Fabricating Driver Side Rear Wheel Arch Patch Panel Part 1 - 65 Thunderbird Convertible Ep #70
Hi how many bottles did it take ?
It took about half the bottle to do the top, so one bottle is good for two applications on a 65 Thunderbird.
@ Thanks going to try on my car
In the past when my swivel/U-joints get sloppy as a crack whore, I welded a ¼"∅, another i found was .354"∅ (9mm), and a ½"∅ ball bearing each to a 6mm, 8mm, and 12mm (respectively) socket head cap screw (S.H.C.S.) then use them for a variety of things like getting it on center to each pin on the swivel, give'r a semi-mean rap with a B.F.H. tightens em oop reeeal nicely. That said, your electrical tape IS INDEED a faster method to achieve your means to an end. You'll use the Ball Bearing Bolt more than you'd think, I'll wager.
Excellent diagnosis... 79 Bronco throwing a fit with the tailgate window. I'm ready to troubleshoot thanks to this very concise video. Thanks a million

I’m working on a 2012 dodge journey that wants to stall/stalls when coming to a stop. The engine will shudder and rpms will drop before stalling and it happens the most after coming off the freeway
That sounds like a different issue than in this video, this issue completely kills the engine instantly.
I used to live in Minnesota and that reminds me why I've been in Florida for many years. Lol. You are so right about the snap ring players. I finally got me a good set and what a difference. Thanks Alvin
Good move Matt, let's hope you never have to use a block heater again!
Hello Alvin. Very nice repair. Changing the "O" ring looks like the way to go. George B
Thank you George, I was shocked to see what Ford is asking for these block heater units...just shocking! I'm sure there are aftermarket ones available, but a new o-ring was enough for this repair. 😊

The first thing i would do is remove the colunm shifter and do a cosole shift like it should have been.
Can u fix mine lol
Hey so I’m installing new engine into my 65 bird and I have everything lined up but I cannot get the bell housing to mate to engine! Is it possible for transmission to slide back ? The engine is in the motor mounts and everything is lined up!
Make sure the torque converter bolts and drain plug are lined up with their correct places in the flex plate...also make sure the torque is fully seated in the transmission pump. Don't force it together, make sure the torque is where it needs to be, or you will break something.
@ okay I will have to take another crack at it tomorrow.. everything seems to line up and ttorque is where I think it needs to be but there’s a half inch gap between bellhousing and engine and the studs from converter aren’t threw the flex plate
@@Connorstbirdyeah, the torque converter drain plugs need to come thru the larger hole to the right of the stud hole...if you can't see the end of the drain plug, then you are not aligned with the right set of holes.
cool video! hope to see more of your 65 tbird hardtop videos! I have a 66 bird with the factory cruise control, can you explain how the speedometer system works with cruise? I believe it has two separate cables? I don't know how to open it up and re lube, bc I don't think the speedometer works at all. Thank you Alvin! 👨🔧👨🔧🧑🔧 🔧
I did a video on the 1965 Thunderbird cruise control system, take a look at that video, however, Ford changed the cruise setup for the 66 model, so yours will be different. The speedo cable and speedometer head will be the same in principle.
Hi, I need to replace the anti-rattle shield that sits on top of the brake caliper (I have a knocking noise that I’m pretty sure is coming from loose brake pads). In your video, you say the two bolts that hold the shield down will often break off. I’m a little apprehensive after hearing you say that, but I thought I’d soak the bolts in WD 40 penetrating oil before starting. Anything else I can do to ensure success? Appreciate any help. John
Hi John, Hit them with some heat too, and only break them free at first, less than a quarter of a turn, and then back in again. Keep doing that, in and out but a little further each time, just be patient, and you should be okay.
Thank's Alvin for the info need to do the same to my 66 T/bird
You're welcome, thank you for watching. 👍
My dad bought a '69 four door Landau on which the driver window likewise refused to work - after he got through all the factory sealer and broke the motor down, he found the brushes ok but the brush springs were shot - he replaced them with Bic fountain pen springs that fit perfectly and made the motor work.
A great fix, and Nice pens are or were readily available. 👍
Could you drill a hole in the base of the squirrel cage to get to those two bolts behind to pull the motor out? Then pull the cage off and pull out the motor from the other side?
I'm sure you can, however, with most short cuts, there is a price to pay. In this case, the squirrel cage will most likely be out of balance, and vibrate at high speed.
@@J_R_Shop Hmmm good point. I have to do this as the motor is screeching bad. Not looking forward to the process.
Great job. You got more guts than me. I would never have tried to make my own top. I'm going to be doing a 72 beetle next and it's a convertible so I will be going through this soon.
You'll do just fine on the beetle, and it makes a world of difference in the look of the car with a new top.
I have a 78 Bronco and those tailgate are a pain. Great job!
Thank you, and yes they are a pain!
