Skip Row Follow-up_June 2024
Back on April 15, we chatted with Pat Kane about his skip row planting. Pat planted two rows of winter rye (7.5 inch spacing) and left a 15-inch gap, where he planted his corn.
💧🌽Last week, we checked on the field to see its progress. This approach has been very effective. The rye worked as a water pump, pulling moisture out of the system. Since Pat was able to plant his corn early, he was able to plant into the gaps. However, he could have planted directly into the rye if the soil needed to dry out more. Having options is key to managing cover crops, especially when faced with extreme weather conditions.
☀️🌽Additionally, we looked at light penetration and the important role it plays in both corn emergence and selecting interseeded cover crops. Skip row planting provides farms the option to plant into the gaps, which increases the amount of light reaching the corn seedling.
☀️🌱As we saw last week, the corn canopy is already starting to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the soil’s surface. When interseeding cover crops, this is important information because not all species can tolerate this much shade. We’ve seen success with clovers and annual rye grass.

Last week we checked in with Pat Kane and his skip row planting. Pat planted two rows of winter rye (7.5 inch spacing) and then left a 15-inch gap, which is where he will plant his corn. This system maintains the benefits of having cover on the landscape pulling up moisture and keeping nutrients on the field where they're need. It also increases seed to soil contact by not planting the corn rig...
Benefits of Soil Structure
มุมมอง 50หลายเดือนก่อน
In the last two weeks, the northeast corner of Brown County has received nearly 3-inches of rain, and this was on top of an already very wet spring. We decided to check out a conservation field run by Gilson Farms to see how their practices are handling the wet conditions. Last fall, Nathan and Mike Gilson planted nearly a 1,000 acres of cover crops. They went with a combination of winter rye a...
10 Year Celebration
มุมมอง 4108 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Fox Demo Farms project! A decade ago, with funding support from the GLRI (Great Lakes Restoration Initiative), the NRCS and Brown County entered into a partnership with local farms in the Lower Fox watershed. The goal of the program was to learn how conservation practices could fit into a farming system in northeast Wisconsin and share those le...
Infiltration Testing
มุมมอง 2078 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the major benefits to using soil health practices is increased infiltration. We've talked about how cover crops act as water pumps in the spring, soaking up the snowmelt and spring rains and storing the water in the soil profile. Check out this infiltration test to see a side-by-side comparison of a field managed with conventional practices and a field managed with cover crops and no-til...
Addressing Compaction
มุมมอง 2179 หลายเดือนก่อน
Last spring, this field had a manure application followed by a high-speed disc to fix tracking issues due to the application. The combination of moisture from the manure, tillage from the disc, and the subsequent hot and dry conditions resulted in some compaction. We were out this week to learn how this farm is addressing the compaction and steps they're taking to build back their soil health. ...
Tailgate Conservation_Benefits of Barley
มุมมอง 2259 หลายเดือนก่อน
The next topic discussed during our Tailgate Conservation series - benefits of barley as a cover crop. The field we toured had been in winter wheat. The farm followed their manure application by planting barley. Barley’s root structure makes it an excellent option for building soil health, as well as an effective tool to break up compacted soils. Moving forward, the farm has two options, take t...

Plants that deposit nitrogen via nodules on their roots. Clover, peas, beans, etc. they fall into the category of “legumes” because of that attribute they have!

I am doing 3 no till pumpkins this year. LOL I just use some cinder blocks to create 3 small pumpkin beds by dumping some half composting tree leaves into them. Then top dress with some cured quail manure every couple of weeks. They are growing ok right now. Hopefully, I will get some 10 to 20 lb pumpkins by fall.
