, sensible, video - well said.

    • @theDWshow
      @theDWshow หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that having access to CGI tends to push stories in directions that are... I won't go as far to say 'lazy' but certainly easier than telling good stories. When you can roll on 10,000 Daleks and make a spectacle, you don't have to think as hard about the story as when you only have three daleks and a cardboard set. I get what you (and Jon!) mean.

    • @briancurtis6022
      @briancurtis6022 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theDWshow I agree. The tendency to focus on visuals and effects is kind of lazy, the easy way out. It's a problem you can solve by throwing more money at it to buy bigger and faster computers; it's much harder to create good stories. You can see the same tendency in American businesses, which love to hire consultants and buy new project-management software as a substitute for actually improving their methods, workplace, or service.

      Was huge in NZ as well. It is not every day that a tv show makes top news in NZ. Doctor Who is a cult classic. You can blame the BBC for not cultivating the show since it came back fully. Letting Disney get involved is the worst mistake the show has ever made, and a sign that the BBC failed it. That is not the main reason why the ratings have tanked elsewhere in the world. The British Commonwealth will not pay Disney to watch it; they managed to piss off the fans from those countries. I know that this season is the first I have not watched since Jodie finished, because of Disney's involvement in my access.

      I totally agree. The series doesn't need huge budgets if the scripts and acting are good. You can have a great episode with three characters trapped in a room if it's well written and acted, but you can still have some bigger stories if you just allocate the money accordingly. So you could have more episodes (maybe 12 and a special) but have a couple of bottle episodes with small casts (claustrophobic ghost stories as you say) and still have a bigger story with a world ending threat.

    I am indeed listening from Dublin, such a surreal experience to have my idea discussed. Highlight of my weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. As youse both said, plenty of snaps. I took Robs view of the best 5 stories that happen to be season openers. Saw none live due to age, so never had that impact as openers for me sadly. My top 5 classic openers are: 1. Horror of Fang Rock 2. Remembrance of the daleks 3. Terror of the Autons 4. The Time Warrior 5. Tomb of the cybermen As you said, would maybe have put Zygons in there but really feels like the climax of series 12. Lett's definitely opened well and with a bang. Honourable mentions for me would be of course, Spearhead (prefer Autons the following year), planet of giants, Attack of the cybermen, An unearthly child. It just occurred to me that there's only 1 missing opener in the Smugglers which is a shame as I enjoy the recon. Discovered this channel through the excellent review of the great novel 'Shadow of weng chiang', one of my favourites. Many thanks for a great listen!

    I kind of did wonder if Dot and Bubble should have made the racism more obvious, at least at the end, but i think the way they did it is the point. The fact is racism sometimes isn't always noticeable. There's things that i might brush off without realising it's racist. But there's also another reason for me. I love when political messages aren't thrown at you. A lot of the messages in Chibbnals era felt like that, like they where tacked on, with Orphan 55 even having the doctor basically turn to camera and lecture the audience at the end. It reminds me of one of my favourite zombie films, the original 1978 Dawn of the dead. The first time I watched it I was young and the whole consumerism social commentary angle was lost on me, but I still loved it as a zombie film. I feel dot and bubble is the same, if you don't see the message it's not that your racist but it doesn't also make the episode not work. The ending I just thought it was because they didn't want saved by someone older/poorer etc. but it hits even harder now knowing the real reason

    • @theDWshow
      @theDWshow หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of what you're saying there, I recognise as things we've said over the years. Jodie half-turning to camera to deliver a lecture is something I picked up on years ago in our hot takes of her era. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. And the fact is racism sometimes isn't always noticeable is something Dave hammers in this very episode as the basis of how RTD *could* have framed his comments around this episode in a much more interesting way, but chose not to. Some missed opportunities.

    The existential surprise I felt when my name got read out! 👍 The season is one where I can't imagine anyone hating an episode in isolation, but like you said it's the most "discardable" it's been in a while. As a package it was all over the place. Individually, almost any episode is sort of a "this is doctor who" "okay then..." sort of response. When Boom and Rogue are my favourites and I still have major problems with half of them, and you have 8 eps 2 of which are extremely silly first impressions, 2 of which hardly feature the doctor, 2 of which are the finale, and 2 of which I find personally enjoyable but are splintered apart ever 3 episodes... its a bit of a mess. 73 Yards and Dot And Bubble are interesting, but what am I meant to make of them after the whiplash between 2 hokey, 1 war story, then 2 experimental What Ifs. I've tried reordering them and I think the problem is a lack of cohesive whole, you always get back down to the Finale where the characters have no depth and the mystery has no depth and the worldbuilding wants to ride on 'a wizard did it'. That empty finale makes an otherwise average hollow season feel far worse.

    After last weeks episode, and the amazing reveal (which I did not see coming) I can't help but feel disappointed. This feels like a similar situation with the Series 3 finale where all the stops were pulled only for a big reset to happen with next to no consequences. Also the reveal of Ruby's mother was anticlimactic. I don't see any other way of looking at it. For the whole series (and a Christmas special) to be building up to this is just disappointing. I am looking forward to whatever Mrs Flood is revealed to be in the future (hoping for another Missy or a Rani reveal).