Well done. I have and still do own a convertable. I hope I never have to replace the top. You certainly are a man of many talents....Walt
Thank you Walt! From what I know about the T-Bird tops compared to the VW Cabriolet...the Cabriolet is a walk in the park...the T-Bird isn't as easy. 🥺
Thanks very helpful
Thank you for watching my video!
Great set of restoration videos and very timely as I just purchased a '65 landau that requires a little bit of work, thanks so much for taking the time to make these, they are very helpful as well as motivational. Brian, Hamilton, Ont.
Congratulations on your T-Bird purchase! I need to get off my lazy butt, and get back working on the convertible! Lol
I was wondering how far along you currently are on the convertible. I have a few areas of concern on my new purchase but these videos certainly show me how to fix them up. Wondering if you have done any videos on repair the diagonal channel that runs by the front shocks. Seems to be a common problem area. Thanks again, Brian
@@brianhughes4560 I haven't gotten to them yet, I will be doing them at the same time as the front apron sections...but they look fairly simple to make, and install, as long as the fenders are removed.
@@J_R_Shop Looking forward to seeing you complete these front channels as I'm sure I'll need to do it as well, please keep those videos coming, learning so much and understanding how these cars are put together, great work, Brian.
@@brianhughes4560 I've been trying to get caught up with my (too many) projects...I really looking forward to getting back to the T-Bird!
Good find there, Alvin. Comms network issues can be very puzzling at first and take time to sort out so this information should help out alot ! The wiggle, tap test on the connector will help identify the issue before buying one and get someone going again till a new cconnector is installed. One good thing about these types of “ connectors” is it allows us to disconnect comms to an individual module when trying to to diagnose a fault. A shorted or defective module can bring down the entire network.
Yes, it was a big relief to actually find something that would cause this to happen, as you know, there's nothing worse than the problem going away without finding the cause! I am going to re-solder the pins, and keep it as a spare.
Great video Alvin! I own a '66 Thunderbird and always thought the shop manual made the choke adjustment procedures sound a little confusing. Your video makes it far more clear! As @classics289 already stated, the 1965 and older Autolite 4100 carburetors used on Thunderbird's had 1.12 venturis. In 1966 Ford changed the venturi size to 1.08 (I believe to reduce emissions). Your carburetor likely came from a 1966 full size Ford or Mercury. The part number stamped into the left front foot as well as the aluminum ID tag on top of the carburetor will tell you - probably a C6AF. The 1965 Thunderbird carburetor would have been a C5SF-A. The automatic choke assemblies were the same in '65/'66. '66 was the final year for the 4100.
i have a question for ya. i just purchased a 1965 thunderbird...and...i was wondering where to use the bumper jack on it....does it actually go under the bumper? and if it does...where does it go....and if I use a floor jack where do I place it to remove my left front tire.....thank you ahead of time.
Hi John, To use the bumper jack, you attach the big J hook looking piece to the jack, and that hooks under the bump. But honestly, a floor jack is much better, behind the front wheel well, there is a flat surface, and ahead of the rear wheel, there is also a flat surface...those are the lift points for a hoist or floor jack. These are the bottom plate for the torque boxes, and are the strongest point for lifting. I also like to use a shirt piece of 2x4 with the floor jack, it prevents denting the lifting areas...just my preference.
So trying to back up your driveway it would slip and the rpms would go up, but you wouldn't move? Like a clutch slipping?
That's correct, I adjusted the reverse band, and it's been good ever since. If you are planning to do this, remember it's inch pounds, not foot pound...and don't unthread the adjustment bolt when loosening the lock nut, make sure you hold the bolt from turning. The last thing you want is to have the band pop out of place.
I used regular Kleen Strip paint remover on some chrome wheels someone painted black. After 3 coats it didn't work hardly at all. Then I tried oven cleaner and that took off almost all of the paint on the first try. The aircraft stripper is still the best but you have to step up to afford it.
This video was very helpful and you explained things beautifully. Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi Jamie son you what you right l trymy self and works thakns a lot your are the best bro 👀
Thank you for watching, and I'm happy it was helpful.
Is the C6 still up for sale?
Hi Jeff, I haven't planned to sell it, it needs work.
I wonder how many times people have had to take their vehicles in for repairs because of this. 44 500 kms and it failed , ouch! thx Alvin
When my wife was researching this issue, there were people saying that they sent in the thousands at dealers, and came away with the same issues. Yes, this jeep is a low mileage vehicle...a little worried about the next few years. ☹️
Hello Alvin. That was a great fix. As an electronic service tech, I used to find a lot of ring cracks. Usually from vibration. Nice going! George B
Hi George, I bet you ran into some real head scratchers over the years! 🤔
Outstanding! You and your wife just saved a lot of people a lot of money and grief. Question, if you have a moment, did you need to disconnect the battery before doing this? In any event, thank you.~Chuck
Thank you Chuck, It was one of those situations where there is so much wrong at once, it becomes overwhelming, and your mind goes to the worst case scenarios. No need to disconnect the battery for this, often these buss lines get grounded, cut off, even shorted to each other, and it doesn't damage the ECM or other modules.
@@J_R_Shop Thank you very much for the battery info. I agree, seeing everything fire off would get one’s head spinning quickly. ~ Chuck
Credit where credit is due: Beverly saved the day. It is a shame that after all these years of circuit boards, we still have no solder pins. Should not happen. Good job! Walt
Thank you Walt, Yes, it seems we haven't made improvements in some cases, and profits out weight quality.
Well appears domestic vehicle makers have not progressed much, use to be you had to keep a extra spark box for a ford in the glove box, A ballast resistor for Chryslers, don't remember GMs ... Fusable links and starters/alternators maybe lol. Cheap part manufacturing, lowest bidder rules now. Quality is Job last... Or is it that just good enough is good enough. Get it past the warranty period then they dont care if the part fails. Anyways I bet there will be some looking for this fix.
I agree, corporate bonuses have become first and foremost over anything else. We lean into blaming the offshore manufacturers, but they only make the parts to what is specified, by the companies placing the orders.
Hello Alvin. That sure has a clear looking picture. I have a Furion camera system on my camper, and the video is nowhere near as good. Also, on the display does it show your accurate GPS location? George B
Hi George, It is clearer than I was expecting for the cost, my scratch up windshield didn't do it any favors. Lol Yes, the GPS is accurate, I know it's a dead give away on my location, but I'm not worried about that.
tractor supply or dairy supply have milk stone remover its 56%
I have purchased a number of dash cams over the years and touch screen is the only way to fly. I have not had one that has electrostatic stickers though. The footage recorded looks very good. I did hard wire one in for 24 hour recording and found it drained the battery down . Thx Alvin
Hi Doug, This is the first time I used the electrostatic stickers, they worked much better than I thought they would. This company offers a hardwire harness with a voltage monitor built in, and it will shut the camera off when the voltage drops to around 11.5v to prevent total battery drain, they didn't send one, so I didn't mention it.
Thank you for the review, I've been considering getting one of these. And I have to say, I laughed out loud when you said you'd have your wife read the instructions to you. Thank you as always, appreciate all you do ~ Chuck
Thank you Chuck! I feel a lot of us can say we should, but don't read the manuals first. Lol
Great video. But it would have been 200% more valuable if you had have shown how to unscrew the assembly from the fender!
Hey I just got a 65 Thunderbird and the wheel is stuck over on the right and having trouble sliding back over, would this help and or do you know how to fix that
The only locking mechanism is when the shift lever is out of park and the column is in the left hand position. With that said, it could be rusted in the right hand position, or someone over tightened the cam latch screw, this would act like a clamp on the locking arm, causing the column to be hard to move. If it's not rusty in the slide area, I would try backing off the cam latch screw, it could just be over tightened, the shift lever being worn at the detent will effect the smooth operation of the column slide, it put pressure on the cam latch and locking arm, but can only lock when the column is in the left hand position.
Wow, sweet... I find this on the evening of the day when I have my column laying on the floorboards of my '65 as I am about to change my bushing as well. It was missing entirely! Also found the the tab part that moves the neutral safety switch is missing as well. I want to paint my column as well. I ordered a rebuild kit from the Birds nest. God bless you buddy.
Nick's channel Vintage Thunderbird Repair has a couple of great videos on steering column rebuild, and bushing installation. If you haven't already, check him out. 👍
If I can ask...what did you pay for them...i just bought some torque thrust mags just like that american racing wheels for my 65. jhn from kansas
All in with tires mounted, taxes and shipping, they were $1980.00 CAD...I bought them from Blue Oval Classics in Ontario, Canada.
What are the 2 products it's hard to see which is which. Would you treat a frame this way on a driving vehicle
Nice! It's always disconcerting to see transmission fluid under the vehicle. Glad this was a relatively easy fix, and inexpensive too. On a humorous note - I immediately smelled trans fluid when you pulled the plug out. Strange what our minds conjure up sometimes. Thank you and take care ~ Chuck
Lol... that's funny Chuck, our minds work in mysterious ways!
I have been dealing with that rebellious Octopus of a wiring harness on my Tbird for months now. I had some fried wires that I still don't know where two of them go.... bummer. So I have them all taped up and I hope to install the dash this week, I used the time to replace most all of the vacuum lines as well. Great video and God Bless.
Hello Alvin. Quick and easy fix. Now you can park in any driveway without leaving an oil spot. George B
Lol...yes, and I'm pretty sure just one quart of transmission fluid for this van, costs more than the new socket. 💸
$20 how could you go wrong. You have to love it when you can get parts that don't break the bank and are delivered right to your door.Thx Alvin
Yes, one of the cheapest repairs a guy can do on a Mercedes! Lol