    The season is quite bad, if I have to rate it I’d give it a 4/10. The finale was very bad imo. BTW why was the time window working for so long, it was meant to be broken after last episode. All we got in the last scene was “it’s starting to remember” that doesn’t work if the mother is a random teen. It made no sense!!!

    I think you guys have been very kind Okay as a piece of fluff this was fun....but COME ON ! The whole Season was building up to THIS? A SPOON saves the Universe? Intelligent Rope WTF! You can now summon the TARDIS with a whistle like a dog! They killed off major characters with Magic Dust that you KNEW were coming back. So there was ZERO suspense, clearly RTD was going to hit the RESET button AGAIN. The revelation of Ruby's Mum was so anticlimactic. Just a random Mum dropping off a newborn at a church RTD just wrote a big budget Soap Opera. To top it all off Mrs Flood is Mary Poppins. To quote my Mum when I was a naughty child " I'm not angry, just very disappointed".

    • @theDWshow
      @theDWshow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair, we covered stuff like the magic dust, knowing everyone would return, a lack of suspense around that. And other stuff you mention. I - Rob - even used the name Mary Poppins to describe Mrs Flood at the end. So you're sort of saying this stuff to us like it's new information - yet we said it ourselves in the episode?

      Oh I thought you were totally fair and I agree( although my thoughts were my own and not deliberately mirroring yours I didn't catch your Poppins reference so clearly I wasn't the only one to notice ). Saying you were kind was a compliment. As a viewer of 61 years I cannot forgive this lazily written episode that the whole season was building up to. PS Brilliant spotting of Rose's non involvement in the confrontation with Sutekh. I'm sure she was meant to be looking for some kind of solution or something but it just looked like she was a disinterested teenager playing games on her iPad

      I feel this needed more Sutekh. While the reveal was good last week, one of the problems with the way RTD leaves most till the finale is he doesn't have a lot of time left. I get what they where doing with Ruby's mother, showing how people see mysteries in things that are just normal but it just doesn't add up with the snow etc. I think if it wasn't for the snow I could have bought it. People are also saying that Mrs flood is Clara as when she comes back she says clever boy but I don't see it myself

    Hello lads from a late evening in a very very very hot USA... Enjoyed listening to your show. Wish I had enjoyed the episode but I disliked most of the writing. The VFX, and performances were proper highlights, however I was very distracted by how flimsy the plot worked together. I was definitely left with many questions that I don't expect to get answers to, and am feeling less enthusiastic about the next season. I'll spare you a list of specifics and just write that I am left in the ballpark of being as disappointed with the show as I was during the Chibnall era.

      It doesn't appear in the schedule, as far out as October. I note other, newer, releases - like the Celestial Toymaker - are already scheduled (August for that one), so I'd suggest there's a strong possibility they just aren't bothering with that one. I would recommend buying the Blu-ray from the UK (same regional coding as Australia, no worries with that one).

Agree 100% about Bridgeton and cosplay references. Just a little to meh. I wonder what the crossover audience is for Doctor Who and Bridgeton, assuming it’s mostly the Ladies. I feel this was the first time we saw the 15th Doctor. Also Tegan called the first doctor “Doc” and he got tetchy at her in The Five Doctors. Also second doctor was I think at the end of the holographic carousel.

    I am a gay man, and i am sorry, the elephant in the room is the Doctor falling in love with a man. The Doctor is NOT a gay character. This was crowbarred in for political purposes only. There is no artistic merit in this whatsoever. Just because a non-canon novel wrote he kissed a man, i just want to point out that Captain Jack in canon kissed him, but it was unser duress and not reciprocal. The gold standard is, if you can't see Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, et al, just deciding to turn gay all of a sudden (which is frankly insulting to gays, because it isn't something you just put on like a new coat), then it is against character.

    It was a Doctor Who story loaded with horny inuendo I don't think it needed it. I enjoyed it, I prefer the 60 minute or 25-minute episode format though. I don't like the Doctor's lack of humility and awkward need to move on - its not landing for me as the Doctor. The Doctor went and saved Captain Jack after his noble sacrifice, just moves on now. The Doctor is still allowing others to make the tough decisions and giving him cop-outs

    Flirty Doctor just doesn't work for me. I prefer it when they are awkward and asexual. The Doctor is best ( for me) when they are ambiguous and open to being anything to anybody. Gay or straight shouldn't come into it. If you wanted to you could interpret Doctors 2 -7 as Gay or Straight it didn't matter they were whoever you wanted them to be for you. Children ( and adults) could identify with them as they saw fit. ps I didn't include The First Doctor as he was clearly written as "Grandfather" figure and Doctors Number 8 onwards are less ambiguous depending on the writers

I only ordered one piece from BCS, the Goldfinger James Bond, which was/is a very well-made piece with great and numerous accessories and still looks awesome upwards of half a decade later. Yes, some great licenses like Bond and Doctor Who, however, some bizarre licenses, too. Like 'Only Fools and Horses' and 'Dads Army'. Warmly remembered by people "of a certain age", but not begging for licensed merchandise. Even Peaky Blinders was a pretty niche license to chase, in a lot of ways. So between some of the bizarre license choices (all of which would cost money), and the factory delays, it feels like they kept soliciting new items to keep money rolling in, but it was all going to fall in a heap eventually. And it did.
